SQL Unable To Start After Login Account Change

Jul 25, 2007

I have a SQL 2k5 ent. 64 bit on Windows 2003 Ent x64 edition.

The sql server was running fine under localsystem account. Recently I changed the service account to a local user (part of users group in windows) and implemented permissions according to KB article 283811. (have imlpemented the same on many other sql servers without issue).

However, the SQL services are not starting up and I am seeing the following errors in the errorlog.

I have gone through the http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols but everything mentioned here seems to be there. I understand this is some permission issue. Just not able to find it out. Can anybody help?

Domain Account Without A SQL Login Account

Apr 25, 2007

I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.

Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.

Can't Set Up Start Up Service Account

Aug 25, 2000

Hi,

I am trying to set properties on a SQL Server7, but when I get to the tab for 'Startup Service account', it is greyed out. Also, the same for properties for SQL Server Agent.

Why can't I change it?

To schedule jobs, and have SQL mail, don't I need to set up a Startup Service Account?

Thanks for your help,
Judith

Moved Aspnetdb To SQL Server - What Permissions Do I Need To Give The ASP IIS Service Account For That? (Getting: Cannot Open Database Aspnetdb Requested By The Login. The Login Failed.)

May 12, 2008

I am getting the error:
Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
When I browse to my ASP.NET 3.5 LINQ web application on the IIS 6.0 server on Server 2003.
I imagine this is because while I granted SQL Server 2005 login and permissions to my database that the application stores its data in, I did NOT grant any rights to the service account the IIS Application Pool uses for its identity to the aspnetdb database on SQL Server which is where all my roles information is stored at.
My question is what are the MINIMUM permissions needed for this database so it can perform its roles related functions?
I'm using Windows Authentications with the SQL Role provider for authorization.

Thank you.

EDIT: I think I only need to open the aspnetdb database and add my login to the aspnet_Roles_FullAccess role.  Is that correct?

Cannot Get SQL Server Agent To Start Using New Account... Why?

Feb 28, 2007

Well, this is very confusing.

I have 2 servers that are members of the same AD Domain.

I need an account that can login to either one, but needs to be able to start a service, which my network admin says a local domain administrator cannot do.

So, I just decided to create an account with the same name, properties and password on both machines.

This I did. The account is a member of local Windows Administrator group on each server. Additionally, it is an SQL account on the SQL Server local instance, and a member of the SysAdmin group.

I can assign this account to SQL Server as the startup account (Log in with this account). That works fine.
However, when I assign this account to SQL Server, then SQL Server Agent quits running. So I try to assign this same account to this service and I get an error that the account 'Unknown' cannot login and needs to be a member of the SysAdmin group!??

This is a completely confusing error message since the account is a Windows Admin, SQL Server SysAdmin account and can start SQL Server fine without a hitch.

Anyone else having this very annoying problem ?!

Unable To Complete Login Process Due To Delay In Login Response

Jan 16, 2006

I receive this error message occasionally in my ETL - usually when trying to pull data from our source system:

An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.  An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "Login timeout expired".  An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "Unable to complete login process due to delay in login response".  An OLE DB record is available.  Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client"  Hresult: 0x80004005  Description: "TCP Provider: Timeout error [258]. ".
There is a setting in the connections manager, under the ALL tab, Initialization, Connect Timeout.  It is set to zero, which would be the default.  It appears (by looking at the timestamps in my error log) that the default is 15 seconds.  If I change this to a higher value (60 seconds or so) should this fix the error?

Thanks,

About Login Account

Jun 21, 2006

Hi everyone,
I have a simple question for you which is too important for me.
My question is about logins in my own(local) server.
I know that my local server(my computer's server) has to default login account which are called sa and BUILTIN/ADMINISTRATOR. While I am using my own server, I do not know which default login account is used by my Server since I use windows authentication while connecting to the Server.
Another question is that while adding new login account for my own Server, I noticed that there is a choice which is comprised of Grant and Deny for the Security. What is the meaning and usage of this ??

Thanks and Regards

Hi everybody !!!

I have SQLServer 2005 installed and I think a login account is corrupted because Im not able to connect to a database. I get an Timeout expiration error after I clicked on Login Properties or when I try to make a connection to SQLServer 2005 using that login account. Also I cannot review the script needed to create the login, but I do can review the database user properties mapped to this login account.

Is there a way to recreate or repair a login account??

The only solution I have right now is create another login accout, but this involves to modify database connection properties within my code.

Any help, comment or suggestion is really appreciated.

Service Account Password Change - Help!

Dec 3, 1999

Ugh! Someone changed the password of our SQL Server service account. It is called syssql, and it is used by the MSSQLServer and SQL Executive services to log in at startup. After the password was changed, we noticed that replication wasn’t running, and since I know that replication uses the Executive service, I restarted that service using the new password. That worked to get replication working again, and since the boxes were production machines I didn’t restart the MSSQLServer service with the new password yet. Now, our syssql account keeps on locking up every so often, and scheduled tasks that use xp_sendmail stopped working, and alerts stopped sending. Is this happening because of the MSSQLServer service still being logged in with the old password? I suspect that the SQL Mail logs in through the MSSQLServer service, which is still using the old password, and the login failures are causing the syssql account to lock. Any other ideas???

For example, I use one sql login account to connect between the website and db. Since I changed web server to window 2003. I got error message saying SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I then created another sql account instead of only one login account. now the website is running fine and faster than before.

I really don't understand it. Can anyone please explain it?

Thanks in advance!

SQL 2012 :: Service Account Change And Mirroring

As the title suggests we are looking to change the service account of a SQL mirror implementation. I will be using the same account on all 3 servers involved in the configuration.

I know each server requires the account of the other two adding but as this will be the same account I assume this doesn't apply?

Also for mirrored databases already set up would I need to reconfigure the security for each one?

Is there anything I am missing?

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Access Database Using Service Account

When I try to connect to the database using the account with the password I get [login failed for domainid]. The DBA mentioned that its setup to use windows auth, however, I can't connect with this service account using windows Auth, due to I'm using to connect via code.

How can I connect to the database from my code using this ID?

I have the ID and pwd in my code to connect with, does the ID have to be setup differently in the Database?

When I try to disable log shipping in order to recreate it, or if I try to edit the secondary server settings when I am logged in as SA, or my windows account which has the sysadmin role assigned, I get an error that says:

Only members of the sysadmin fixed server role can perform this operation. Error 21089.

I've restarted the sql service, disabled and enabled the permission on my account, but for the life of me, i cannot get this to work!

How Many People Can Login To SQL Server With The Same User Account?

Mar 8, 1999

I'm developing a client-server application using Visual Basic and SQL Server
6.5 for 700 users. The application currently requires users to login to the
database using their network account (via trusted connections). Each of the
users takes up a maximum of 6 connections. Unfortunately, other
considerations will force us to discard use of trusted connections. So it
only leaves us either to create 700 user accounts on SQL Server separately
from their network logins or to create one SQL Server account and everybody
uses that same account to login to the database. For political reasons, the
customer would prefer not to ask their support group to maintain 700 user
accounts on SQL Server if it can be avoided.

My question: is there any technical limitation or other negative consequence
of having 700 users login to the same account to SQL Server if SQL Server
can handle that many connections (it would be 6*700 = 4200 connections)
simultaneously? Are we supposed to do things like this? It seems that we
don’t have better choice than this.
