Sql Server Agent Service Failure

Hi all,
I'm new to sql server administration so please show some understanding!
I installed sql server 2000 personal edition (upgrated to sp4) on an windows xp pro OS, but I cannot get the sql server agent service running. I get a message " the service did not start due to a logon failure". The server is my local pc, I'm using windows authentication and the login is "domain/loginname" where domain is my pc name.
Does it have to be installed on a server OS to have this service running?

The SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service on server started and then stopped. If i Manually start the services also SQL Server Agent services are stopping automatically.Though I selected Auto Restart SQL Server Agent if it stops unexpectedly, The services are stopping automatically.TCP/IP protocol was enabled for port 1433.Are there any setup I missed?

Hi all,
I do understand that it is highly recomended to have aserprate user (perfered a domain user account) for each of the SQL Server service and SQL Agent service.
What is the reason behind that? (Someone told me to not run the service with an account that has a powerul privilegs! - I don't undrstanmd this point can you explain it please?)
What is the diffrent between: 1- Local System account 2 -Network Service account

I have scheduled a job in SQL Server Agent, as it executes it fails Immediatly. The error history displays the following error details, which i copied from the log file
"Description: Unable to load the package as XML because of package does not have a valid XML format. A specific XML parser error will be posted.
The system cannot find the path specified.". This happens when loading a package and the file cannot be opened or loaded correctly into the XML document. This can be the result of either providing an incorrect file name was specified when calling LoadPackage or the XML file was specified and has an incorrect format. End Error ... The package could not be f... The step failed."
I am using the File System Type to load my package.
Please assisst me in finding the solution

Hi all.
Is there a difference with sql replication between sql server 2005 64bit and sql server 2005 32bit?
Both are on a Windows 2003 server. One is 32 bit and the other one is 64 bit.
The first time I set up sql replication (test environment), it was on a 32 bit sql server. This worked fine.
The second time I wanted to set up replication (live environment), it was on a 64 bit sql server. This didn't worked fine.
I can't call the sqlcesa30.dll file on the 64bit server with IIS. So I called the dll via a remote IIS server.
This worked but gave me the following error when calling the following URL:

After seeing this I looked up what ReadWriteDeleteMessageFile could mean. It appeared to be some NTFS acces problem. But when I checked the security settings, it all seemed to be ok.
Has anyone any idea what else to check? Or is sure that I must have done something wrong?

Hi All,
We seem to be being plagued by the error below by our SQL Server agent. This happens almost everytime we restart the server that has been running for a day or two.
Our SQL Server Agent uses a none expiring domain credential. I understand that this problem only happens when the profile being used by the SQL Servr Agent has changed (password change). What puzzles me is that the login is A ok and no changes has been made to it's password.
We always resolve this problem by changing the login used in the SQL Server Agent to local and after that, returning it back to it's original domain login. Unfortunately, we cant always do this everytime something goes wrong.
Can anyone please help us shed a light on this? We're using SQL2k with SP3a. Thanks!

Here is an odd one:
I switched my SQLSERVERAGENT service to use the Local System Account.
I stopped and restarted the service.
Both the Services window and Enterprise Manager show the SQL Server Agent is running. But when I try kicking off a job I get the following message:
Error 22022: SQLServerAgent is not currently running so it cannot be notified of this action.
Any clues as to why the agent could be running, but not know that it is running?

?Is it possible for my machine to have TWO DIFFERENT MS SQL Server Express installations? Is the problem real or some small ghost issue?

I have a Win 2003 server running 3 instances of SQL 2000 Enterprise.
The problem is I can only start 2 of the 3 Job Agents at a time, as the 3rd gets stuck in a starting state.
Has anyone struck this problem before?

What sort of things would it interact with to justify having this ticked as the sqlserver.exe seems to be consuming all the CPU constantly and some suggestions have said that having this ticked can cause a performance issue.

I am trying to upgrade my default instance from SQL Server 2000 Standard to SQL Server 2005 Standard. I get to the service authentication window and hit my first problem. On that window, there is a dropdown box where you should be able to choose the default instance service AND the SQL Server Agent service and set the authentication information for both of those services. That's the way it is in my test environment. However, on my production server, when I click that dropdown box, only the instance appears, and not the agent. Why?
I tried the upgrade this past weekend and ran into this problem. After researching it and not finding anything out about it online, I decided to just go forward anyway since I had lots of backups and copies of everything. The upgrade appeared to go ok, but the agent service wouldn't start. It gave the usual message when you try to start a service that doesn't have anything to do, like the Performance Logs and Alerts service. When I looked at the agent in SQL Server Management Studio, it had (Agent XPs Disabled) next to it. So I researched this and found how to enable it. For some people online, this allowed them to start the agent service, but of course that didn't work for me. Finally in my research online I found that some individuals had a lot of missing system tables in their MSDB and Master databases after the upgrade due to some of the SQL scripts that are part of the upgrade process not running properly. So I compared my system tables and SP's against another SQL 2005 instance I have, and sure enough, there appears to be a lot of missing tables. It was at that point I decided to just restore everything and try again later.
My point in writing that second paragraph is to ask if that was all due to the fact that the SQL Server Agent wasn't listed in the upgrade wizard like it should have been? Or maybe the fact that it wasn't in that dropdown box was evidence of a deeper problem? Is it likely that if I do whatever it is I need to do to make the agent appear in the upgrade wizard that my missing system tables and agent service not starting problems would probably not be an issue anymore? And why would the agent not be appearing in the upgrade wizard?

