Does Upgrading Change Internal Drives Besides C Drive

Aug 4, 2015

Almost all of the data I care about is on my other internal drives. Should I bother backing up my other drives, or does upgrading them leave them alone?

Drivers/Hardware :: Internal Drives Not Showing After Reinstall

Feb 10, 2016

I've done a reinstall of Windows 10 today. I unplugged my internal storage HDD's to isolate the SSD for the install, wiped the SSD, and reinstalled 10.

Now it's installed, I've plugged my 2 internal HDD's back in, started up Windows, and neither drives are showing. Neither in device manager or in Explorer. What could be the issue here, and how do I resolve it?

Drivers/Hardware :: Change Internal SATA Disk

Sep 26, 2015

I just spent a long time trying to find the best answer for this and wanted to save people some time... this is specifically for Windows 10.(So, the answer is basically here: URL...Add a new "Multi String Value" called "TreatAsInternalPort" to HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE SYSTEM Current Control SetService sstorahciParametersDevice with the values "0|1|2|3|4|5|" (the | symbolizes a new line)(I had to reboot two (2) times before the changes took.)

I had to do this fix because BitLocker has different options specifically for fixed, local, internal drives as opposed to a USB drive or eSATA drive which is removable. Also, this gets rid of the "Eject" option in Windows 10 for mislabeled internal HDDs.This is what it looks like when storing the values into "TreatAsInternalPort":

Internal Hard Drive Missing

Apr 2, 2016

Updated from win 7 64 bit to win 10 home edition around a month ago. Yesterday AM while editing pictures in photoshop lightroom my wireless mouse and keyboard quit responding. I have all pictures and editing software on my internal D drive (2terabyte) and my C drive is a 128gb solid state. Aftr pulling out and reinserting my wireless mouse and keyboard plug in on the tower and trying the control alt delete command which did nothing I turned off power at the tower. Upon reboot ( left for work because it was taking too long ) and upon return it was behaving ok until I realized my D drive was not reading in my hierarchy. Rebooted normally which took over an hour. Shut it down and unplugged it for an hour. Restarted same results no D drive. rebooted agn ((20 min or so boot time) this time in safe mode and still no D drive.

How To Install On New Internal Hard Drive

Mar 2, 2016

My original Seagate 2TB hard drive crapped out on my HP Pavilion 500-424 PC. I bought a new 2TB hard drive along with a Windows 10 disc to install. The sales guy said it would be like installing a normal program from CD, just put it in and follow the prompts. Trouble is I keep getting a no OS message, boot device not found, hard disc 3FO. Apparently I'm missing something big here. Any way installing Windows 10 on a blank internal hard disc ?

Installation :: Upgrading Through WU With 2 Drives

Jul 18, 2015

Ok, I know when doing a clean install or 1st time installation to disconnect the 2nd internal drive.

I have been testing Win10 on my laptop that only has one drive, but my desktop has an SSD OS drive and a 2TB spinner for the Libraries , File History and Macrium Reflect images. I have only started using 2 drives(before this I had never done it) at the end of last year and never had to upgrade or reinstall Win 8.1 update.

Question: When I run the upgrade to Win10, through Windows Update(whenever it comes down to me), Do I/Should I disconnect the 2nd internal(and redirect everything after), or can I just leave it connected, with no ill effects?

Swap Drive Letters Between Two Bootable Drives

Aug 19, 2015

I upgraded my PC from W8.1 to W10, all went very smooth. I then worked on upgrading a laptop SSD drive to from W8.1 to W10 which I planned to then install in my wife's laptop. It was easier for me to upgrade the drive on my PC then swap the drives than take her laptop for awhile. Well...that created my problem. I had 2 drive C's on my PC.

I was able to boot quite a few times between the drives (swapping the primary drive in BIOS). But then W10 "fixed" my drives, and now I have only one C drive (the SSD laptop drive) and my original C drive is now F. My PC now only boots to the SSD C drive and I'm not able to use Disk Mgmt to swap the letters. Disconnecting the SSD drive stops the PC from booting because the original C drive is F.

