The File Or Directory Is Corrupted And Unreadable - Seagate Backup

Aug 15, 2015

I just moved from 64 bit Windows 7 to 10 so I backed everything on my 4TB Seagate Backup Plus external drive. I also have Carbonite so all is not lost if it comes to that. I made a base Image using Macrium Reflect that I still would like to get back though.

Anyway the drive was working fine until I remotely (from my chair downstairs) was doing things on my PC. I occasionally take over my computer remotely if I'm watching tv and remember I need to do something. So I was in the process of moving files from the Backup Plus to Windows 10 that's when the drive locked up. I went upstairs and got on my computer and found out Windows 10 was now not recognizing the Backup Plus. Rebooting didn't work so I shut the drive off overnight and plugged it back in today but now get "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".

Disk Management shows ok and I ran Seagate's SeaTools for Windows in "Short Drive Self Test" mode and it also shows 'Pass".

I tried Recuva and a scan showed a lot of files but I'm not exactly sure how to use this... I set option to scan for undeleted files. I then made a folder on my C drive desktop to dump everything but then it says "These file names are too long to be recovered to the selected destination (634). Do you want to change the destination folder." Anyway so where is it wanting me to put everything?

What are the steps (and software) I should be doing to (1) recover my files and (2) what I need to do to use the Backup Plus drive again.

Drivers/Hardware :: Moving AVI Files To External Drive / Drive Not Recognized And Lost All

Apr 14, 2016

I was moving video files (AVI) from an external backup drive (WD Element) to another external backup drive (Seagate expansion) after having moved another video file from my laptop (Acer) to that Seagate external drive. The night before I had moved some video files from the WD to the Seagate with no problem but using a different laptop (Sony). These video files are all rather large and I can tell that the space is still being allocated on the Seagate because while the folder cannot be seen the space that was there is still being used by the Seagate because I am missing over 100GB which would be about the size of that now missing folder.

What happened was there was a message that the Seagate drive could not be recognized while the files were in the process of being moved to that drive from the WD. This is after I had already moved a video file of about 26GB with no problem into that now missing folder. When I saw the message I attempted several times to move files to that Seagate drive but I could not so I unplugged the Seagate drive from that laptop (Acer) then reinserted it into the usb port. I got a repair message that said it needed to be repaired because some files were corrupted and that no data would be lost but the drive would be unavailable during the repairs so I checked ok. It took only about 30 seconds and it said the repairs were completed and the drive was available but I noticed that the folder that I was moving the video files to was not gone.

As I stated there are more than 100GB of files in that folder some are video and others are audio recordings that were created by using the myrecording (audio and video) features of the Acer laptop and they are very important so I need to figure out if they can be retrieved from that Seagate drive. I have not copied anything else onto that Seagate drive but I have plugged it into the Acer computer to ensure it is being recognized. Both the external drives WD and Seagate are plug and play that are powered from the usb -- they have no power adapters.

Drivers/Hardware :: External Hard Drive Off And On

Dec 21, 2015

In the past few days my external hard drive makes the sound (windows notification) like when I unplug it from my desktop. Then about 5 seconds later I get another sound and notification asking me how I would like to view content for G: (my external hard drive). I only have it attached to use for backups and I've checked my back up program (easeus) and my backups haven't been happening either. I used crystaldisk to check it and it's healthy. Why it would be essentially shutting itself off and on?

Drivers/Hardware :: Cannot Format External Hard Drive

Sep 26, 2015

When I plug my external into my pc it tells me it's unable to use and to format the drive. So I try to do so, and Windows tells me that there's a program using the external drive.I attempt to format anyway since I know there's no programs using the drive, and after a minute the formatting comes to a stop and I get a message saying it's unable to format. I've tried formatting it via 'This PC' and DIsk Management in Windows 10. Tried Quick Format as well and nothing is progressing.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Partition 1TB External Hard Drive

Feb 10, 2016

I purchased a 1TB hard drive to place media files on it so that I could plug it into my DVD player which has a USB port. I made sure to format the hard drive to Fat32. What I can surmise is that the 1TB hard drive is too big for the DVD player to read. I plug it in and it says Device Not Supported. But I've successfully plugged in an external card reader and used a 16GB SD card to place files on and it reads them fine. So I'm thinking it's the size of the drive that is the issue.

I might have to partition the hard drive into two partitions. One partition 16gb and then the other partition with whatever is left. They did say they were not sure if there was a way to set it up so the 16gb Partition is what is recognized first when plugged into the DVD player. This way I would transfer movies I want to watch to the 16 GB partition, and transfer them over.

Now when I search hard disk partitions in Windows 10 the manager comes up and I can see the hard drive, but I can not change the size to partition it. It's grayed out. Is there a freeware program that works with Windows 10 that will split the hard drive into two partitions in sizes I specify, and make sure that the 16GB partition is the first one loaded or seen? And if I set it up that way when I plug it into my computer will the computer see both partitions?

Drivers/Hardware :: External Hard Drive Is Inaccessible

Oct 24, 2015

I have a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk 2TB USB 3.0 external hard drive that I use to store (majority) videos and documents. A few days ago it started giving me this error for every folder and file, and eventually just from trying to access the hard drive itself from This PC:

And this is what shows up in Device Manager:

In Disk Management, this is what shows up at first (first image) and then when I refresh Disk Management through Action > Refresh (second image):

As for specifications wise, I clean installed to Windows 10 Pro N x64 (a day after this error came up when I plugged in the hard drive, actually... Not sure what I was thinking at the time) with what I think are updated drivers for my hardware from the manufacturer's websites. Previously, it was a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro x64 after upgrading from Windows 8.1 Pro x64.