I have six stored procedures that I have to run hourly during the day. When I schedule them into separate SQL jobs (they must run concurrently), the percent CPU of Sqlagent90.exe process goes way up, eventually pegging out the overal CPU usage on the server. When I run the six stored procedures concurrently from query windows in SQL Server Management Sudio, the overall CPU usage stays very low.
Is there something about the SQL Server Agent that inherently adds CPU overheard? Thanks in advance ....

hi, can anyone explain, how to execute package with sql server agent:
the problem is::
i made a integration service package (in visual studio 2005). When I 'm in visual studio and do "execute" the package it works well. Then I build a dtsx file. When i double click on it, it opens and if i do execute, it works well.
I want to execute the package every week automatically. I write a job in SQL server agent, in Steps I choosed Type=SQL server Integration service packege, then General->packacge source -> file system, and then wrote where the dtsx file is (which was built). "Run as" I choose my user name.
then i'm trying to start a job, but it fails, and writes "The package execution failed."
What I'm doing wrong.

I have an issue on SQL Agent and wish you to advice:
Servers Environment:
The SQL Server and SQL Agent Service is installed on clustered Server1 where the Integration Services (IS) is installed on Server2. Deployment of SSIS packages have been done on Server1 and IS on Server2 is pointing to it.
Case:
1. In SQL Managament Studio, connection on Database Engine is up on Server1, connection on IS is up on Server2.
2. Execution of all packages via IS connection on Server2 is working well. No issue on running.
3. SQL Agent Job is created under Server1. The job failed on running. Message from the Log File Viewer:
"The job failed. The Job was invoked by User domainhost. The last step to run was step 1 (tewst)."

How to change the SQL Server Express or SQL Server Agent service account programatically using C# 2.0 ?
actually, I do know all the other methods like using SQL Server Configuration Manager in SQL Server 2005 or Manage My Computer dialoge. But I really need to do this using C# 2.0.
Why I need this?
I want to do this as a part of an installation procedure to make the user able to backup his database anywhere with any priveleges. And I dont wanna him to do this manually as he is not an expert at all or even a novice.
Can any one help on that ?

we recently had a failure which ended up wrecking my replication. The basic layout is from a source server -> Distribution Server then out to several other servers. Long story short the distribution database had to be moved to a new drive and I am now getting the following error message

Hi,
I am running transactional replication between a pair of SQL Server 2005 machines using a remote distributor. Occasionally the log reader agent fails with the error
"Replication-Replication Transaction-Log Reader Subsystem: agent * failed. The process could not execute 'sp_MSpub_adjust_identity' on '*'."
The agent starts back up again almost immediately on its own with seemingly no problems. I haven't been able to find any documentation on this error from Microsoft. Any ideas?
It is not a permissions issue as the log reader agent (and all of the other agents at that) are running under windows accounts with domain admin access for the domain that both the publisher and the distributor SQL Servers are on. (I know, I know, that's horrible. I've only been here a week and a half and I just found out about this today, so I didn't have anything to do with such a glaring security issue.) All of the SQL Servers involved with the replication are still granting sysadmin access to the windows administrators group.

I just tried to install the file:
D:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727InstallUtil.exe SQLAgent.exe by running it from a command prompt.
and got an error that the system could not find the file or one of its components. It is a farily new install. I do not think I've lost any files any time.
What is the problem?

I have a publisher, remote distributor and subscriber all running SS2000.
Under replication monitor on the distributor, under replication alerts i have enabled the "replication agent failure" alert.
All i need to know is should this alert trigger if the distribution agent that runs on the subscriber not the distributor fails?
I have add occurences of the distribution agent failing and the alert is not triggerred, is this because it only triggers for the agents that run on the distributor, ie: snapshot and log reader agents?

