Networking :: Workstation Hangs At Applying User Settings

Dec 18, 2015

My name is Peter, and I'm IT Administrator at Junior High School. One month ago I installed Windows 10 Education on all computers. Everything was fine until today. Today users changed his passwords. Now, when user try to login to the PC, system hangs at "Applying User Settings". The only solution (not the best) is to remove user profile from workstation, but after next password change, problem returns. Active Directory looks fine, Previously installed Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 has worked without this issue. Maybe some one knows the solution or perhaps steps to diagnose it.

P.S. Windows version is 10586.29, Active Directory is based on Windows Server 2012.

Networking :: WiFi Drops Out And Can't Reconnect - Computer Hangs On Shutdown / Restart

Jan 7, 2016

I installed W10. This problem appears to be random and happens a couple of time a month. It is really annoying. What happens is, the WiFi appears to stop working. It can't find any available networks and won't reconnect no matter what I do. I have even tried closing/restarting explorer but that does nothing.

If I try to shut-down or restart my computer, it just hangs on the shut-down/restart screen. I have to hold down the power button to get my computer to shut-down. The weird thing is, after a restart, it works fine ...for a few weeks. It just seems very strange.

I use a WiFi dongle. I have a couple of them so I tried each one - they all eventually give me the same result . I have a HP if that works.

Accounts :: Keyboard Settings Not Carried Over To New User Account

Jan 14, 2016

I am running a laptop with a French keyboard layout, with Windows set on British English. For my admin account this works fine - there is an English and French input method available in the language settings in Control Panel (and I can even switch to an English keyboard layout, if I want, with the language settings 'button' in the righthand side of the task bar).

I would like to set up a user account for my son, which I have done, but it opens up with an English keyboard layout. I go into the language settings, but only the English keyboard is available as an input method. I add the French keyboard, but I cannot switch to this keyboard - there is no language button in the task bar and windows+space doesn't do anything.

I've even tried deleting the English keyboard layout to leave just the French. The language settings now show only the French keyboard, but Windows still stubbornly insists on staying with the English layout! What do I have to do to get the User Account to work with the French keyboard?

(User) Still There But Default Settings / Files Missing When Login?

Feb 20, 2016

I have an Acer (Intel Pentium Windows 10, 64-bit) computer which I bought a few months ago, and created one 'user' (my name - say John) Suddenly this week when I logged in (as John) the only items on the desktop were the default programs installed with the computer; all my files were gone. When opening the browser, or windows media player, all my custom settings were gone and it was as if the programs were being used for the first time. The default program used to open files (e.g. the original program instead of windows media player) had all reverted also. The start button was/is also not working.

I then discovered my files are still there and accessible - to do so I have to right-click on one of the programmes on desktop and 'open file location' then I can use the left column to (through windows explorer) get to C drive then 'Users' then 'John' and I can access everything that way. Also, the keyboard settings have bizarrely changed ie shift + 2 gives the @ sign instead of quotation mark.I have Norton which suggests no virus involved.I didn't have system restore activated. When computer starts it says press DEL to enter setup but nothing happens when I press it.is there anyway to fix this without doing a reset?

Performance :: Applying Backup Without OS Running

Jan 15, 2016

addressing in order to not lose my data. To give a bit of background, my laptop has 2 internal hard drives, 1 is my main/primary drive which I used for day to day operation and the other was just a backup drive which has a system image of my system.

My main drive failed, and after many horrifying clicking, scratching and high pitch squeals coming from the drive, I can only assume it has failed mechanically and isn't some kind of virus. So now I'm currently left with only my internal backup drive with a system image on it.

I was hoping to use this backup drive as my new primary drive, however I want to keep the files on the backup drive. I checked with my Hirens Boot CD and saw that my backup drive contains everything my other hard drive had, including the operating system contained within the Windows backup folder.

Normally for this I would install windows on another hard drive and then restore my files with the system image. However my laptop doesn't have a system restore disc or a copy of windows, it instead came with partitions on the hard drive which requires erasing my backup and consequently losing all my data.

