How To Load Data Into A Table Using A Synonym?

Jan 25, 2006

I'd like to use a data flow task to load data into a table by specifying the synonym name of the destination table, instead of the actual table name.

The OLE DB Destination is forcing me to pick an actual table or view from a drop down list. Any ideas on how to get around this?

Thank you.

Create A Synonym For A Table Object On Remote Server

Apr 16, 2015

I'm using SQL Server 2008R2. I am developing a database which requires access to data from other servers. So far I have been creating views using OPENQUERY (where there's a performance benefit) to select specifically the columns I want. Generally, for my purposes, I find these OPENQUERY based views to perform better (some times significantly so) to simple SELECT <COLUMNS> FROM <SERVER>.<DATABASE>.<SCHEMA>.<TABLE> WHERE <Where clause Statements> format views. My understanding is that this is because an OPENQUERY "pushes" the query processing to the remote server and simply returns the final result set to the local server i.e. there's no cross-server join/synchronization going on.

My question is, if I were to create a Synonym for a table object on the remote server, where does the processing happen if I query from this Synonym or create a join with this synonym to a table in my local database?Essentially, I am trying to understand if there are any "hidden gotcha's" primarily from a performance perspective, to using synonyms.

Integration Services :: Load Incremental Data Into Fact Table When Source Table Not Have Timestamp And Unique Key

Sep 24, 2015

I have a transaction table having about 40 crore rows in source. It don't have timestamp and unique key columns. It have only Bill_month and Bill_Year columns. Actually for loading this table into staging I have added a new datetime column by adding default bill_date as 01. Then

* First we delete last 3 month data from staging tables.
* Get last 3 months data from source table.
* Load that 3 months data from source to staging table.

We do this because we only get update for last three months data. Now I have to include this transaction table as Fact table in DW. What will be the best practice for loading the fact table by picking data form staging table. Also we have to look up with dimensions for Foreign Keys.

* Should I implement the same method of deleting last 3 months records and loading them again.

Data Access :: How To Load Data From CSV File In Temp Table At Run Time

May 28, 2015

how I can load the CSV file data into the sql server table. I know there are ways like bulk insert and other to load the csv file data into the table. But in my case the table doesn't exist and has to be created at the run time. With simple insert in temp table we do like select * into #temp from tablename and that creates the temp table. So. I need something like that which create the temp table and load the data into it. because the CSV file would have different number of columns and names so I can not create the table structure in advance. I have to create the table at run time.

Performing A Data Load Using A Control Table

Aug 18, 2006

Does anyone have an example of performing a source to destination data load with another SQL Select Statement controlling source statement? What I would like to do is split up a huge data move by performing a loop on the source and modifying the source select "where" clause using values from a control table. I understand how to modify the source statement by using an expression statement with variables. Now I'm trying to figure out how to loop through a control table to drive the source task.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated,

what approach should i take so that data gets loaded in a relational structure.

Load Fact Table, Very Slow With Lookup - Data Flow Transformation

Apr 9, 2008

Hello,

I have developed some packages to load data into "Fact" tables in the data warehouse.
Some packages are OK, other ones not. What is the problem?: some packages load fact tables with lots of "Lookup - Data Flow Transformation" into the "data flow task" (lookup against dimension tables) but they are very very slow, too much slow to be choosen as a solution.

Do you have any other solutions to avoid using "Lookup - Data Flow Transformation"? Any other solution (SSIS, TSQL and so on....) is welcome to speed up the Fact table loading process.

Thank in advance

Capture Data From Excel File And Load Into Staging Table - Annual Count

Jul 31, 2013

I am working on an HR project and I have one final component that I am stuck on.

I have an Excel File that is loaded into a folder every month.

I have built a package that captures the data from the excel file and loads it into a staging table (transforming a few bits of data).

I then combine it with another table in a view.

I have another package that loads that view into a Master table and I have added a Slowly Changing Dimension so that it only updates what has been changed. (it’s a table of all employees, positions, hire dates, term dates etc).

