Replicating To An Archive Database.
Nov 27, 2005
I want to replicate to an archive database. This means that the subscriber will have data that has been removed from the publisher. In my reading, I haven't seen any discussion of this specific scenario.
Here's what I imagine the solution might be:
EXEC sp_addpublication_snapshot
@publication = N'My_Publication',
@frequency_type = 1 -- only create the snapshot once
GO
...
EXEC sp_addarticle
@publication = N'My_Publication',
@article = N'My_Table',
@source_owner = N'dbo',
@source_object = N'My_Table',
@del_cmd = 'NONE',
GO
I set the publication snapshot to only execute once, that would be during the maintenance window when it is initially installed. Then, on the tables that will contain archived data, I specify that deletes aren't replicated.
Here's my concern: aren't there times when you need to resync?
If you could push a new snapshot that dropped the tables on the subscriber and built the thing up from scratch, then things would sync-up just fine. But in this scenario if you drop the subscriber tables then you've just lost your archive.
What's the best way to handle this?
Thanks,

Hi Everybody,
I'm working on a new database of 25GB in size with an expected 25% growth per year and an estimated 1000 TPS. Since I need to retain the old data for atleast 7 years. I would like to know whether I should Archive the database or is there any other means of storing the data, which will be used just to generate reports. Also pl. do let me know the advantages/disadvantages.
Thanks

Hi
For strange reasons, I am now unable to backup (archive) any of the databases in Analysis Service. :eek:
When I try to archive, I get a dialog box with the following error:
"[MicroSoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified"
I am able to process my cubes and dimensions and am totally lost as to why I'm getting this problem :S
Will appreciate your help.
Thanks.

I have the requirement to implement archiving of some database old data.
The database is not used to store files, just table with text/numeric data, some data modification logs.
Which strategies do you usually use to archive old records from a database?
Do you move old/unused data to another similar database in another server?
The data needs to be accessible for read access, even when archived.

Replicating partial database
Hi there, actually I have a set of tables from my database model on SQL SERVER 2005 that I want to replicate (using merge replication) to a different server with SQL SERVER 2005 EXPRESS, Everything seems to be ok until I try so replicate just a portion of my model. I€™ve got some parent tables to replicate but I€™m not going to replicate some of their children, when I try to move them (just the parents and SOME children) to the other server using subscription, I have to erase some foreign keys (the children€™s foreign keys I wasn€™t supposed to migrate) in the target server to get my database migrated.
What Can I do to solve this problem?

hi there,
After replicating a database, the stored procedures in that same database are not able to edit by other users than service account (sys admin users), When the normal users try to edit any of the stored procedures, sql server 2005 is throwing the following error...
Msg 21050, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_MSmerge_ddldispatcher, Line 12Only members of the sysadmin fixed server role or db_owner fixed database role can perform this operation. Contact an administrator with sufficient permissions to perform this operation.
any suggessions are most welcome.

Hi,
I need to implement SQL Reporting Services but do not wish to use the production database for running the reports against. I intend to set a seperate server for reporting services. The data only needs to be refreshed on a daily basis, during slient hours. What would be the best way to copy data from the production to the reporting services server?
Thanks

Discovered that a geo-spatial AlwaysOn HA database (1 of 4) was not synchronizing as at a point in time earlier in the day. Â Suspend Data Movement appears to be working perpetually without finishing. Â The SQL Server services is in a Pending Changes state after an attempt to restart it from SQL Configuration Manager. Â The Cluster Dashboard says it is in a Not Synchronizing state, with only the one database in question having a yellow triangle, all 3 others show green. Â
The warning for the cluster is:At least one availability database on this availability replica has an unhealthy data synchronization state. If this is an asynchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. If this is a synchronous-commit availability replica, all availability databases should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state. Â There is no abnormal data movement from the primary to the seconday.The warnings for the unhealthy database are:
The data synchronization state of this availability database is unhealthy. On an asynchronous-commit availability replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZING state. On a synchronous-commit replica, every availability database should be in the SYNCHRONIZED state.Either a database administrator or the system has suspended data synchronization on this availability database.So how to get this database back to synchronizing state?

