Raw-level Locking

I used sp_indexoption to allow row locks and disallow page locks on all indexes of a heavily contented table (lots of concurrent selects/inserts/updates). The first error I saw was "The SQL Server cannot obtain a LOCK resource at this time. Rerun your statement when there are fewer active users or ask the system administrator to check the SQL Server lock and memory configuration.". I restarted the sql server and everything is ok (the server is not very powerful and will be beefed up).
My question is that with the above settings, will the select statements acquire row-level shared locks as well? Since our select queries are fairly complicated, my main concern is that we may frequently run of of resource even with a more powerful machine. Is my concern valid or I got everything wrong?

Is there anything for delete or update row level locking?
We keep geting deadlock problem with our application with multi-users. First we ran into the deadlock on INSERT. By setting 'insert row level locking' help us to go a little bit further but later we run into deadlock with DELETE. For my knowlege, DELETE and UPDATE requires exclusive page lock. Might be I am out of date.

I am writing a VB program, which needs to update record A in one table using transaction control (BeginTrans & CommitTrans). But due to the page-level locking, before the "CommitTrans", other users couldn't not read other records in the same table.
Is there any way that I can do the record/row level locking? If possible, could you provide me some VB source code? Such as how to use "DBCC ROWLOCK" or how to set for row-level locking.

SQL Server 6.5 on-line help states that IRL is only effective if the table has a unique clustered index defined on the table. IF this true and if so does anyone know why.

We have one table.We have updated the status for one column to 1 and we did not committed the transaction. Can we do an another update on another row.
In below example i am updating GEO_D and transaction is not committed. Now my requirement is we have to update other records (not Geo_D). If try to update GEo_D it should wait.

I'm running SQL Server 7.0. I have a DB running with 6.5 compatibility mode.
Do INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE queries use row level locking in this DB ?
(I know if I set the db compatibility mode to 7.0 row level locking will be enabled)

Hi all
We are writing a web-based multi-user call centre application application.
we are getting concurrency problems as you would expect with a multiuser application.
the application is made for callers who will bring up a different contact to call based on some predefined priority. now because the algorithm that prioritises the contacts takes a good 2 seconds to run, if 2 different caller request for the next prioritised contact, they will retrieve the same contact.
The only way that we think can resolve this problem is by building a queue. The queue would be implemented as a table, the particular implementation of this queue would be, when ever someone retrieves an entry from the queue, a background process will go on and generate a new queued item, i.e. in a FIFO manner. So that's how we think we should implement the queue.
Now come the question how to implement it. My idea is to have row level locking and a trigger to remove queue items from the queue. so that once one caller have looked at one of the item in the queue, another user can't look at the same item.
Any suggestions as to how i might be able to avoid concurrency problems?
What do you all think of my idea of implementing the FIFO queue?/
Is it possible to do row level locking in such a way that other users won't even be able to read the locked entry??

I am running one maintenance plan which includes just "Chech DB Integrity" and "Reorganised Index". But it failed and I am getting following error:-

I have a question on locking pattern of read committed with snapshot isolation level that when two transaction update two different records then why do they block to each other even if they have previous committed value (old version of record).
I executed the below batch from a query window in SSMS
--Session 1:
use adventureworks
create table marbles (id int primary key, color char(5))
insert marbles values(1, 'Black')
insert marbles values(2, 'White')
alter database adventureworks set read_committed_snapshot on
set transaction isolation level read committed
begin tran
update marbles set color = 'Black' where color = 'White'
--commit tran
Before committing the first transaction I executed below query from second query window in SSMS
--Session 2:
use adventureworks
set transaction isolation level read committed
begin tran
update marbles set color = 'White' where color = 'Black'
commit tran
Here the first session blocks to second session. These same transactions execute simultaneuosly in snapshot isolation level. So my question is why this blocking is required in read committed with snapshot isolation level?

When you utilize transactions in ADO.NET are the locks put on the entire TABLE used or at the row level?
For instance if you do a SELECT within a transaction if you only pull 5 rows out of a 1000 row table can you just make it lock the rows that have been pulled? It seems like it locks the entire table?

Problem setting is a geography dimension with multiple user defined hierarchies in SSAS 2008.
Ex.:
Hierarchy 1 (political territory): level 6 --> level 5 --> level 4 --> level 3 (state) --> level 2 --> level 1
Hierarchy 2 (sales territory): level 4 --> level 3 --> level 2 (sales region) --> level 1
...
Hierarchy 9
The relationship between state and sales region is n:1, i.e. one state belongs to exactly one sales region, and one sales region can consists of one or multiple states. Unfortunatly I can't define this attribute relationsship in the dimension because it would lead to a diamond-shaped relationsship without a user-defined-hierarchy to back it up. So far that isn't much of a problem, user don't drill down from sales region to state. But now I want to define a calculated member that multiplies a measure from the main measure group with another measure from a weighting factor measure group at the state level and above. The granularity attribute of the geography dimension in the dimension usage tab of the weighting factor measuregroup is the state.
So far what I've got is:

This works from a functional point of view, but is rather slow when querying any other hierarchy than the political territory hierarchy, because SSAS first goes down from the state level to the key attribute of the geography dimension, and then aggregates from there to the sales region.In other words, I want SSAS to resolve the relationsship (which state belongs to which sales region) through the dimension, and not through the fact, and apply the calculation afterwards. Like some kind of currency conversion, but only from a certain level upwards.

