Installation :: Surface Pro2 - Stuck With Locked Disk After Upgrade

Sep 20, 2015

Current situation: MS SP2 that does not boot, and the ssd is not formattable because it seems locked (same lock as when you hibernate the pc)

I tried to upgrade from W8.1 to W10 with the upgrade tool in Win8 on a MS Surface Pro 2.

The computer hangs on 56% so I reboot. It tells me "the installation is failed, so go back to win 8". I accepted.

From there it showing infinitly "Restoring previous windows version".(It shown in dutch, so maybe it a bit different in English.

It is in this state for a month now and I tried everything listed below.

I tried creating a Win 10 disk, and do a fresh install from there. Result: Cant get the drive to boot

Tried creating a Win 8 disk. It boots, but it won't let me format my C-drive. It seems to be locked because it failed the recovery to the old Win8 install. I can remove all the partitions, but it gives an error when I try to install on a newly created partition. After a reboot, all partitions are back.

I tried booting to command prompt with windows 8 usb disk and remove the partitions with diskpart. It failes the format command. "attri disk" does not show read only

I tried an ubuntu live disk. It does not show my NTFS partitions

So the problem is: I can not access my data, but I accepted it is lost (and I copied some things via command prompt)I cannot get into windows. It wont let me install windowsI cannot format my harddrive. I can not remove the harddrive because I cant open the tablet without breaking it.

One of the things I thought is to make a USB with win10 running on it, but most of my flash drives are to slow and booting from a Sandisk extreme 32gb seems impossible.

Installation :: Attempting To Upgrade - Windows Keeps Restarting Back To Windows 8

Aug 2, 2015

I have attempted to download windows 10 around 4/5 times, the download completes and states that my computer needs to restart upon which it claims it is configuring the windows 10 upgrade. I would assume from this point it would restart into the windows 10 configuration however each time I have tried it it restarts back into windows 8 as if nothing had happened.

My laptop then opens up windows update and says I am able to download windows 10. This is really frustrating as I can't even seem to get into the windows 10 setup.

As you can see I am attempting to download again but there is no trace at all of it attempting to install windows other than this failed update that you can see here.

I am using an HP Pavillion 15-n268a laptop.

Bitlocker External Drives Locked By Windows?

Nov 17, 2015

This morning I tried to login to my windows machine, windows 10 pro, intel i5 3.30ghz, 12gb RAM, 2TB HD. and kept telling me password was incorrect. I then removed windows password thru other admin user, and now all external hd's except for c: drive all lecked by bitlocker. Never installed or activated it.

I have 2 internal sata drives and 2 usb drives locked. I have gone to control panel, bitlocker, and tried to unlock drives, tried to do a search for key id on pc and nothing is found. My raw files are in the backup drives.

Installation :: How To Upgrade Windows From 32 Bit To 64 Bit

Jul 5, 2015

When I downloaded Windows 8 Pro a few years ago my PC only had 1GB of RAM, so it installed the 32 Bit version. I have since added another GB of RAM. When Windows 10 is released, will I be able to download and install the 64 Bit version, or am I stuck with the 32 Bit version on this PC?

Installation :: Partition Locked - Tried To Install X64 (bootmgr Missing)

Oct 6, 2015

As IE11 was malfunctioning, and my GT610 driver doesn't seem to work properly in Win10 32 bit, I attempted to upgrade to Win 10 x64 on my machine (Dual core, 64 bit ready, 4GB ram), and whilst doing so I think I've deleted the C: boot partition. I had partitioned the C drive and put the data in F: drive partition before hand so I didn't lose all my data.

When rebooting, I got the message "bootmgr is missing", so tried to boot from a Win 10 32bit iso DVD. I can get the DVD to launch, and tried to go through a repair, but got the message that the drive/partition was locked. I can't repair it, or boot. I also tried fixing it using Minitool Partition Wizard, which shows the partition without a label and as "unformatted". wasn't sure whether I should format the partition or not.

what I can do, to unlock the drive (from command prompt?) and then reinstall or repair Win 10.

Can I keep the F: partition with the data on it whilst doing an install of the x64 bit windows, or will I have to reformat the whole disk because of the different architecture?

Installation :: Upgrade From Windows 8 Fails?

Sep 8, 2015

I've successfully updated to Windows 10 on my two Surfaces, but there is some kind of issue on my desktop PC. The upgrade process from Windows 8 fails at about 71% total (Installing features and drivers at 91%), and the error I get is:

C1900101-40017 Windows Update ran into a problem.

