Can I Install SQLServer2000 Developer Edition To My PC If I Already Have MSDE Installed?

Feb 13, 2006

In  the past I've used MSDE with Visual Studio.NET 2003.  I'm going to start studying for an MCP in SQL Server 2000 so I'll probably get SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.  Will I be able to install this on my PC if it already has MSDE installed, or will I need to remove MSDE, etc?  If there are any other things I need to be aware of please let me know.
Also should I stick with SQL Server 2000 while studying for the exam, or would I probably be able to use SQL Server 2005 with a book that uses SQL Server 2000? I don't know how different they are.

Desktop Platform Support For SQL Server Compact Edition?

Sep 10, 2007

Hi-

I am doing some technology research for a new app and was wondering about the desktop operating system support for SQL Server compact edition. This app has a PC component and a mobile component, and both need to be data enabled, with syncronization between the PC and the mobile device.

So it seems like SSCE would be a good fit. Just run the SSCE client on both the PC and the device. But in the system requirements for SSCE it only gives XP as a valid desktop OS...

Is that correct? Obviously, desktop platform support for a production app will need to be broader than just XP.

Will SSCE desktop run on Win98,Win2000,XP Home, and Vista?

Unable To Connect To SSIS Or SSRS On SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition Server Via Desktop Connection

Mar 8, 2008

Hi,

I€™ve developed a BI system using the SQL Server 2005 Developer€™s Edition.

SSAS, SSIS and SSRS have been added to a SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition Server in preparation for delivering the developed database to this live environment.

So I am able to connect directly to the Database Engine, SSAS, SSIS and SSRS successfully from the actual SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition box which is sat on a Windows 2003 Server operating system.

However when I launch SQL Server Management Studio from a desk top PC which is connected to the SQL Server Standard Edition box I can€™t connect to either SSIS or SSRS, however I can connect to the Database Engine and it also seems that I can connect to SSAS OK.

I am using Windows Authentication where the I used a SQL Server account which exists with €œsysadmin€? permissions and this SQL Server account has the same login name as the Windows Server 2003 desktop login.

What do I do next please?

How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?

Aug 21, 2007

I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Release A

Feb 17, 2004

My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.

I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).

When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:

"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."

Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?

I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

Errors Installing MSDE Desktop

Nov 7, 2004

HELP! this is driving me mad!!

I installed MSDE desktop with no problems... months later when creating a database, I stupidily forgot the "sa" password that I set during setup... So I decided to unistall MSDE and reinstall it, this time documenting the username and password... BUT now it is giving me errors which I am unable to solve... is there anyone out there that might be able to help me??

I go to a command-line, locate the directory where the install program lives and type in "setup SAPWD=(a password) SecurityMode=SQL" and it returns the follow error message:
"Setup Failed to configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup error logs"

My problem is I don't know where to locate these error logs. Please if anyone can help me with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks, Donald - email = pizzazzz@cox.net

A Question Regarding MSDE Desktop Engine

Feb 19, 2005

Dear all,

This week I was told to setup MSDE Desktop Engine on my pc bcz my Access back end db is getting bigger in size. And as a little advance step, I decided to put my Access back end on SQL server.

To be frank, I have no experience with SQL server but after reading the instructions, I have installed MSDE (latest version) on my pc successfully. A small icon of SQL server appeared nearby clock icon of my pc showing the SQL server is running on ASHFAQUEPC.

I shifted a Trial db onto this server in following way.

Considering the opened Trial db would be my BE, from the Tools---Database Utility---Upsize wizard, I followed below steps according to Upsize wizard.

1.I selected ‘Local’ server and check marked to ’Use Trusted Connection’.
2.And then I selected some tables to export
3.Kept all default attributes of db as it is
4.Selected ‘Let the wizard decide’ under data option to include.
5.At the next step ‘What application change do you want to make?
a.Create a new Access client/Server application.
b.Link SQL Server tables to existing application.
c.No application changes. (I selected this option)

Then it showed me the report of my db description of changes that were made after deploying it. The report I did not print bcz it was a trial db with one table (2 fields) and a simple query.

