Upgrade SQL 2005 Evaluation To Workgroup/Standard Without Uninstalling: Supported?

Hi, all. I see two conflicting notes about whether one can install the SQL Server 2005 Trial/Evaluation and then upgrade to Workgroup or Standard editions, without uninstalling the Evaluation edition.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx seems to say YES, you can upgrade to Workgroup/Standard from the Evaluation edition.
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx says NO, you can only upgrade to Enterprise edition from the Evaluation edition. For Workgroup and Standard, you must uninstall the Trial first.
I've been reading and looking over what to do for my situation for several days. I need to ask and see if I can get a clear answer.
My Scenario: I have a SQL Server 2005 Eval installed that is currently running with live data. I need to upgrade that to a recently-purchased full version. I have several databases set up. I have ready the article 914158 that states it will fail. It's still running so I can access everything. If I restart or stop the service I'm screwed.
I'd like to upgrade from my current SQL Server version: 09.00.3042 (Workgroup edition that comes with SBS upgrade) to the standard edition that I've just purchased. I've attempted to run setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1 from the command prompt and it just tells me that there's nothing new to install.
I don't really want to uninstall the current installation just to do something that shouldn't be complicated to do, upgrading software versions should not be a difficult process.
We have got the wrong version of SQL Server 2005 due to not having SSIS. We have loads of DTS packages running and I have tried to import them and its shows no SSIS service installed.
Is the route to upgrade straight forward? We have a couple of databases running on 2005 upgraded from 2000 but most still are active on 2000.
I would like to ask regarding sa performance difference between the two version of SQL 2005. Which is better the SQL 2005 workgroup or the standard edition..?
I have multiple development SQL Servers running Enterprise edition that I want to upgrade for application testing before upgrading our production system. All of the servers meet the hardware and software requirements for SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition. However, when I try to install to use the SQL Server 2005 Evaluation Edition to upgrade the servers in place, I get the blocked upgrade message: Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. Can the Evaluation Edition be used to upgrade these servers or do you need the full blown version?
First of all I am planning to install sql 2005 standard and sql standard sp2 on vista ultimate professional using vs 2008 pro I have some questions about installing sql 2005 what is the best way to install sql 2005 on vista My article I got this from ms 403393 (upgrading sql standard 2005 to sql standard 2005sp2) 1 sql standard .(shortcut right click from cd/dvd not possible) I have heard command prompt start menu, click cmd type run D: cd/dvd exe From a wizard (sql sp2)

f. on the instance page click default instance(default install) g. finish rest of wizard h. apply sql sp2
I also have of seperate question of upgrading sql from vista using a Configuring local admin account account (configuring administration from a wizard-will this notify me by default) I do not want my administrative priviledges elevated. I will be using default configurations for my installations......... I often wish there would a nice picture examples of doing this Please help
I just received my licensed disks for upgrading my SQL Server 2005 Evaluation version to a fully licensed version. Do I simply run the two disks over top of the evaluation version or is it a little bit more complicated? Any input would be greatly appreciated. A little new to SQL.
I have installed SBS 2003 Premium with Exchange 2003 SP1 and now I want to install SQL server 2005 workgroup edition.
Heres what I noticed during setup, following the steps of the Server 2005 Workgroup Edition instructions, starting with Upgrading the Sharepoint instance of WMSDE.
Preparing the http://companyweb website: Step 4. I should make a backup of the data directory within program filesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory. However there is no data-directory there, so nothing to backup there. This is probably the reason for all the rest of the issues, however what does it mean, why is there no such directory present? I checked before doing the sql install that by going to http://companyweb I did indeed land on the sharepoint internal website.
Rest goes all normal, until : Attaching the databasefiles to the new SHAREPOINT instance of SQL server 2005.
Step 4.: go to MSSQL$SHAREPOINTdata. Not only is there no such subdirectory now, the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory has in fact now disappeared. So steps 4 till 6 cannot be performed now.
Then further to Enable full text search in Windows Sharepoint services Step 2. Remark: I get the error message as described there, however the solution would be to start the SQL server (Shareoint service. However that service is up and running
Furthermore when I go to http://companyweb now, I also get the errormessage indicating no connection can be established with the configuration database.
When I check for services, I find that the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service has disappeared from the list of services.
I have clients that have the MSDE version installed and we need to upgrade there program to the MSSQL 2005. Is there an easy way to convert the data? Should or Could I uninstall MSDE and than install MSSQL2005 WorkGrp? Will there data be affected? Any tips would be appreciated.Thanks!
I'm try to upgrade SQL Server 2005 Evaluation with tuned up and worked merge replication.
- I'm insert disk with licensed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, start installation - in process, indicate instance for installing, in list of options appears I see option "ugrade" - All passes fine and go on:
After upgarde I'm get completely broken merge replication!
Moreover, such feeling that certain strange troubles with SQL Agent: all points context menu in Replication Monotor - disabled and if I try to start replication manually through jobs - too failed - with some error "agent shutdown" !
I'm try to build "clear" situation: install in Virtual PC Windows 2003 Ent SP1, SQL 2005 Eval and setup my test replication and upgrade SQL Server to Enterprise version - and get same trouble too!!!

