Upgrading SQL Server 2000 Standard To SQL Server 2000 Enterprise

I am currently running SQL Server 2000 Standard on my production system, and I am looking to upgrade the system to Windows 2000 Adv. Server. I would also like to upgrade SQL Server 2000 Standard to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise to utilize more than 2GB of memory. Can anyone tell me what is the best way to upgrade the system, and please provide some feedback on your experiences with the upgrade. Thanks in advance.
How do SQL 2000 service packs play a role in upgrading? That is, can SQL 2000 Standard with no Service Packs(SP) be upgraded to SQL 2005 Standard, or does SQL 2000 Standard have to have a certain service pack??
Hi, One of our main servers running on SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition which has transactional replications on it which replicates to other servers running on the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition as well.
Due to Hardware problems the server is being migrated to a new machine but the client has installed SQL Server 2000 standard edition on the new machine.
We will be using a two processor cpu with 4GB RAM and we are also not planning about clustering. Is there any problem if i migrate the server in Standard Edition will the replications work properly between Standard and Enterprise editions.
What other complications can be there if i switch over to standard edition from enterprise edition
Hi there Our ISP hosts our data on SQL Server Enterprise, but I also going to host the databases on my local machine. As it's just local would Standard edition do? If I migrate the databases over, will it work? Thanks in advance.
Is SQL Server 2000 Standard an option for a web application ? OR Only Enterprise version should be used for a web application because the standard version cannot support fully a web application?
I did all the stuff necessary for the upgrading (the Upgrade Advisor didn't say anything special), but the Setup says the following:
" Name: Microsoft SQL Server 7.00.1063 Cause: The update is blocked. You can obtain more informations in the online help "Versions- and editionsupdates".
Editions problem: The update is blocked because of rules for the editions update. "
Is it possible that an upgrade is not possible with the evaluation edition? Or can there be another cause?
Does anyone know of a resource that describes the steps to upgrade an instance of MSDE(2000) to SQL 2005 Standard?
We found something on a MS site that indirectly indicated you could upgrade the MSDE to SQL Express and then upgrade Express to the full version of 2005, but that method created quite a bit of problems(System databases), which we were not able to resolve short of uninstalling MSDE and the apps and installing SQL 2005 and re-installing the apps; but I have to believe there is a better way.

I am using SQL server 2000 enterprise edition installed on the machine. Now I wanted to change the edition from enterprise to standard. There are around 4 user databases exists on the server. What are the areas I have to take care while doing this? Could I do as normal installation? No log shipping implemented on the server.

I am attempting to upgrade a 2005 Standard Edtion to Enterprise Edition. This is a default instance. All components are upgraded successfully except the Database Engine. I receive the following error:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
This installation does not have encryption enabled, so I do not undersand the error or how to correct it.
After rebooting the SQL instance appears to be upgraded to Enterprise, but it cannot be upgraded to SP2.
I need to max out on RAM somewhere around 3 to 4 GB and I am using SQL 2000. Standard SQL 2000 RAM is limited to 2 GB. SQL Enterprise 2000 is maxed out around 32GB and it cost is $1K. I need to purchase a Windows based SQL package but I can't find the specs on SQL Standard 2003 (which is ~$700) to compare. What is the Max RAM for SQL Standard 2003? Which is a better purchase relative to RAM? What O/S is recommended as this also limits RAM usage?
Will it be possible to do an in-place upgrade from SQL 2000 Server Enterprise SP4 32 bit running on top of 64 bit Windows 2003 Enterprise , clustered, to SQL 2005 Enterprise 64 bit? The 32 bit SQL 2000 to 64 bit SQL 2005 in place upgrade seems questionable to me... Anybody tried anything like this?
We are upgrading a production database server to new hardware. The server is currently running SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. We are thinking about installing SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition, however that would mean the test server (2000 Standard) and production server (2000 Enterprise) have different edtions of SQL Server. How much of a risk does this present? Later in the year we would upgrade test to SQL Server 2000 EE, but for a couple of months the environments would be different.
I have kind of an urgent need here. I need to know if there is a dll file or registry key or something of that nature that I can query on to find out if my SQL 2000 installations are Enterprise or Standard.
I understand I can do this using query analyser, but that will not work with my reporting tool (this is for reporting numbers of SQL installations in our very large enterprise for Microsoft license compliance).

I have a SQL 2000 Clustered Virtual Instance which is of course Enterprise Edition as it is clustered. I need to upgrade to 2005, but dont need the 2005 Enterprise features, Standard will do, as this supports clustering.
The restrictions are that you cant upgrade 200Ent to 2005Std.
As this is a fairly complex environment, it has a default instance running on node 1 and a named instance running on node 2 I dont particularly want to uninstall both 2000 instances, and then install new 2005 instances
So is it possible to upgrade to 2005 ent, and then downgrade to standard. I have seen a suggestion without any details, that there is an undocumented sp, sp_update_resume, that might do this. Does anyone know about this
Or does anybody have any other suggestions. (the names of the instances have to be the same, as the existing instances)
We are migration few database from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server)
Problem :
- The performance difference observer was not much (Just 15-18%)
- The CPU Utilization goes to 100% immediately, when the software login screen appears and it sustains in between 90% to 100%
- Multi-User Access (3 or more concurrent users), the sql performance is tremendously slow.
Steps followed for Migration:
- We have used the backup and restore method to migrate the data from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server).
- We ran the DBCC DBREINDEX for each affected tables
- We executed the sp_updatestats procedure for all the tables
- Upgraded the DB compatibility version to 90
- Installed the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server) Service pack 2.
One thing that we observed, was the memory usage, on SQL 2000 the sqlservr.exe uses around 1.5 GB where as on the SQL 2005 its just 120 MB.
A normal select query on 2000 Server took 11-12 sec, having 10 lac records, and the same query on 2005 took 1 min (3-5 sec CPU process taken by sqlservr and rest by the Sever Management Studio.
The only differance noted was that on 2000 the entire data was displayed at one go where as in 2005 the data was displayed at the 1st sec, and was filling the rest in the buffer, and to finally display entire data it took 1 min.

