I assume there was an update to Win 10 last night. Woke up this morning to find all my tweaking to the OS over the last several weeks was erased! Back to new born state. All my programs are still here but every single setting that I have checked so far has been set back to "start". Its as if I finished the upgrade to Win 10 5 min. ago.

My installation is stuck in a reset loop. The Win 10 Ready to Install came up, so I clicked Start and it rebooted, back to the login screen, and then Windows Update came up saying it needed to Restart Now. After a couple of minutes the Win 10 Ready screen comes up again. I've rebooted about 20 times and get to the same point every time.

View 1 RepliesMy PC updated Windows 10 yesterday afternoon ("Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173)". After rebooting, it completely screwed all my custom file associations (mostly for media files: photos, audio, and video).
A few minutes after the reboot, the Action Center started firing popups at me, one after the other, every few seconds:
"An app default was reset. An app caused a problem with the default setting for .avi files so it was reset to Films & TV."
with a different file extension for each popup (avi, bmp, mp4, and so on) . Even .pdf files were changed from Adobe Reader to Microsoft Edge. As well, all my custom context menu items for these same file types were also deleted. I spent a lot of time setting these associations up and now they were all obliterated. I'd backed them all up in a .reg file but running it didn't do anything. So with a heavy (and angry) sigh I started manually changing the associations back to the way I had them. However, each time I finished making a change within seconds the Action Center would fire the same message as before at me for the file type I'd just changed and it would be reset back to the MS default again.
Finally in exasperation, I just used System Restore to go back before the updates and that solved the problem. Now, the Action Center keeps nagging me to set a time to reinstall this same update. I know I can't block it indefinitely, and there are probably important security patches in it I should have. So the question is: How can I stop it from f'ing up my file associations again?
I am having trouble accessing MS app store and also updating office 2016 through any of the office applications.
My question is, will win 10 apps and office 2016 default update through windows update?
Bought a new PC that came with Win-8.1 and decided to jump direct to Win-10 with a clean install... no update from 8.1.
It worked fine for the first 3 weeks but within the last week when I do a Restart it goes into the "Don't turn your computer off while doing update" or something to that effect.
It restarts three times getting as far as 55% but the next time it restarts (the 4th time) message says "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes". When it finishes it restarts again and finally boots correctly.
PS: If I do a Shutdown and power up again the it boots correctly... no restarts!
For the past few days I have been having the issue were an update keeps failing in windows 10 so every time it re downloads the update it tells me that my pc is going to restart in about 10 minutes regardless of what I am doing and this is about at least 3 times a dat and it is extremely annoying.
The update is a thing called "microsoft malicious software removal tool" and windows wont let me disable automatic restarts or automatic updates and i dont even need this "update" because its just a virus removal tool which I don't need but windows wont let me cancel the update.
Well only 'View installed updates' works. (the earliest shows only one of 21 November - I thought November had a big update. no?)Clicking these does nothing:-

As I updated via this on another computer yesterday with no problem (except updating 4 items took over 4 hours!!) what can be my present glitch be?
I bought a used PC that came with Windows 10, upgraded from Windows 7. There are still files and such left over from the previous owner so I wanted to do a complete reset of windows 10 and return to factory defaults. The problem is that when I go to settings/recovery and choose the option "Reset this PC" nothing at all happens. I push the button and I can tell it is thinking a little bit, but then nothing at all happens. The PC is functioning as normal, it just won't reset.
So 2 questions:
1. Why reset this pc doesn't do anthing?
2. If I reinstall windows 10 using the media creation tool and a usb flash drive, will that in any way mess up the windows 10 activation? (I don't care about going back to win7 so if I lose that it's fine).
Have just upgraded this afternoon and now can't get beyond the request for a password on my lap top. The password I have always used is apparently "incorrect". I can't reset either as I am being told I need a USB flash drive which I don't have. Why is this happening and what can I do to get into my lap top?
View 6 RepliesSo, right after installing W10, I spent a bunch of time messing around with the new Start Menu. I wound up removing a bunch of items from my "Most Used Apps" list by right-clicking on them and selecting "Do not show in this list".
I've not got my Start Menu setup the way I'd like it, but those apps I removed from the "Most Used Apps" list, of course, aren't showing up.
Where or how to reset that "Most Used Apps" list?
I've been running Windows 10 on my laptop since it was released. At the end of November, my control panel was corrupted and wouldn't launch. I removed the latest update and then other apps like Mail, Calendar wouldn't work. I ended up using the Reset this PC option and everything works fine; it took me back to build 10240. Immediately after I reverted back to 10240 there were a couple of updates but I've received none since then including 10586.29 or .36. I check for updates and it finds none. I've reset BITS and Windows Update.
View 2 RepliesI wanted to reset my windows 10 (delete all the files and not the OS) and I left ithe to reset over night but I woke up and the reset was still on 2% so I decided to stop the reset and restart my pc but now when it boots up the computer it can't boot to windows and it just does a cycle of showing the boot options and for some reason I can't select the boot options from my keyboard.

I upgraded to Win10 from Win8.1 when it was released for free upgrades in 2015. It is now 2016 and I wanted to Factory Reset my PC so I can start fresh again. I attempted to do it from Settings/Update and Security/Recovery/Reset this PC as suggested by Microsoft but I received and error saying "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made." After searching the web I found many different fixes but they all seems so involved. Making a boot flash drive or burning a DVD and use their software... There is an awesome tutorial on this forum called Windows 10 Clean Install but I like to KISS when I can (Keep It Simple Stupid) so I decided to check with Microsoft.com before I started that process.
THE SIMPLE FIX I FOUND THAT WORKED FOR ME:
Go to: Windows 10
Click the "Upgrade Now" button.
Follow the prompts and you're good to go.
Works with Windows 7, 8 and 10.
I am running Windows 10 Home, upgraded from Windows 7. I'm trying to reinstall Windows 10 via the 'Reset PC' function. Each time I try the ensuing restart results in WDF_Violation. This error occurs regards whether I initiate the function in safe mode or the other ways.

View 2 RepliesI have a Intel Nuc, which I set up myself with windows 8.1 this was upgraded to windows 10.I tried to reset windows 10 tonight as im selling the computer, it got stuck at 66%, reported an error about not being able to complete, after a number of attempts and the same result i chose the option to restart pc.
Upon restart i now get nothing at all, no bios screen, no windows screen, not recognising prompts from keyboard. Tried external dvd player with original windows disc in, usb powers it but nothing. Just a black screen of nothing!!!! Monitor recognises hdmi cable is connected, its like the pc wont display anything.
Want to reset my Host File as part of trying to solve a problem Internet Explorer.

I was hoping that it would fix whatever the problem has been. The reset removed MS Office and a few other programs I use a lot. I have MS Office on a thumb drive, but it said that the operating system is not configured to run the program.
View 1 RepliesI've upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro (activated with DreamSpark key) to the Windows 10 Build 10162 and then to the latest Build 10240. Now, I want to do PC reset. To complete that, I'll need a installation media, so I've already downloaded ESD of Build 10240 and converted to ISO.
Will my PC stay activated after the reset? Will my PC stay activated when I upgrade to RTM and do clean install via ISO when it's available?
Sometime ago I've give my laptop a factory reset, but now it's giving a different name, how can I change that?
