Reporting Services :: Cannot Modify Folder Permissions

May 21, 2014

We have a SQL 2012 SSRS instance. We need to modify the permissions on one of the reporting folders. I went to the Security setting of the folder, clicked "New role assignment", then entered a group name into the box and selected desired permission ("Browser" in this case).

However this always fails with the same error: "The user or group name 'BUILTINBUILTIN' is not recognized. (rsUnknownUserName)"

I always get the same error no matter if I enter user or group, domain or local. And it always says BUILTINBUILTIN. I've tried changing the SSRS service account to a domain account (it was a local one), but that didn't work.

Changing The Temporary Folder Being Used By Reporting Services

Dec 19, 2007

Hi everyone!

I have a problem regarding the generation of report using SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services). As I've read from other forums, the said service need access to the Windows temp folder, which by default, is found in C:WINDOWSTemp. The said path is found in either the TMP or the TEMP environment variable. This means that there should be sufficient access to this folder, in order for SSRS to properly generate the report. The problem is that my client, for security reasons, does not want to grant special rights to this folder, using the ASP.NET account. Is there any way that we can change location of the temporary folder being used by SSRS without having to change the value of the TMP and TEMP environment variables? thanks in advance

Example
Report "Inventory Value" in folder Accounting has the Item Number field set to navigate to the report "Item Details"stored in folder Linked Reports
Paths
//ReportServer/Accounting/Inventory_Value
//ReportServer/Linked_Reports/Item_Details

Is there a way to do this?

I know I'm supposed to see a Users Folder in the Report Manager root, I'm setup as a system administrator (under Site Settings) and also have content manager rights in the root directory and I still don't see the "Users Folders" ...the only way I can see that is if they give me admin rights in the server SSRS is installed. What am I missing here, is this supposed to be like that?

Reporting Services :: Modify Report To Return Events In Progress Over Arrival Date Parameter?

Aug 6, 2015

I have a report which queries events occurring during the reporting time frame the user selects.

A user selects arrivalDateStart as 8/1/2015 and arrivalDateEnd as 12/31/2015 and the results are returned.

The issue is that there is an event that began 7/31/2015 and ends 8/2/2015. This does not appear on the report. The user does not want to have to pick an earlier arrival date as the parameter of his report to pick up anything that was already in progress prior to the beginning of the month.

I am trying to figure out how to add an expression that will also return events that are in progress over the arrival date chosen for the report.

Reporting Services :: Data Source Account And Folder Access

Apr 28, 2015

I have a question about ssrs security. In report manager I have set a list of users as browsers, and the builtin administrators are content manager in the parent folder where reports are. A user that is not an administrator and neither a user I added, has access to reports.

I'm thinking this person is having access because the data source of the reports use a administrator account to connect to the analysis services  using the option Credentials stored securely in the report server with the 2 checkboxes marked (use as windows credentials when connecting to the data source and impersonate the authenticated user).

I simply marked this option because SSRS is in 1 server and SSAS in other and I think kerberos need to be configured and I haven't looked into it, but I think the report access is separated from the data source.

Reporting Services 2005 - Giving Access To All AD-users For A Specific Folder

Jan 21, 2008

I am in a project where we are using a vanillla Reporting Services 2005 with the builtin report portal. No sharepoint integration yet.

We have successful deployments where we limit access to different folders based on AD-accounts and groups. In this particular case I have a folder for which I would like to allow access to all AD-users within the entire company.

So basically I know how to limit access but I don't know how to enable access for everyone. Is there a simple way to do it? I have googled and search mshelp but I couldn't find anything. I will admit to the search being quite quick but as usual time is short.

Permissions To Reporting Services

Dec 4, 2006

I have been looking at forums trying to resolve my problem and now my brain hurts. I really need help with this and no one seems to have a definitive answer.

When launch Reporting Services, the page is blank and the settings options are missing. Even though I am logged on to the server with a local admin account.

I have tried taking off annonymous access but when I do this I just get the page can not be displayed.

