Repaired PC Got Drive Letter Changed From F To C And Can't Revert

Sep 5, 2015

After the store where I bought my pc from repaired my pc (seems like it was a drivers issue) it came back with disk F (the ssd) renamed to C, so now all my shortcuts on the favourites say this:

It's pretty annoying, I cant call them on a Saturday about the issue. I know they tried booting up with an external disk and that's why it's renamed, but I can't rename it back to F, I've tried it and it gives me an error because the disk is in use I think, I've also tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free and the optiong to change disk letter disappears when I click on the one I need changed..

Drivers/Hardware :: Any Way To Reserve Drive Letter?

Dec 23, 2015

I have a situation where I need drives F and G available for scheduled file backups, and I like to play a game which involves mounting an ISO as a virtual drive, which would normally become F. Earlier today, I discovered a way to keep F and G available by creating to small ISOs and putting shortcuts to them in the startup folder. Then at backup time, I can just unmount drives F and G and plug in the flash drives. That seems to work fine, but since it seems a bit awkward to create ISOs just for that purpose, I was wondering whether there might be another way.

Drivers/Hardware :: Cannot Assign A Drive Letter

Nov 1, 2015

I have an external drive where the electronics of the case has failed. I have switched the drive into my pc so that I can use it as an internal drive. The drive is still operational but I cannot see it listed in my drives. Opening up disk manager shows the drive is clearly visible there but is no volume letters assigned to it. The easy option would be to delete the partitions and create new. However, the drive is divided into several partitions which I want to keep as they contain a lot of important data files (years of photos for one thing). Disk manager wont allow me to assign any drive letters (option is grayed out) and disk partition only shows me a single partition not the 5 partitions I have on the drive. how do I assign volume letters without losing my data?

Installation :: Fixed Drive Letter Designations After Dual Boot Install?

Jun 17, 2015

I've installed W10 in my laptop in a dual boot configuration with W7 successfully. I used this tutorial Windows 10 - Dual Boot with Windows 7 or Windows 8 I'm setting up to do the same thing in my desktop and have a couple questions about drive letter designation after doing it. I created a 30G partition on the C drive of my desktop for the W10 install.

My laptop has one drive, the OS "C" drive, I created a another partition for W10, after installing W10 using the USB ISO "boot from USB" instruction when I'm in W10 it shows as the C drive, and the W7 partition is inactive D drive. Just the opposite when I'm in W7, it shows as the active C partition and W10 is the inactive D partition.

On my desktop I have the 120G C drive for W7, a 500G D drive for backups, a fixed CD-ROM E drive, and a virtual CD-ROM F drive. I've made a 30G partition on the C drive to install W10 on for the dual boot. The question is when the auto backup runs (I have it backup & image every Sunday at 7:00pm) it backs up the C drive to the D drive. Will the W10 dual boot install change my backup drive letter to something other than D, or will the non OS physical drives keep the same drive letter? I will have to remember to be in W7 for it to be the C drive when it backs up, but my concern was if the dual boot was going to change my backup drive to something other than D. That would affect the backup.

I've attached disk mgmt. below, FYI the G drive is the USB with the W10 ISO

Installation :: Wrong Drive Letter In Msconfig / Boot In Dual Boot System

Jan 27, 2016

In my desktop I have two hard disks ( disk 0 and disk 1 ) . Disk 1 is a clone of disk 0 created by Macrium Reflect
Disk 0 : ( C: ) windows 10 pro , upgrade from windows 7 , ( E: ) windows 8.1 pro , ( G: ) Storage partition
Disk 1 : clone of disk 0

problem description : I see in msconfig / boot a wrong listing

windows 10 ( C:WINDOWS) : Current OS ; Default OS

windows 8.1 pro ( H:WINDOWS ) instead of ( E:WINDOWS )

Nevertheless the dual booting works fine as well as the shift between the disks via BIOS.

The question is , could I fix the situation using the EasyBCD of Neosmart Technologies to edit the bootloader ?

I see can change drive letter H: to E: and save the change , am I right or wrong ? or any other way ....

Failure To Restart Repaired With Update

Aug 29, 2015

New HP 15. Upgraded to Windows Ten 2-3 weeks ago. When updates began being pushed and a restart was required, my laptop would freeze during restart. I would then power down / up and all is well.

I noticed during restart my wifi lamp would go orange (disconnected) and cycle to blue (connected). If I powered down / up the same sequence would occur followed by my audio off lamp (orange) illuminating.

Happened every time. Figured it had something to do with an audio driver but I don't have the knowledge to say if it was that or the phase of the moon.

Today I received update KB3081448, went to restart and it actually restarted. I knew when the speaker button lit I was good.

Just for s&g, I have "restarted" 5 times in about the past 30 minutes successfully. What the update is or if it's a coincidence however restart now works. Just throwing this out there for those who may be documenting all this stuff.

Corrupt Files Found By SFC Cannot Be Repaired

Nov 1, 2015

I have run SFC /SCANNOW and a large number of files have been found to be corrupted in Windows 10, and cannot be repaired by SFC.  The CBS log is too large to attach, but I have extracted a list of all corrupt files attached.

After looking at similar posts, I downloaded SFCFIX.exe by Sysnative and ran that in an elevated command prompt, but the message I got was that source file could not be found.  I have also run SFC in safe mode and also run DISM, but neither solves my problem, and the corrupt files persist.

