Help Needed On How To Update Individual Fields When Importing Data Into Tables

Sep 12, 2001

Help -
I need to import data into an existing table. Most import rows were unique, so I had no problem using DTS and appending. However, some import rows match existing rows except for one column/field that contains updated/new data, and I have to either replace the entire row with the imported row, or replace the individual field with the new data. How do I do that when there are many rows to import? It would take forever typing in all the data using UPDATE. Thanks in advance for your help!

Importing Data From Excel To Update Existing Fields

May 12, 2004

I have an excel file that contains column A with names of components and products followed by column B which has each respective quantity on hand. I want to import that data to our website's SQL database that has a products table with a column, Pf_ID, that has only product names not component names and In_Stock which contains out-dated information that I want updated from column B of the excel file.

I think I've figured out how to use DTS and update the two fields, but I'm afraid that when everything runs new entries will be created with component information. Is it possible to specify that only rows where Pf_ID matches some row in column A that same row's column B will be used to update the data in In_Stock. I may have just made things too confusing than they need to be, but I don't have much experience with EM or Excel.

I'm also considering trying to write a macro that will match Pf_IDs in an exported excel file of the products table and take rows out of the excel file with current quantity information putting them in a new excel file to import into the website's database.

Please help, this is getting really confusing.

Manipulating Individual Fields Of A View

Nov 13, 2007

In my database I have a table for Users, with an int primary key, and a table for Connections, with a combined primary key consisting of two UserID foreign keys. (the smallest first)

At the point I am stuck I have one UserID, lets call it current_user, and a column returned by a select statement consisting of UserIDs. Some of these IDs will likely be smaller than current_user, and some will likely be larger.

What i need to do is construct a view of two columns, combining each of the UserIDs in the column I have with current_user, with the smallest UserID of each pair residing in the first column, and the largest in the second column.

The point of this is to then SELECT the connections identified by the UserID pairs.

I suspect I could accomplish this if I could set individual fields in the a view, but I seem to have missed (or forgotten) that lecture. Anybody want to clue me in?

Update Fields With Data From Other Fields In Same Row

Jun 30, 2000

Pardon me if this question is too elementary. I am trying to create a trigger that will cause certain datafields to be updated with values from other data fields in the same row when a certain column, created specifically to fire the trigger, is updated. The purpose of this is to reduce data entry by field personnel.I think I have the create trigger statement correct, but I'm a little confused on the update statement.

In a nutshell, how can I write something like:
UPDATE "TABLENAME"
SET DATAFIELD1 = DATAFIELD2
WHERE RECORDNUMBER = (THE SAME RECORD NUMBER)

I do know that I have to ensure that sp_dboption Recursive Triggers value is set to false, thanks.

Importing Selected Csv Data Into SQL Tables

Sep 6, 2007

Hi,

I hope you can help me.

I've got a csv that I need to import. It's about 74 columns wide and 2500 rows long. What I need to do is select the first 3 columns from the columns from the csv and put them into one table and then put every 7 columns (plus the 1st column as the primary key) into a different table.

I've not explained that very well, basically it's like this...

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P

1

2

3

4

Table 1 Data

cs# A1
fe B1
cl C1

Table 2

cs# A1
desc D1
date E1
pay F1
amount G1
vat H1
total I1
cReq J1

I'm not really sure were to start. I want to import the data nightly into the tables. I've tried to use the import wizard but I can't seem to select the data I want and exclude the data I don't.

Importing Related Data From 2 Tables Into Sql 2005

Dec 5, 2007

Does anyone know how I can do this?
I have 2 tables in an ODBC datasource (INV HEADER) and (INV DETAILS). The relationship on these 2 tables is (INVNUM).
I want to import these tables into SQL 2005 on a nightly basis by date. The problem is the date field is on the (INV HEADER) table and not the (INV DETAILS) table.
Basically I want to import all the (INV DETAILS) rows that have the same (INVNUM) as the (INVHEADER) but don't know how to do this.
I could use a join on the source tables but how would I direct specific columns to 2 different destinations?
Any help on this would be great and appreciated.
Thanks

Creating Table From 3 Different Individual Tables

Jan 28, 2013

In SQL Server, I need to create a table from 3 different individual tables. I am new to the SQL Scene, so i want to know the best way to go about this. Each table has different fields, so that is making it difficult (at least for me). How about creating 1 table, that is composed of 3 other tables?

I know this is bad practice, but our District Manager wants to see production for his 'team' and whoever set this up back in the beginning gave each individual employee a different table, with custom fields (Why?!?!?!?!) so now I am trying to merge those 3 into 1, but want to get some insight on the best way to do this since there are different fields in each table and the merged (or master) table needs to have all of those fields.

SSIS Lookup Transformation To Update Individual Columns

Mar 4, 2008

Hi,
I have an example situation that seems like it should have a super easy solution, but my jobs keep failing.
Here we go. . .

