Merge Repliction - Run Stored Procedure When Merge Agent Starts

Jul 23, 2005

I have database on SQL Server 2000 set up with a merge publication.
This publication is configured with a number of dynamic filters to
reduce the amount of data sent to each client. Each client has an
anonymous pull subscription. The merge process can be triggered by the
windows sync manager and my application.

To improve performance I have created some helper tables to hold the
mapping between user login and primary keys of selected entities.

For the replicated data to be correct the contents of the helper tables
needs to be up to date.

I need to fire off a stored procedure on the publisher before
replication starts to verify that this data is up to date. I can not
see any documented way of doing this however I have been experimenting
with some unorthodox systems.

Firstly has anyone any ideas?

I have been considering adding a trigger to some of the tables used by
the Microsoft replication code - yes I know this is very nasty.

My problems arise because executing this stored procedure will cause
some data to be updated. In updating data we could create a new
generation in the database. I must therefore run my stored procedure
before any the Microsoft code makes any generation checks / updates.

Anyone done anything similar, Anyone have any better ideas?

Any comments would be gratefully received.

Merge Agent System Stored Procedures And Sp_Recompile

Jul 13, 2006

Hello,

We are trying to be proactive and stop a potential performance issue by reducing the number of recompiles in our SQL 2000 database application. This database is replicated. After viewing output from Profiler and PerfMon it seems that over 90% of the recompiles are due to system stored procedures generated by replication merge agents. Can anything be done about this?

Thanks

SQL Server 2014 :: Merge Replication Synchronization In Stored Procedure

Oct 24, 2014

I'm updating some tables in a subscriber database with a stored procedure. After the tables get updated I'd like to sync them with the other subscriber dbs and the publisher db in that same stored procedure.I can do it manually in SSMS with the View Synchronization method. Are my only alternatives a batch job or C#?

Cannot Set The ProfileName On A Merge Agent

Jun 28, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to create a new merge subscription using RMO on Sql 2005, but I want the new agent to use a non-default profile.

I can set the ProfileName on the agent but it seems to have no affect. I was wondering, do I have the wrong Profile name?

This is the code I'm using

subscription = new MergeSubscription();

subscription.ConnectionContext = conn;

subscription.SubscriberName = server;

subscription.SubscriberSecurity.SqlStandardLogin = sqlUserName;

subscription.SubscriberSecurity.SqlStandardPassword = sqlPassword;

subscription.SubscriberSecurity.WindowsAuthentication = useWindowsAuth;

subscription.PublicationName = publication.Name;

subscription.DatabaseName = publication.DatabaseName;

subscription.SubscriptionDBName = database;

subscription.SyncType = SubscriptionSyncType.Automatic;

subscription.SubscriberType = MergeSubscriberType.Global;

subscription.Priority = 75;

subscription.UseInteractiveResolver = false;

if(hostNameOverride != null && hostNameOverride.Length > 0)

subscription.HostName = hostNameOverride;

subscription.SynchronizationAgentProcessSecurity.Login = agentUserName;

subscription.SynchronizationAgentProcessSecurity.Password = agentPassword;

// Create the push subscription.

subscription.Create();

if (subscription.SynchronizationAgent != null)

subscription.SynchronizationAgent.ProfileName = "High Volume Server-to-Server Profile";

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong??

Merge Agent Error

Apr 27, 2006

Hi

We are using HTTPS merge replication.

One of my subscribers is getting this error:

Error messages:

The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention-based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Publisher for changes not yet sent to the Subscriber. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload). (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147199402)

This is a bit surprising - it has been working fine - and also there were no changes at the publisher (it only has one article in this publication - a stored proc)

Why would this have happened ? The retention period is 45 days and they synchronised successfully only a few days prior.

thanks

Merge Agent Login Problem

Jun 23, 2006

I have a push merge replication up and working in development SQL Server 2005 (publisher) and SQL Express (subscriber). Because the upgrade from 2000 to 2005 for our production servers has been delayed for who knows how long, I am working to set the same replication up with 2000 and MSDE.

