I am writing some stored procedures (in DB_Internal) that reads from
the tables in DB_External. I execute my stored procedures from
DB_Internal.
Everytime I want to read the tables in DB_External, I have to refer to
the table as DB_External.dbo.tableName.
Is there a better way of declaring the database DB_External up front
in the stored procedure so I don't have to pre-fix "DB_External.dbo."
in all the table names?

I am struggling to come up with a set-based solution for this problem (i.e. that doesn't involve loops/cursors) ..A table contains items (identified by an ItemCode) and the set they belong to (identified by a SetId). Here is some sample data:

What I want to do is identify the sets that have the same members, by giving them the same ID in another column called UniqueSetId.
I'm having an issue creating a report that can group & sum similar items together (I know in some ways, the requirement doesn't make sense, but it's what the client wants).
I have a table of items (i.e. products). In some cases, items can be components of another item (called "Kits"). In this scenario, we consider the kit itself, the "parent item" and the components within the kit are called "child items". In our Items table, we have a field called "Parent_Item_Id". Records for Child Items contain the Item Id of the parent. So a sample of my database would be the following:
Item's 2 & 3 are child items of "Kit A", Item 5 is a child item of "Kit B" and Item 6 is just a stand alone item.
So, in my report, the client wants to see the SUM of both the kit & its components in a single line, grouped by the parent item. So an example of the report would be the following:

Initially this started as a case of "doh, I should just be using one database here, not two", and I was simply wanting to copy database tables. In VS2K5 I tried as there is a right click menu option of copy when a table is selected but this doesn't work for me with any database object of any kind. So fast forward to the present...I now am attempting to deploy an app to a hosting service, 1&1.com. I am allowed only one database in my current package, which should be fine for now. So I had to combine the ASPNETDB along with 2 other databases. It took a bit of time, but I got everything done, I thought, and posted to the servers. While debugging I get an error saying a stored procedure can not be found. And it indeed is not.This really confuses me as I made the changes in VS2k5, shut down and restarted to make sure I didn't miss anything, then used SQL Server Man. Studio to make a .bak file to upload to my hosting service. It never occurred to me to verify the changes I made in VS2k5 were actually on the database when viewed there. Well, they aren't, and I have no idea why. That would be issue #1 I suppose.So after giving the background info here, what I am looking for help with is how to get the changes I am making in VS2k5 to also be present when viewed from SQL Server Man. Studio as the only means of posting a db to my hosting provider is by using a .bak file.Also, why is it a project template I download has a .mdf file I am not able to even see in SQL Server Man. I just started having this problem. When I log into SQL2000 enterprise manager and click on my database, the main directory tree shows up. When I click on the Database tree to display all of the different databases on the SQL server, the text 'No Items' shows up. I can not get to any databases, but I am connected to the SQL server. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?????

I am trying to insert into a database Checkbox list items, I get good values up till the checkBox List and then it gives me all O's, My fields in my database are bit columns so I need the checkbox list itmes to be converted to this format. I am using vs 2010 to write my dtsx import scripts.I use a script component as a source to create a flat file destination file.Everything have been working fine,but then my development machine crashed and we have to install everything again.Now when i use the execute package utility to test my scripts i get the following error:

I know how to generate scripts that would contain insert queries of all records in all tables. But how can I limit this to top 10 records only from each table?I can select "Data Only" when generating the script, but it generates insert queries for all data. How can get the script to have only top 10 record insert statements? These top 10 should be ordered by the primary key.
I need to refer to a second database from within the database that I login to. Can any one help me with how to abstract this reference? I would like to be able to change a parameter somewhere (i don't really care where) and have it effect any Stored Porcedure which references the second database.

I have a table [Vendor] in first database SAMPLEDB. And i have another table [Contract] in another database TESTDB. I need a foreign key in the [Contract] table (which is in TESTDB database) is reference to the other table [Vendor] which is present in the SAMPLEDB. When i try to creating them through SQL, i received the following error message :

Hi There Let me start by explaining what I am trying to achieve as there may be a better way to perform this. I have two databases and I want to refer to four tables - one in one database and three in the other in a sql select statement. When I use the query builder in VWD I can only see tables for the database that is defined in the connection string - so therefore how do I add tables from another database? After reading a few posts I realized that all I have to do is use the syntax: database.owner.table (or [database].[owner].[table]). Unfortunately this didn't work and came up with the error "Invalid Object Name". Assuming that I must have got the owner incorrect I used the Query Tool in SQL Server Express Edition and it worked perfectly! So my sql must be correct, but why will it not work inside VWD? The two databases are named assessment and aspnetdb - the assessment database contains the table reviews and the aspnetdb database contains the tables TutorDetails, EmployerDetails and StudentDetails. I've got code that on my own machine (visual studio .net 2003 and iis and sql server all exist on this box) works great. I display my test page, which loads a dropdownlist on page_load. This works great on my own machine.
When I move the code to our dev environment. Web server and database servers on separate boxes. I get the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when i try to open the connection to the database. I thought it had to do with permissions and I check all through sql server and everything looks great. I then thought it was the connection string. I still haven't ruled this out, but I wrote a quick vbscript app to attach to the database and try to pull a record. The vbscript worked fine. So, the code works fine on my computer, but not on the web server. The connection does work with vbscript, but through my asp.net web app I get the "object reference" error.

I created a CLR procedure with a service reference in Visual Studio 2010 that is being used in SQL Server 2008 R2. We recently tried to deploy it to a 2012 SQL Server, but were unable to due to compatibility issues. When I tried to upgrade the package to Visual Studio 2013 I got this error message:

I tried to create this using the 2012 Data Tools, but was unable to add a service reference with the GUI. It appears Microsoft has removed this functionality. My company has a third party app that we have limited control over, which is why we need this functionality.
In database projects, VS2015, I want to create some views for me database that will reference another database table using 3 part naming reference.
Works fine in SSMS but when I try and build me project I is throwing up a reference error.
I can't import the other database into this project, so is there a way to suppress the error? I don't really want to exclude these view from the project.

This comes up with an error basically saying that 'touchAppointments' isn't valid in the subquery. How can I get this statement to work and return the number of notes that relate to the relevant appointment?
I'm working on a document management system that will allow the users to tag docs. Would it better in terms of performance and general maintenance to have all the tags comma de-limited in a column of the doc record, or have each tag in a row of an associated table?