After upgrading a server from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005, I can't get any SQL Agent jobs to run, giving logon failed messages. MSSQLSERVER and SQLSERVERAGENT services are set up to run as the same domain account which has administrative rights to the server and is a SQL login with the sysadmin role. For basic testing purposes, I created a test job that all it does is run a T-SQL command 'SELECT @@VERSION'. The job is also set to run as the same account that the Agent is running under. I have a package from SQL Server 2008 R2, that loads data from .xlsx file to database table.There are total 15 columns and 14000 rows in the .xlsx. The package runs fine in BIDS. But the same package in SQL Agent fails with error "omponent "Excel Source" (1)" failed validation and returned validation status "VS_ISBROKEN".
When I tried to run the package by deleting the half of the records for first 7000 rows it ran successfully in agent. Then the second half (last 7000 rows) also succeed from agent job. So, there is no issue with the data/datatypes.The agent job is able to run with record upyo 11000 rows in .xlsx. When I am running for 12000 rows it is failing.Is there any problem with the number of records in .xlsx or size through SQL Agent?
I am running the package from a Proxy account in sql agent job.

Hi
Service Broker problem. I am getting :
DNS lookup failed with error: '11001(error not found)'.
when I select transmisson status from sys.transmission_queue on the initiating server.
I am setting up a service broker to connect 2 servers. I have used two different code samples - one to use windows auth, the other with certificates. Both give me the above error. I have connected to the sending and receiving instances with Profiler, with no luck - the receiving instance does not begin to react.
I have endpoints on instance 1 & 2 - ports 5040 and 5041. The route on instance 1 is to instance2 endpoint & service -
on the initiator, select * from sys.routes gives:
RouteToTargetServer 65539 1 TargetService NULL NULL TCP://TargetSSBEndPoint:5041 NULL
I think that there may be a ports issue (?) so I've checked the ports - telnet <machinename> 5040 which seems OK.
I have admin access on my machine - for test, I have 2 instances on the same PC.
any suggestions...

In an SSB test project created from the T-SQL batch in Stuart Padley's Weblog (subtitled "SQL Server 2005 stuff I couldn't find anywhere else", http://blogs.msdn.com/stuartpa/archive/2005/07/25/443229.aspx) I found strange inconsistencies with enquing messages between two databases on the same SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP-1 CTP March instance running under Windows Server 2003 SE SP-1:
Sending a simple message from the Initiator to the Target database with either the SendMessageProc stored procedure or its code as a batch fails for about 50% of all tries, with varying failure patters (up to 10 sequential attempts fail). Messages for failed tries remained in the transmission_queue, but didn't appear in the InitiatorQueue or TargetQueue.
I made the following changes to Stuart's code in the SendMessageProc procedure and my SendInitiatorToTarget.sql messaging script:
1. Split out EXEC SendMessageProc from Stage 4 and all of Stage 5 into a separate batch to enable sending multiple messages without recreating all objects.
2. Changed BEGIN DIALOG to BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION
3. Added a missing END CONVERSATION statement
A simple intradatabase service based on the "Hello World" DB Engine sample run in the Northwind or AdventureWorks database behaves as expected.
The partition with SQLS 2005 SP-1 also has SSX SP-1 with Advanced Services installed. Some minor problems occured when installing SSX SP-1, so I removed the original SSX instance and reinstalled SSX SP-1. See http://oakleafblog.blogspot.com/2006/03/sql-server-2005-sp1-ctp-available-for.html.
The same SSMS project runs fine on a fresh install of SQLS 2005 RTM under WS 2003 SP-1 on another machine partition. (This machine isn't running VS.) No messages fail to reach the Target database, as would be expected.
Has anyone else encountered similar anomalous behavior with SSB under SP-1 CTP? This problem ran me nuts for an entire day until I finally gave up and created a new SQLS 2005 RTM test instance.

I am a member of the Administrators group, and there is plenty of space in all hard drives, plus the temp directory is open for "everybody" to full-control it. Yet the Service Pack 2 database engine fails, all other components upgrade fine.

Whenever i change the SA password to anything else, my SQL Agent services
like jobs, alerts starts falling, and if i attempt to stop and then restart
sql agent service, it will not start again.
My server uses sql authentication for everything...
help...

Hello, I am having a problem with my sql server agent service not working. I have done some research from earlier postings and still having no luck with getting it up and running.
Problem:
"Could not start the SQLSEVERAGENT service on local computer. could be an internal Windows errow or service error.

2006-05-09 14:23:55 - ? [098] SQLServerAgent terminated (normally)
I have reset the password for the 'sa' account and running it and got error: Error 18456: login failed for user Specify a different account to be used.
But when I try it only provides me with the 'sa' account.
My primary goal is to run some DMP ion the databases that I have on the server.
Any help would be appreciated.