The merge agent is failing in 2000 with the error:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 18452)

The 2005 merge agent runs fine. I think it is because the 2005 subscription wizard allowed me to set the 'Run as: SQL Agent Service Account' option, instead of a windows authentication uid. There is no opportunity to set this in the 2000 subscription wizard nor on the merge agen job step itself. I didn't take a screen dump, but am confident that I used the SECURITYMODE=SQL parameter on the MSDE client install.

Any help on whether I'm correct on what the problem is and what to change to get the 2000 merge to log in with the SQL agent service account would be great. Thanks.

Problem With Merge Replication--with Snap Shot Agent

Sep 20, 2004

i am having a problem with the merge replication.
has over 400 thousand records and is running on a hp server with a raid 5 configuration.
i am trying to create a merge replication on another server with the same configuration.

i am facing problems in 2 places.

firstly i created a push subscription and ran the snap shot agnt.
but the snap shot agent times out and expires .. as a result of which i am not able to create the initial snap shot on the subscribers end.

next i thought i would manualy create a snap shot
and so i backed up the dabase from the publisher and restores it on the subscription side.

now i tried to create a new subscription by chosing the option... the dabase alredy conists of the data base and schema
and i get a n error saying
"SQL Server Enterprise Manager encountered errors creating push subscriptions for the following Subscribers:

ICE: Error 20086: Publication '%s' does not support the nosync type because it contains a table that does not have a rowguidcol column

what do i do to solve this problem....
please try and give me a solution to solve either ways.

thanks,

SQL 2012 :: Merge Agent Hanging After A Large Request

Aug 29, 2015

Using merge replication + web synchronization, I have a situation when there are large amount of data changes to upload to the publisher, Merge agent would create a large request and send it over. The publisher gets it and is able to work on it. After few minutes it has finished but (I assume) the connection has been dropped. At the subscriber's side, it appears that the merge agent is hung. The output would look like something like this:

Upload request size is XXX bytes.
Uploaded a total of 100 chunks.
Uploaded a total of 200 chunks.
Uploaded a total of 211 chunks.

The request message was sent to [URL] ....

Normally, when the publisher finishes working, the merge agent then continues processing. But when it takes more than few minutes (it seems to break about at 2 or 3 minutes), merge agent will hang as long as the InternetTimeout setting is (currently 20 minutes) before finally failing and retrying.

But that's not right. The publisher was done and can't communicate back to the merge agent (presumably because the connection was dropped). As a result, merge agent will try to re-enumerate changes on top of giving appearance that it's hung.

I've already fiddled with settings such as MaxUploadChanges, UploadGenerationsPerBatch, UploadReadChangesPerBatch, and UploadWriteChangesPerBatch. However, none of those setting actually ensure that the request message is too large. It has worked in breaking up the changes into separate batches (e.g. processing a single table rather than all tables) which results in more frequent updates and thus avoid the problem.

However, when a single table has several changes, it is still lumped into one large request which then takes more than 2-3 minutes to process on publisher's side and thus I still end up with the same symptom of merge agent hanging.

Is there anything else I could try to get merge agent to keep its connection alive even during processing a large request?

Merge Agent Not Started - Start Synchronizing Disabled

Aug 6, 2006

i'm running a SQL Server 2000 SP42000.8.00.2039, developer.
i'm trying to setup a merge replication between the default istance and a named one of the same machine, using the same domain account for both publisher and subscriber.
when it comes to "start synchronizing" (right click on the subscriber merge agent), i found it disabled, just like it is running, but it is not (the icon shows a stop sign, even refreshing.)
The state is "disactivated". When i stop sync and start it again things don't change.
If i setup a "pull" subscription, i get a sequence of a message like "interface not supported" (a translation from italian "Interfaccia non supportata"): after 10 attempts, it stops.
i cannot find this error searching in internet, could you address me?
thanks in advance!

I'm trying to setup merge replication and get the following error from the snapshot agent after I've finished the 'New Publication Wizard'. Problem Downloading The Snapshot Agent In A Merge Pull Subscription.

Jun 21, 2007

Hello.

I've been having an error when downloading the snapshot agent from our Publisher.

The articles selected are all the tables and all the stored procedures.