Our HR wants to have this data in a report (with charts and tables) and they wanted it to be in a familiar format. So I made a data connection with Excel loading the data into a series of pivot tables.

I have one final component that i cant seem to figure out. At the end of every year I need to capture a count of all Active Employees and all Termed employees for that year. Just a count.

So the data will look like this.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

The data is in one table labeled [EEMaster]. To test the count I have the following.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS HistoricalHC
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Active'

this returns the HistoricalHC for 2013 as 418.

SELECT COUNT([PersNo]) AS NumbOfTermEE
FROM [dbo].[EEMaster]
WHERE [ChangeStatus] = 'Current' AND [EmpStatusName] = 'Withdrawn' AND [TermYear] = '2013'

This returns the Number of Termed employees for 2013 as 42.

I have created a table to report from called [dbo.TORateFY] that I have manually entered previous years data into.

|Year|HistoricalHC|NumbTermedEmp|
|2010|447 |57 |
|2011|419 |67 |
|2012|420 |51 |

I need a script (or possibly a couple of scripts) that will add the numbers every year with the year that the data came from.

(so on Dec 31st this package will run and add |2013|418|42| to the next row, and so on.

Store Procedure To Load Data From Flat File To Staging Table Dynamically - Column Metadata

Apr 9, 2015

I am having one store procedure which use to load data from flat file to staging table dynamically.

AL¯ALABAMA ¯30¯

After the staging_temp data gets inserted into main table.my probelm is to handle such a file where number of columns are more than the actual table.

If you see the sample rows there are 4 column separated by "¯".but actual I am having only 3 columns in my main table.so how can I get only first 3 column from the satging_temp table.

Output should be like below.

Equivalent To Informix/DB2 Synonym

Apr 28, 2004

Hi all. Informix and DB2 support something called synonyms that allow you to basically create sort of an alias for a table at the database level. Think of it sort of as a shortcut or link to a table. Does SQL Server 2000 have a similar ability and if so how?

I know someone will ask why you want to do this, so heres a quick example:
If you have one legacy application that expects to write to one particualr table, but you wish to partition that table across several tables, you can break table1 up into tablea,tableb,tablec and then create a synonym called table1 that would point to only the appropriate table at the appropriate time. This way you can break a huge HUGE table up into logically discreet smaller tables and manage the creation of the appropriate synonym in some wrapper that sits in front of the legacy application...thus allowing you to retool a table that has outgrown its original design without having to crack open dreaded legacy code.

So, anyone?

Synonym Does Not Work On Functions?

Feb 25, 2008

I ran the following command to create a synonym for a function -
create synonym testfunc for myschema.myfunc

Then testfunc will be created in the dbo schema. When I call this function from my stored procedure by 'testfunc', I received an error indicating 'testfunc' is not a recognized build-in function name. If I call it by 'dbo.testfunc' then it will work.

If I create a synonym for a table, I can access the table using the synonym in my stored procedure without any problem.

Is it true that synonym works differently on tables vs. functions?

Is It Possible To Timestamp A Synonym Name To Avoid Conflicts

Mar 17, 2007

I am working with SQL Server 2005, here is what I am doing:

declare @cx as varchar(100)

set @cx = substring(db_name(), dbo.instrrev('_', db_name()) + 1, datalength(db_name()) - dbo.instrrev('_', db_name()))

exec ('CREATE SYNONYM tblsynonym FOR ' + @cx + '..TableName')

---Procedure

drop synonym tblsynonym

The application i'm working on uses stored procedures that will at some point be called by more than one user at a time. At the start of the stored procedure the synonym is created and then it is dropped when the procedure completes, the issue is this: if two users access the same stored procedure at the same time then the first procedure will create the synonym and the second will fail because the syonym already exists.

Here is what I would like to do:

declare @cx as varchar(100)

declare @timestamp as datetime

set @cx = substring(db_name(), dbo.instrrev('_', db_name()) + 1, datalength(db_name()) - dbo.instrrev('_', db_name()))

exec ('CREATE SYNONYM tblsynonym' + @timestamp + ' FOR ' + @cx + '..TableName')

---Procedure

drop synonym tblsynonym

Any ideas??????

