Installation :: Upgrade Fails - Second Boot Error On Migrate Data

The error that comes up is "0x80070004 - 0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation."

I have removed all 3rd party antivirus, and a bunch of other fixes. A

Installation :: Upgrade From Win 7 Fails With No Error

Jul 30, 2015

I have been trying to upgrade 7pro for a day or so with no luck. First of all I tried the 'get windows 10 app' this tells me a update (KB2952664) is not installed. It was showing as failed in my update long but has since installed ok. However the app still says its missing. So I tried the media creation tool. This starts up fine but about 40 min in this screen appears

I press ok and after about 10 seconds the installer just closes, and that's it we are back to normal. I have tried this 3 times and I get the same result.

Recovery Drive Boot Fails With Missing Boot Configuration Data

Feb 2, 2016

When I try to boot from a recovery flash drive, it fails with: EFIMicrosoftBootBCD error status: 0xc000000f and message: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

The recovery flash drive was created on a Lenovo ideapad originally with Windows 8, now upgraded to Windows 10, latest upgrades applied. Checked the box for copying system files. Target drive was a 16GB DataTraveler flash drive formatted as FAT32. Creation ran to completion with no errors. When booting normally, Windows 10 runs fine with no issues. I tried re-creating the recovery drive with the same results.

I created a repair disk and tried to use bootrec to fix the issue, but I suspect it did nothing or fixed the c: drive. I ran boot rec while in the root directory on the flash drive.

Updates :: Upgrade From Windows 8.1 Fails With Error Code 80070005

Aug 14, 2015

I received notification that my Windows 10 reservation is now ready. After downloading and preparing to install through Windows Update, I receive a failure notice with error code 80070005.

I am currently on Windows 8.1 Pro x64. I have administrative privileges.

For several months, I've had an ongoing issue when I run 'sfc /scannow', corrupt files are found, some of which it cannot be repaired. From the CBS.log file, I found these related to "utc.app.json". I was assured that when Microsoft sent out update for DiagTracking (KB3022345), it causes a false positive for file corruption.

Also worth noting is that I currently have my boot SSD partitioned and configured to dual boot Windows 8.1 Pro and Linux. This all works fine, and I've been told this shouldn't be a problem for upgrading to Windows 10.

I would like to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, not a clean install, so that I keep all of my software and settings as they are.

Installation :: Upgrade From Windows 8 Fails?

Sep 8, 2015

I've successfully updated to Windows 10 on my two Surfaces, but there is some kind of issue on my desktop PC. The upgrade process from Windows 8 fails at about 71% total (Installing features and drivers at 91%), and the error I get is:

C1900101-40017 Windows Update ran into a problem.

When I click on "Get help with this error" I'm directed to a page with some general troubleshooting with Windows Update. I've run Windows update repair tool and it fixed some issues, but the installation failed again.

I have now tried freeing up more disk space which I admit was a bit tight and I'm preparing to run the update again. Still, I'd prefer if there was a more detailed error message or a log file where I could see what exactly went wrong, but there are no indications where I might find one (either in the error message, the troubleshooter, or Google). As it is, I'm shooting blind here and this will now be my fifth upgrade attempt.

Installation :: Upgrade Stops At 24% Fails With 0xc0000f

Aug 2, 2015

Upgrade of Win7 HP laptop -- not usual failure code. Upgrade done through Windows Update (copy was reserved). Gets to 24%, restarts, bring up Recovery screen, fails with 0xc0000f -- a required device isn't connected.

Only one physical drive in the laptop -- works fine under Win7.

Have seen threads about problems with System Reserved being too small for Win10 (200MB for Win7 vs. 450MB for Win8). Tried shrinking C: and resizing System Reserved.

Repeats above problems -- plus, leaves laptop in weird mode with Win10 partially installed, a new Recovery partition, and nothing working (meaning, Win7 won't boot anymore).

Am now trying option of installing from DVD, after merging boot stuff into C: partition and removing System Reserved -- figuring that if Win10 requires a System Reserved partition, it knows how to create one the right size.

Installation :: Upgrade From 8.1 Fails At Copying Files (23%)

Jul 30, 2015

I tried updating my Win8.1 to Win10 twice.

The first time, it hung at 26% total, 89% copying files. Then it bricked my system completely so I made a clean install of Windows 8.1. There was nothing else installed than Windows & Updates.

Tried to update it with a stick made by the Media Creation Tool --> Stuck at 23%, 77% copying files.

I tried everything: Disabled Network Adapter, pulled all Cables (only mouse left) out, I also detached my second HDD.

I am trying to install Win10 on my SSD (Samsung 830 Pro, 130GB). I am running a Z77 Chipset.

I'd love to install completely new with the Image but that doesn't work because of the activation later on..

I'm stuck with a fresh Windows 8.1 install now, that's not really what I wanted. I'd love to update to 10 since I had it as a Insider too.

Installation :: How To Migrate Files Without Upsetting OneDrive

Jun 14, 2015

I have circa 200 GB of files fully synced with OneDrive. I have a number of PCs all signed into my OneDrive account. They are all set to use all files offline, so any change on one PC automatically propagates throughout the others. This setup works well for me.

