Errors Creating A SQL2005 Express SP2 Database Under Vista
Nov 7, 2007
Hi,
I'm trying to migrate a MSDE based application into a SQL2005 Express SP2 DB Engine on Windows Vista Business but I'm facing several errors that are blocking me.
Since the installation of SQL2005 Expr. must be done in a silent mode (the end user shouldn't set anything), I'm installing it using this syntax:
The installation proceeds without problems but when my program tries to create the database, a message error appears:
CREATE DATABASE denied on database 'master' (I translated directly from italian).
What I would like is to install SQL 2005 with "Windows Authentication" access instead of "SQL Authentication".
If I install SQL2005 manually by setting a named instance (CSERV), Windows Authentication mode, activating the option "set the local account as SQL administrative account" (translated from italian and suggested with Vista) I get the following error (read from the LOG):
CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5 (access denied) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerCSERVDataCGIDBDat.mdf'
CSERVData is the folder that the application creates and where the "mdf" and "ldf" files are stored.
So in the first case it seems that SQL2005 don't recognize the local account as administrator even if the user has administrative privileges (at least for Vista), in the second case is Vista that is blocking the action.
I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.
Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:
Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?
Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?
I'm trying to install sql express sp2 2005 in my laptop but i can't, give me this error
Machine : W7J Product : Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Product Version : 9.2.3042.00 Install : Failed Log File : C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0015_W7J_SQL.log Last Action : InstallFinalize Error String : SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: {Microsoft}{SQL Native Client}{SQL Server}Login failed for user 'sa'. Refer to server error logs and setup logs for more information. For details on how to view setup logs, see "How to View Setup Log Files" in SQL Server Books Online. Error Number : 29515
I'm choosing Windows autentication mode, so i don't know it says "sa" user.
Hi. I need to move database schema (tables definiton with relations without data) form SQL Express to SQL 2005. Is there any easy way to do it? I'll be grateful for your help. Pawel
I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:
Local Database File:
User does not have permission to perform this action.
I've searched for help with this.
I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder). The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality. Everything is running locally. No VWD installation errors.
I am supposed to be documenting the SQL Express 2005 SP2 installation and connection to our application on Vista. I have installed and uninstalled the application several times in trying to create the connection and document the process. I thought I was done but now the database will not attach because it thinks the databasse is already attached. The database is not attached. I even uninstalled it again thinking something was left over.
Among the possibilities are that the database we are trying to attach is from SQL Server 2003 on a Server 2003. I tend not to think it is a server issue but have no reason to make that statement.
I tend to think it is a Vista issue because I have encountered and circumvented several. Our applications work fine on the full version of SQL. I can connect my Vista computer to the servers without issue. We have no Vista Servers other than the workstation I am trying to get SQL Express running on.
I am about out of ideas. Any suggestion will be tried at this point. Brian
I have a problem to connect to SQL2005 Express Database with VC++ as regular user, not window system administrator.(If i login as window system admin, everything's working fine.)
A. I tried to use SQL2005 Express Server authentication, the error msg is: Code= 80004005 €œunspecified error€? Cannot open database ***, login failed.
1. I am using Server authentication with username and password. 2. Gave all the permission of Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1 and Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2 to this regular window user. 3. Connection String is: Provider=SQLNCLI;Initial Catalog=***; User ID=***;Password=***;Data Source=***;Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=SSPI;
B. I tried to use Window authentication by adding User Instance, but the error is: Code= 80004005 €œunspecified error€? MS Native Client Description = Invalid connection string attribute.
Connection String is: Provider=SQLNCLI;Initial Catalog=***; Data Source=***;Persist Security Info=False;User Instance=True;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFileName=directory***.mdf;
I try to learn "How to Access Stored Procedures with ADO.NET 2.0 - VB 2005 Express: (1) Handling the Input and Output Parameters and (2) Reporting their Values in VB Forms". I found a good article "Calling Stored Procedures from ADO.NET" by John Paul Cook in http://www.dbzine.com/sql/sql-artices/cook6. I downloaded the source code into my VB 2005 Express:

Hi All, I have an issue that's stopping me restoring a database on SQL Server Express 2005 running under Windows Vista. I'm installing a system that I've used several times before on other systems and part of the installation procedure is to use the 'restore' function to install a database from a backup file. So I'm essentially restoring but to a db that doesn't yet exist in my SQL Server, this normally goes without a hitch. However on attempting this on a Vista system, I get the following error message -
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(error not found)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLiCasework.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
where iCasework is the name I've given in the restore dialogue as the DB to restore to (which as I said, doesn't exist at the moment).
