I recently installed 10 on 2 laptops. Desktop tiles were missing in both. Instead of the expected win 10 start button, my start corner shops the familiar 8 icon. I have tried for days to find a solution online, with zero success.
View 4 RepliesIn upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 all seemed to be working but then the desktop manager starting looping flashing as it tries to install the tiles . Cannot get out of the loop. Have tried restarting but the process repeats - after a number of hours the flashes became less frequent but continue to be about 2 flashes then a pause until it restarts multiple quick flashes . It is reporting windows problems and trying to find a fix I presume but after a week of flashes it continues to be stuck. Can get to the task manager but cannot get into safe mode.
View 1 RepliesWanted to know if there is any way that you can place live tiles on the desktop. To me having to click start to view quick glance information is kinda' pointless and not a good way to be productive.
Using the Tablet mode on a PC doesn't cut it for me because of all the drawbacks (will not mention them here).
Let us Pin Interactive Tiles to desktop.
1. I would like to see a simple lightweight OneNote to replaces my "Sticky Note (not sure why the sticky note widget is in my task bar)". This would just be for simple tasks and due date but it should fully sync with calendar and onenote. Google Keep and Wunderlist UI is perfect for this kind of thing.
2. Calendar (month/week/agenda view) I would like to see my next appointments and make them without having to open the app.
3. Desktop gadgets windows 7 are what a lot of people are asking for.
4. Third party uses for widgets/interactive tiles: Spotify Playlist, Inputing food on My Fitness Pal, Weather, RSS Feeds/feedly (News)
Tiles to me are kind of useless because the whole point is to not open the app at all.
Any way at all to have live tiles be on the desktop instead of in start menu? I don't undertand why MS tucked the live tiles into start menu? If they are afraid that it would interfere with desktop icons, then they should make live tiles be dockable or make it so that a live tile and desktop icon cannot occupy the same space on the desktop. Terrible idea to tuck live tiles into start menu!! The whole idea of live tiles is so you can see it live!!! Is it just me alone on this?

View 2 Repliesfinally got windows 10 home update on my desktop and when I setup my family members my setup screen was not the same as theirs I was not able to resize my home page app windows or get the tiles to show up on the same screen with my account & apps so I removed the tiles.
View 1 RepliesThe tiles I've put on the start page for various apps (all resized to small) and arranged in groups are rearranging themselves randomly and resizing to medium each time I reboot. I can't find any reason for this. Also, is it possible to start more than one app at a time using the tiles? I've tried searching here and using Google but nothing at all comes up.. It's a clean install after upgrading.

It took a while but I finally was able to install Windows 10. My question now is, is there is a way to change the desktop icon fonts (name, size, bold, italic)? I right clicked on the desktop but couldn't find anything about fonts.
View 1 RepliesI've seen lots of people posting about this all over the internet but as of yet not found a clear fix to my problem. I registered for the upgrade a while ago and the 'check' said that my system was fine. It's a HP TouchSmart 520 and is 2 to 3 years old.Today I got the message saying that I could do the upgrade and all seemed to go well, no errors throughout the installation. However, as soon as one of the users logs on the desktop just flashes and you can't access anything other than ctrl-alt-del and the task manager.
I've tried booting into safe mode and trying a windows update (boots in safe mode with no flashing) but it finds nothing, and I've looked on the HP website to see if there is a W10 driver. It gives you a file to download which should check for drivers but that doesn't run in safe mode so a non-starter. And if I use the HP website it basically says that you need to use the windows update; which just sits there doing nothing.
If I go into device manager and try to do an update it says that the graphics driver is up to date. I am a bit hacked off that the HP website suggests that it's a product that's not been tested with W10, but the Microsoft check said all ok.
a few days ago I installed Windows 10 from Windows 7. All was OK, so far. I have an Adobe file in my desktop. But the icon showed is always black (no thumbnail) since Windows 10. (see image attached) So I clean both icon and thumbnail caches, and increase the Max Icons Cache for Explorer to 4096.
But without success. After rebooting Windows 10 the right thumbnail is shown, but after few minutes the thumnail is black again.I use a Laptop COMPAQ CQ58, 32-Bit Windows 10 Pro, 4GB RAM
I upgraded to Win 10 from Win 7 yesterday. I now have a translucent rectangle on the upper left corner of my screen. It's a lighter shade than the background color of the desktop. Can't move or remove it & don't know what caused it but it is distracting as it also appears on screen when running an app. How did you fix?

View 3 RepliesHaving upgraded to Windows 10 I am now unable to use my computer at all as when attempts to upload the desktop it continually fails to do so, the main desktop image is loaded but as it attempts to then add the icons it goes blank for a moment and then attempts the same procedure again. This occurs about every 2 to 3 seconds. On some occasions it displays the icons momentarily but often not at all. The mouse can be moved around the screen but I am unable to do anything further with it as the blue 'wait' circle is continually displayed.The odd thing howvever is that I left themChine running overnight in the hope that it would stabilise but when I returned to it Norton was requesting an upgrade whilst the problem persisted. This box was totally functional and i was able to proceed with it, which enabled the PC to then receive updates and reboot, with the same problem however. I am now forced to switch the machine off via the power button as I cannot shut down normally.

With Win10 , the desktop appears automatically on start up and also if you close an app. This always needs an extra keystroke to get back to the start screen.
Is there any way of automatically bypassing or switching off the desktop?
Also, was able to edit the tile legend in Win8.1. Not been able to find any way of doing this in Win10. The text on tiles associated with web sites often give no clue as to what you are opening.
Win 10 Tech Demo. I would like to have plain black text on my desktop icons. I have un-ticked the appropriate box to remove the subject drop shadows, but it did not remove them. I have checked the appropriate registry setting which is set to "0".
When I boot into Win 10, the icon font at first appears black but then the desktop "re-draws" and the drop shadows appear.
I have "Classic Shell" installed to give me the standard Windows 7 type Start Menu - could this be relevant?
I just upgraded to W10 from W8.1 and have lost my desktop short cuts and files. How do I recover them. During the upgrade process it said all files were transferred properly. I have looked at windows.old, but don't know what to look for or how to recover them from that file.
View 9 RepliesSo I've recently bought an SSD Drive soley for the purpose of running Windows. The original Hard Drive was a 2TB Samsung drive that I have since formatted and using for Storage only. Installed Windows 10 on the SSD and the machine is working great, boots up in aound 10 seconds from turning the machine on.
Now heres my issue. For some reason if i turn my PC on and do nothing it will show the message no operating system found press ctrl, alt + del to restart. This is because its still looking to my original 2TB Drive to boot up. So basically I have to tap F something everytime i turn my machine on and select the SSD from the list.
Here is where things get weird. I have gone into the bios and have the choice of what the machine boots up with, so again i can select my SSD. The problem is the section where I can set the boot order default is only showing my 2TB Hard drive and the Blu-Ray drive, the SSD doesnt appear in that list. So it appears in one time boot options but not in the boot priority list so I cant set it as the default Drive.
Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. The Installation went ok but when it got to the desktop my screen kept blipping or stalling out, my icons at the bottom of my screen and on the desktop kept disappearing and reappearing, my ICloud is giving me some weird message about how I don't have the privileges to access the folder...oh, and I cant click on an of my folders either...Anywhere between 5 min to 25 min is how long it takes for my computer to finally Stabilize itself and then everything works fine....It seems like it is taking longer to Stabilize...My computer is fairly new...I bought it in June of 2014...It is an HP Envy 23 All in One.