BSOD :: Changed Permissions On All Files On C Drive Now Get Black Screen?

Nov 12, 2015

Windows 10 In Windows Explorer, I right-clicked on C: and went to Properties and then selected the Security tab and edited the permissions to Allow Full control and it ran for a long, long time. When I re-booted the computer it works fine until after the Sign In screen then the screen goes black. I have a cursor and if I hit Ctrl-Atl-Delete I can select Task Manager but then the screen goes black again. I can boot into Safe Mode with Networking and I can get a Command Prompt in Safe Mode. I have looked at ICACLS but I'm not sure how to use it to re-set the permissions back to normal Windows 10 settings.

Error 0x80070006 Installing Apps To SD - Works Fine When Changed C Drive?

I have an HP Stream 7 that only has 32 GB of space. I put in an SD card and changed the default location in "Storage" to install all new apps to the SD card. Whenever I try to install an app now, I get an error and will not install. When I changed it back to install on C, it downloads and works fine. Is there any work arounds? I saw that someone mentioned they installed the apps to C, and then moved them to the SD card.

Why Would HDD Have No Letter Associated

Aug 30, 2015

Just sort of curious, I noticed that in disk management that I had 4 drives listed

C:
GAMES (H:)
STORAGE (F:)
HONDA AND VOLVO (D:)

But then there was another drive simply listed as "GAMES".

I always thought it was just some screw up and a duplicate of the H drive (since they both are named as "GAMES") which has games on it but the odd part was that it didn't have a drive letter associated with it after the upgrade to 10.

It was a listed drive in Windows 7 so wondering why the drive letter was removed during the Windows 10 upgrade.

One Letter Not Working On Keyboard?

Mar 30, 2016

I have one key working only when held down long enough (when it starts to spray that letter). Not an hardware problem.

Estonian keyboard layout. English keyboard layout works fine. Finnish keyboard layout has different key not working.

On-screen keyboard has same problem.

Problem started just one day. Before was fine. I have tried some malware scans, registry fixes, safe mode, keyboard driver reinstall, other keyboard.

Where could this problem be located? Registry? Someone in internet thinks its malware. I dont think I installed something new previous to that problem.

Installation :: Driver Letter Change Post Sysprep?

Aug 5, 2015

Preparing upgrade to 10
Did clean install Window 7 to customize, sysprep, image, install on several duplicate PCs prior to upgrade
1st drive is SSD, 2nd is HDD
SSD partition c: os and d: virtual box
HDD e: data

wrote answer file move user and program data from c: to e:

Something happened post sysprep and partition letters switched d and e, I changed the drive letters in windows and now can't get into profile There is a shortcut to e on the d partition of SSD Tried reassigning letters using diskpart but they don't remain when entering windows but go back to the wrong assignment.

I googled this and apparently it happens but I don't know why. I can only think that I was lucky to image the clean OS however if I can fix this it would save me time. If not, I will get rid of the d: partition and put that post sysprep

Here is the answer file

Pinned TaskBar Icons - How To Replace Letter Tiles With Website Logo

Sep 6, 2015

Most of my pinned task bar icons that I have added are all simplified tiles with the first letter of the corresponding website.

ie: Gmail is " G", American Airlines is " A", Flyertalk is " F". Google is " G" (causing confusion with Gmail.), etc.

Is there any way to change these tiled icons to the website logo like in windows 8.1 or 7?

How To Ensure 8.1 Revert

I presume I'll need a system image and a recovery disk but i'm not sure of the best way to do that.

Can Revert To Windows 7 Second Time?

Oct 10, 2015

I like Windows 10 but it caused too many problems, so I used the option to revert to Windows 7. This has also meant a return to getting insistent messages wanting me to install Windows 10 again (and on one occasion, an attempt to install it without my permission). My question is, if I do reinstall Windows 10 and run into the same problems, will I have the option to return to Windows 7 a second time?

How To Manually Revert To Windows 7

Nov 11, 2015

I'd like to perform a manual revert to Windows 7.An elderly client accidentally upgraded what I believe was Windows 7 Home to Windows 10. This was within the last week, and Windows.OLD is still there, but “Go back to Windows 7” is not an option.

(Yes, he was the only user, and he was an admin. For some reason, Windows 10 says it's the Pro edition now. I don't know why. I don't understand why “Go back to Windows 7” isn't present. Client doesn't know what he did, nor what options he selected along the way. Yes, a clean reinstall could be done, but returning to the old setup saves about four hours of other reinstalls and setups.)

Microsoft has a KB971760 "How to restore a Windows 7-based computer to a previous Windows installation by using the Windows.old folder".I'd like to confirm that this same process would work from Windows 10 to Windows 7.

Revert Permissions To All Folders Quickly?

Aug 20, 2015

Windows 10 seems to have changed the permissions settings to all my files and folders - and I have lot of them (documents, photos, music etc).

I must have at least 30 000 images stored as I'm a pro photographer and thousands of documents. I currently can't save or change anything as I'm told the files are read-only and I don't permission to do that. This is seriously delaying my work.

I'm not on a network and I am the administrator.

A) There is a universal way to do this throughout my drives (C and D) quickly or if I have to do it by folder (which could take forever).

B) The easiest way to do it.

C) Microsoft are aware of how they have seriously messed up our computers and if they are doing anything about it.
