BSOD :: Changed Permissions On All Files On C Drive Now Get Black Screen?

Nov 12, 2015

Windows 10 In Windows Explorer, I right-clicked on C: and went to Properties and then selected the Security tab and edited the permissions to Allow Full control and it ran for a long, long time. When I re-booted the computer it works fine until after the Sign In screen then the screen goes black. I have a cursor and if I hit Ctrl-Atl-Delete I can select Task Manager but then the screen goes black again. I can boot into Safe Mode with Networking and I can get a Command Prompt in Safe Mode. I have looked at ICACLS but I'm not sure how to use it to re-set the permissions back to normal Windows 10 settings.

External Hard Drive Permissions Not Working

Mar 29, 2016

I cannot get my external hard drives to give me write permissions over my local network in some directions.I recently replaced our hard drives with SSDs and with the reinstall, I had some difficulty getting the permissions on my external hard drives working correctly.

I did several Google searches and read a procedure that I needed to go through adding a user called "Everyone" to each of my drives that I wanted to access and share. I did this and gave "Everyone" full read/write permissions and also went into advanced options (or wherever it is) and chose the checkbox to give all child files and folders these same permissions. It took ages but eventually it all seemed OK.

I had one folder which could not be corrected this way and ended up having go change each file individually. Anyway, I thought I was all set but if I try to move a file from Machine A to Machine B (the drives are attached to , I get an error that I don't have permission to do this. No overrides or Admin permissions are an option and when I check the specifics it *is* correctly shared with not only Everyone but this machine as well (so it attempted to fix the permissions itself at some point). However, if I go to Machine B and grab the files from Machine A over the network ...

Deleted Local Disk Permissions

Jul 30, 2015

After I installed win 10 yesterday, I was looking around and I noticed the windows.old file in my local disk. I looked online and saw that it was safe to delete it, but I couldn't because I didn't have permissions. So I followed a youtube tutorial on how to gain permissions, but I performed this on the entire c drive (note that this is my only drive). The video showed that I had to delete all the permission settings previously there. You can kind of see where this is going. So I did then I gave myself permissions. I immediately saw that win 10 started to not function properly. So I tried to re-add system and administrators to the drive permissions. Some of the win 10 functionalities returned and I thought that restarting my pic would fix the rest. But now after the win 10 logo I get a black screen and I can't log in.

Drivers/Hardware :: Can't Access Old Hard Drive - Bad Disk

Feb 10, 2016

My old Windows XP Desktop stopped running 2 weeks ago, with a No OS Found error. Since then I've taken the hard drive out and connected it to my new Windows 10 desktop with a USB 2.0 to SATA Adapter. It does not show up in "My Computer", but is detected in Computer Management.

The drive's an old Western Digital WD2000 one, and started clicking (for a few seconds) as soon as I attached it to the PC w/the USB Adapter. The clicking stopped after that.

It shows up as "Disk 1, Unknown, with the amount of data on it (186.31 GB [out of 200]), and is Unallocated. I've already tried numerous utility and Data Recovery programs, such as Recuva, MiniTool Partition Wizard, EaseUS Data/Partition Recovery. No luck with these.

They were either not detected, or didn't find anything. MiniTool Partition Wizard said it's a "Bad Disk" I

Partition Find and Mount is still conducting a scan which has been going for the past 7 hours (35%).

BTW - I really can't leave the hard drive on for the night to conduct a long scan. It's been overheating, and I already have a large fan next to it to cool it down. It's not safe to leave this on for an extended period of time.

Only to find out I bought a USB 3.0 Adapter instead of a 2.0 my old XP supported when It still ran.

Networking :: Can't Access Network USB Shared Hard Drive

Dec 26, 2015

I have a usb connected hard drive connected to my Bell 2000 router. The instructions to access this drive is to go to the Documents folder and enter mynetwork. This then shows the shared hard drive as mynetworkNETWORKHD. If I now click on NETWORKHD I get the following:

mynetworkNWTWORKHD is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contac the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Not enough storage is available to process this command. This all worked for me under Windows 7. I am unsure if it ever worked under Windows 10.

If I plug a 2 gb thumb drive into the other port on my Bell 2000 rounter it works without any problem.

Can't Drag And Drop Files - Permissions And Security Settings?

Dec 11, 2015

Ever since i've updated to Windows 10 i've been having an issue with permissions which im unable to fix.

Basically all of my software and files located on a non-system hard drive appear to be restricted in one way or another despite the fact that i've manually set all of the permissions and made myself an owner of an entire hard drive.