Its a bit difficult to tell when I get bizzare "Product level is insufficient" error for even a basic derived column transformation when executing a package using SSIS unless it is executed using a scheduled job....
I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.
I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.
I'm installing SQL 2005 on a cluster. Currently we do not need the features of enterprise edition, but we may need them in the future. Can you upgrade Standard edition to Enterprise edition (on a cluster)?
Having some problems Upgrading from SQL Express 2005 SP2 to SQL 2005 Standard. I'm getting the following:

Pretty sure that I have to have SQL 2005 Std w/SP2 but I don't have a CD with it on. Is there a way that I can create one so that I can upgrade the SQL Instance In-Place.
I'm after some advice, I am looking for the best way to do this:
I have a SQL 2000 Clustered Virtual Instance which is of course Enterprise Edition as it is clustered. I need to upgrade to 2005, but dont need the 2005 Enterprise features, Standard will do, as this supports clustering.
The restrictions are that you cant upgrade 200Ent to 2005Std.
As this is a fairly complex environment, it has a default instance running on node 1 and a named instance running on node 2 I dont particularly want to uninstall both 2000 instances, and then install new 2005 instances
So is it possible to upgrade to 2005 ent, and then downgrade to standard. I have seen a suggestion without any details, that there is an undocumented sp, sp_update_resume, that might do this. Does anyone know about this
Or does anybody have any other suggestions. (the names of the instances have to be the same, as the existing instances)
I am hiring a server at a hosting company. This server contains a dozen websites that i made and they all have their own database. Well, i received a message from my hosting company that they go to remove the SQL 2000 Standard and replace it by SQL 2005 Express. What do I have to think about that? Can this give database connection problems?

Is it just a case of changing the registered licensing info? (I presume all the functionality for Standard exists in the Developer Edition) Or is it a reinstall job?
I want to use a dev license for development on the server, then once its finished, just leave it in place on the box and upgrade the licensing to standard edition. (The client doesn't yet have a Standard License, but does have a Dev License - and wants me to start right away!)
If its going to boil down to having to do a full re-installation then I should get a Standard license from the start, if its just a minor license key change, then I can use a Dev license straight away!
I tried to upgrade an Express edition 2005 to Standard Edition 2005. I did remember to use the command prompt setup parameter to allow the upgrade but still the option to upgrade is disabled. Can upgrade from express to standard?
I did run upgrade advisior to check the existed sql 2005 standard edition to upgrade to enterprise editon. I got the following error message:
SQL Server version: 09.00.1399 is not supported by this release of Upgrade Advisor

Just bought the SQL server 2005 standard edition software to replace the express edition that I have been running for the last 6 months.
The setup works fine until I ask it to install the management studio.
At this stage it seems to think that I have a newer version already installed and tells me that it won't upgrade it.
I then wend through the add/remove sotware function in control panel and removed everything to do with SQL server and tried again. The same thing happened.
A client of mine was using SQL Express and soon realised this doesn't meet his needs performance or database size wise. He also realised that SQL Server 2005 Workgroup came free with his R2 version of SBS.
So in essence, I have been trying to find the Microsoft recommended way to upgrade from Express to Workgroup. I have not been able to find a step-by-step guide and to add to my confusion, when I run the work-group installer it tells me to run the installer with a switch which I have gone ahead and done but when selecting components it has all of them defaulted to blanked out.
Surely the process for an in-place upgrade should not be so technical as I am finding it ? To my mind, the natural progression would be to upgrade express to a better capable version of 2005 and should be as easy as pie.
Anyway, I am basically looking for a step-by-step guide on how to upgrade to get it done right the first time as opposed to upgrading and than realised some remenants of Express are still larking about causing trouble.