The Subscription is created programmatically and so is the synchronization. When trying to synchronize for the first time and when the subscriber tries to download the snapshot I have the following error:

Error messages:
The schema script 'Distrito_2.sch' could not be propagated to the subscriber. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201001)

The snapshot folder is at c:GESZifSnapshotFolder and the unc is \AfroditeSnapshot.

I'm getting a little desperate with this because we really need to propagate the schema changes around the subscribers.

Changing Merge Agent Profile For HTTPS - MergeSubscriberType = Anonymous

Aug 8, 2006

Hi

We are using HTTPS merge replication

Our setup is as follows:

subscription.CreateSyncAgentByDefault = False -- I wrote a windows service to synchronise
subscription.UseWebSynchronization = True
subscription.InternetSecurityMode = AuthenticationMethod.BasicAuthentication
subscription.SubscriberType = MergeSubscriberType.Anonymous

Some of our subscribers have low-quality internet connections - how do I get the agent at the publisher/distributer use a slower profile - I've read How to: Work with Replication Agent Profiles (Replication Transact-SQL Programming)
but can't see where you specifiy an alternate agent profile

On the distributer / publisher (same machine) I go to replication monitor -> Warnings and Agents - I can only set the profile for the snapshot agent....

Change A Merge Subscriber To Become A Merge Publisher

Aug 16, 2004

Hi,

I'm using merge replication to maintain a backup copy of my main (publisher)MSDE database. A push subscription periodically (1 per minute) updates the backup DB.
It's intended that if the main db goes down then the backup (subscription) db can be configured as a publisher. This must all be performed via scripting.
The initial configuration of the main publisher and subscription is controlled via scripting, which works fine.
The problems occur when I try to configure the subsciber to become a publisher. A script is executed on the subscriber but fails at the point when it's configuring the publisher detail. The error is something like "unable to configure a publication for a database setup as an anonymous subscription".
I'm guessing that there are subscritpion artifacts added to the database which need to be removed before it can be configured as a new publisher.

Please help,
Jez W

Replication :: Merge Agent Not Applying Transactions In Bulk On First Initialization Of A Subscriber

May 12, 2015

We have a filtered publisher (SQL Server 2012) with several pull and push subscriptions that have been functioning fine for years.

We have just added a new pull subscriber from a remote server.  We configured an alternate folder location on the subscriber (pointing to existing path on a remote server).  We generated new snapshot and partitioned snapshot, and moved to subscribing server at alternate path.We're seeing a problem we've never seen before:

When the merge agent runs, it applies the schema and performs a few hundred bulk inserts, but then proceeds to 'download changes to subscriber' as though the snapshot is old (it is brand new and should have all transactions).  We have never seen this before, i.e. all data is usually applied in bulk when creating a new or reinitializing an existing subscriber.

we marked the subscriber for re-initialization (from both the publishing and subscribing server) with a fresh set of snapshots.  The same problem occurred.We have also tried in our test environment (which mirrors production) and the snapshot applies as expected (via bulk inserts).

(It might be relevant to note the publisher was recently upgraded in-place from 2005 to 2012.)

Weird Results Post Merge Agent Run (Automatic Identity Range Management)

Run SQL Job Each Time Agent Starts

Aug 22, 2007

In SQL 2000 you can schedule a job to run each time the agent starts. I don't see that option now in 2005.

Does anyone know what happened to that or how to achieve that. I could do a stored proc with the proc option I guess but why did they remove that functionality or maybe I am not seeing it.

Thanks

Merge Replication And Stored Procedures

Sep 19, 2007

Hi,

I created a .sdf file thru merge replication.

On the step of publication, in the articles object there is an option to select from 1) Tables,views 2) and stored procedures from the databse.

How these two are diferent from each other?
My aim is to use Stored procedures extensively so that I can avoid SQL code in device.

When we use this .sdf file in active sync,we only getting the tables, and no sp's and views.

Is it possible to accept sp's and view from sdf in pocketPC?

I am using SQL server2005 on server , Windows SQL Mobile 2005 in pocket pc 2003 using Compact Framework 2.0
Please advice..