How to either swap the drive letters or remove the SSD drive and somehow be able to rename the F drive to C.

Networking :: Cannot Mount Network Drives - Drive Letters Not Available

Sep 19, 2015

I have some harddrives on a "server" computer in my home-network running win 7. From my "client" running windows 10 I am mounting these drives using

psexec server -u username -p password -d net share F=F: /GRANT:user,Full /GRANT:media,read 2>nul
net use F: serverF

Today my client crashed and I had to remove the graphics card. Since then I cannot enter my network drives anymore, the commands seem to run, but when I try accessing the drives I get a message indicating I should put a media into these drives. Also, I cannot mount them manually using "map network drive" since the drive letters are not available.

I tried removing them from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMMountedDevices (they are listed there as "DosDevicesF" etc.), but once I restart, they are there (in the registry) again.

how I could fix this? Win10 somehow seems to remember that thes drives once have been there before and keeps blocking the drive letters...

Cannot See External Drives - No Drive Letters Showing In Explorer?

Aug 15, 2015

My new windows 10 only sees my PC - when searching for my files in Explorer, it cannot 'see' my two external drives when I plug them in. I've looked in Device Manager and they are not showing in there either. How can I tell Win 10 to access my external drives?

I thought Win 10 would automatically spot my external drivers the moment I plugged them in? Then it would go search for and install the appropriate drivers - but it isn't doing that..

Can't Create Recovery Drive - No Eligible Drives To Do Backup

Jul 29, 2015

So I've completed the upgrade from 8.1 pro to Windows 10 pro. I want to do a clean install so I went to control panel to create a recovery drive. After clicking next through the first screen it appears to search for eligible drives to backup to (I'm just assuming here, and I do have a 32GB USB drive plugged in), then just gives up and says it can't do it. No explanation of what went wrong. So I guess no clean install for me..

Upgrading On Different Hard Drive

Jul 28, 2015

So, I currently have Windows 7 installed in a standard HDD and I bought an SSD a while ago with intentions of reinstalling windows on it. With the Windows 10 update coming in tomorrow, I was wondering if I could install the Windows 10 update on the SSD. Even if it's just installing it on the current HDD I have and then doing a clean install on an SSD. Point is, I want to know if there is any way I can have Windows 10 running on my SSD after tomorrow.

Drivers/Hardware :: Can't Access DVD Drive After Upgrading

Oct 20, 2015

My DVD drive worked fine in Win7, and still works fine if I boot from it, but since upgrading to Win10 I can't access any disk in it. File Explorer "sees" my G drive, but when I want to look at a disk it tells me to insert a disk. Device manager told me that my drive was a virtual clone drive, so I removed it and deleted the driver, and now I don't see any optical drives. I can't find the model number of the LG drive, so I can't download a suitable driver.

Installation :: Change Drive At Clean Install

Nov 17, 2015

I currently have an ASUS motherboard (p9x79 Pro) and am running my operating system on a spinning drive and using the ASUS cache which uses a 128GB SSD drive to cache the operating system disk.I would like to dump that arrangement and run the operating system on a larger SSD drive (they are cheaper now). Ideally I would do this at the same time as moving to Windows 10 so that I only have to install once.

My question is - if I go for a clean install to Windows 10 can I put this directly onto a new clean SSD drive - using my old windows 7 key to activate it (it was an OEM key I bought when I built the system) or will I need to clone the Windows 7 system onto the new drive before installing? The motherboard will not be changed.

Installation :: Want To Change Which Drive Windows Is Located On

Jul 29, 2015

I'm sitting on my windows 7 here, ready to upgrade to windows 10 with the "Get Windows" app.

One complication though is that I'm running on an old harddrive. One of those simple SATA disks.

I got my hands on a new SSD disk which I would prefer to have windows on.

So, How could I in the simplest way get windows 10 and have it installed on my new SSD?

Should I upgrade to windows 10 to begin with?
