FK On A Column To A Table Where The Column Is Not The PK But A Unique Index

Jul 23, 2005

Hello everyone, I am new to ERWIN and I need helps from the experts out
there.

We are using ERWin 4.1.2771 and have reversed engineered some MS SQL
Server 2000 databases.

The problem we are having is that we have a FK on a column to a table
where the PK of the referencing table is on another column (such as an
identity column). We have a unique index on the column in the PK table
and SQL Server allows you to build a FK reference even though the
column is not defined as the PK.

Does anyone know how to create this type of FK within Erwin?

Thank You

Can't Add Bit Column To Unique Index

Feb 6, 2007

This is for SQL 2000 (SP 2) using Enterprise Manager. I have a table with a unique index comprised of several int fields. The index needs to include an additional bit field that is part of the table. But when I go to modify the index, the bit field name doesn't appear in the Column Name list.
Can anyone shed any light on the problem?
Thanks.

Unique Constraint To A Column From Another Table

Oct 29, 2005

Is it possible to create a unique constraint to a column from anothertable? For example:tb_current:current_names--------------aaabbbtb_new:new_name--------cccNow I want to create a constraint on tb_new.new_name to be unique withrespect to tb_current.current_names. However, tb_new.new_name shouldnot be unique to itself. So I should not be able to insert 'aaa' totb_new.new_name. But I should be able to insert 'ccc' totb_new.new_name.Here's the script to reproduce this example:create table tb_current(current_names varchar(10))create table tb_new(new_name varchar(10))insert tb_current values ('aaa')insert tb_current values ('bbb')insert tb_new values ('ccc')select * from tb_currentselect * from tb_newinsert tb_new values ('aaa') -- this should NOT be allowedinsert tb_new values ('ccc') -- this should be allowed

Transact SQL :: Find Unique Rows In Column That Are Associated With Another Field In Another Column?

May 1, 2015

I am having issues trying to write a query that would provide me the unique GUID numbers associated with a distinct PID if the unique GUID's > 1.  To summarize, I need a query that just shows which PID's have more than one unique GUID. A PID could have multiple GUID's that are the same, I'm looking for the PID's that have multiple GUID's that are different/unique.

Table1

GUID PID
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID1 PID1
GUID2 PID1
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2
GUID3 PID2

The result of the query would only have PID1 because it has two unique GUID's. PID2 would not be listed has it has the same GUID3 in each row.

Result:

PID1

Passing Second Column Of Table As Index

Aug 1, 2007

We are working on C++ in eVC++ 3.0 environment (CE 3.0) with SQL CE 2.0.

We are trying with IRowsetIndex:: Seek method to access the data from the database.
We are facing problem when we try to access data from the table having composite index other than the first column.

For example:
The table ITEM contains the following columns:
1. ItemCode
2. PcNo
3. SubPcNo
4. BrandNo
5. DescText
6. ProductionKind
7. ProductionState
8. ClearingState
9. ST
10. TS

I€™ve two indexes for this table where the two indexes are
1. ItemKey1 on ITEM (ItemCode).
2. ItemKey2 on ITEM (PcNo, SubPcNo, BrandNo).

If I mention ItemKey1 as the index then the Seek method works perfectly.

But if I mention ItemKey2 as the index, then I€™m getting the error as €œDB_E_BADBINDINFO€?.

When we visted the MSDN for this problem we noted that:
1. When you use the Seek method on multiple fields, the Seek fields must be in the same order as the fields in the underlying table. If they are not, the Seek method fails.
2. When passing key values to an index rowset, the consumer performs these actions only for the number of key columns specified in the cKeyValues argument in IRowsetIndex:: Seek.

So we had the composite index such that columns of a composite index are physically aligned next to each other as in the table.
When the first column of the index is the first column of the table as in index ItemKey1 we found that the seek method works perfectly.
If we pass the index ItemKey2, we are again getting the error €œDB_E_BADBINDINFO€?.

What else have we missed out while passing the keys in IRowsetIndex:: Seek?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Sasi.

Multi-column Index Vs Single Column Indexes

Aug 14, 2007

Hi,Would like to know the performance differenece between Multi-columnIndex vs Single Column Indexes. Let's say I have a table with col1,col2, col3 along with a primary key column and non-indexed columns. In queries, I will use col1, col2, and col3 together and some timesjust one or two of these three columns. My questions is, should Icreate one index contains col1, col2, and col3, or create 3 seperatedcolumns. I.e. each column has its own index. Any performancedifference? Thanks a lot.

SQL Server 2008 :: No Option To Automatically Partition Table Based On Unique Values Of Column?

Jun 17, 2015

A common partitioning scenario is when the partition column has the same value for every record in the partition, as opposed to a range of values. Am I the only person who wonders why there isn't an option to automatically partition a table based on the unique values of the partition column? Instead of defining a partition function with constants, you ought to be able to just give it the column and be done. This would be particularly valuable for tables partitioned on a weekly or monthly date; when new data is added it could simply create a new partition if one doesn't already exist.

Identity Column On Table And Ignore Duplicate On Index

Mar 27, 2007

Hello,

I have a table with an Identity Column set up. I also have an index on the table that is set to Ignore Duplicate. Identity starts at 1 and is incremented by 1.

So first 5 rows inserted get identity

1

2

3

4

5

If I insert rows that get ignored because of the index with Ignore Duplicate, it is ignored correctly. But, the next row to get inserted will have an identity value of 7.

So, even though the insert was ignored because of the index with Ignore Duplicate, the Identity column was incremented behind the scenes.

Is there any way to avoid this?