I finally ask the question, is it possible to use the files currently stored on the backup drive without having to resort to buying a new hard drive to copy the files across and then partitioning my backup drive?

Drivers/Hardware :: PC Not Booting After Applying Thermal Paste

Dec 28, 2015

My heatsink was very Dusty. So today I removed it, cleaned it and reapplied thermal paste after cleaning the top of processor. I did pull the leaver to clean but I didn't remove processor.

I accidentally broke one of the lock pin while placing the heatsink. But still other pins are holding it perfectly. I also plugged the fan connector currently.

After doing all this my pc is not booting I can hear the fans running and there is the green light, but there is no orange light which used to blink before. Is there any power supply problem and if there is then how to solve it?

I did use Winrar to extract the iTunes .exe file to a folder and there I got the appleaplicationsupport.exe that I needed to install. But when trying to install it, this error pops:

That translates as "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid.".

I don't know what to do about it, nothing that I found on Google seems to work either.

Networking :: Computer Not Visible To One Other User?

Feb 10, 2016

I have 3 computers on my home network, two are Windows 10 desktops, one is Windows 7 laptop. I'll call them 10-1, 10-2, and 7.

10-1 can see 10-2 and 7.

7 can see 10-1 and 10-2.

10-2 can see 7 but CANNOT see 10-1.

All are Ethernet connected to the same router.

New observation: As an experiment I turned off discovery and restarted 10-1. It is still visible to the Windows 7 laptop and sharing is the same. It seems like the settings in the network and sharing center have no relationship with what is really going on.

Networking :: Changes User Rights On Folders?

Sep 27, 2015

I am running a multiboot W7-pro and W10-pro with several harddisks build in the computer to discover that after W10 used a disk W7 wants to check it to find no errors. Beside that I am not allowed to delete some folders I created in W7 after using them in W10 and they are set to free for use for everybody.

W7 now askes me to get permission from that everybody. I think they mean the W10-everybody. Understand that security is important nowadays but this is becoming a disaster! Also discovered that running the backupapplication Cobian (that always did a perfect job in W7) now is not allowd to acces lots of files in W7 anymore after W10 did ?????something??????.

Another example: I have two SATA backup 1 Tb Disks I switch every few weeks. W10 refused to see the new one after the first switch. Had to go deep into settings to carefully trying to open its content again as W10 told me zero bytes were used. In the end the 900 Gb data was there again but I have forgotten all the steps needed to fix it.

My best guess is that beside Microsoft is messing around with accounts and rights to get full control of your computer. They do not want you to be in control yourself anymore and you have to (must) only use W10 in the future. I am starting to feel a big fool that upgraded to W10 as I am loosing control over my PC's and home-network day by day!!!!

Networking :: Connecting To A Shared Printer As A User

Nov 29, 2015

I have two Windows 10 Pro x64 machines - say, A and B - connected into a home network. Both machines have two interactive user accounts registered on them: Admin (member of Administrators) and Bob (member of Users). On both machines user names are exactly the same and account passwords are exactly the same.I don't use HomeGroup file sharing, all sharing is set up using accounts and passwords. Everything works fine with folder sharing.

Now I would like to share a printer. The printer is connected to machine A. I enable sharing for that device and give it share name HP. I also go to the printer security settings and enable everything for Administrators and Users. Now I go to machine B. First, I log in as Admin. I go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and perform the regular procedure of adding a network printer. At some point I have to enter the name of the printer, so I enter AHP. Without asking for any credentials Windows successfully connects to the remote printer, installs drivers, prints the test page etc. The remote printer appears in Devices and Printers. Everything works as it should.

Then I log out from Admin and log in as Bob on the very same machine B. The first thing that I notice is that for Bob the new printer does not exist in Devices and Printers. This is probably OK, since access to shared network resources depends on per-user credentials.

So, I attempt to "install" this printer for Bob as well. I repeat the same procedure from scratch. this time as Bob: go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and perform the regular procedure of adding a network printer. Again, at some point I have to enter the name of the printer, so I enter AHP. However, Windows suddenly asks me for credentials to connect to the printer. If I enter Bob's user name and password, Windows refuses connect to the printer, claiming that Bob does not have permission to access it. End of story.