When I click on "Get help with this error" I'm directed to a page with some general troubleshooting with Windows Update. I've run Windows update repair tool and it fixed some issues, but the installation failed again.

I have now tried freeing up more disk space which I admit was a bit tight and I'm preparing to run the update again. Still, I'd prefer if there was a more detailed error message or a log file where I could see what exactly went wrong, but there are no indications where I might find one (either in the error message, the troubleshooter, or Google). As it is, I'm shooting blind here and this will now be my fifth upgrade attempt.

Installation :: Upgrade Install Failure Over Windows 8.1

Sep 18, 2015

I've run the free Windows 10 upgrade twice on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Both times, Windows 10 would download. As my system restarted the install would take place and system finishes restarting. However, upon hitting the splash screen, I was back to Windows 8.1. Not sure why the install is failing. Each time, I receive a failure in the Windows Update popup. Did not have this problem on my desktop going from Windows 7 to 10.

Installation :: Windows 7 OEM - Upgrade Then Clean Install Dual Boot

Sep 3, 2015

OK, I have Windows 7 OEM Version and want to upgrade to Windows 10 After I get Windows 10 Activated through the upgrade can I...

Clean install Windows 7 (with Original 7 key) and clean install Windows 10 (should automatically activate) to have a dual boot? Or is Microsoft going to block my activation saying you can't have both 7 and 10?

I have a different computer that has a OEM-Builders edition of Windows 7. I don't want Windows 10 on it right now as the software I need to run will not run on it but...

I want to upgrade to Windows 10 just to get the free upgrade and activate then revert back to Windows 7.

Later on down the road a year or so can I install Windows 10 with no problems activating it?

Installation :: Upgrade Now Button Opening Windows Update Page?

Apr 14, 2016

I'm currently running Windows 7 Pro on a Lenovo ThinkPad.

I have the Get Windows 10 icon showing. When I click it, it takes me to the Upgrade Now button. So far so good.

When I click the Upgrade Now button, I get the starting to download screen with the circle dots. After a few seconds, it then takes me to the Windows 7 'Windows Update' page in the control panel, where it says that 'windows is up to date'. And that's it.

How to get Windows 10 to upgrade? I've done other laptops without issue.

Taskbar Seems To Be Locked

Feb 22, 2016

I am having some serious problems with my taskbar... it seems to be locked but i have checked it over and over and it isnt... i have seen hundreds of posts similar to this but no fixes that worked... i tried the powershell command... tried safe boot... tried to use an older image but that didn't work... either...

Also I got super scared when my prefered cleaning software (IObit uninstaller) said "power scan leftovers of Search" as if it had uninstalled my search bar... my pc is about 1.5 years old now and i can't find my windows installation disk anywhere... my brother has a windows 10 disc that came with his rig but i dont want to use it incase it locks him out saying his version is pirated... i am willing to buy a new OS disk if i need to but i MUST retain my files... i recently got able to live 9 and used the key so if i need to reinstall it I'm not sure if i will have to get a new one

NTFS Hibernation Locked Up?

Oct 13, 2015

I'm experiencing problems with Windows 10 trying to load. I'm unable to get past the login screen. It seems that Win is locked up on me and appears unresponsive. Trying to type my password at login screen, it just seems to sit there. After a few mins some characters appear in the password field with much delay. After all of this, I have attempted to load a live Linux distro to grab files/data off the drive to start backing up the OS and reinstall. When I went to do this, I get an error message in Linux "error mounting sdb1..... Windows is hibernated, refused to mount... Operation not permitted......" How do I get Windows 10 to load

Locked File Access

Feb 10, 2016

I recently decided to move my archived video and photo files, from a small (250GB) drive to a larger (500GB) drive as the smaller one is maxed out. However when I tried to move them, I got an error message "You need permission from 'Doug' to access this file" (or similar). In review of the source files, I see the majority of them have a padlock icon in front of them. I checked the parent file and I ('Doug') am the owner of the entire drive, all folders and all files, with total control and permissions over all of them. Yet I cannot move them, open them, rename them, or in any way utilize these archived files.

I did not ask for any encryption on the drive (which is also open for sharing with 'everyone') I have been using this drive since many previous OS setups, and other computers, since Vista, and never had problems accessing them before. I see in looking at the target drive, that all files that did not have the padlock, were moved to the new drive. I am thinking that these files may be encrypted with the old EFS(?) security, but not sure as I have never used it, at least not deliberately, but if I did it would have been under the same owner name, and passwords. I am hoping by this time in the tech evolution, that there is a workaround as some of these files are digitized 30-40 year old videos and photos, with no originals left, so I need to get these back. I am talking thousands of files!