Here are the examples of issues i've experienced:

1) I can't run any software i've installed on that hard drive unless im running it as administrator. This includes GOM player, Adobe Photoshop, Filezilla, Steam and other applications. I can run any software on a system disk without confirming it first as administrator though.

2) I can't drag and drop files from that hard drive to or from installed applications like GOM and VLC player's or Adobe Photoshop - it just won't let me since the cursor changes into a cross. If i installed the software on a system drive - i can drag and drop files (movies, photos, etc) just fine when i need to play something in VLC or edit files in Photoshop.

3) I couldn't use archives and drag and drop files from and to archives without a warning about "harmful files" popping up constantly until i installed winrar on a system disk.

4) Some files gotten locked if they were downloaded from the internet. I think i was able to fix that by editing permissions and security settings in gpedit.msc and explorer though.

Is there a reason why this keeps happening?

I just upgraded my Win 7 Laptop to Win 10, but I seem to have lost my admin rights to certain folders and actions.

I am getting "You don't have permission to save in this location" messages when trying to look at the Local Users and Groups console or save files.I can not download/ save (do not get the save dialog at the bottom of Edge (or IE for that matter)).Also I am not able to do the "Sign in with a Microsoft account instead" procedure in the "Your account" window. Nothing happens when I fill in my email and click.

I want my control back, of the Laptop. How do I solve this?

Accounts :: Local Account Password Changed?

Feb 10, 2016

I have linked my Windows 10 app store to a BT provided email address. After rebooting it has asked me to login. It has changed my local account from my name to my BT email address and asking for a password. This is not my normal password and has seemed to link my BT account within the Microsoft environment and assigned it a password. I now cannot log in to my PC? I have spoken to Microsoft about 15 times and just keep getting passed around. I have tried resetting the password via Microsoft but it fails every time. Any way i can switch to log in locally via my old password?

Apps :: Scanning Permissions - Can't Access The Documents Folder

Aug 4, 2015

the windows fax and scan utility can't start up because it can't access the documents folder, where it saves the scans.

Then I tried the windows 10 scan app. It saves by default to the pictures folder. It, too, could not save to the default location. but I discovered that I can set it to save to desktop, and that works. But it forgets my choice as soon as I close the app.

I am the owner of these folders. Why can't my apps access them? I checked documents properties, and I have full permissions.

External Hard Disk Partition Changed From NTFS To FAT32

Apr 4, 2016

I tried to access a laptop hard disk using an adapter from a laptop. Once or twice It was successful but last time I checked it showed me files and folders with unreadable characters and it's partitions are also gone. When I checked its format I found out that it has changed from NTFS to FAT32.

When I try to open any file or folder it gives an error message saying it's not accessible and the filename or directory name is incorrect. I tried reading another hard disk to see if it's something to do with my adapter but they are all working fine. What happened or to recover the data unharmed?.

Lost All Permissions And Control Of Files / Folders After Plugging In Second Drive

Dec 9, 2015

I plugged in the hard drive from my wife's PC into my own PC (both windows 10) so I could try to recover some files from it (as it's currently not booting into windows). As soon as I booted my PC back up I could see the second hard drive was there but since then I've been experiencing all sorts of issues. I am still an administrator but I just don't seem to be able to do anything - it's hard to describe, but I can't move or change or delete ANY files or folders on my system, I can't move files to or from an external drive for back up, on the desktop the right click menu doesn't come up at all and on files/folders it has no ability to access properties.

Also, whilst most programs still open normally, any Microsoft Office programs just don't do anything at all when clicked on. It's as if I have lost all control over making any changes on my PC.I assumed that the two drives were conflicting in some way so removed the second drive but the problems are still there.

Why Can't Access Local Administrator Account

Mar 13, 2016

When I "upgraded" to Windows 10, apparently I set up everything on the local administrator account. When I went to set up a separate account yesterday it disabled me from getting onto the administrator account, which is where I have everything set up. When I go to log in, both accounts are on the log-in screen but it won't take the passwords for the administrator account, which I know are correct and it even gives me the right hints but won't accept the pw. It says, "Your password was changed on a different device and you must sign in to this device once with your new password and then you can sign in with your new PIN. Well, I haven't added any devices, just a new local account. I really need to get back into the administrator account since that is where everything is. I've done the prompt, CMD, net user administrator /active:yes and it just denies access obviously because I am logged in as an administrator.

Will Local Account Be Able To Access Apps

Mar 29, 2015

I have a desktop PC at home, shared with the whole family, parents, sister and I. In win7, We have 3 separate account, one for me, one for sister, these two accounts have password. And also a third account for my parents to do simple things, like net surfing or watching youtube.

