TSQL - Using ALTER TABLE - ALTER COLUMN To Modify Column Type / Set Identity Column

Sep 7, 2007

Hi guys,
If I have a temporary table called #CTE
With the columns
[Account]
[Name]
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
and I need to change the column type for the columns:
[RowID Table Level]
[RowID Data Level]
to integer, and set the column [RowID Table Level] as Identity (index) starting from 1, incrementing 1 each time.
What will be the right syntax using SQL SERVER 2000?

I am trying to solve the question in the link below:
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2093921&SiteID=1

Thanks in advance,
Aldo.

I have tried the code below, but getting syntax error...

ALTER TABLE #CTE
ALTER COLUMN
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

I have also tried:

ALTER TABLE #CTE
MODIFY
[RowID Table Level] INT IDENTITY(1,1),
[RowID Data Level] INT;

Multiple Columns With Different Values OR Single Column With Multiple Criteria?

Aug 22, 2007

Hi,

I have multiple columns in a Single Table and i want to search values in different columns. My table structure is

col1 (identity PK)
col2 (varchar(max))
col3 (varchar(max))

I have created a single FULLTEXT on col2 & col3.
suppose i want to search col2='engine' and col3='toyota' i write query as

SELECT

TBL.col2,TBL.col3
FROM

TBL
INNER JOIN

CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col2,'engine') TBL1
ON

TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]
INNER JOIN

CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col3,'toyota') TBL2
ON

TBL.col1=TBL2.[key]

Every thing works well if database is small. But now i have 20 million records in my database. Taking an exmaple there are 5million record with col2='engine' and only 1 record with col3='toyota', it take substantial time to find 1 record.

I was thinking this i can address this issue if i merge both columns in a Single column, but i cannot figure out what format i save it in single column that i can use query to extract correct information.
for e.g.;
i was thinking to concatinate both fields like
col4= ABengineBA + ABBToyotaBBA
and in search i use
SELECT

TBL.col4
FROM

TBL
INNER JOIN

CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col4,' "ABengineBA" AND "ABBToyotaBBA"') TBL1
ON

TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]
Result = 1 row

But it don't work in following scenario
col4= ABengineBA + ABBCorola ToyotaBBA

SELECT

TBL.col4
FROM

TBL
INNER JOIN

CONTAINSTABLE(TBL,col4,' "ABengineBA" AND "ABB*ToyotaBBA"') TBL1
ON

TBL.col1=TBL1.[key]

Result=0 Row
Any idea how i can write second query to get result?

Check For Column Existance Before Alter Table Statement

Feb 14, 2000

Hello all,

I am trying to add columns to several tables in a singular database. I want to check to see if the column exists in a given table first before executing the alter table command so that I can skip that command if the column already exists, and avoid aborting my script prematurely. I can't seem to find a way to check for the column's existance. Any suggestions?

DB Engine :: Does ALTER COLUMN Statement Converts Data?

Oct 8, 2015

I've some huge table (over 100GB each), these table contain column of NTEXT, IMAGE. Application team needs to change these data types to VARBINARY(MAX), I've tested the modification in our lab and I noticed that the operation has been almost immediate so, I think that DB Engnine has not converted the existing data in the column but it has simply changed the definition of the column.

Or maybe NTEXT and IMAGE can be transparently converted into VARBINARY(MAX)?

Anyway, I want to be sure that the modified table is "coherent" I don't want that at a given point SQL Server tells me that some data is not readable.

Update Multiple Varbinary Records With Single Sql Statement

Jan 16, 2007

I am renovating an existing application and am converting the existing passwords into hashed values using SHA1. I know how to compute the hashed values as a byte array for each record. What I don't know how to do easily is update all of the records i a single call to the database. Normally, I would just do the following:UPDATE HashedPassword = someValue WHERE UserID = 101;
UPDATE HashedPassword = someOtherValue WHERE UserID = 102;
...

What I don't know is what someValue and someOtherValue should be. How do I convert my byte array into string representation that SQL will accept? I usually execute multiple statements using Dim oCmd as New SqlCommand(sSQL, MyConn) and then call oCmd.ExecuteNonQuery().
Alternatively, I found the following code that uses the byte array directly but only shows a single statement. How could I use it to execute multiple statements as shown above?'FROM http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/103002-1.2.aspx

'2. Create a command object for the query
Dim strSQL as String = _
"INSERT INTO UserAccount(Username,Password) " & _
"VALUES(@Username, @Password)"
Dim objCmd as New SqlCommand(strSQL, objConn)

'3. Create parameters
Dim paramUsername as SqlParameter
paramUsername = New SqlParameter("@Username", SqlDbType.VarChar, 25)
paramUsername.Value = txtUsername.Text
objCmd.Parameters.Add(paramUsername)

Dim paramPwd as SqlParameter
paramPwd = New SqlParameter("@Password", SqlDbType.Binary, 16)
paramPwd.Value = hashedBytes
objCmd.Parameters.Add(paramPwd)

'Insert the records into the database
objConn.Open()
objCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()
objConn.Close()

Multiple Columns Index/Key (does It Free Me From Creating A Single Column Indexes???)

Apr 12, 2007

I hope i'm in the right place, but thanks anyway....

Actually i have 2 questions (regarding sql-server Indices/Keys):

1) I have an index, which is consisted of 4 columns.

I've read elsewhere that this index functions (as well) as an index (single column

index) on the first column of this multi-column index.

Does this mean that if i'd like to have (in addition) Indices on all of the 4 columns

seperately i need to define only 3???

2) I have a unique key consisted of multiple columns.

I'd like to save an index to this combination of columns as well (to speed up

things in DB...).

Does the definition of a multiple-columns key free me from defining the multiple-

columns index???

can anyone explain the main diference between Keys and Indices???

Multiple Column Update Statement

Hi,

I'm new to SQL Server but not new to SQL because I used it with Oracle. I wonder if it is possible to do this kind of statement on SQL Server:

UPDATE TableX M
SET (M.column1, M.column2, M.column3)=
(SELECT T.column1, T.column2, G.column3)
FROM Table_Y T,
Table_Z G
WHERE join condition))
WHERE EXISTS (join condition for TableX)

Basically, I'd like to update multiple columns in one statement but for some reason I can not get it to work.

What would be the equivalent on SQL Server?

Thanks for the help,
