The Microsoft Jet Database Engine Cannot Open MS-Access Database
Aug 18, 2007
I have MS-Access as data source for one of the reports. I can preview the report fine from BI studio however, it does not work when I deploy it on report server.
The error is :
An error has occurred during report processing.
Cannot create a connection to data source '<data source name>'.
The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '<UNC location of the MS-Access database>'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.
MS-Access database is located on a different server.
Any help to solve this? I understand it has something to do with permission both on server where reporting service is running as well as the server where MS-access database is located. Pls help.
I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and now I can't connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 nor 2014 Express. The logs on both say it can't open master.mdf because it was originally formatted with a sector size 4096 but now it's 3072. But no sector sizes were changed. The only thing that changed was going from Windows 7 (64-bit) to Windows 10 (64-bit). How can this be resolved?
I have ran into the same problem ... Importing from Access into SQL 2005 using SSIS and get the error:
[Connection manager "SourceConnectionOLEDB"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft JET Database Engine" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Unspecified error".
I am very new to VB.Net but my goal is to build a web app that ineracts with an Access database. This is a very small scale app so I am not interested in using SQL server. I created my Access database and the udl file for connection information.
I created a class that opens a connection to the database when the webpage loads.
I get the following error though,
System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException was unhandled by user code ErrorCode=-2147467259 Message="The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file 'C:InetpubwwwrootTest1RaceData.mdb'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data." Source="Microsoft JET Database Engine" StackTrace: at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionInternal..ctor(OleDbConnectionString constr, OleDbConnection connection) at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionFactory.CreateConnection(DbConnectionOptions options, Object poolGroupProviderInfo, DbConnectionPool pool, DbConnection owningObject) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionFactory.CreateNonPooledConnection(DbConnection owningConnection, DbConnectionPoolGroup poolGroup) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionFactory.GetConnection(DbConnection owningConnection) at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionClosed.OpenConnection(DbConnection outerConnection, DbConnectionFactory connectionFactory) at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection.Open() at clsDBConn.Open_Connection() in c:inetpubwwwrootTest1App_CodeclsDBConn.vb:line 12 at Default2.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) in c:inetpubwwwrootTest1Default2.aspx.vb:line 8 at System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)
The database is not open so I know it is a matter of security. I have configured IIS to use an admin account and the Access db does not have security turned on. In the UDL file I have selected read/write access and the test connection works.
Can anyone help me narrow down the root of this error,
Today we are very pleased to announce the RTW release of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Access Database Synchronizer (ADS) for which many of you been waiting eagerly.
Access Database Synchronizer provides a way to synchronize data between Microsoft Access database on a desktop and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition database on a device.
The salient features of this solution are summarized below Ø Provides a synchronization solution between SQL Mobile/SSCE and MS Access. Data conversion is done while synchronizing the data. Ø Synchronization happens when there is an active ActiveSync connection between the device and the desktop. Ø There is no update to SQL Mobile/SSCE on the device. The solution consists of only of desktop side component which works with the existing client agent on the device. Ø The solution is based on existing RDA replication model. Programming model is exactly the same as RDA today. Ø Device applications written today do not need to be updated if the solution is upsized from access to SQL Server. Ø There is no conflict detection/resolution.
The setup installs the desktop component required for synchronizing Microsoft Access database with SQL Server Compact Edition database on the device. It also includes a readme file which has the documentation for the solution and a sample application. The readme file can be downloaded separately. The sample application shows how the solution works and how to write applications for this solution. The components installed on the desktop can be used by third party applications to provide data synchronization between Microsoft Access database on the desktop and SQL Server Compact/SQL Mobile database on the device.
On a desktop, the following operating systems will be supported: Ø Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 Ø Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Ø Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with Windows XP MCE 2005 Update Rollup 2installed. Ø Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition SP2 Ø Microsoft Windows Vista (Only Windows Mobile 6.0 devices are supported)
On devices, the following operating systems will be supported: Ø Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Ø Windows CE 4.2 Ø Windows CE 5.0 Ø Windows Mobile 5.0 Ø Windows Mobile 6.0
The following versions of Microsoft Access will be supported: Ø Microsoft Access 2000 SP3 (Microsoft Office 2000) Ø Microsoft Access 2002 SP3 (Microsoft Office 2002) Ø Microsoft Office Access 2003 SP2 (Microsoft Office 2003) Ø Microsoft Office Access 2007
This solution will work with all installations for SQL Server Mobile Edition/SQL Server Compact Edition on devices. The sample application provided is supported only on Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC edition.