I want to buy a new PC when Win 10 is released next month. It is critical for me that I will be able to access all my files as soon as the PC is built and ready. I therefore need to copy all my files to that PC.

The 'easy but slow' option is to set up windows on the new PC, sign in to OneDrive and wait for the files to sync over the internet. The problem is that with the volume of files I have, this will take a week + on my internet connection. That is just not reasonable.

I would much prefer to copy all the files to an external HD and transfer them locally. This would be much faster and exactly how I would have done this pre-cloud storage.

But, if I do this and copy the files locally, will OneDrive get confused and upload the copied files and effectively result in me having two copies of everything?

I really don't want to mess this up. On the one-hand, if I wait for the files to sync over the internet I am unable to use my new PC fully for a week. On the other, if I make a local copy, I am worried that I will make a huge mess of my OneDrive files.

So the short question is - how do I copy across a large volume of files locally without upsetting OneDrive?

Installation :: Upgrade Path From Dual Boot Back To Single Boot

Sep 24, 2015

My laptop has dual boot - Windows 7 and Windows 10. My Win7 environment is my main working environment with lots of programs installed and important files. I installed the Win10 environment just to play around with 10 during the technical preview. Now, I would like to disable the 10 environment and upgrade the 7 to 10. Am I able to do this, or have I already "used up" my one upgrade on this computer's Windows license?

I notice that in Windows 7 I have not received the icon in the notification area that invites me to upgrade to 10. This makes me think I might have used up my chance to upgrade.

My end goal is to have a single Windows 10 environment. Note that the reason I want to upgrade my 7 environment to 10 is because I don't want to have to re-install all of my programs and files into the current 10 environment.

Installation :: Can't Migrate Windows To A Smaller Drive Without Losing Files

Nov 20, 2015

I have Windows 10 on a 2TB HDD with about 1TB of the HDD full. I would like to migrate Windows to an 80GB SSD but I can't find anyway to do this without cloning the entire drive, which I can't do because there is too much content on the HDD. Is there any way to migrate Windows to a different drive whilst keeping all user files and installed applications on the old drive so I can have two drives in my system, the SSD for boot and the HDD for storage and applications.

Installation :: MBR Error 1 On Cold Boot

Jan 7, 2016

I recently upgraded a Toshiba A300 laptop (2009 model) from Win7 to Win10. I use a 125GB Kingston SSD as primary and a 280GB Hitachi as a secondary internal hard disk, in place of DVD drive, inside a cradle. This is a single OS installation, no dual boot. When I cold boot (from power on) and after the Bios logo, the "MBR Error 1" appears on screen and stops booting. To bypass I do a warm restart (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and the second (warm) boot loads Win 10. Also booting is ok from a Restart. Again error message appears only after a cold boot.

As a teaser I have to mention that, whenever I remove the cradle with the secondary Hitachi hard disk, the error does not appear during cold boot !!!. That is the error message appears only if the second hard disk is installed. This is an annoying situation only and does not affect any other operation, except booting.

Installation :: Can't Boot - Error 0xc000000f

Oct 18, 2015

Yesterday I removed dual booting Linux and after that my Windows 10 won't boot up. I have tried everything. The cmd commands: bootrec /FixMbr; bootrec /FixBoot; bootrec /RebuildBcd; Bcdboot commands and everything. Then I tried Refreshing PC what says: Drive where Windows is installed is locked. Please unlock it.....

Startup repair just scans for a short period and then says: Couldn't fix the problem. I can't Access normal Recovery options, so I'm using a recovery flash drive. I have tried several Live CDs but none of them won't fix the problem. I can access the UEFI Bios, but idk what to change there. I don't want to fresh install Windows, unless it's the only option, because it contains important data.

Installation :: Fail To Boot - Error 0xc0000359

Aug 12, 2015

I upgraded ok with the update and successfully activated windows 10. I downloaded both 32bit and 64bit to usb using media creation tool as I wanted to clean install Windows 10 64bit on my 64bit compatible machine although am currently running 32bit windows 7 as that's what I had to hand when I built the PC. If I attempt to boot 32bit from usb it returns the error winload.efi missing. If I attempt to boot the 64bit version it just returns to windows boot manager.

Frustrated, I opted for the "reset this PC" function in settings instead as an alternative to the clean install and the reset failed, hung, then returned to the screen "what would you like to do". Once I selected "turn off PC" and it restarted and automatically continued the reset only to fail a second time. This time I choose to "return to windows 10" but it just hung. I had to rollback to windows 7 with repair dvd.

With windows 7 now installed again, I still cannot boot from either the 32 or 64 bit option in windows boot manager when I select to boot from the USB.It either returns to the boot manager or returns the winload.efi missing error.I have tried changing settings in bios to disable secure boot and fast boot but it makes no difference. I've read the Andre da Costa (sp?) wiki steps along with countless other how-to-clean-install windows 10 guides.