Also when connecting to ReportingServices through the Management Studio I get the following message:

The permissions granted to user 'servernameusername' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) (Report Services SOAP Proxy Source)

The permissions granted to user 'Servernameusername' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) (Report Services SOAP Proxy Source)

Any help on this would be much appreciated. I really need to get this sorted out.

Thanks.

Permissions Issue With Reporting Services

Mar 13, 2008

Hi,

We have a reporting server which was working fine. All of a sudden me ( admin) and the users who have content manager permissions donot see the properties tab on the web interface and I donot find the permissions tab. I also get "you are not authorized to access this page" error on systemsecurity page.

If I disable the allow anonymous access option from the directory security in IIS, me and the person with content manager permissions see the properties/permissions tab but users are getting 401 unauthorized error while accessing the reports ( some of them are configured as content managers).

Not sure what happend and what to do .... any help would be greatly appreciated.

.NET Permissions Error In Reporting Services When Not Using A Custom Assembly (Smiley Faces Are Not Under My Control)

May 22, 2007

.NET Permissions Error in Reporting Services when not using a custom assembly:
I need help resolving a permissions error I€™m taking in a SQL RS 2005 report.
I have a report that that is includes the following code fragment in Report Properties -> Code:
Function rtf2text(ByVal rtf As String) As String
Dim rtfcontrol As New System.Windows.Forms.RichTextBox
Try
rtfcontrol.Rtf = rtf
Return rtfcontrol.Text
Catch ex as Exception
Return ex.Message
End Try
End Function
I reference the .NET System.Windows.Forms DLL under Report Properties -> References -> References, Assembly Name (heading):
System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089
I have a text box with the following expression:
=code.rtf2text(First(Fields!EndingQuoteComment.Value, "QuoteHeader"))
And I€™ve verified, by removing the code.rtf2text command that is populated with the following:
{
tf1ansiansicpg1252deff0deflang1033{fonttbl{f0fromanfprq2fcharset0 Times New Roman;}{f1fnilfcharset0 Arial;}} viewkind4uc1pardif0fs32 ** Ending Quote Comments **par 0i0f1fs17par }
When I run the preview in Visual Studio is correctly strips the RTF and displays just €œ** Ending Quote Comments **€?. When I €˜RUN€™ locally or deploy to a SQL RS 2005 Server and run the report I take the following error:
Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.UIPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
I€™ve tried everything that I can think of on the server to make this work.
I finally put together a Win 2003 box with SQL 2005, IIS, and RS 2005 running on it in a virtual machine to be 100% sure I had a standard clean install and deployed the report and I€™m getting the same error.
Below I€™ve included a basic standalone RDL file that demonstrates my issue. I get the error referenced above when I deploy the RDL below. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated?

How Would You Modify These Permissions In SQL 2005 For Minimal Exposure

Jan 20, 2008

I have finally gotten a setup to work, but I suspect there are improvements I should make to the permissions. Here's the setup:
I am accessing two databases, (aspnetdb and my own database called custom) on a local SQL 2005 server.
In SQL Server Management Studio (SMS) I created logins at the level of the SQL instance for two users ( "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" and "viewer"). Then I select each user, and set the properties to access the Server Roles section. There I found each was given the public server role. Now here's where I set the permission to sysadmin. This setting allows my application to work, but I'm sure there are less permissive approaches I should take. However, I just can't seem to find a simple and direct explanation of the procedure to set more appropriate permissions. The "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" accesses aspnetdb in order to create users and membership settings. The "viewer" login accesses the database called custom, and it reads and alters this database. The application (which is name viewer) performs these operations using a connection string like this:
Data Source=STORE;Initial Catalog=custom;Persist Security Info=True; User ID=viewer; password=xxxxx;
What is the recommended way to set the minimal permissions for these logins on these databases?

SQL Server Setup Failed To Modify Security Permissions

Feb 19, 2007

Last night at home on my 64 bit Vista machine, I encountered the same error 29506 that said that the management studio express could not be installed.  I looked up the error message and below is what I received.  I also installed the 64 bit .net framework which installed just fine before trying to install the SSSME.