For more details on ADS please see the readme ADS Readme

Someone please help, Ive downloaded and instsalled Microsoft Access Database Synchronizer (ADS) RTW onto my desktop and the files have installed to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1SyncAccess. Ive got a device running windows CE 5.0 connected to the desktop via USB. Ive installed all the necessary CAB files onto the device but how do I get the ADS working? What do I have to do with the files installed? I am fairly new to this so can someone please help me. Isnt there supose to be an option in the start menu to run the wizard, i don't seem to be getting this?
we can´t open most of the sql server tables from our Access project any more, which has to be related to collation or extended property problems.
trying to open any table will result in the information "The stored procedure has been executed but did not return any records" after the first try and later on nothing will happen any more; tables won´t open.
basically this started to happen after recreating the sql database due to resolution 1 in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 318989: collation of the server is Latin1_General_CI_AS collation of the old database was SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS, which led to the error described in the article. collation of the new database is set to <Database Standard>, now i have the problems described above.
anybody some good help on that?
ps: we can´t really rebuild the user database all the time, because we got flight data in about 4 billion records in there, so we will need anything quick and easy... thanks
I have microsoft access database. I want to use this database as source of SSIS transformation. I have a data flow task which I want to get executed in Transaction with TransactionOption as "Required".
I tried using OLEDB datasource which uses oledb connection. I also tried using ADO.NET connection type with DataReader DataSource.
But in all cases at run time, it fires an error message as follows: [DataReader Source [1]] Error: System.InvalidOperationException: The ITransactionLocal interface is not supported by the 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider. Local transactions are unavailable with the current provider. at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionInternal.EnlistTransactionInternal(Transaction transaction, Boolean forcedAutomatic) at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnectionInternal.EnlistTransaction(Transaction transaction) at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection.EnlistTransaction(Transaction transaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.ManagedHelper.GetManagedConnection(String assemblyQualifiedName, String connStr, Object transaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSConnectionManager90.AcquireConnection(Object pTransaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.DataReaderSourceAdapter.AcquireConnections(Object transaction) at Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.ManagedComponentHost.HostAcquireConnections(IDTSManagedComponentWrapper90 wrapper, Object transaction)
If I remove the transaction, the data flow task works perfectly fine. Please suggest What mistake I am doing while connecting to MS Access database in side transaction??
The same mentioned configuration WITH TRANSACTION works perfectly fine for SQL Server AS SOURCE. Am I missing some very obvious thing?? Please suggest.
Hi All, I have recently moved jobs. From my last job I created a holiday database for the organisation, than I copied it on a storage device. Now, in my new job I would like to use same database. But the problem is most of the tables were linked. I know I can convert linked tables to local tables and I have tried it but it asks me for the new location with the same table names. Can some one please helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp I as I am really very desperate.
Hi there guys, I am currently trying to achieve a seemingly simple task in VC++ 2005. I have made a very simple form in Microsoft Access which I wish to serve as the beginnings of something greater. I created a db in MS Access named links.mdb containing on table-> Table1. Table1 contains 1 column, "Links", and i wish to read these strings into variables in my Visual C++ Windows Forms Application.
What I have done so far...
In Visual C++, I clicked on Data->Add new data source, and followed the wizard to add the microsoft access database to my application by the name, "linksDataSet". I can see the table in my left hand "Data Sources" pane in VC++. All I need to know is how to access my database from here so that I can read these strings stored in my table. Also, would be possible to schedule my application to log on to a http server and retrieve these links every time the application is executed? How would I go about doing this?
Event 17204, FCB::Open failed: Could not open file F:MSSQLDatafilename.mdf for file number 1. Â OS error: 5(Access is denied.).When I look at the file permissions of filename.mdf, there is no MSSQLSERVER group permissions listed nor can I add it. I have tried to add MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICEMS SQL $MSSQLSERVER but neither exist. There is also a ReportServer.mdf in the same folder with MSSQLSERVER permissions!Did I somehow delete this group? What can I do to restore this permission?