Client is running X- version of application and corresponding database size is huge. Now client's vendor is releasing Y-version of same application with many database schema changes (like new tables added, new columns added, renamed existing columns and etc) To upgrade to the Y-version, vendor is suggesting to my client that down the system and do the upgrade for application/database to Y-version. We are sure that this process will take days together to upgrade to the Y-version. My client is not ready to down the system for that long. So we are trying to find the solution with minimal down time.The approach we are thinking is,Â
1) Create the replicated database to another server (server2) from production server(server1) using golden gate with X-version
2) Create new tables/schema updated tables from Y-version database on same server1. Here for  Updated schema tables we are planning to use the name <table_name_Y_version> as the same table name exists in X-version.
3)With above 2 steps, golden gate replicate the changes from production to server1 and server1 will have the new Y-version table schema (with different concatenate name ' _Y_version'). BTW , there is no affect for the production
4) At this stage we are planning to find best approach, to fill the '<table_name>_Y_version' from X-version tables. two challenges here a) all data needs to be moved to Y-version tables b) they have to sync data in real time.
we thought of going to
a) ssis package to pump the data to Y-version tables, but real time data will not sync.
b) trigger based technique, previous experience said, lot of load
c) thinking about sql replication.

I am trying to replicated table A into table B withing the same server and the same database.
I am getting an error message when trying to configure the subscription: You have selected the Publisher as a Subscriber and entered a subscription database that is the same as the publishing database. Select another subscription database.
Is there any workaround for this?
I am using SQL Server 2008 R2.

I am wondering if it is possible to archive records out of a SQL Server Database. The records would then be removed from the original database. This process should be able to be run multiple times (with user interface).

Project assigned to me called ''Archive off old data''.As SQL DBA the best way to archive large table is data Partitioning. But one table does not enough in terms of size to do partition and plus table has 32 other tables,view,sps dependencies.The data from that table needs to archive off every week to different database on different server. My question are
1) what is the best way to archive data ?
2) what are steps I need to follow ? Do I need to remove dependencies first and then take out data?.

A client of mine just asked about Archiving and Purging their data (based on different time constraints). For isntance, certain data would get archived after 3 years over to a different database, others purged all together. My thoughts off the bat are store procedures run on a job schedule.
Any other thoughts or ideas?

My SP looks like this that originally populates the record set.
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.sp_insert_file
@KBID int,@rev int,@filename nvarchar(50),@moddate datetime,@owner nvarchar(50),@author nvarchar(50)
As
INSERT INTO KBFile (KBID, rev, filename, moddate, owner, author)VALUES (@KBID,@rev,@filename,@moddate,@owner, @author)GO
I need to have a stored procedure that will select a recordset based on KBID(PK) and archive the entire record set to another table. I then need to be able to UPDATE the individual records for this record set in the KBFile table.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hi Folks,
We have transactional replication setup to replicate data from production across to a reporting server.
We want to ARCHIVE production, but don't want the ARCHIVE duplicated on the reporting server.
Does anyone know of a way that the reporting server can be stopped from replicating these changes, and continue to hold the FULL history of the database?
Cheers,
David

I have a table called customers that store information about the particular customer. I would like to have a table called Archive so that when I delete a Customer that have not been active for a specific time then the deleted information will be automatically be inserted into the Archive table. Do I need to create the archive table with the same numbers of columns as exactly as the customer table?
I need some basic idea about how this should be implemented.
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hello:
The purchased-application mssql 6.5, sp 4 that I am working on has one large table has 13m illion. It the largest table considering thenextlatgest table is only1.75 million rows.
Thew vnedor has made a change to this largest table in recommending changing a data type -- char to varchar. To make this change easier to do,
I want to "archive" older data not necessary for the current year or current processing to another table.
What is the best way to do this archiving?
Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