I followed the instructions below but this did not seem to make a difference.  However, I did not reboot after applying new permissions.  I have installed this software a few times now on 32 bit machines for both XP and RC1 Vista, and have not had a problem.  Last night, I did use the 64 bit version.  Also, there is no data file yet because after the install it rolls back, so I gave myself Full permissions on the SQL server directory which should include all sub directories, right?  Thanks, Teri
Error 29506.
SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file Drive:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.xMSSQLData for user SYSTEM. To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that exists on the destination drive.

Note A SQL Server service pack refers to SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later service packs.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because one or more data files exist that do not have the required permissions. By default, the Full Control permission of the Administrators group is granted to the data file when you create a database. If the permission of this group is removed from the data file, the SQL Server 2005 service pack setup will fail.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, grant the Full Control permission to the Administrators group on all data files and on the Data folder. To grant the Full Control permission to the data files, follow these steps:

1.
Locate the folder that contains the data files. By default, these files are located in the following folder:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData

2.
Right-click the data file that has no required permissions for the Administrators group, and then click Properties.

3.
If the Administrators group is not in the Group or user names list, click Add, type Administrators, and then click OK.

4.
Click Administrators in the Group or user names list, and then click to select the Allow check box for the Full Control item in the Permissions for Administrators list.Note If the files in the Data folder have an orphan owner, you have to take ownership of the files and then grant the Full Control permission to the files. We recommend that you do not change the default permissions for the data files.

Agent And Permissions To Write To Folder?

Apr 27, 2015

I see that a recent related message was posted about built-in accounts.

Anyway, a vendor set up system using SQL 2014. The SQL Server Agent service was running under the 'Local System Account'.

Agent jobs were failing because they couldn't write to a shared folder on the same server. I decided to change the account to a regular privileged domain user. Here is the error message:

Executed as user MYDOMAINSQL2014Agent Cannot open backup device 'EackupMyBackup' Operating system error 5(Access is denied). [SQLSTATE 42000] [Error 3201] BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally [SQLSTATE 42000] [Error 3013]. The step failed

I granted Full Control to that domain user and it still failed. I added 'Everyone' and gave it Full Control and it succeeded.

I understand that the account under which the Agent is running should have Write permissions on the share. However, I must have missed something. The only way I can get this to work is to grant Write or Full Control to Everyone. I absolutely do not want to do that.

Error 29506. SQL Server Setup Failed To Modify Security Permissions

Aug 15, 2007

Received the following error while installing SP2

MSI (s) (D8!A0) [21:07:09:062]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -- Error 29506. SQL Server Setup failed to modify security permissions on file C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData for user Administrator. To proceed, verify that the account and domain running SQL Server Setup exist, that the account running SQL Server Setup has administrator privileges, and that exists on the destination drive.

Tried running install with a domain account and local account with same results.

Based on the error message, I checked permission on the drive and still received the same error.

Followed resolution based on KB 916766, this did not resolve the error.

Only possible resolution I found was to disable UAP, reboot and retry the install. This will be done as a last resort, but any other suggestion will be appreciated.

Many Thanks

Setting Correct SQL Express Folder Permissions

Feb 13, 2008

Hi

I have a vm machine running SQL Express. So as to centralise my data, on the host machine I have a folder with all my data. This folder is shared. In the vm machine I have set up mapped to this folder, so it is visible within in. I can add/remove from the folder in explorer so the permissions look okay up to there.

However, when I go into SQL Express and attempt to restore from a backup into a DB, I cannot see the folder in the folder list presented. When I try and force the connection through the mapped drive letter or unc name, the server fails with a you do not have permissions.

From my reading it looks like I have got a network service account set up but, when I look at the logins in SQL Express there doesn't appear to be such an account.

Could someone either
a) point me in the right direction if the netowrk service account is not the way to go
b) tell me how to set up a netowrk service account with the correct privileges to enable me to read /write this mapped folder.

Thanks

Simon

Migrate From 32bit 2000 Reporting Services To 2005 64bit Reporting Services

Mar 22, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)

It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?

Any help is appreciated
