Having Rows With Some Null Values Returned Conditionally

This should be a simple solution, but it has been a long time since I've done any query writing (mostly in Oracle) and I am stumped, so here goes:

We are in the process of converting Access database to MSSQL with web form front ends.

I have a table, all columns are nullable, and want users to be able to query from a form, which has a field for each column and defaults to a % wild card for the entered value.

I want the users to be able to put any string in any field, and have it return each row that matches that, including rows with null values in the other columns, but not the column with the entered criteria.

Here is a sample of the data:

Now, if I have this SQL run, it will return only rows that have no nulls in any columns:

Now, if I use an OR clause for each column, this mostly works, but the trouble is it will also return rows with null values for the field that has criteria entered in it:

The idea is to only select the first 4 rows in the above example.

I was playing with ISNULL in the select clause, but all it does is substitute a string for a null, and I think CASE will do the same thing.

Is there a way I can write this query so it will return rows with NULL values in any column, except the one(column) that has user entered criteria in it?

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Integration Services :: SSIS Excel Data Source Numeric Values Returned As Null

I'm using SSIS 2005 Enterprise edition,  I'm creating a package that reads an excel (xls) file using the "excel source" component, and it dumps the data into an OLEDB destination (a sql server). When I drag the excel source component and create the excel connection to my file the component automatically reads the columns and their datatypes.

The problem is that I have a column which has numeric data and the package uploads as NULL every number that starts with a zero. (note: in excel this column is formatted as "text", despite it has only numbers, because it's the only way excel maintains the left sided zeros).

So I checked the data types by right clicking the excel source component -> show advanced editor and my surprise is that this column's data type is detected as double-precision float, and it doesn't let me change it. URL... but it only works when the first row of data has a number beginning with zero on this column. How to get the data imported correctly?

Won't Select Rows With Null Field Values

I cannot in the life of me understand what goes wrong here... In a webapplication (C#.NET) I traced an inability to retrieve existing records to SQL Server, where I cannot do the same either. The problem is that in the parameterized query, some fields can be null, and thus when the corresponding fields in the database record are null also, they should be selected. But this won't happen for some reason.

I wrote a test SQL statement that gives me the same bogus:

I have this INNER JOIN that is fine to show all possible combinations. But I need to show only rows that have one or more Null values in tbIntersect.

Should I use nested LEFT JOINT? How?

 I have a sql server table column that can contain the following possible values. 1. 766/IT 2. 777/HR3.  890/EG4.  012/AS5.  Trainee6.  Contractor 7.  Others I want to write an SQL query grouped by this column, Trainee should be one group, Contractor should be another different group, Others should be another different group and then  every thing else ( 766/IT ,777/HR ,890/EG, 012/AS) should be grouped together as one group. Think of it in terms of a pie chart with those groups.

How To Conditionally Count Distinct Values?

Here is my dataset used by my report definition. The combo of barcode and order id is unique. The 'isDiscountedItem' field indicates if the customer used a coupon to purchased an item at a lower price.

I want to group my report by department id, class id and barcode. Then, I want to count all distinct order ids for which there was at leat one discounted item.

My report would produce the following output considering the above dataset:

I've been looking at a possible solution using hash tables defined in the report code but I would like to find a 'cleaner' solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Returned SQLParam.SqlValue Is {Null} But Can't Test For Null?

I run a stored procedure for which I have a return variable. The stored procedure returns the ID of a row in a table if it exists:

m_sqlCmd.ExecuteScalar();

The m_sqlCmd has been fed an SQLParameter with direction set to output.
When the stored proc returns, I want to test it. Now when there IS a row it returns the ID ok.
When the row doesn't exist, in my watch I have:

m_sqlParam.SqlValue with value {Null}

I can't seem to work out how to test this value out.
I've tried several things but none seem to work.

This line compiles ok, but the following runs into the IF statement as if the SqlValue is null??

if (m_sqlParam.SqlValue != null)....
{

// I'm here!! I thought the watch says this is null???
}

Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't work this one out!!

Conditionally Hide 2 Out Of 6 Rows In A Matrix?

I just spent about 30mins searching through the forums for this and saw several posts, but I didn't find a straight answer that seems like it would work for my report. How can I add only 2 data rows to a group (to hide them via the group's visible properties) and keep the rest of the rows outside of the group, but still in the same column (vertical area), as shown:

Conditionally Count Rows In A Table

I am building a Table Report where I need to "count" the number of cells in a column conditionally.


I have a column of data where the values will be "Orange", "Apple", "Banana", NULL
The pseudocode would be something like this:

iCountOfOranges as Integer
iCountOfApples as Integer
iCountOfBananas as Integer

IF Cell.Value = "Orange" THEN

iCountOfOranges = iCountOfOranges + 1
ELSE IF Cell.Value = "Apple" THEN

iCountOfApples = iCountOfApples + 1
ELSE IF Cell.Value = "Banana" THEN

iCountOfBananas = iCountOfBananas + 1

The 3 count values would then be displayed in 3 footer rows at the bottom of the table.

Having one invoice table (ord) and one 'person' table (actor) I would like to include the name of the person who is responsible for an invoice: SELECT Ord.OrdNo, Ord.Selbuy, AC.Nm AS 'Responsible', AC.EmpNoFROM OrdLEFT OUTER JOIN Actor AS AC ON Ord.Selbuy = AC.EmpNoWHERE ord.ordno = 23505 This works perfectly fine if Ord.Selbuy has a corresponding value in Actor:|26914 |21|Yvonne| 21| or if there is no corresponding value in Actor:|26914 |21|NULL| NULL| But what if Ord.Selbuy=0? Then I end up with 3285 rows from Actor! This happens because Actor.EmpNo=0 is allowed. Persons which have never been employed or used to be employed gets Actor.EmpNo=0.Can I create a SELECT statement which only returns data from the INVOICE row if Ord.Selbuy=0?|26914 |21|NULL| NULL| p.s. I'm not able to change table structure/behavior of update procedures, because the tables/code belong to a "bought from the shelf"-business system.