Things I've tried so far: - I have a feeling this is down to a permissions problem, so I've tried the following already 1) Running Management Studio Express as Administrator - exact same error message 2) During the initial install, I set up the default admin user to use SQL Server authentication, having read threads about vaguely similar errors I used the Surface Area Config tool to add my windows login as an admin with admin rights and tried connecting to the Server with those credentials then running the restore - exact same error message
and
3) I also tried manually creating an empty db called iCasework and then restoring the external backup into that existing backup, which just gave a different error stating that the backup file didn't match the structure of the existing db. I could create the whole db structure manually but that would entirely negate the purpose of restoring from the backup and, more to the point, has never been necessary on any other system we've done this one.
Has anyone got any ideas that I could try next please?
A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233)

I want to create deployment for MS SQL 2005 Express database, that creates database, tables and inserts data. I have made a similar with VisualStudio 2003 and MSDN
I am trying to debug a classic ASP application using Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express editions. When my application tries to execute a stored procedure, I get the following error:
Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available.
Is there a way for me to trace queries that are getting executed in SQL Server Express so I can see which stored procedure is failing? I seem to remember being able to do this with SQL Server 2000. Any other ideas on how to debug SQL Server errors like these using SQL Server Express?
i have a vista basic running on my lappy,i have beeen trying to install either sql2000 or sql2005 on it for the past one month i keep getting funny errors like installshield engine has stopped working.WHile on the sql2005 the installation will exclude the database mangament studio ,etc..I had disabled the norton antivirus running to no effect.
Hi, I'm having a problem installing SQL2005 Developer on Windows Vista.
At the System Configuration check page, I'm getting the IIS Feature Requirement item telling me IIS is not installed or disabled. This is not the case.
I have read article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920201 and switched on the IIS components as specified.
I've tried installing with Firewall, virus checker etc switched off. Every time I get the same problem. This is an issue, as I specifically need Reporting Services installed.
I have an application written in VB6 that creates a ADO connection using the (native SQL2005 clien)t from the client to SQLServer 2005 on Server 2003 configured as a stand alone server. The application works great on XP and has for a number of years.
Now I am attempting to deploy in Vista and using the same code the connection speed CRAWLS. it's in the magnitude of atleast 10 times slower. It eventualy works but the selects and doing a readnext against the resulting record set is at a snails pace.
What am I missing. It's has to be some sort of configuration problem somewhere.
When a catchable error occurs in a try block, control is passed to theassociated catch block. While I am then able to examine properties ofthe error using such functions as ERROR_NUMBER() in the catch block,the error-logging scheme used in my company requires that the actualerror be raised so that it can be picked up by components in the nexttier. I appear to be unable to do that -- I can raise some other errorthat has all of the properties of the original except the error number.For example, division by zero raises error 8134. If the code thatproduces that error is enclosed in a try block, I seem to be unable toraise that error from the catch block. Of course, if I never used thetry block to begin with this wouldn't be a problem, but then wewouldn't have the advantages of this structure as it applies to othererrors, some of which we may wish to handle differently. WhileTry-Catch looks great as a way of allowing us to handle errors in acustomized way and to avoid having all errors be passed up to ourmiddle tier, it seems that we are unable to pass ANY such errorsforward, and that is a problem for us, too. Is my understanding ofthis situation correct, or is there some way around this problem, e.g.,is there any way I could have raised error 8134, in the above example?Thanks.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out. I was trying to migrate access database to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition via Studio Express. I have also used SMAA for Access to migrate it to SQL Server 2005.
HOwever, i got trouble when creating new database in the studio Express. The following below is the error messages.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express ------------------------------
Create failed for Database 'chw'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Create+Database&LinkId=20476
An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)
------------------------------
Could not obtain exclusive lock on database 'model'. Retry the operation later. CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1807)
Could anyone help me how to get around this issue? I have no clue of what the error msg trying to say? what is database 'model'?
Hi all this is my code and i find it in microsoft's site if i run it with sql server connection it works but if i try to use it with sql express it give me this error: CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5(access denied) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'c://mydatabase.mdf' it seems as a permission error but it isn't. I have to set something in sql express while in sql server it is already setted?
static void WriteDB()
{
String str;
//sql server connection
SqlConnection myConn = new SqlConnection("Server=localhost;Integrated security=SSPI;database=master");
//sql express connection SqlConnection myConn = new SqlConnection("Server=localhost;Integrated security=SSPI;database=master");
I am investigating the feasibility of a configuration with 3 databases on SQL2005
DB_A is an OLTP database and serves up transactional publication pub_txn - with updateable subscriptions
DB_B is a subscriber database which subscribes to pub_txn
DB_B is also a publisher which serves up merge publication pub_merge
DB_C is a subscriber database which pulls pub_merge
===============================
Updates on DB_A are successfully replicated to DB_B
Howvever, when DB_C pulls updates, it doesn't find the update sent to DB_B
===============================
Updates on DB_B are successfully replicated to both DB_A and DB_C
===============================
Updates on DB_C initially failed with the error
Msg 916, Level 14, State 1, Procedure trg_MSsync_upd_course_type, Line 0 The server principal "repllinkproxy" is not able to access the database "DB_C" under the current security context.