However, since win8, MS encourage us to use microsoft account, which must be protected by password. There is no problem for me and sister, as we are using win8 laptop. But my parents are not good to remember password, and it is even not necessary to use password.

Drivers/Hardware :: Unable To Access Local Disks

Oct 23, 2015

I am currently unable to access my Local Disks, or open programs inside them, such as the task manager, user account control, and even the registry editor. Attempting to open anything (With administrator priveleges) just result in an access denied message. I have tried multiple solutions off the first searches on google, though none of them have worked, due to the things required in those solutions not being able to be accessed.

I have even tried to reset my PC and reinstall Windows, though when I click the "Get Started" button, nothing happens.
Is there any hope left for me, or do I need to get new drivers and abandon my valuable data?

Windows Cannot Access Local Disk (C) And Can't Open Programs Related To It

Feb 26, 2016

I was tinkering with the security settings of Local Disk (C: ) so that I get full access to it so as to delete unwanted files. I tried but accidentally now the local disk doesn't have an owner. So I can't access Administrator (cmd). When I try and access those settings to define an owner, it shows 'Access is denied.'. I tried working in safe mode but safe mode won't open. I tried resetting windows 10 both ways (keeping and deleting all files) but it says 'resetting failed.'. I cannot access Local disk (C: ) and cannot opens programs related to it like notepad, task manager, etc.

Permission Errors - Access Denied Messages When Saving Files In Various Local Directories

Aug 26, 2015

Ever since upgrading to Windows 10 I am having random "Access Denied" messages when saving files in various local directories. From my research it appears that I need to take ownership of my files again. However, I can't seem to get the system to understand that I am the owner. When attempting to take control many folders will come up with an enumeration error. Why I am unable to take possession of my own folders? I think the reason I'm having issues is that after I upgraded I switched to a Microsoft account which uses a different username than what I used previously before the upgrade. But, there should still be a way to claim access to my files.

Initial Error Message:

Drivers/Hardware :: Hard Drive Inaccessible After Upgrade (Apps Stored On Drive Run)

Jan 14, 2016

Problem: When I click on my H: drive or try to access it from the command line, it gives me an access denied error. However, all of the applications that I have installed on that drive run without issue. So, there is some access there. (See attached images. The first shows the hard drive state in diskmanager and in windows explorer. The second image shows the minecrafter launcher profile (that it is stored in H: and the application running, proving that there is some access.

System: Home built PC: (C:) 240GB SSD for OS, (E:) 1TB HDD for file storage and backup, (H:) 1TB HDD for large applications and video editing files. All drives are Simple, Basic, and none have encryption. All use the SATA connectors.

Process: I had Windows 7 Home 64 bit with, among many other things, Comodo Internet Security, Virtualbox, ImageDisk.
During the upgrade process, I noticed that Windows 10, during the upgrade, ran the file system check and fix "problems" on the H: drive.

(Side note) Having forgotten to uninstall Comodo before the upgrade, I did not have network after the upgrade. The fix was non-trivial as I had to use a second computer to download the unofficial comodo uninstaller. Reboot. Uninstall the network devices. Reboot. And once Windows 10 was up and running, it reinstalled the network devices and the network was available.

Still, whether before or after the Comodo uninstall and reinstall, the uninstall of ImageDisk, or the uninstall of the Virtualbox network device, I have no access to the H: drive.

Repaired PC Got Drive Letter Changed From F To C And Can't Revert

Sep 5, 2015

After the store where I bought my pc from repaired my pc (seems like it was a drivers issue) it came back with disk F (the ssd) renamed to C, so now all my shortcuts on the favourites say this:

It's pretty annoying, I cant call them on a Saturday about the issue. I know they tried booting up with an external disk and that's why it's renamed, but I can't rename it back to F, I've tried it and it gives me an error because the disk is in use I think, I've also tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free and the optiong to change disk letter disappears when I click on the one I need changed..

SSD Detected - Secondary Drive (Hard Drive) Is Not

Jul 30, 2015

Ever since doing a fresh install of Windows 10, in "This PC", my secondary hard drive is not in the list. I have already tried right clicking "This PC" and clicking Manage -> Disk Management, but there is nothing there except my SSD with Windows 10 installed.

I have tried changing SATA cables, SATA ports, but it still does not appear in This PC. I have also tried installing my hard drive on a another computer to see if the files were corrupted. They were not, all files were still the same before the installation of Windows 10. I did not leave the hard drive plugged in during the installation.

In the BIOS, my computer recognizes both my SSD and my hard drive, but in This PC, it's still missing.