I want to use SQL Server to query an Access Database with about 40,000 rows of data. If possible, I don't want to upsize the database because others need acess to it in the ACC97 format. Is there a way to use ODBC to connect to the ACC97 database so that I can use the SQL query capability of SQL server to query the database.
I know access allows you to write some SQL queries but I need the power of the SQL server and now it is a matter of curiosity because I've been searching for this answer for about 8 hours.
- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition - Client Service for Netware installed. - Access 2000 database in a Novell Directory Services (NDS) Environment - SQL Server service running under local Administrator account.
Linked server configured as follow:
Linked server: MyDB Provider: Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider Product name: Access 2000 Data Source: UNC path to my Access database
Security: Admin with no password (default Access behaviour)
I can connect to my access database by following the next steps:
- Open Management studio on the SQL Server itself (where I'm logged in as Administrator) - Connect using Windows Authentication (Administrator) - Create a new query, run EXEC sp_tables_ex 'MyDB'
This will return all the tables from the Access database.
I can also make a view pointing to MyDB...MyTable.
Enough prove to me It can work....
So far so good
But now the tricky part.
When I login as 'sa', I can't connect and will receive the following message:
OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "MyDB" returned message "'Full UNC to my access database' is not a valid path. Make sure that the path name is spelled correctly and that you are connected to the server on which the file resides.".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_tables_ex, Line 41Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "MyDB".
(In real life I want to connect to my SQL 2005 Server from a ASP.NET (2.0) application using SQL authentication, but as long as I can't get the above working this is not important for now)
I cannot open now my database after changing it name from the folder where it is save and also changed back to its original name.Message recovery pending now is appearing as shown below.Any chance that I could recover my database back?
I installed SQL 2005 including backward compatibility, MSDN libraries and SP2 a new Windows 2003 server (chose mixed mode authentication). Installation was successful and I then installed an off the shelf database with Windows authentication which also installed successfully. I created a new group in AD, added the database users into the group and gave db-owner rights to the group in SQL as advised by the installation guide. However, when I try to open the database it gives an error message saying "Cannot open database.[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).] SQL server does not exist or access denied". I also tested it adding an individual user (myself) as a user to no avail. When I set up DSN in ODBC on my computer I can successfully test the connection but can't run the application. The connection is via TCP/IP. Any suggestions?
I am receving this error: Failed to open the connection: [Database Vendor Code: 17 ], from .Net 2003/C# to Crystal Report XI with SQL Server 2000 has backend database.
Is there a security permission that has been overlooked?
//Get Table inf from report DB = reportDocument..Database; tables = DB.Tables;
//Looping through all the tables in CR and apply connection info for(int i = 0; i < tables.Count; i++) { table = tables[ i ]; tableLogOnInfo = table.LogOnInfo; tableLogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo = connectionInfo; table.ApplyLogOnInfo(tableLogOnInfo);
I have just finished configuring my first test mirrored environment (High safety mode). I setup the database engine service accounts on each of the servers with domainuser. I inherited a production mirrored environment set up by someone else. On the production servers the database engine service account is NT Authorityuser a local account. I am trying to practice installing Windows updates within a mirrored environment and I not sure how to proceed when the service account is NT Authority user account. should I change the service account to a domainuser?
I get the below error only when my IDE open. It connects well when it is found closed. [SqlException (0x80131904): Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'JPASPNET'.] I could solve this by giving the logged in windows user to impersonate under IIS window > WEBSITE > ASP.NET tab > EDIT CONFIG > APPLICATION tab But I wish someone could give me the proper solution. I almost tried all from giving ASPNET user as a administrator to configuring the same in Express management tool. Environment: XP pro, VWD and SQL Express
I am trying to modify the files path (primary file, log file) of databases, but it looks like I am not able to mofidy their files path directly from the database property dialogue? Would please any experts here give me some ideas on what else can I try to figure it out? Thanks a lot in advance and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
We have a back end procedure that inserts/updates records in a table. Usually the upload file will have around 20k records. This procedure is called from our application which is designed using hibernate, struts.
Upload is getting completed. But after the upload is over and control goes to application code, we are again hitting the above table to get some details. Is this the root cause for the below issue?
