Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

Feb 17, 2004

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Should I Uninstall MSDE And Install Developer Edition?

Aug 18, 2004

I know people have put up this question before but I wanted some updated feedback.
I just bought Visual Studio Tools for MS Office and it comes with SQL Developer Edition. I am currently using VS.net 2003 and using MSDE with MS SQL Web Data Administrator to build my dbs then export the sql script.
I was wondering if I should uninstall the MSDE and install the DEv Ed so I can develop all the triggers, constraints etc through Enterprise Manager, therefore having a better setup DB. I know you can do all that through code but why reinvent the wheel.
One last question, with the Dev Ed you just export the schema and scripts to a machine with SQL Server installed once the DB is ready for deployment ? Is this correct?
I lied one more question, does the uninstall of MSDE leave much of a mess, what is the best way to get rid of it.
Thanks in advance
Pete

Can I Install SQLServer2000 Developer Edition To My PC If I Already Have MSDE Installed?

Feb 13, 2006

In  the past I've used MSDE with Visual Studio.NET 2003.  I'm going to start studying for an MCP in SQL Server 2000 so I'll probably get SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.  Will I be able to install this on my PC if it already has MSDE installed, or will I need to remove MSDE, etc?  If there are any other things I need to be aware of please let me know.
Also should I stick with SQL Server 2000 while studying for the exam, or would I probably be able to use SQL Server 2005 with a book that uses SQL Server 2000? I don't know how different they are.

MSDE 2000 Release A Won't Talk

Jul 20, 2005

MSDE 2000 Release A installed under windows 2000 pro will notcommunicate with SQL Server Manager nor MS Access on peer computer. Can someone help?Have set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 at install time.Install log shows installation successful..Control Panel> Admin Tools> Services section shows SQL server instancerunning.Disabling firewall has no effect.SQL Server Manager (icon at bottom right in task tray - thisstarts/stops Server instances), on same computer as SQL Serverinstance, shows only instance "H" which is the same as the computername. (This instance was uninstalled before new instance wasinstalled.) Typing new instance name ("HABC" and variations) intotop combo box produces error messages such as "wrong format for name","Network path not found" "RPC service not running". What is thecorrect computer/name format?? Key problem is clearly that ServiceManager can't communicate with this local MSDE instance. All Windows 2000 updates from MS web site have been installed. Objective is to operate MS Access on computer X (also running Win 2000Pro) with computer H as a peer that hosts MSDE.Has anyone else run MSDE 2000 Release A on a Windows 2000 Pro system??---Mark Ferguson

SQL Native Client And MSDE 2000 Release A(OLE DB)

Apr 12, 2007

Hi~.

Now, SQL Server 2005 Express and client application using SQL Native Client is running in my system.

When connect, I use following statement.

hr = CoCreateInstance(CLSID_SQLNCLI, NULL, CLSCTX_INPROC_SERVER, IID_IDBInitialize, (void**)&m_pIDBInitialize);

Question is, if I need to connect to MSDE 2000(Release A) database, can I use SQL Native Client in client application?

After some tests, it seem to be ok in local configuration. But, has problems to connect to remote database server.

SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition

May 5, 2004

I am currently using MS Access for my site and am ready to move on.

I have obtained (legally) SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.

Before I install this on my pc to learn this new tool and begin adjustments to my site, I have an important question, If I can phrase it correctly.

1. Will this set up my pc as a SQL server as well as keep the current configurations?
2. I have some projects I would like to keep using MS Access, how would this effect it?
3. I have never created a database using SQL or MySQL, any suggested tutorial links?

Connect From 2005 Developer Edition To 2000 Developer Edition

Jun 1, 2007

Hi, all -

I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.

i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.

I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).

I haven't needed to do this before.

Suggestions?

Developer Edition Licensing SQL Server 2000/2005

Nov 26, 2007

Hello,

I have two question with respect to the developer edition licensing in SQL Server 2000 and 2005:

Question 1
I wanted to install a developer edition on a Development/Test Server. The server needs to be accessed by our development and Testing team of a team of 20 from their workstations. Is that possible?

Question 2
And if so what are the different licensing options that I can choose from considering that I don't want to install a developer edition of sql server on each workstation? The developer edition will be installed on the Dev/Test Server and the workstations will connect to the server using NT or Standard authentication.

Looking forward for any advice and suggestions.

Thanks!

SQL Server 2000 Dev Edition - Install Issues On Win XP SP1

Sep 6, 2006

Hi All,

I am facing a familiar issue, with a slight variance in the situation. I have already spent hours googling for a solution, so along with the problem I'll highlight what I have already tried to remedy it.

Problem
--------
I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 Dev. Edition on my Win XP SP1 platform. I did a default instance installation. I am able to start up the server and keep it up.

Issue
-----
On opening the Enterprise Manager I get the error, "SQLDMO.DLL not registered, re-run SQL Server setup etc."

Next I navigated to <install dir>Microsoft SQL Server80ToolsBinn and executed regsvr32 sqldmo.dll and I get the following error, "LoadLibrary("sqldmo.dll") failed - Invalid Access to Memory Location"

Comments
----------
I have verified that all the relevant dlls are present in the above and <...>system32 folders. I have also created an alias for the server using the client network utility.

There was a time when I had installed SQL Server 2000 previously and I did manage to get it to work, even the sqldmo.dll registeration bit. But uninstalled it subsequently as I was having space issues.

Since then I have installed various XP hotfixes and security fixes, except for Win XP SP2

Any thoughts, anyone?????

Does Visual Web Developer Express Edition Works With Ms 2000 Database Service?

My problem is that after paying for webhosting fees my web host told me that they do not support SQL Server express edition. Instead they have support for MySQL and Ms Access. Except that there is this MS 2000 Database service for an additional cost. Any recommendations what I should do except changing the host? If I pay for MS 2000 Database servicem, will my website work? My user management(i.e ASPNETDB database) was created by Visual Web developer and I don't want to do user management myself. Any advice?