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration. So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do? It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost". So that is the first problem. So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box). How ever when I try to get someone to try to login I am taken to a page that has an server error. The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom. I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer. On my computer I have MSSQL express. So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder). So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database. Is this the correct methodology? Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server? The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient. I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files. So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also? So that I don't have to use MSSQL? My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense. It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

Hi everyone,
I have a question about SQL Server 2005. I have written an ASP.Net 2.0 Web Application and it is using SQL Server 2005 as Database.
In the last few days I noticed that the app is down sometimes. To analyze the problem I looked at the activity monitor in SQL Management Studio. I can see there approximately 170 processinfos.
I want to describe the column values of the process infos:
Process-ID: Unique ID and a red down-showing-arrow-icon
User: My UserDatabase: My DatabaseStatus: sleepingCommand: AWAITING COMMANDApplication: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
When I click Locks by Object, I can see the IDs of the Processinfos. Again I will show some colums:Type: DATABASERequirementtype: LOCKRequirementstate: GRANTOwnertype: SHARED_TRANSACTION_WORKSPACEDatabase: My Database
So my question is, does this mean, that i have locked the db? How are they handled? For example I have a windows service, which is doing checks in db every 10 seconds. I can see, that each check generates a new processinfo?
Is this usual, or am I doing something wrong?

When I run a select statement : select 'X' from table1 where c1 = condition locking on indexes behaves as expected
However if I run select 1 from table1 where c1 = condition locking on indexes goes wild locking pages and rows on indexes that are not even referenced in the query. Any ideas Why?

i have an application in production(sql 6.5 ) which causes locking which times out my other processes , iwant to capture time the locking takes place i have found in bol that i can get time deadlock occurs using trace flag 3605 in sql7.0 ,if i have to use trace flag is it ok with dbcc traceon or -T option in startup is recommended.
any advice would be appreciated

I have used DTS in the past to copy information in certain tables in production over the top of those same tables in test. However, the process is now failing. Does DTS require an exclusive lock on the source table, as well as the destination table during the export process? Will shared locks on the table I need to copy prevent DTS from completing the process?

We are running out of locks while updating a particular table (table name = history, rows = 25,000,000) in SQL Server 6.5.
LE threshold maximum is set to 200.
LE threshold minimum is set to 20.
LE threshold percentage is set to 0.
Locks is set to 0.
I have also included the stored procedure, which we use to update the history table.
As you can see, from the first four lines, we ran this SP 4 times processing around 6 million rows at a time. It runs out of locks once it is around 5.5 to 6.5 million rows. Is there a way of locking the table so that this SP can be run just once which will effectively process all the 26 million rows in one go?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I'm trying to use the pessimistic row locking of SQL to get following result.
When a customer form is openend, the row should be locked for writing.
This lock should be left open until the user closes the customer form.
I cannot use transactions because there can be more then 1 customer form open in the same app. In ADO a connection is IN transaction or is NOT, nested transactions are not supported.
How can I keep this row locked on SQL and this until I unlock it or the connection is broken ( in case of problems on client machine )?
And how can I see on another machine of this row ( customer ) is already locked so I can open him in read-only?
For the moment I'm using extra fields that hold the info wether the customer is locked en by whom. But that's on application level, not on DB-level.
I hope this is clear enough.

Ok, this may be a brain dead question but I can't seem to figure out what it is I am doing wrong. I have a stored proc which has multiple inserts and updates and deletes. However, I do not want to commit until the end of the procedure. So near the end if no error has been return by a particular insert, update, delete I tell it to COMMIT TRAN. My problem is that it seems to run and run and run and run. I take out the Begin Tran and boom it runs fast and completes.
But if there is a problem near the end then those other statements will be committed. I wish to avoid that. I have an error routine at the end of the SP and I have if statement to GOTO sp_error: if @@error produces a non zero value. I am sure I am doing something goofy but can seem to see it. I know it has come down to the Begin Tran. Is it that I have too many uncommitted transactions? Or perhaps I am locking something up. I know its hard to tell without seeing what I am doing but is there something simple to remember about using explicit transactions that I am forgetting. Any help is appreciated.