Not sure if this is worth mentioning, but, all my folders and files show up when the computer actually can read the hard drive, I just can't open any of them. I've never had to deal with hardware problems before. I really don't want to lose the files in that hard drive, as I'm not able to make a backup even if it was working (with it being my biggest external to date).

This is what the hard drive shows on Speccy at a glance:

(Is the serial number and firmware version supposed to be the same on all hard drives? )

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Get Update To Recognize External Drive

Dec 12, 2015

Early on in the Windows 10 update process, I was able to upgrade an HP Stream 7 and a Stream 11 to Windows 10. Both had the same 32GB RAM and nominal 32GB eMMC as the Stream 14 I am wrestling with. Both came to a point where they told me the device had insufficient space on its C: drive. In both instances I selected an external Micro SD drive, and off it went with the upgrade.

In this instance I cannot get past that point. I select the external drive (a 320GB external USB spinner) but it doesn't accept that or any other external device I offer it.

When I click "Refresh" it says that it needs 10GB on C: drive, and eventually says that the upgrade failed.

The computer has been wiped, and reset to factory spec for W8.1 with all updates installed. It has ~20GB on C, and 7GB in another partition, so even if I find a way to remove the partition it wont be enough.

I'm about to have to give up on this thing and just make the poor user run with W8.1 until further notice, how to get past this point.

Drivers/Hardware :: USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Disconnects After A Few Minutes?

Feb 10, 2016

I connect my USB 3.0 external hard drive to my laptop and it works but after a few minutes of not using it the disk stops spinning and when I to use it again my computer locks up and after 30-60 seconds it disconnects and reconnects some times. Else I have to pull it out. If I use the drive without a to long pause in between it work perfectly fine but as soon as the drive stop spinning and has to spin up that is where it happened. that feature in the power options turn on where the power to usb does not turn off.

I will look to see it I can change the hard drive shutdown time in properties.

Drivers/Hardware :: External Hard Drive Disappears After Restart

Sep 15, 2015

Basically i lost everything on my external HDD & the only way to get the drive working again was to format it, That fixed the problem the drive was having (Unknown why data got lost) but if i disconnect the drive & reconnect i get message (the drive is inaccessible & corrupted) Something like that cant remember the wording exactly as its not happening right now, but i know the problem will come back & i will once again lose all my data, as its happened 5 times over 2 week period..

If i restart the PC, after startup its the only drive that's not visible either in (This PC), (Disk Management) or in (Device Manager) which leaves me with no option but to disconnect & reconnect the drive in order for it to be visible & Accessible, Now sometimes it works fine but once it becomes inaccessible it stays that way unless i format it Losing all data once again ...

Relevant Information of Drive

3 Years old
On 24/7 (As i never turn PC Off)
Its a Iomega eGo 1Tb External HDD

I Used software Hard Disk Sentinel & it says the drive is Healthy & in good working Condition

Drivers/Hardware :: Upgraded Computer - External Hard Drive Won't Open Now

Feb 23, 2016

I upgraded my windows 7 computer to windows 10. I have an external hard drive that I am unable to open. When I connect it to the computer now, a reformatting window pops up asking to do this. Obviously, I don't want to delete the data on there as I used this drive as my backup. How can I go about opening this drive?

I checked on someone's else computer running windows 7 and my data is there, but my friend upgraded his computer to windows 10 and now I can't transfer data that way.

The hard drive is a WD Scorpio, model WD25000BEVS. Don't know if that is useful. I am wondering if part of the issue is that I have this harddrive is from a previous laptop that ran windows vista. That computer failed bcs it was a subpar HP product. I literally baked the motherboard several times for it to work. I finally gave up and got a new computer but kept the drive. I should have reformated it but I only deleted everything but the user folder.

I am wondering if part of the issue is ownership of the drive. I know that when I first used this drive I had it take ownership of the hard drive. I know this can be done in window 10, but I can't seem to ever open properties of the harddrive while its plugged in.

Window Old Directory In C Drive

Oct 24, 2015

After upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 using the free upgrade program from MS, the old windows 7 installation has been moved a folder call Windows.old. I am not sure if this is for reverting back to Windows 7 in case Windows 10 installation fails or for some other reason.

However, this is folder is hogging a very large disk space ( around 36 GB) on my C: drive. Is there anyway we can remove this without affecting the current Windows 10 installation? Or it needs to be there to refer to some old data?

Note: After upgrade my Windows 10 installation was not very stable, hence I have done a clean installation of Windows 10 on my system.

Drivers Corrupted After Driver Booster Install - Cannot Detect Second HDD

Jan 22, 2016

My drivers failed to install correctly, my computer black-screened during the install of them when I was using Driver Booster. Now my PC isn't detecting my second HDD. It is in BIOS, but not in Device Manager. It is not showing up in all utilities, even if I show hidden ones. The stupid program didn't create a backup and I can't tell for sure what drivers it has broken.

I think some were Human Interface Devices, Universal Serial Bus Controllers, some SATA controllers and some others, can't tell. It also isn't showing up where you format and partition drives, windows just straight up can't detect that it is connected. I have tried Windows Repair, didn't work. I can't find any info, I don't have a way to roll-back. Will resetting my PC even work? Now I can't access my main drive, how can I reset these basic drivers without being able to rollback? I have seen some mention of uninstalling drivers such as...

"I had similar problem with my added disk drive when I upgraded. I had to go to device manager IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and delete all ATA channels, back out and restart. Let Windows find all ATA devices and there were both my disk drives.."

But I am not certain whether it is safe to uninstall that driver or others. All my files are on that drive. My PC now cant detect my on-board SSD too and it cannot detect my CD-ROM too. Would resetting my BIOS reset the those base drivers?