I then changed the login repllinkproxy to be a db_owner in DB_C
I now get the error
Msg 208, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_check_sync_trigger, Line 23 Invalid object name 'dbo.MSreplication_objects'.
=================================
I have three questions as a result 1) Is there anything fundamentally wrong with what I am trying to achieve?
I have SQL Server 2005 installed with Sql Server Management Studio Express and when I open up the Management Studio program and try to create a new Database Engine I am getting the below errors: Create failed for Database 'rufnek'. web searches give no end of how extended stored procedures can only be written in C++ ( or maybe vb also) .
And that extended stored procedures should be abandonded in favour of CLR framework procedures.
And how most articles explain how to convert ESPs to CLR procedures!!!!!
But I need to pass a non-discript block of binary data, extract pieces of data identified by its offset into the block, data type inferred by offset; into data to be written to the SQL database. These offsets are determinede by mapping (C UNION) to C typedef structures.
This cannot be done by managed code, therefore cannot be done by C++ CLR.
It is also ill suited for C# .
Sounds like a job for C++ extended stored procedure.
But how does one create and deploy an ESP with Visual Studio 2005? All wizards seem to insist on CLR.
I 'm getting this error on expanding the + nodes in SQL Server Management Studio Express Object Explorer:i.e. Database -> System Databases -> Any DB selected and expanding the Tables node When I click on the nodes for Tables for any of my databases, I see it saying expanding..., but then a message box errors pops up. It was working fine until after my lunch hour when I attempted to create some new tables.Failed to retrieve data for this request. Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista).
SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running. This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself.
I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name: MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works.
The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else. Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this. Thanks.
I am reading kb 934164. I am confused about (creating system administrator) domain user accounts.... IN SQL 2005 USER PROVISIONING Tools under kb934164 8e type a window account by the following format domain/user 8k Type a windows account by following format domain/user DO I simply type domain/user or do I actually Type my domain/user account What is domain user? In other words where does domain (PASSWORD) come from? where does user(PASSWORD) come from? I have being trying to find the answer for this Is there anything else I need to be prepared for in user provisioning. By the way do you need to turn off uac in vista while installing sql 2005....Thanks Is there any examples of this? I just want to get it right....
I have VB2008 express edition and SQL server 2005. When i try to create a new local datasource in my project, the datasource seems to be created just fine however an error message comes up. If i try to create the datasource by selecting it on the 'add new item' menu, an error message says
"The data provider required to connect to the local data file could not be found. The file will be added to the project but the typed Dataset associated with the project will not be created."
If I try to create the datasource by selecting 'add new datasource' from the datasources pane, i can create the connection to a new or existing database but when i click next to proceed to the page defining the dataset, an error message says
"An error occured while converting this connection: Data provided identified by guid ' 7c602b5b-accb-4acd-9dc0-ca66388c1533 ' could not be loaded"
I have two problems on creating new SQL server database in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express using SQL server 2005 Express.
The 1st problem: (It is resolved)
After installed SQL Server 2005 express and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express. When I tried to create a SQL server database in VWD the following error occurred:
"connection to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL server express 2005 to function properly. please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkId=49251"
I was stuck with this problem for few days. I did several times of install/reinstall of VWPExpress and SQL server Express, made very sure following proper de-installation sequence as specified in the release readme. But it did not resolve the problem.
Latter I found out that if I login with another Windows XP user account, I don't get the problem.
Changing the security authority of XP file systems and IIS didn't help.
And to prove that I was doing the installation correctly, I tried a new installation of the VWDExpress with SQL server 2005 express in another machine, it worked and I could create new empty SQL database.
After 2 days of frustrating changing of options, parameters, server names, messing with the registry etc.... Finally, I found a way to overcome this problem.
The solution is:
In Visual Web Developer 2005 Express, select:
Tools -> Options -> Database Tools -> Data Connections,
Change the setting: "SQL Server Instance Name (blank for default)" to "SQLEXPRESS". (where SQLEXPRESS is the default server instance name)
That solved this 1st problem.
I still don't know the exact reason for this problem. But I recalled I did installed the VWDExpress few weeks ago, I might have installed it without selecting SQL server 2005 express at that point. I guess the subsequent install/re-install did not clean up those junk in the registry.
I still have the 2nd problem:
The "Create new SQL database..." option is always grayed out when I right click on the Data connections in the "Database Explorer" tab.
I have a bypass for this difficulty for time being:
I have to do it by using the "Add connection....", put in the server name: "myserver/SQLEXPRESS" and a new database name.
I recognize that this question borders on blasphemy but I am curious as to whether there is a version of sql2005 express for the mac platform. Would like to keep a compatible local instance of 2005 on my mac notebook.
We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.
Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup
