Memory Allocation In MS-SQL 2000 Instances

Mar 17, 2006

Hi,
From a previous sys-admin I inherited a a MS-SQL (2000) machine with 3
instances. It is a nice machine with 4 Gb of memory but the memory allocation
is very weird:
Instance A: 1400Mb
Instance B: 1000Mb
Instance C: 80Mb (!)

Instance C is performing badly under a bit of pressure which seems not strange
considering these allocations.

With that in mind, is there a way to check and re-allocate memory? I'd like to
see if the instances really need these amounts of memory and if not, to move
some over to other instances.

Thanks!

Memory Allocation In SQL 2000

Sep 13, 2007

I would like to ask regarding the memory allocation fo SQL Server 2000. For example if my Data Server have 8GB physical memory installed how much memory can SQL Server 2000 utilize? Based on my research and understing SQL 2000 Server can only utilize 3GB memory? But using the AWE you can set the memory to a maximum server memory?

Memory Allocation

Mar 27, 2008

I have windows 2003 with ms sql 2000. The machine has 3.6 gigs of ram and only runs ms sql, nothing else.
Whenever the first query is made sql will allocate as much as 1.5 gigs of ram which is just killing the system. This system reboots nightly so this first query happens every morning.
We have tried setting the min and max memory of sql, as well as the reserver memory setting to see if it will preallocate all that memory but we've had no luck.

Is there a way to make SQL allocate all that memory ahead of time? maybe make it cache some tables or something?

I know very little about MS SQL so please be very descriptive about possible solutions or troubleshooting steps.

Thanks,

Memory Allocation - Log Shipping

Aug 20, 2015

I'm log shipping to AWS. Currently, we are shipping from a server with 64 GB RAM to one at AWS with 30. It's not a massive server but does have periods of high usage when certain jobs/tasks run. It's been running fine for a year but the server size is large and is barely used. My understanding is that for simply log shipping, we don't need a lot of memory and I was hoping to drop the instance size down and use an instance with 16 GB Ram instead. It would save thousands per year.

Allocation Of Memory By Instance

Oct 2, 2007

I’m setting up a server for development that will have one instance of SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition and one of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition installed.

The server has a total of 3.5 GB of physical memory, so I was wondering about the best way to allocate the memory. Should I just let both instances have the default allocation and let them fight it out for memory as needed, or allocate a memory limit for each instance?

Memory Allocation To SQL Server - AWE Under 32 GB

Apr 23, 2006

I am setting up a server under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (SP1) and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (SP4). The new server is a AMD opteron with 32 GB of memory. I noticed that PAE is enabled automatically by Windows 2003. Should I enable AWE for SQL Server 2000 and specify Max and Min amount of memory for SQL Server ?? Is there a limit on how much I could specify in MAX memory for SQL??

This is the first time I have a server with so much memory so I want to make sure that I do the right thing. In the past I only have servers with 8 GB of memory and we just enable AWE and specify Max memory to 6 GB or so.

Any advise is very much appreciated. Thanks,

What Is Better.. Static Or Dynamic Memory Allocation ?

Dec 26, 2007

I have gotten mixed comments on this topic. I have a 64 bit machine running 64 windows 2003 standard and 64 SQL 2005 standard with 8 GB of RAM. We want to upgrade it to 32 GB. What is the best approach to do this? Dynamic or Stattic giving min and max server memory a value ? and if static what value should I use for 32 GB knowing that this box is only being used for SQL.

Memory Usage/allocation/paging Question

Jun 30, 2006

Are there any *negative* consequences to SQL Server 2000 Standardpaging to disk more often if one reduces the amount of available RAMfrom 2.0 GB to 1.5 GB to give the OS and other apps enough RAM, otherthan things possibly being "slower" and whatever wear and tear couldhappen to the disk drives??Or is it better to add in more RAM per se to bring the server up to 4GB (Win2k3 Svr SP1)?? (it has a 4GB pagefile)Is any information available about judging how much RAM the OS (Windows2003 Server) should have available?? Does IIS require a lot of RAM??Thank you, Tom

Named Instances And Default Instances Of SQL Server 2000

Jul 18, 2001

I had a server with SQL Server 7.0
I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB
of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance.
Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance.
So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default
instance
Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can
connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)

thanks

Recovery :: OS Memory Reservation For Two Node Cluster Having Three Instances

We are running with a 2 node windows cluster having three SQL instances on it.

OS: Windows server 2008R2 SP1
SQL : SQL server 2008R2 (10.50.6529)

Currently both nodes have 256 GB or memory and we are having multiple auto failover for resources. What will be the best practice for OS memory reservation (OS+tools) so that we can set SQL max memory settings accordingly?

SQL 2012 :: Determining MAXDOP And Memory Configuration For Multiple Instances?

Sep 18, 2014

We are just finishing our migration to SQL 2012. In our old environment, the instance which held our SharePoint databases also served other applications. We did not experience any performance related issues in the past due to this.

SharePoint basically requires MAXDOP to be 1, which is correct on the old server. Since this configuration may not be ideal for other applications that may be put within our environment, we our entertaining the idea of isolating SharePoint into its own instance, probably on the same box.

My manager wants me to come up with performance trace data to better prove that we need to go this route since we apparently have had issues in the past by blindly following Microsoft's best practices.

1.MAXDOP configuration - I understand this may be a 2 pronged approach that would require looking at various execution plans and CPU related counters in Perfmon. SharePoint likely requires a maxdop of 1 due to the nature of the application (lots of concurrent processes). What is the best way to show this need graphically?

2. Memory configuration for multiple instances - Does the Total Server Memory reveal all the memory that a given SQL instance is utilizing? Should I use this counter to identify appropriate min/max memory configurations for multiple instances on a single cluster?

The problem with the perfmon approach is that it's scope is limited to just the server. Since our SharePoint environment is currently being shared with other applications, I understand that I may have to utilize DMV statistics to narrow down my analysis.

Sql Server 2000 Using Less Memory After More Memory Added

Aug 22, 2007

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

thank you

Running SQL 6.5 And SQL 2000 As 2 Instances

Feb 9, 2001

Hi all

We are planning to upgrade vom SQL 6.5 to SQL 2000 and SMS 1.2 to SMS 2.0. We want to first migrate SMS 1.2 to 2.0 with the SQL 6.5 database. Afterwards we want to install SQL 2000 as a second instance on the sql 6.5 server and migrate from there our databases. Is this the best way to do this? Does anybody have experience with running two instances of different SQL-Versions on one server? and what kind of trouble can I expect to run into?

Any tips & tricks are welcome

Sql 2000 And Sql 2005 Instances On The Same Box

Jan 16, 2008

We have an x86 sql 2000 server with 4GB of RAM, a quadcore Xeon, a RAID 5 drive C, and its utilization is generally low. Typical perfmon counters: CPU < 5%; available Mbytes, 1800; typical disk time 5-10 %; Committed bytes in use < 25%, pagessec near 0.0.

For various reasons I need to install a sql 2005 instance on the same box and both instances will be up and running at the same time.

How, using Perfmon (?), can I determine the max amount of memory to assign to each instance? (It is my understanding that I definitiely need to limit the amount of RAM used by each instance.)

TIA,

Connecting To SQL Server 2000 Named Instances

Aug 29, 2006

I have the following problem;

I fully understand that to connect to a named instance of SQL Server you need to use the ServerNameSQLInstanceName. The problem I have is that I have a SQL Server in a different zone. I can connect to the Default instance by IP Address or the ServerName.zone.domain.org. (e.g. MySQLServer.zone1.mydomain.org).

However, the same thing does not work for the Named Instance. It seems to be named instance or nothing.

How can I connect to this named instance across network zones?:S

Connecting To SQL Server 2000 Named Instances

Jan 9, 2007

We are having all kinds of issues with named instances for SQL 2000.

I am trying to connect to a SQL Server 2000 named instance on a different subnet and get an error. I cannot connect with ODBC or our web app.

I am using the port number for the alias that I created in the SQL Client Utility. We can connect to default instances without a problem, but not the named instances.

The SQL Server is 2000 build 2040 (Service pack 4 with a hot fix.) The server is listening on port 1223. In the ODBC connection I click on the Network Config and create an alias with the named instance such as SQLVSNSQLNI and specify port 1223. I have also tried adding the port to the connection string in the ASP include file (SQLVSNSQLNI,1223). If I do the same thing with a default instance on the network, both the app and ODBC work fine. It is only when I use a named instance.

Very frustrated. Thanks for any help you can provide

Upgrade From SQL 2000 To SQL 2005, Same Machine For Both Instances?

Do I need to uninstall SQL2K before installing SQL2K?

Depending on what combo of SQL I have installed my options on SQL2K install vary.

I am a bit lost at this point.

Anyone know a link to a good white paper type doc that guides me through an install on the same machine.

Dual Instances In OnSQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager

Feb 16, 2007

I am working on a site's SQL Server 2000 database on a W2k3 machine . I went into Enterprise Manager and saw that their database resides on a named instance. I did not see the default instance listed so I registered that using windows authentication. I noticed that the default instance had a user database that had the same name as the user database on the named instance that I was to work on. I looked at the properties of the databases and saw that on both the default and named instances of SQL Server that the Data Files and Log Files for the user database point to the same location.

Is this a problem? Can anyone see any issues with this? Does this mean that someone can simply connect to the named or the default instance of the SQL Server and connect to the same database?