Thanks,

John

PC SQL Server Table (with A Column Classified Unique) Synchronizes (using Merge) With 2 PPCs SQL Mobile Adding The Same Record

Aug 29, 2006

Hi, I have a doubt about the behaviour of SQL Server 2005 in the situation I'm going to describe you.
Suppose that you have a SQL Server 2005 database on your PC, and suppose that this database has a table with a column classified as "unique" (so it's impossible for this table to contain 2 records having the same value in this column).
Suppose that you publish this database and you create 2 SQL Server Mobile 2005 subscriptions on 2 Pocket PCs.
Suppose now that the first PPC (using an embedded program) creates a record with a certain value for the column (and adds it to the table), and the second PPC makes the same thing (it inserts a record with the same column value of the first PPC).
At this point, you connect the 2 PPCs to your PC (one by one, of course), to synchronize (using merge replication) the databases...

WHAT HAPPENS??? Does an error raise?
Must you give a publication setting in which you say that, if this situation occurs, PC SQL Server holds the last (or the first, as you decide) record acquired? Is it possible?

Thank you very much

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE

[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]

to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

I am trying to solve the question in the link below:

Thanks in advance,

ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY

Clustered Index On Client_ID+ORderNO+OrdersubNo, If I Create 3 Noncluster Index On Said Column Will It Imporve Performance

Dec 5, 2007

Dear All.

We had Teradata 4700 SMP. We have moved data from TD to MS_SQL SERVER 2003. records are 19.65 Millions.

table is >> Order_Dtl

Columns are:-

Client_ID varchar 10
Order_ID varchar 50
Order_Sub_ID decimal
.....
...
..
.
Pk is (ClientID+OrderId+OrderSubID)

Web Base application or PDA devices use to initiate the order from all over the country. The issue is this table is not Partioned but good HP with 30 GB RAM is installed. this is main table that receive 18,0000 hits or more. All brokers and users are using this table to see the status of their order.

The always search by OrderID, or ClientID or order_SubNo, or enter any two like (Client_ID+Order_Sub_ID) or any combination.

Query takes to much time when ever server receive more querys. some orther indexes are also created on the same table like (OrderDate, OrdCreate Date and Status)

My Question are:-

Q1. IF Person "A" query to DB on Client_ID, then what Index will use ? (If any one do Query on any two combination like Client_ID+Order_ID, So what index will be uesd.? How does MS-SQL SERVER deal with these kind of issues.?

Q2. If i create 3 more indexes on ClientID, ORderID and OrdersubID. will this improve the performance of query.if person "A" search record on orderNo so what index will be used. (Mind it their would be 3 seprate indexes for Each PK columns) and composite-Clustered index is also available.?

Q3. I want to check what indexes has been used? on what search?

Q4. How can i check what table was populated when, or last date of update (DML)?

My Limitation is i Dont Create a Partioned table. I dont have permission to do it.

In Teradata we had more than 4 tb record of CRM data with no issue. i am not new baby in db line but not expert in sql server 2003.

I am thank u to all who read or reply.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Joining On A Table With Unique Clustered Index

Mar 7, 2015

I have three sprocs and three tables. I was told to use a clustered index in the first table and a unique clustered index on the second table. I never asked about the third table and the person I need to ask is on vacation. Most of the contents of the first table will be joined with all of the contents of the second table into the third table. Do I need to have a unique clustered index on the third table too?

The clustered index in the first sproc is on a unique key that I had created using by concatenating several columns together.

CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_UNIQUE_KEY ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data (UNIQUE_KEY);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_DATE ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data (PERIOD);
CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_ODS_ID ON MRP.Margin_Optimization_Data
(GL_SEG1_COMPANY_ODS_ID, GL_SEG2_PROFIT_CTR_ODS_ID, GL_SEG3_LOB_ODS_ID, GL_SEG4_PRODUCT_DEPT_ODS_ID, GL_SEG5_ACCOUNT_ODS_ID);

The second sproc with the unique clustered index is on the unique key from the first table and a date attribute.

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX IX_UNIQUE_KEY ON MRP.[MGN_OPT_KPI_SOURCE] (UNIQUE_KEY, PERIOD);

In the third sproc, I'll have a nonclusted index on the ODS_ID attributes, but I'm unsure of how to go about the clustered index situation.

CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX IX_ODS_ID ON MRP.MGN_OPT_KPI_VALUES
(GL_SEG1_COMPANY_ODS_ID, GL_SEG2_PROFIT_CTR_ODS_ID, GL_SEG3_LOB_ODS_ID, GL_SEG4_PRODUCT_DEPT_ODS_ID, GL_SEG5_ACCOUNT_ODS_ID);

Alter Table Add Column - How Do You Add A Column After Say The Second Column

Jul 11, 2007

When you use "Alter Table add Column", it adds the column to the end of the list of fields.

How do you insert the new column to position number 2 for instance given that you may have more than 2 columns?

Create table T1 ( a varchar(20), b varchar(20), c varchar(20))

Alter table add column x varchar(20)

so that the resulting table is

T1 a varchar(20), x varchar(20), b varchar(20), c varchar(20)

Can this be done programmatically?

Unique ID, Without An ID Column

Jul 11, 2004

Hi,

How can I assign or retrieve a unique ID from a msSQL table where there isn't a unique column.

Is there a hidden 'raw id' i can retrieve from msSQL for each record?

I'm not allowed to change the current database at all, but the developers who created it managed to use it without Unique IDs.... which doesn't help me coming from a mySQL background where UID's are kind of mandatory.

Thanks