Transact SQL :: Retrieve Currently Created Date From Master Table To Load Into Parent And Child Table

May 12, 2015

In Master tabel i have these date datas

2015-05-10

2015-05-11

2015-05-12

SO when i try to load from  Master table to parent and child table i am using using expresssion like

select B.ID,A.* FROM FLATFILE_INVENTORY AS A JOIN DMS_INVENTORY AS B ON
A.ACDealerID=B.DMSDEALERID AND A.StockNumber=B.STOCKNUMBER AND
A.InventoryDate=B.INVENTORYDATE AND A.VehicleVIN=B.VEHICLEVIN
WHERE convert(date,A.[FtpDate]) = convert(date,GETDATE())  and convert(date,B.Ftpdate) = convert(date,getdate()) ;

If i use this Expression i am getting the current system date data's only  from Master table to parent and child tables.

My Problem is If i do this in my local sserver using the above Expression if i loaded today date and if need to load yesterday date i can change my system date to yesterday date and i can run this Expression.so that yeserday date data alone will get loaded from Master to parent and  child tables.

If i run this expression to remote server  i cannot change the system date in server.

while using this Expression for current date its loads perfectly but when i try to load yesterday data it takes current date date only not the yesterday date data.

What is the Expression on which ever  date i am trying load in  the master table  same date need to loaded in Parent and child table without changing the system Date.

SQL Server 2012 :: How To Drop And Create Synonym Without Client Error

Apr 23, 2015

A heavily-selected database will be in an inconsistent state for several hours during a batch process. For that time, a database snapshot is created and accessed instead. To allow constant client read access to the database, a database that only contains synonyms exists. Those synonyms point to the main database except during the batch process, at which time they point to the database snapshot.

To switch the synonyms, each synonym is dropped and then created pointing to the database snapshot (after its creation, of course). The drop/create occurs inside a transaction. Roughly, the SQL looks like this:

SET XACT_ABORT ON;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
DROP SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc];
CREATE SYNONYM [dbo].[some_proc] FOR [snapshot_db].[dbo].[some_proc];
GRANT EXECUTE, SELECT ON [dbo].[some_proc] TO public;
COMMIT TRANSACTION;

When the batch update is completed, the process is reversed with "snapshot_db" replaced with "regular_db". The SQL snippet above is dynamic SQL. What I've pasted is the dynamic SQL that is executed as a single batch.

While this switch is happening, clients are accessing the procedures through the synonyms, potentially at a high request rate. Testing reveals that clients can get the error:

Error=-2147217900, Id=0, Meaning=IDispatch error #3092,
Source=Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers,
Description=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.some_proc'.

This error only occurs once. If the same SPID retries its request and the transaction has not completed (for testing, a delay was added), then it blocks until the transaction completes.

Any way to prevent it besides a client-side retry?

Single Table Load

Mar 15, 1999

I thought I had posted this question already, but didn't see it in
the list. I apologize if this is a repost.

I am running SQL Server 6.5 SP 4.

I am attempting to load a single table from backup, but continually get
the error about schemas not matching. Interestingly, it comes back with
a status 4, and not the status 3 indicating a mismatch on Ansi_Padding.
The statement I am using is
load table demhist from internal_tape with file=5,nounload

I have tried creating the table from scratch and using select * into...
I have tried both above with both settings of Ansi Padding. The table
I am trying to load contaings char columns which allow nulls. I have
experimented with loading 2 other tables. One of the other tables loads
and one doesn't. The one which does not load also has char columns which
allow nulls, while the one that does load does not have char columns
which allow nulls.

Is it a known problem or limitation on the table load that it cannot reload
tables that contain char columns which allow nulls?

When I define the column as float the value is accepted without an error but it is seen as 246128 rather than 24.6128. I could update the column with a divide by 1,000 but is there an easier solution?