I have installed the SQL Server 2000 developer that came with Office XP Developer. I now have a copy of SQL Server 2000 Standard. What will happen if I try to install the standard version? Will I loss any of my current database logins or settings, etc...?
We have SQL 2005 standard edition and Reporting Services installed on the same server. We are now upgrading from standard to enterprise edition, so we ran setup and let it do its thing. This upgraded SQL Server without any problems but it failed to upgrade Reporting Services. We got a message saying "...set up did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.5Reporting ServicesReport Server ssrvpolicy.config...".
As we tried to upgrade reporting services using the same administrator account we cannot understand why this error would occur. From checking the version of SQL Server to Reporting Services we have 9.00.1399.06 on SQL Server and 9.00.1399.00 on Reporting Services so I presume this proves the upgrade did not work?
Hi, I'm planning an upgrade of SQL 7.0 on NT 4.0 to SQL 2000 and of course I will attempt to upgrade the OS to Windows 2000 first. Can anyone tell me of any issues I may run across during this upgrade? Can I assume that SQL 7.0 will run ok on Windows 2000?
We just upgraded 2 sql servers from sql server 2000 sp3a to sql server 2005 build 2153, and merge rep exists between these 2 servers.
However, after sql server upgrade, we had to reinitialize merge replication and now the merge agent is reporting 2 errors

looking inside the sp_MSensure_single_instance stored procedure, it's trying to obtain an exclusive lock on resource 'Merge Agent Name' but fails and returns -1
this is the stored procedure executed by sp_MSensure_single_instance and @retcode = -1 and thus cannot obtain exclusive lock on resource
so i think it's failing because for some reason MSmerge_PAL_role database role does not have enough rights to obtain exclusive lock on necessary resources
i've tried many things to fix this, including scripting out and dropping all merge rep, turning off replication db option and reapplying replication create scripts on the server, and even manually deleting the MSmerge_PAL_role database role but still doesn't work
Hi , We are using the a 4 CPU SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition for our application , We want to migrate to SQL2005 with the compatibility level downgraded to SQL2000. If we go for the SQL2005 Standard edition is there any problem? We are not using the Failover clustering in our server.

We have 2 SQL servers in a failover cluster environment. SQL1 and SQL2. Currently SQL1 is the primary in the cluster, and we need to upgrade from Service Pack 3 to Service Pack 4.
Our setup:
Both servers are Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition. Both servers have SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3.
My question is:
Which upgrade plan do I take? Do I:
1. Upgrade the backup (offline) server in the cluster (SQL2) first, reboot, then failover from SQL1 to SQL2? Then do the other server?
2. Upgrade the primary (online) server in the cluster (SQL1) first and see if it replicates to the backup?
I restored a 2000 database back up in to my 2005 database and it works fine. THe only problem is that I cannot create diagrams.
I get the following message:
Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects.
I have checked the db_owner and that is a valid owner.
I changed a few times to different owners and still could not install the diagrams..
I have to upgrade and move SQL Server 2000 databases from a platform using Server 2000 to one running SQL Server 2005. The server nameinstances will need to be the same so that a number of third party applications and front end systems that connect, and are outside of my control, will not need any data source changes. The servers will be on the same network and can't co-exist with the same name so I guess that I have to go "big bang".
Does anyone have any suggestions for a strategy that I can use? Does anyone know of any issues that I should be aware of?
I have run the SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor and it tells me the databases should upgrade OK with a few minor issues that can be fixed after.
I had two Window NT 4.0 Server, say A and B... We recently upgraded from MS SQL Server 6.5 to MS SQL Server 2000 on Computer A, and for Computer B, I installed SQL Server 2000 from scratch. These two have a same RAM(512MB) and CPU speed...so the setup for hardware is almost identical...
For server A, there are around 10 connection to this SQL Server... For server B, there are also around 10 connection to this SQL Server...
The database for SQL Server B is a copy from SQL Server A.... I restored the database on SQL Server B from the backup dump of Server A...
We have a store procedure called usp_GetMemo(ID Interger) ... we feed ID number to this store procedure and return its return Description... this table has ID column and it's Non-Cluster index, allow the duplicate row... there are 1.7 million records for this table...
Here is problem... whenever i execute more than 100 times for this store procedure(usp_GetMemo(ID)) continuously, the CPU usage of Computer A is 3 times bigger than computer B....
I did run the command "DBCC DBReindex" , "Update Statistics" for this table on computer A, but did not make any difference...
Keep in mind that Computer A has been upgraded to SQL server 2000 while Computer B installed from scratch... would that make difference somehow?? Before the upgrading, the CPU usage of computer A is the same as Computer B...

I'm trying to upgrade a Microsoft SQL 2000 (8.00.760 SP3) server to SQL 2005.
It€™s a standard install, std version, not very big databases, default instance, plenty of memory etc. OS is a 2003 server recently upgraded from 2000. All patches etc are installed.
Upgrade was going fine and had got approx 90% through, had started the 2005 db service and converted the databases before it got the following error:

Partially rolled back, rebooted and resumed install but failed in the same place. Ended going back to a backup snapshot so is now back running as SQL 2000.