I have a SQL Server 2005 table as my source in a data flow task.
This table contains raw data.
We'll call it FACT_Product_Raw - which contains a field called ProductType varchar(1)
Let's say that ProductType contains values of "A" or "B" or "C" - or for that matter, some null and garbage values

I have a lookup table, LOV_Product_Types
This table contains 3 fields that will transform my raw data table
We'll call these fields ProdTypeID smallint, ProdTypeRaw varchar(1) and ProdType smallint
It contains pairs such that A = 1, B = 2, and so on.

Here's what I want to do.
I want to ADD a field to FACT_Product_Raw that contains the "looked up" value from LOV_Product_Types.
Let's say that I want to add the ProdTypeID field to my _Raw table.

I have used the _Raw table as both my source and destination
It blows up every time.
Help.
Thanks,
David

Importing Data From One Source In Two Destination Tables Linked By A Foreign Key

Nov 14, 2006

Hi,

I have a new problem when I import data from an xml source file in two destination tables. The two tables are linked by a foreign key... for example :

table MOTHER (MOTHER_ID, MOTHER_NAME)

table CHILD (CHILD_ID, MOTHER_ID, MOTHER_NAME)

After a lot of transformations data are inserted into MOTHER table and I want to insert other fields of the data flow in CHILD table. To do this, I need the MOTHER_ID field that is auto incremented in MOTHER table.

My problem is to chain the insertion in CHILD table after the insertion in MOTHER table to be sure that the relative row in MOTHER table is really inserted. I haven't find any solution to chain another transformation task after my flow destination "Insert into MOTHER table".

The only solution I have found is to create a new flow control to insert data in CHILD table, using a lookup transformation task to bind with MOTHER table... But with this solution all my flow control transforms are made two times...

Is there a solution to chain two insertions with a foreign key constraint in a data flow?

Thanks

Regards,

Arnaud Gervais.

Importing Online XML File Into SQL Server 2005 Tables – No Data Transferred

Oct 12, 2006

Does anyone have any great suggestions on how I can import an online XML file into an SQL 2005 table?

So far I tried to accomplish it with SSIS Data Flow Task where my source is XML Source (Data access mode: XML file location; XML location: URL, Use inline schema = True). This set up properly identified the columns to be imported.

I used Copy Column data flow transformation task to load data to OLE DB destination table that has same structure.

When I run the task it does execute with no errors, however the table remains empty. It looks like I am failing to read the actual data.

Do you have any suggestions? I am willing to go around this approach with stored procs/com/you name it €“ just make it work!

Importing Text Files - DTS Help Needed

I'm using SQL 2000 and DTS andtrying to import a huge fixed width text file.File is >1m rows and >200 columns and is defined by a proprietory (i.e. notbcp produced) format specification of the formName Start LengthFld1 0 20Fld2 19 5Fld3 24 53and so on.Tbe only way I've found to define the columns so that DTS can import thefile properly is to go through the wizard and click on the starts of eachcolumn. I don't want to use bcp if possible (I did enough of that onSQL7) - but surely there's a way to get DTS to read from a format file so Idon't have to click 200 times (with all the ensuing errors I could make).Any help greatly appreciated.CheersRob

Importing CSV - Extra Fields Concatenated

Mar 10, 2008

I have designed an SSIS package and in a data flow task I've defined my source and destination components and mapped all the fields. The task works fine as long as I have the same number of fields in my CSV file as what I have defined in the task.

The issue is that if my CSV contains more fields than what are declared in the mapping, then the extra fields at the end of each line are concatenated into the last column defined in my map. For instance:

CSV SQL
Product -> Product
M0 -> M0
M1 -> M1
M2 -> M2

This works fine, but if my CSV file looks like this:
Product
M0
M1
M2
M3
M4

The values in fields M3 and M4 are concatenated with M2 and all 3 are imported into field M2 in my sql table. Any ideas?

Importing Null Date Fields

Nov 27, 2006

I'm using SQL Server Express and am trying to import a CVS file. The CVS file contains a string field (named DAS) that represents a Date. This field can be null.

I've tried using the DTS Wizard to import this CVS file and convert the DAS field to a Date, which works great until it hits a record with a NULL DAS field. It then throws a convertion error.

Still using the DTS Wizard, I've changed the DataType of the DAS field in the Source file to [DT_DATE], it works fine but all the null dates are converted to 12/30/1899.

Is there a way (DTS Wizard or something else) that will allow me to import these CVS files with null Date fields and keep them as null in SQL Server table.

Thanks for any help,

Jon

Importing EBCDIC File With COMP3 Fields

Hi All,

I have a file with several columns in Comp-3.

I have downloaded the UnPack Decimal component and, as it needs byte stream (dt_bytes) as input, so I set up an appropriate Flat File Source columns.

But I get this error:

[Flat File Source [2201]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "DTCDC" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".

[Flat File Source [2201]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR. The "output column "DTCDC" (2250)" failed because error code 0xC0209084 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "DTCDC" (2250)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.

