Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

Feb 17, 2004

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine

Feb 28, 2003

I have a few questions about the SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), sorry there are so many ..

1. Which software products does this come with ?
2. If I create a SQL Server Database and want to distribute it to clients, how do I actually do it with MDSE ?
3. If I need to "upgrade" my database at some point in the future (that may contain data at a client site) how would I go about getting all the data out - would I need to write an external app ?
4. What are it's pros and cons when compared to installing full SQL Server on a client site ?
5. I've heard that the preformance of an MSDE Database degrades severely after more than 5 concurrent connections, is this just due to the performance of the product or is it something to do with the licencing model ?
6. Is it possible to write applications in, say VB, to alter the database once it has been installed on client site e.g. modify/create tables, indexes, stored procedures ?

Thanks for any help in advance ..

Scott..

MSDE 2000 Release A Won't Talk

Jul 20, 2005

MSDE 2000 Release A installed under windows 2000 pro will notcommunicate with SQL Server Manager nor MS Access on peer computer. Can someone help?Have set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 at install time.Install log shows installation successful..Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services section shows SQL server instancerunning.Disabling firewall has no effect.SQL Server Manager (icon at bottom right in task tray - thisstarts/stops Server instances), on same computer as SQL Serverinstance, shows only instance "H" which is the same as the computername. (This instance was uninstalled before new instance wasinstalled.) Typing new instance name ("HABC" and variations) intotop combo box produces error messages such as "wrong format for name","Network path not found" "RPC service not running". What is thecorrect computer/name format?? Key problem is clearly that ServiceManager can't communicate with this local MSDE instance. All Windows 2000 updates from MS web site have been installed. Objective is to operate MS Access on computer X (also running Win 2000Pro) with computer H as a peer that hosts MSDE.Has anyone else run MSDE 2000 Release A on a Windows 2000 Pro system??---Mark Ferguson

SQL Native Client And MSDE 2000 Release A(OLE DB)

Apr 12, 2007

Hi~.

Now, SQL Server 2005 Express and client application using SQL Native Client is running in my system.

When connect, I use following statement.

hr = CoCreateInstance(CLSID_SQLNCLI, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_IDBInitialize, (void**)&m_pIDBInitialize);

Question is, if I need to connect to MSDE 2000(Release A) database, can I use SQL Native Client in client application?

After some tests, it seem to be ok in local configuration. But, has problems to connect to remote database server.

I am trying to install Windows XPe dev kit and this is the step I am getting stuck on. If I try to skip this step and setup the database the setup obviously tells me that i dont have sql 200 or MSDE installed.

The KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811479 describes the syptoms perfectly, but fast user switching isnt even enabled for this machine and is not the source of the problem.

Microsoft##EESS And MSDE SQL 2000 On Windows 2003 Small Business Server

Currently a server running 2003 small business operating system has MSDE 2000 and Microsoft##SSEE.

A memory problem exists with SQL consuming over 50% of RAM. Total RAM is 4GB.

There is a SQL 2000 patch for this type of problem. However, it calls for SQL to be upgraded to SP4.

Problem:
Can this MSDE 2000 be upgraded with SP4 and have memory patch applied with Microsoft##SSEE also on this box?

A Question Regarding MSDE Desktop Engine

Feb 19, 2005

Dear all,

This week I was told to setup MSDE Desktop Engine on my pc bcz my Access back end db is getting bigger in size. And as a little advance step, I decided to put my Access back end on SQL server.

To be frank, I have no experience with SQL server but after reading the instructions, I have installed MSDE (latest version) on my pc successfully. A small icon of SQL server appeared nearby clock icon of my pc showing the SQL server is running on ASHFAQUEPC.

I shifted a Trial db onto this server in following way.

Considering the opened Trial db would be my BE, from the Tools---Database Utility---Upsize wizard, I followed below steps according to Upsize wizard.