Setting Up Publication For Merge Replication Using Stored Procedures

Aug 2, 2006

Hello.I am trying to use Transact SQL to prepare publication for replication (SQL Server 2000 SP4 and SQL Mobile). I can easily create publication, add filters etc. but there is one thing which I can't find : parameter which tells me subscriber type and allow me to change subscriber type for publication. I don't know where I can change (or even if I can change) this property.
If someone made publication for mobile devices and replication with filters,resolvers etc. will it be a problem to share experiences here? Maybe some sample code with script or something what will guide me. Thanks in advance. Maciej Wysocki

HOW To Pull Merge Subscriptions In SQL Server 2000 Using Stored Procedures ??? (URGENT)

Dec 15, 2005

I've successfully carried out pull subscription using Wizard in SQL server 2000.

But NOW its the time to deploy the project & I've to do it programatically........

i tried to use the default stored procedures like "sp_addmergepullsubscription ", "sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent  ", "sp_reinitmergepullsubscription ", with respective parameters.

Then using replmerge.exe i tried to execute the batch file But could not succeed......

Can anyone guide me from the Basics ??? (i knw the Replication Architecture its heirarchy....but have NO idea of performing it Programatically......!!!!!!!!)

by BASICS, i mean......how should i execute the resp. stored procedures with what parametes & the order i should follow in order to successfully pull a merge subscription in SQL server 2000.

if a Sample code is mentioned as example, would be better for me to understand....

Thanking all of you in anticipation...........

Soft Delete In Table, Why Merge Agent Report Hards Delete On Table ?

Feb 1, 2007

Hi seniors

there are two tables involve in replication let say table1 and replicated table is also rep.table1.

we are not deleting records physically in table1 so only a bit in table1 has true when u want to delete a record but the strange thing is that replication agaent report that this is hard delete operation on table1 so download and report hard delete operation and delete the record in replicated table which is very crucial.

plz let me know where am i wrong and how i put it into right way.

there is no triggers on published tables and noother trigger is created on published table.

Stored Procedure And SQL Job Agent Task

Feb 5, 2007

I have a stored procedure thats transferring/processing data from onetable to two different tables. The destination tables have a uniquevalue constraint as the source tables at times has duplicate recordsand this will prevent the duplicates from being reported. When thestored procedure (which includes a cursor) is executed through queryanalyzer, it runs fine, and reports an error everytime it sees aduplicate value (as expected). It moves all the unique values from thesource to the destination tables.However, if the same stored procedure is run as a task/job in SQLServer Agent, the behaviour is different. The job fails when it see'sthe error and ends up skipping records or terminating the procedureall together. Eg. if there are 100 records in the source table with 10duplicates, the stored procedure when run through Query Analyzer willcopy the 90 unique records to the destination tables but when run fromSQL-Agent, it copies just 10-15 records.Any idea why this happens?

Stored Procedure Works, Agent Job Aborts

Oct 8, 2006

One of my clients has a stored procedure on their secondary server thatcopies a bunch of data from the production server. (Replication willbreak the accounting software, according to its authors. The productionserver generates a nightly full backup, so if the secondary can bescripted to do a nightly restore from that same file, then that wouldprobably be a Big Win.)Anyway, if I execute the stored procedure from Query Analyzer, itfinishes (after nearly 24 hours) - tested once recently, and I'm sureat least a few times at some point in the past. If I run a SQL ServerAgent job that executes the stored procedure, then it gets cut off afterabout 15-20 minutes - tested once recently with a manual run, and forseveral weeks of scheduled runs before that. (This being a secondaryserver, it took a while for the problem to be noticed.) What are thelikely causes of this?Both servers are running SQL 2K with SP3, and limited to TCP/IP andnamed pipes. RPC is allowed, with a 600-second timeout, but thatdoesn't seem relevant, since both the successful and unsuccessfulmethods go well past that length. The production server is a recentpurchase, and works well for their daily operations; the secondaryserver and/or its network connection might be flaky for all I know,but that doesn't seem relevant either, since success appears todepend consistently on method of execution.

Data Truncated When Stored Procedure Run From Sql Server Agent

Apr 18, 2008

I have a stored procedure which loops thru about 180 tables and inserts the data into one table used for reporting purposes. One field is a ntext field. If I execute the stored procedure from query analyzer the entire contents of the ntext field is available. When I run as scheduled task (every 1/2 hour) from sql server agent, the data in the ntext field is truncated.