This is what we get in application logs,
SQL Error: 4060, SQLState: S1000 2007-04-30 16:17:27,840 - ERROR [TP-Processor2] JDBCExceptionReporter.logExceptions(58) | Cannot open database "sdgebis" requested by the login. We have been asked to look into using stored procedures with SQL Server 7.0 as a way to speed up a clients site. 99% of all the articles I have read along with all the books all say Stored Procedure should be used whenever possible as opposed to putting the SQL in your ASP script. However one of my colleagues has been speaking to Microsoft and they said that that they were surprised that our client wanted to use Stored Procedures as this was the old method of database access and that now he should really consider using COM objects for data access as itis much faster. Has anyone got any views on this or know of any good aticles regarding this matter ?
hi experts, acutually i had configured the online application in my local pc..when i try to configure the database , it seems to be a vc++ intellisense database file(.ncb extension)..Actually i am working on ms sqlserver..i don't know how to open the vc++ database in mssqlserver...pls help me.. regards senthil.d
<add name ="ASPNETDBConnectionString1" connectionString ="Data Source= .SQLEXPRESS; Integrated Security = True; DataBase = ASPNETDB.MDF; User ID = MyWindowsUserName; Password = MyWindowsPassword; User Instance = False; Connect Timeout = 30" providerName ="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
I tried to research on the internet and i got a solution on changing the permissions for this database to enable user SystemName/ASPNET, but iam not able to access this ASPNETDB.MDF from SqlServer and if i go to server explorer in vs2005, i dint know where to chage the permissions.
We have a SQL database that uses Active Directory with Windows Authentication. Can users that are members of the Active Directory group that has read/write access to the SQL database create ODBC connections to access the database directly and update the data? They dont have individual logins on the server. They are only members of the Active Directory group that has a login?
Dear All, i have a question abt winCE 4.2 and SQL server CE. i am using VB.net of Visual Studio 2005 My platform is using a PDA with winCE 4.2 and SQL server CE. The Host program is using dbf files on desktop side.
I got a problem of how to sync / read the sql CE data from a windows application.
so, i wanna ask,
1. any method to access the data from winCE data by windows application? or can i convert the sdf file to windows readable files? or any others?
2. Can i use a MDB to sync with SQL server CE? can i synchronize the mobile device which has a SQL Server CE database with the Access database on the desktop?
last question, 3. is that windows CE .net 4.2 not support pocket access (cdb) anymore?

I need detailed instructions on how to connect to a database from a Microsoft Access 2007 database to a Microsft Office Accounting 2007 database. The accounting database is an SQL 2005 datbase. It has an instance name of "MSSMLBIZ".
When I try I get an SQL error 53. Do not have permissions or database does not exist.
I'am doing functionality test on DTS packages and saving my DTS packages to meta data services instead of saving them as local packages. We would like to see what information would be provided by saving them this way, but when we try to open the meta data browser (the 3rd icon under DTS) we get the following error:
An error occurred while trying to access the database information. The msdb database could not be opened.
Hi I am wondering if anyone knows of a way of synchroniseing two versions of a database one in access and one in sql server so they can both run in parrallel in ssis for updates etc.
Also can anyone recommend a book which is easy to use or resources as I can't find what I am looking for in the online help.
I've used the ADS sample program and it works well. I looked at the code and changed it to VB (sorry, I'm not biligual yet), and have tried to 'adjust' it so I can connect to a remote PC (XP running IIS) instead of the local PC using the workgroup information database (system.mdw). Any ideas of the connection string that could make the connection?..my intention is to RDA once a week between a mobile device (3g/gsm) and a 'poor man's' IIS web server. I've tried everything I can think of, and I'm sure its possible since all I'm doing is changing the connection path.
I have a quick question regarding getting data from a SQL database but I am slightly confused as to the best way to handle it.
Basically on of the projects I am working on I need to send data to another company, there are several calls required to the database to bring back various options for changing the questions asked on the front end.
Up to now all that has happened is there has been a mutual agreement between myself and this other company and they have just had access to the database to call a series of stored procs which I have written for them to access the data. Recently however the situation has changed and my client wants me stop them accessing the database however they still need to recieve the information from the database they recieve now.
What will be the best way to handle this? My knowledge of SQL is farily limited presently and I am only ust getting into learning a lot more about it.
