Disabling Hibernation Caused Laptop To Not Shut Down Completely

Dec 8, 2015

When I go to Start -> Power -> Shut down, it displays the "Shutting down..." window, then the screen goes black, but the laptop won't shut down completely. That is, the WiFi, Bluetooth and Power (light bulb) indicators are still on (and the battery indicator too if plugged), and I have to force (power button long press) the laptop to shut down. I can also shutdown the WiFi and Bluetooth devices using the keyboard at this stage (with FN button). And if I keep the laptop this way long enough (unplugged), my battery will be completely drained.

I recently disabled Hibernation (cmd admin -> powercfg/h off) so I suspected it to be the culprit. So I enabled hibernation again (cmd admin -> powercfg/h off) and my laptop was shutting down as it should. I then disabled hibernation again and the problem came back. I also figured it might be something to do with my power plan so I reset it (Power options -> Change plan settings -> Restore default settings for this plan),

Hibernation Occurring Too Fast On Laptop?

Aug 12, 2015

Issues regarding hibernation on laptop? Since upgrading to Windows 10 I've noticed that my laptop seems to be going into hibernation much more quickly than it did in Windows 7. I checked my settings and my screen saver settings and so on are setup to those recommended by HP but these do not seem to be having an impact on hibernation. What's particularly frustrating is that even when it's plugged in if you have a long download/install/update you must keep the machine active by moving the mouse or be active on the keyboard or it will go into hibernation mode very quickly (under 5 minutes).

Unusual 3 Minute Hibernation On HP Laptop

Aug 14, 2015

I have an HP DV7 laptop that I upgraded from Win 7 Home to Win 10 Home. After the upgrade I noted that once my laptop goes into hibernation 1 time and you bring it out of hibernation, the laptop then ignores the power settings and immediately goes back into hibernation after 3 minutes of inactivity. As long as you're moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard you're OK but if your totally inactive then in 3 minutes the machine will go into hibernation. Note also that this does this even when the laptop is directly connected to a power source and not running directly on the batteries.

Gaming :: Laptop Completely Freezes While Playing Games

Sep 3, 2015

after installing windows 10 (clean install) my laptop completely freezes, so far happend only while playing games. This is possibly related to nvidia gpu, because basicaly nothing else uses it. I dont get any error or bsod and nothing in the event log, it just hangs with the "bzzz" sound and i have to restart.

Games a tried playing are heroes of the storm and rocket league, got freezes playing both. Time it takes to freeze is random sometimes 10minutes and sometimes 3 hours.

Heres some HW info [URL].....

Laptop Completely Unresponsive And Freeze Up Seemingly After Being Idle?

Aug 15, 2015

I've just upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I have an HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC. This happened twice: when I left my laptop and came back after an hour or so, the screen was black (as usually), but the laptop was completely unresponsive. I couldn't wake it up neither by moving/clicking my mouse nor by hitting any key on the keyboard (both external and embedded mice/keyboards). Furthermore, the LED of my laptop on/off h/w switch button was constantly on, instead of blinking.

Laptop Unable To Shut Down Properly

Aug 13, 2015

I have a HP Pavilion 15 laptop that I bought in January this year. I had no problems with this laptop at all until I updated to Windows 10 and still don't for the most part.

When I attempt to shut down, hibernate or sleep my machine it goes to a black screen with the power still on, meaning I hold the power button down myself to switch it off (which is not good for it) or wait until it runs out of battery (also not ideal).

Desktop AND Laptop Restarting On Shut Down

Aug 18, 2015

Since I've upgraded to windows 10 a couple weeks ago, I've come to notice in the last couple days that when I press shut down from the start menu, typing shutdown -s -t 0, etc. it does not completely shut down the computer. It starts to go through the process, it says it's shutting down, monitors turn off, but the power light stays on and it just restarts. I have only gotten it to shut down correctly about 85% of the time through the login screen and pressing and holding the power button (which I know I should refrain from). I am completely up to date on windows. I have not made any hardware changes since my upgrade to 10.

This issue has also now come up on my Lenovo G50 laptop. Same shtick, says it's shutting down but ends up restarting, never shutting down completely. I also have since reverted to Windows 7 on my desktop and have no issues. I have unchecked the hybrid shutdown box on my laptop.

Drivers/Hardware :: Laptop Won't Shut Down Properly

Aug 25, 2015

I'm running Windows 10 Home on an ASUS Q551LN 2-in-1 laptop which originally came with Windows 8.1.

When I shut down/restart/sleep the machine, it does not shut down - the Hark Disk activity light is still blinking and the normal power button press does not work. If I do nothing, it remains in this state for hours. I need to press the power button for 5 seconds to reset it. Only then I can start the laptop.

This happens around half the times. The other half it works normally. I never had this problem with the OEM 8.1 on this machine.

Based on other threads - I have the latest Windows 10 updates, and disabling fast boot did not solve the problem.

BSOD :: Caused By Video / Audio?

