SQL Server 2005 Reporting - Books / Reference Guides, Etc, Need Advice!!!

Apr 18, 2008

I am not new to the SQL Server world, but am somewhat new to the SQL Server 2005 world. I am just getting into the reporting tool. By just messing around for about an hour or so, I was able to get what I wanted somewhat. Basically, I'd like to get up to speed on the reporting side of things fairly quickly. So I am looking at some books, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any.

Here is a few that caught my eye:

-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Brian Larson
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services for Dummies
-Professional SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Paul Turley
-The Rational Guide to SQL Server Reporting Services

I am thinking the 1st two would probably be my best bet, but wanted to get you folks suggestions.

Let me know as soon as you can as I am planning on going to the book store tonight or this weekend.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Tony

SQL Server 2000 Reference Books

Nov 6, 2006

There are between 10 and 15 books in the set.  I recall an index, developer's book, administrator's book, and two T-SQL reference books.  I don't remember what the other books were.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  I had these books at my disposal at my last place of employment and I'm trying to get the same books here.  If this sounds familiar to anyone, can you point me in the right direction?
 Thanks

Best SQL Server 2005 Books

Aug 17, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:

Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization

Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?

Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.

Thanks.

MSSQL Server 2000 Reporting Services - URL Reference To Images

Nov 16, 2004

Hi,
I'm trying to insert the Url for the image control in the Report designer. As per your article there should be an option (radio button) in Image Wizard to use set the URL for the reports. But i do not get that option at all. All i get is these options
a) - Embedded
b) - Project
c) - Database
I do not get a URL option.
My problem is that i have a URL path to the images that are stored on a Web Server. I would like to this path to be the source of the Image control. I can't make it work. Any help will be appreciated.

Need Advice On Installation Of Server 2005

May 23, 2008

The box that was provided for me to install sql server 2005 (64 bit) standard is setup like this:

c: raid 1 (OS is server 2003 x 64)
d: raid 5 (4 disk)
and 1 extra drive.
What is the best install solution for this configuration

Would it be best to put Sql Server 2005 on the extra drive and the mdf and ldf on the raid 5. Im not to sure.

Box is made, and I know ideally would be to place the ldf and mdf on there own Raid 10. This is for a ecommerce site.'

Books, Courses And Training About Reporting Service For Dummies

May 29, 2007

Hi,

We have currently done one data ware house project with MS SQL server, reporting server, analysis server and integration server and the users are very happy with it (especially the speed).

The reports have been developed by a developer. I have years of experience in Visual studio, SQL, reports so I could do it very quickly. The users want to make their own reports so they need training. If I look at the requirements for most books and courses they are pretty hard. You must have some experience in SQL server. Or books are focussed on RS2000. Or the books could elapse the whole spectrum of SQL, ETL, cubes and reports or they go in to securing reports.

I think that is not the information that the users want to know. It should start with what is a cube, what are dimensions and what are facts. Then explain something in how do I get the information in excel. And then make reports in the visual studio environment (not the builder on the report server, but the report designer that comes with the client tools in visual studio). Keep in mind that they are not developers nor database administrators.

Any suggestions,

Constantijn Enders

Advice On SQL Server 2005 Vs. Express Edition W/ Advanced Services

Apr 24, 2006

I've been using SQL Server 2005 Std. for my development work on a laptop w/ 2 GHz Celeron and 768 Mb RAM. Now that Express Edition has Reporting Services and Full-Text Search, would I be wise to just use it instead? I actually have both on my machine since Express Edition installed with VS 2005 Standard. Also, if I uninstall SQL Server 2005 Std. what will I lose? Thanks in advance.

Guides On Setting Up Schema For A Database Wanted

Jan 16, 2008

In my SQL Server 2005, we stored multiple application tables in a single database. All of them is using the dbo schema in the past.

Now, we would like to change this practice and adopt a better one. However, we got some problems in the configuration.

If I want to create such a database, should I first create multiple logins and multiple users for all the application. The mulitple logins are used in the connectionstring of my web. While each login can only have 1 user in a database, I need to create a user for each login as well. (Am I correct in doing so? It seems a bit messy.)

The other problem is what should the database role of all that users? If I don't grant them the db_owner. They can't create the required tables. If I grant it, it voliate the intension of separating different application...

Please help. I am a bit lost on this now. Thanks!

Books For SQL 2000/2005

Dec 7, 2006

Well, after having a crash course on backups, tlogs and some other good stuff, I pretty much made the decision that I need to get some good books to further help me progress in my database admin path.

Right now, we are running SQL 2000 SP4, but we are planning on upgrading to 2005. With that, and the fact I am pretty new to databases, what books are recommended?

I want to get a book that will help me:

-better administration
-write SQL query code as well as understand it (what is difference between SQL programming and SQL query (such as on the sqlteam bookstore)

I feel that my career path is going to start heading down a Database path, so anything that you recommend with that is great as well.

I can't thank everyone enough for the help and input here. Everyone has been great!

Cheers

Advice On Developing A Mobile App That Uses SQL 2005 CE

Mar 9, 2007

Hi,

I am new to SQL 2005 CE but fairly experienced with SQL 2000 and know my way around SQL 2005. I am creating a PDA app that must support the following scenario:

My company has a SQL 2000 server with a "computer assets" database. This asset database must be able to be transferred to an .sdf file (SQL 2005 mobile) on the PDA when the user docks their PDA to the desktop PC (not the same machine as the SQL 2000 server). This transfer can be via an option in the mobile app that is initiated by the user, or automatic.

The mobile application basically supports stock-taking of the assets, so users go out on site and record information about the assets. This information is stored in a separate .sdf database on the PDA.

When the user gets back to the office they dock with their desktop and then must transfer the data from the second .sdf database onto the SQL 200 server. Lets call this the "asset metadata".

thats basically it! but im having issues finding the right process to attack the data transfer tasks.

My issues:

- Firstly, how do i populate the .sdf on the PDA for development purposes? Microsoft tutorials seem to be geared at SQL server 2005 management
studio only. I only have SQL server 2005 Management Studio Express on
my development machine as well as all the necessary SQL 2005 CE SDKs and VS2005. We
do not use SQL Server 2005 at my organisation as yet and it will be some time before we migrate across. In effect im looking for something that behaves like a DTS package to transfer data across.

- How to populate the "asset database" .sdf file from the SQL 2000 server when the user has docked to their desktop PC? (This needs to be refreshed )

- How to transfer the "asset metadata" from the .sdf on the PDA to the SQL server?

ive looked at merge replication a little but am not sure whether this is what i need and again most online information seem to be tailored to SQL Server 2005.

Can anyone kindly point me in the right direction?