DTCDC is first of the columns packed. These are mostly date columns packed into 5 bytes - should be unpacked to normal SQL date.

I've tried different locale , as suggested in other threads, but it didn't help.

Can anybody help me with this issue how can I do it in (VB.NET script ,importing as String??).

Thanks in advance

Help Needed : Not Able To See Fields Value When Creating A Report By Calling A Stored Procedure

Mar 23, 2008

Details :
Reporting Services 2000, SQL 2000 database, Visual Studio . Net 2003

In Report Design view

In "Data" tab, I can see records for column 'sRCName' returned from the stored procedure(usp_GetRouteCodeData) after clicking '!' icon. When I moved to "Preview" tab, I am getting below error message.
"The value expression for the textbox €˜sRCName€™ refers to the field €˜sRCName€™. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."

Observation : there is no value returned from the dataset on 'Fields' panel. The SP is accessing a table called tblRCM.
If I go to the Data--> Dataset --> Query, change the "Command Type" from 'Stored Procedure' to 'Text' and entered
select * from tblRCM at Query string area, the report is running fine.

Issue: This issue only happens at my laptop, my team member can create the same report using the same stored procedure without any error. The database is sitting on a server.

In the troubleshooting process, I tried to create a simple report by calling a stored procedure(CustOrderHist) from NorthWind DB in my local SQL server, I am able to see the data/value in 'Fields' panel and sucessfully view the data in 'Preview' tab.
Looks like the issue only happen on my machine, for a report that using stored procedure to access a DB sitting on a server.

I hope to hear from anyone who have encountered the similiar issue before, or, have any clue to resolve the issue.

Thanks.

Itook a lot of time and care creating a flexible and solid wrapper and amdeep into coding. The only problem is a noticed VARCHAR fields being drawnfrom SQL Server 2000 are being truncated to 255 characters.I searched around php.net and found the following :Note to Win32 Users: Due to a limitation in the underlying API used by PHP(MS DbLib C API), the length of VARCHAR fields is limited to 255. If youneed to store more data, use a TEXT field instead.(http://www.php.net/manual/en/functi...ield-length.php)The only problem with this advice is Text fields seem to be limited to 16characters in length, and I am having similar results in terms of truncationwith other character based fields that can store more than 255 characters.I am using PHP 4.3.3 running on IIS using the php_mssql.dll extensions andthe functions referenced here http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.mssql.php.What are my options here? Insert, Update && Delete On Two Tables With Same Data Structure...

Following Points to Consider.

1. Both tables are in the same database.

2. Table1 is using for data entry & I wants the same data in the Table2.

3. If any row insert, update & delete occers on Table1, the same effect should be done on Table2.

4. I need real time data insert, update & delete on Table2.

I knew that using triggers it could be possible, I have successfully created a trigger for inserting new rows (using logical table "Inserted") in Table2 but not succeed for update & delete yet.

I want to understand how can I impletement this successfully without any ambiguity.

I have attached data structure for tables. Thanx...

Subreports: Parameter Value Dropdown Shows Sum And Count Fields But Not The Actual Data Fields.

Jan 28, 2008

I have just started using SQL Server reporting services and am stuck with creating subreports.

I have a added a sub report to the main report. When I right click on the sub report, go to properties -> Parameters, and click on the dropdown for Parameter Value, I see all Sum and Count fields but not the data fields.

For example, In the dropdownlist for the Parameter value, I see Sum(Fields!TASK_ID.Value, "AppTest"), Count(Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, "CammpTest") but not Fields!TASK_NAME.Value, Fields!TASK_ID.Value which are the fields retrieved from the dataset assigned to the subreport.

When I manually change the parameter value to Fields!TASK_ID.Value, and try to preview the report, I get Error: Subreport could not be shown. I have no idea what the underlying issue is but am guessing that it's because the field - Fields!TASK_ID.Value is not in the dropdown but am trying to link the main report and sub report with this field.

Am I missing something here? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sirisha

Combine Tables From 2 SQL Servers With Different Schemas And Update As New Data Is Entered

Mar 28, 2008

I have 2 SQL server 2000 machines, I need to take a table from each one and combine them together based on a date time stamp. The first machine has a database that records information based on an event it is given a timestamp the value of variable is stored and a few other fields are stored in Table A. The second machine Table B has test data entered in a lab scenario. This is a manufacturing facility so the Table A data is recorded by means of a third party software. Whenever a sample is taken in the plant the event for Table A is triggered and recorded in the table. The test data may be entered on that sample in Table B several hours later the lab technician records the time that the sample was taken in Table B but it is not exact to match with the timestamp in Table A. I need to combine each of these tables into a new SQL server 2005 database on a new machine. After combining the tables which I am assuming I can based on a query that looks at the timestamp on both Tables A & B and match the rows up based on the closest timestamp. I need to continuously update these tables with the new data as it comes in. I havent worked with SQL for a couple of years and have looked at several ways to complete this task but havent had much luck. I have researched linked servers, SSIS, etc Any help would be greatly appreciated.