Dec 13, 2015

I have a BSOD issue that only tends to happen when I'm playing a video. This happened quite frequently when watching youtube videos before the upgrade from 8, but after the upgrade it has slowed down some and wasn't really bothering me. Here lately I have been using an emulator to play FFVIII and periodically it will BSOD which is very annoying because sometimes you can go hours before seeing a save point. When attempting to debug the crash dump files it just tells me that I do not have the correct symbols. I'm not an idiot by any means, but there aren't a ton of useful documents out there that walk you through getting the correct symbols. Every driver is as up to date as possible including the mobo and bios.

Update Has Caused Overheating / Constant Fan And Freezes

Nov 27, 2015

I updated to Windows 10 using the direct method (downloading the file from Microsoft's site rather than waiting for the update in my bottom right corner). Since I've updated, my computer has begun to drastically overheat; the simplest things such as unplugging and walking around with it will cause it to stutter and freeze for sometimes up to 5 minutes straight.

The computer model is an HP Pavilion g6.

Installation :: Clean Install Crashes Caused By Many Reasons

Jan 28, 2016

I bought a new tablet and recently I decided change Windows 10 from English to my own language (Finnish). I have done clean install on my other computers (desktop, laptop and 8 inch tablet) with no any problem.

Here some basic details from the tablet:

Teclast X98 Plus Intel Cherry Trail T3 Z8300 Window10 Tablet PC IPS 2048x1536 4GB RAM 64GB eMMC WiFi HDMI

(Intel Atom X5-Z8300) 64bit Quad Core 1.84GHz

So, I made Usb installation media from MS by using choice "Use settings for this computer". Then I started the installation from the usb. I formatted the C: drive and installation continued untill "preparing files for installation" at 74% crashed "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". I started the process many times but allways there are some error like mentioned or "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" or something else. The best achievement was 94% but never 100.

As I mentioned, I have done clean installation many many times with other computers, even removed all the restore drivers. I know Windows creates new ones. Never before I have had no situation like this. Is that some device fault?

Automatic Update Caused (Start Menu Isn't Working)

Mar 24, 2016

Yesterday morning after booting my computer, I experience the "your start menu isn't working" bug.  I contacted Microsoft support and they still do not have a fix for this well-known failure. I checked my Update History and saw that an automatic update had been installed. Restoring from my last restore point resolved the problem.  The culprit was "Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3140741)".

Installation :: Clean Install Caused Repair Loop Error

May 30, 2015

Win 7 user here, wanting to dual boot with Windows 10 preview (on a different partition).

So I made a Win 10 usb boot disc, and it installed it fine. Played around with the new Windows for a few mins, whilst it downloaded an update, and after installing the update, it said it needs to restart, naturally. So I did.

However, since then, the PC keeps restarting, showing a Windows 10 logo, and below that is the text, "preparing automatic repair". Then it just resets, and goes in this endless loop.

Why is this happening, and how do I resolve it?

Updates :: Last Update Caused All Custom File Associations To Reset To Defaults

Feb 10, 2016

My PC updated Windows 10 yesterday afternoon ("Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)". After rebooting, it completely screwed all my custom file associations (mostly for media files: photos, audio, and video).

A few minutes after the reboot, the Action Center started firing popups at me, one after the other, every few seconds:

"An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV."

with a different file extension for each popup (avi, bmp, mp4, and so on) . Even .pdf files were changed from Adobe Reader to Microsoft Edge. As well, all my custom context menu items for these same file types were also deleted. I spent a lot of time setting these associations up and now they were all obliterated. I'd backed them all up in a .reg file but running it didn't do anything. So with a heavy (and angry) sigh I started manually changing the associations back to the way I had them. However, each time I finished making a change within seconds the Action Center would fire the same message as before at me for the file type I'd just changed and it would be reset back to the MS default again.

Finally in exasperation, I just used System Restore to go back before the updates and that solved the problem. Now, the Action Center keeps nagging me to set a time to reinstall this same update. I know I can't block it indefinitely, and there are probably important security patches in it I should have. So the question is: How can I stop it from f'ing up my file associations again?

BSOD :: Kernel Security Check Failure Consistently Caused By Photoshop?

Dec 24, 2015

So I'm working on a brand new Dell laptop, and I've been working with Adobe Illustrator & Bridge CS6 and Photoshop CC almost every day for the last week and a bit (got it December 12th, 2015). Everything's been fine up until yesterday, when the BSOD hit me suddenly while trying to save a file in Photoshop. Since that initial crash I can't even have Photoshop open for more than a few moments without the same thing happening. Each time it's a Kernel Security Check Failure.

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic, I ran chkdsk, updated my drivers, did a full system virus scan in McAfee, and even tried uninstalling all Adobe programs, running Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, and reinstalling from scratch. The moment I get Photoshop up and running again the same thing happens.

Take a look at my minidump files and let me know what might be causing the problem. Photoshop is essential for some important work I'm trying to get through by the end of the year

Minidump files here: SALVATRON-TX-55-2015-12-24__11808_88.zip