1.I selected ‘Local’ server and check marked to ’Use Trusted Connection’.
2.And then I selected some tables to export
3.Kept all default attributes of db as it is
4.Selected ‘Let the wizard decide’ under data option to include.
5.At the next step ‘What application change do you want to make?
a.Create a new Access client/Server application.
b.Link SQL Server tables to existing application.
c.No application changes. (I selected this option)

Then it showed me the report of my db description of changes that were made after deploying it. The report I did not print bcz it was a trial db with one table (2 fields) and a simple query.

My idea was to connect my Trial BE with another one of another Access mdb file so FE would be Access and BE would be from MSDE.

1.Now I don’t know how to link my BE to my FE?
2.From where I can directly see my BE? Because SQL Server Service Manager does
not have any menu?
3.Where I was wrong in following steps?

Guidance in this regards is highly appreciated.

With kind regards,
Ashfaque

How Compatible Is MSDE 2000 With SQL Server 2000?

May 20, 2005

Will any application developed against SQL Server 2000 Developer
Edition work on an identical platform with only MSDE 2000 installed? I
understand there's a concurrency limit with MSDE 2000 of around 25 (and there's no GUI) but apart
from that, are there any aspects of SQL Server 2000 functionality (from the .NET applicaiton code's point of view) that
are "disabled" in MSDE 2000?

My Questions are :-

1. Can remote locations, update data locally and send changes (say in every one hour) to central server. If yes, then how ??

2. Same way they can receive updates from Central Server on whatever was updated on Centra Server or on the 3 remote locations. If yes, then How ??

However, if someone knows how to differentiate between them in the Registry it would be greatly appreciated.

MSDE 2000 Vs MS SQL 2000 Server

Dec 18, 2003

I am about to setup an application server. This app will generate reports and instead of just having a HTML page up, I am considering running dotnetnuke type portal to offer the userbase a better interface for the reports, info, announcement, etc.

Server isn't too bad (2x1.7Ghz Xeon I think, 2GIG RAM) type of setup (may be little more or less). App doesn't require as much resources, but we are planning for the future )

While I have some resource to play with, I also need to make sure I don't load much that may impact the application performance. In my experience, SQL Server 2000 will take a lot of resources even when not used as much. So I am considering MSDE.

I am curious however, WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SQL 2000 Server Vs MSDE 2000 ?

Beside no Client tool and mostly command line specific command, what else there to convince that I should go for server vs desktop engine?

Now our company has Enterprise license for SQL, so I am not worried about the cost (well a little maybe), but mostly wondering about performance.

If you think of any reason why I go to SQL Server 2000 over MSDE, please let me. Otherwise, I think MSDE in this case is the appropriate RDBMS to go for.

Regards,

Impu

Transferring Databases From MSDE 2000 To SQL 2000

Jan 28, 2007

Trying to transfer databases from MSDE to SQL. When I use SQLEnterprise Manager - DTS - import or export, it works for the firstdatabase, but then fails for the others. I select the to and fromdatabases using DTS - Import - 'MS OLE DB Provider for SQL Server',then select 'Copy objects and data between SQL Servers'. It failswith the generic error message: 'Copy objects failed', nothingfurther. I tried to just copy data, and it doesn't work totally. Ontwo databases, it said that it copied everything, but when I go inunder Enterprise manager, some of the tables are incomplete, i.e. nodata, table shows up in the list, but if you try to look at it, itsays that it is missing or empty. Also, one table was not evencopied. In the other two cases, I get errors, does not copy alltables. I get errors, like insert fails, but the column it referencesfor the table does not even exist in that table. Any suggestionswould be appreciated.

However, I just wanted to understand that is it aviable solution given the database size is something around 200 GB?Equipping with more memory, more storage and a more powerful CPU on adesktop PC could really taking up the role to support the DBMS?Besides this "sensitive" costing concerns, what will be othersdifference in running the SQL Server 2000 on the two differenthardware architecture?