My idea was to connect my Trial BE with another one of another Access mdb file so FE would be Access and BE would be from MSDE.

1.Now I don’t know how to link my BE to my FE?
2.From where I can directly see my BE? Because SQL Server Service Manager does
not have any menu?
3.Where I was wrong in following steps?

Guidance in this regards is highly appreciated.

With kind regards,
Ashfaque

Need MSDE - But Installed SQL

Sep 29, 2001

Customer has an SBS 2000 server setup, and had installed SQL Server 2000 on it. They have an application (Time Slips) which I thought could use SQL, but apparently they bought the standard edition which only supports the use of MSDE.

I thought MSDE was like SQL 2000 "lite". I want to house the MSDE database on the server, but it says it cannot find MSDE.

Do I need to uninstall SQL 2000 Server? And where do I go to install MSDE properly on the server, and what is required for each W2K Pro workstation?

MSDE Upgrade To SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2

Sep 26, 2007

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade MSDE 2000 to MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 (Build 9.00.3042.0) using a silent install.
MSDE on our systems is installed as a standalone product. There is only a single default instance (MSSQLSERVER) running on the system. SQL Authentication mode is being used.
When I try and upgrade MSDE 2000 directly to MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2, the install fails with an error:

"SQL Server Setup Cannot Upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server Credential. You must use Windows Authentication credential for the upgrade"

When I try to upgrade the default instance of MSDE to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 selecting Windows authentication (logging in as a domain/local administrator to the server), the install fails with an error:

"Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration. The error was: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Login failed for user <mydomain><AdminID>"

However, MSDE 2000 upgrade to an earlier version of MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (Build 9.00.1399.6) using SA Authentication works successfully without any errors.

So I tried to upgrade our MSDE installation to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 (Build 9.00.3042.0) as a 2 step process. First by upgrading MSDE to SQL Server 2005 (Build 9.00.1399.6) using SA Authentication which works successfully as mentioned earlier.

However, when I try and upgrade SQL Server 2005 (Build 9.00.1399.6) to SQL Server 2005 SP2 (Build 9.00.3042.0) using SA Authentication, I receive the same error as before:

"SQL Server Setup Cannot Upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server Credential. You must use Windows Authentication credential for the upgrade"

When I upgrade using Windows Authentication, the setup displays the following error:

"[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again"

The log file content for the error is:

The registry entries suggest that the version now is 9.00.3042.0. However, I am not sure if the upgrade was successful. I can connect to the database using the old SA user ID and password.

If anyone else has faced similar issues, please let me know the workaround for the same.

MSDE Upgrade To SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2

Sep 28, 2007

Hi,

I am planning an upgrade from MSDE to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 (Build 9.00.3042.0) for our 2000/2K3 Servers. The MSDE installation on our servers is a standalone installation (default instance) and uses Mixed Mode Authentication. When I execute the setup program for upgrade and choose SQL Server Authentication (and enter the corresponding SA user Id password), the setup program displays an error "SQL Server Setup cannot upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server Credential. You must use Windows Authentication credential for the upgrade". However, when I select Windows Authentication for the upgrade, the setup program displays an error €œ[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again€? (Error Code 15119).

I even tried changing the Authentication mode from Mixed Mode to Windows Authentication (by changing the LoginMode registry key value to 1) and running the upgrade using Windows Authentication, but I receive the same error.

1) Is the password policy for SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 different from MSDE or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (Initial Version), since upgrade from MSDE to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (Initial Version) worked successfully without any issues.
2) When I am using Windows Authentication for the upgrade, the installer does not prompt me for any password. What password is the installer validating against the password filter DLL? Is there a way to find it out? Also, is it possible to find out what was the reason for the password validation to fail?

I would really appreciate if I could get some answers to all the problems I am facing.

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,
Sahil Girotra