I have a table sorted by vendor, then item, then Status date with a QC Pass date and Fail date.

I need a SQL 2008 view that counts how many consecutive times a Vendor/Item has passed QC.

When it fails, the count resets to zero, then begins incrementing again.

I need to know how to generate the last column (Count).

I have tried using a ROW_Number() OVER(Partition BY, Order By...) command in the view, but I cannot seem to make it work right.

I have a conditional split in an SSIS package - one split is where if rows are returned according to a specific rule, then insert those rows into to a Recordset Destinationm which points to a variable of Object type.

How I can use this variable to email fellow users.  For example, what I would like is if ANY rows are returned to the Object variable (1 or more), then I would like to execute an email SP that we have on our server.

Null Result Returned Even Though IS NOT NULL Specified.

Hi guys,

I've got a query on a particular table returning an odd result:

SELECT DISTINCT WorkStation
FROM Invoice
WHERE WorkStation Is Not Null
ORDER BY WorkStation

This query returns the rows I'd expect plus a null row. This doesn't happen in databases at other sites, or in other tables at this site. The following query behaves as I'd expect returning only non-null AccountNumbers.

SELECT DISTINCT AccountNumber
FROM Suppliers
WHERE AccountNumber Is Not Null
ORDER BY AccountNumber

I can't reproduce these results on another site on a table of the same structure, or on another table at this site.

Any suggestions as to what might be going on?

UGH! Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch.  Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL.  The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out.  I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error.  I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values.  I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition).  I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none.  Any ideas why do I get this?

Hi,
    I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that  there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????

Anyone know how I can null-out the returned values of the PrjMgr field? I have bolded the field in question.

Can SQL Assign Zero When NULL Is Returned From A Sub-query?

I am new to
SQL Server. I am rolling summed values from table profile to two columns in table txn. When the value for one (not necessarily both...) column is null, can that value be translated to zero? Or must I write a procedure or use a cursor?

I have a flat file with the following columns

SampleID   Rep_Number   Product  Protein   Fat   Solids

In the flat file SampleID and Product are populated in the first row only, rest of the rows only have values for Rep_Number, Protein, Fat, Solids.

SampleID and Product are blank for the rest of the rows. So my task is to fill those blank rows with the first row that has the sampleID and Product and load into the table.

Using Returned Values From One SP In Another

Hi all,

I have a SP that needs to return a record set based upon the values of calling another SP. The 2nd SP uses the output parameter and works fine. However, the resulting Insert doesnt see the value. I cannot for the life of me work out why not!

My other question is how do I stop the imbedded procedures from outputing a result? When the procedure is run in analyser it produces three sets of data. The first two being the outputs for the two SPs.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Any idea why when I run a SELECT stament in Query anaylser it returns 45 rows. But when I create the exact same SQL as a view in Enterprise manager it only returns 44 rows?

No Rows Returned; Why?

The code below returns 0 rows. The statement is intended as generic statement that would return all records between a particular start and end date and on each date only between a specific start and end time. It works perfectly if the end date is greater than the start date.
Unfortunately, if the start and end dates are equal (i.e, return all records on that one date and only between the specified start and end times) then no records are returned.
BTW, it is also looking for matching datetimes in two tables and there really is matching data in the two tables for that particular date and times.
Can anybody help resolve this?

It's only the cardiac_catheter.catheter_id and cardiac_catheter.test_date which are duplicated - the first row shown below contains correct values, the second doens't. The other values returned, on both rows, are correct. Here is some sample data:

I know the query is rubbish. Has anyone got any idea how it can be improved and sorted so that we don't pull back ambiguous data?

How Do I Get Uppercase Values Returned Only.

Trying To See If SQLDatasource Returned Rows

Hello and thank you taking a moment. I have created a simple login page where the user will pass credentials. I have a sqldatasource that will query a database to see if the user exists. What I would like to do is have the user click a button after entering their credentials. When the button is clicked I would like the SqlDatasource SelectCommand to fire and if there are rows returned then redirect the user to a new page.
I know I can do this with ADO and a datareader with the HasRows property. But what I would eventually like to do is cache the data and then bind the cached data to a control(like a dataview) on the page the user is redirected to.  If anyone can tell me how to get the Select command to fire on a button click I would be eternally grateful. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I want to select data from a table with 5.000.000 rows. It's very slowly. Do you now, how I can select only a XY number of rows? I can't use TOP in select query. User see only 20-30 rows on his page, but he can use page_up, page_down. Is possible to something as lazy load?

I have a large table with approx 250000 rows in sql 2000. I need toreturn this from an asp page but the query to return this amount ofdata causes the asp to time out before the query completes.Is there any way in ado (or another way useable from asp / vb) that Ican run the query and then fetch a number of rows at a time? Compare Rows As Returned

I running a query that returns a information from many tables. I need a way to compare the row returned to the previous row. This query currently returns the requested information for everytime an item placed. I need the query to return only the most recent order information. I can do this by doing a basic loop comparing the jobmatl.item and po.order_date. If the jobmatl.item match between the current row and last row compare the dates and keep the oldest.