Note that I can work around this problem: I can enter Admin's user name and password when installing the printer for Bob and ask Windows to remember these credentials. Everything will work fine after that, which means that Bob will access that printer as Admin.I don't want to give Bob credentials of Admin to access the network printer. I want Bob to access that printer under Bob's credentials. It works perfectly fine for file sharing. How come it doesn't work for printer sharing?

Networking :: Homegroup Settings - Where Are Details Stored

Mar 5, 2016

I have a network of small computers for different purposes some Win 7 some Win 10. In upgrading my older Win 7 machines I made a few mistakes and have wiped a number of them. These older machines were all connecting to a homegroup for interchange of files.

Now they are on Win 10 the homegroup settings are rubbish. To remove them from the current list f homegroups computers requires you to log them on and leave the homegroup. This is obviously not possible. There was in the initial release of Win 10 a method, by right clicking a machine, to be offered a drop down which included the option to remove the computer from the homegroup. Unfortunately this never worked.

What I am looking for is the location of the storage where these older computers are recorded so I can try to remove them manually. Is it in the Registry?

Networking :: Speed Router Settings Not Visible Or Accessible

Nov 5, 2015

I have an ASUS 2 speed router - it worked fine in Win 7, allowing me to target the 5.2 MHz stream toward my TV for streaming, and use the 2.5 MHz speed for the computers, tablets & phones.

Well, I lost my motherboard, and purchased a CPU with Windows 10. I cannot tell what the router is doing - Windows 10 seems to think I do not require this information, and will not allow me to even SEE the router settings, let alone change them. The stream to the TV seems fine - the CPU internet is slow.

Anyway - how I can access the router settings!

Networking :: Treat All Future Networks As Public Settings

Oct 3, 2015

In Windows 7/8 there was a setting, a small checkbox "Treat all future networks as public and don't ask me again".

You can see it in this picture - [URL] .....

In my version of Windows 10, I don't appear to have that option. I could try deleting this registry key ...

HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlNetworkNetworkLocationWizard
Delete the key: HideWizard

Perhaps there's a simpler way than export, delete key, if wrong result import saved registry file. Have I missed a setting somewhere to set the network location?

Networking :: WiFi Priority Over Ethernet - Saving Settings

Oct 30, 2015

I have a kind of big problem with 10 Pro. My problem was "ok" in 8/8.1 Pro. As title says, I would like to give WiFi priority over ethernet. Why ? You may ask, I'm using laptop as a hyper-v machine ( prepare migrations from 2003/2008 to 2012 and others IT Admin things ). I know where to change priority but Settings aren't saved. Even after setting WiFi on top of ladder, after going to the settings again it's 3'rd. That way I have no internet connection because of my VM Networks and their DNS settings.

Networking :: WiFi Settings Tab And Tray Icon Missing?

Feb 10, 2016

It was working day before yesterday.

The Tray icon only shows the network/Ethernet adapter; the wifi icon is missing. Normally I'd click on the wifi icon to connect to wifi networks; that option is not available. Instead I get "Not Connected - No Connections Available." (If I plug in an Ethernet cable, that message goes away. But I need wifi!)

I head into the "Settings" app, choose "Network & Internet", and the topmost tab is "Airplane Mode"; the "Wifi" tab is missing from the Settings app.

I head into the control panel, network and internet, network connections, change adapter settings, and my Wi-Fi adapter is there, enabled, and full green signal strength.

"Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235"

Disabled it and reenabled, didn't work. Rebooting (twice) didn't work. Full power reset (press-hand-hold power button for 5 seconds) and restart didn't work.

Ran network troubleshooter, it says there may be an issue with the wifi adapter's device driver; it tried to fix it but failed. So I manually updated the device driver in the Properties dialog; that seemed to actually install a new driver (based on how long it took) but it didn't work.

I wonder if there was a recent auto-update for this device that's causing a problem? Or is there some way behind the scenes to hook up this device (who's driver seems to be working) with the windows 10 app (which isn't recognizing it)?
