I would like most of my folders to open with Details for the view. Then when I want it differently I can change it. It seems like every time I open a new folder or one that has not yet been opened within 10 they all are large icons which provide little information.
Is there a way to set a one time default for all folders? Also is there a way set a default for a folder tree?
I am irritated by the "Windows 8" apps screen, set as my default. It shows all the tiles I need and seems to work well enough, but if (for example) I go into emails and then want to come out, I'm taken back to the start menu and must click on "Windows 8" again to open the apps screen.
Is there any way I can change settings so I'm returned immediately to the apps screen? I know it's just a couple more clicks but it seems so pointless to be slowed down every time in that way.
In the past I have had to go around to each computer and set the default programs. Is there a way to create a batch file to set default programs silently for each user that signs on? Like we would like to have Adobe Reader DC, Internet Explorer, and VLC player be the default programs.

I can change the sort columns, but where is the "Apply to all folder of this type" button?
Can't find how to make those columns the default.
For some reason, my picture folder is in "Quick Access" pinned. When I go into the properties of the Photos folder that is pinned in "Quick Access", I look at the locations tab and it says it's in my User Folder. Though it does not appear inside of the User Folder, whereas Documents, Music, Downloads, and Videos folders are. I've unchecked "Hidden Items" and it's still not there. Now, if I type in the directory manually it opens as if it's there. On the left pane in the Windows Explorer where "This PC" is at, I have two Documents. One has the regular icon, the other has a picture icon. When I click on either of them, they take me to the Documents folder.
As you can see below somewhat of my predicament. How to get my pictures folder back to normal in "This PC" and my User Folder.
I have just realized my Documents folder icon inside the User Folder has the "One Drive" icon. I am not sure as to why that is as I've disabled One Drive completely on my computer. Extremely frustrating.
I deleted the "Documents" folder that has the Pictures folder icon and it deleted my actual Documents folder as well.
I recently upgraded my Hard Drive with an Samsung SSD Drive evo 850 for my operating system and programs. I placed the secondary drive to host my file folders. Somehow in the mist of trying to automatically port my default Document, Downloads, Pictures,Videos and Music Folder to the secondary drive, my Music folder name changed to (Document) as you can see on the image with the arrow pointed to it.. Now i tried to right click it and in the General tab it shows the name Document greyed with the music symbol out, so i can't change it.

For instance My Pictures, you can right click My Pictures / customize / "optimize this folder for general items" which will change the view to Details, but only temporarily. This also applies to the Desktop. You can create a folder on your desktop, inside create a sub-folder and put some files inside that. You'll notice the default view for the sub-folder will always be the Icon view. Now anyone that's on computers a lot will know that the Icon view when dealing with a lot of files is just a big jumbled mess, I always use the Detailed view, for everything.
It also seems to me they never stay the same. I'll go to My Documents one day and it will be randomly changed back to the Icon view, I can't be the only person who has noticed this. And why there no master setting to set all the folders on your computer to one view, permanently.
When I try to open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens the "Documents" Folder by default. I have to choose "Open" or "Open in New Window" to get it right. If I select "Open Windows Explorer" or double click on the folder, my Documents folder opens. I have reset every setting I can think of to default settings. I installed IoBit Advanced System Care9 Pro and was fiddling with a bunch of settings before this occurred.
View 6 RepliesI have screwed up my default open folder with.. it all started by trying to set the default console to powershell, I have been messing around with registry settings but in the end I failed to set it up.. then I went and double clicked a folder to open it and discovered that the default double click option was "open with visual code", that is when I started to dig around in registry again.. and removed visual code from being the default but somehow ended up screwing even more my default open, I can now only open my folders by right clicking on them and open in a new window..
if I double click them I get the following error message "windows cannot access the specified device path or file you may not have appropriate permissions"
Is there a way to globally change the Default Folder View? I've used Folder Options | View | Apply to Folders a few times, but it only seems to stick on folders I've opened.

I have attached a pic of what it says.I have changed the permissions to let me do this or am I looking in the wrong place? If I save the files to the desktop however and then move to the relevant folder it works fine.

View 9 RepliesI changed the location the of my Pictures folder from the default C:usersmynamePictures to D:onedrivepictures, Worked great until I decided to use new Google Photo on Google Drive. Using File Explorer, I moved all photos from D:one drivepictures to E:Google DriveGoogle Photos. Then went to library/Pictures/properties/location/move and selected my new folder E:Google DriveGoogle Photos, hit apply, responded no to 'do you want to move all the files' and got pop up 'Folder cant be moved here - Access Denied.
I've tried restore to original, created other test folders on drive D and E - it wont save to any other location or restore to default location - get the Access denied.
Is there a way to change the default folder for downloads in Edge? I don't really want downloads being directed to my C: which is a SSD. I would prefer to change this to my HDD. Internet Explorer allowed this.

I have a large number of research articles on my laptop (via dropbox). One thing I loved about Windows 7 was that I could just hit the Start button, type a keyword into the search box and a results window would pop up that listed every matching document on my computer. I was also able to customize this so that it always came up in "Details" view.
I can't seem to get that same thing with Windows 10. When I type something into the search field on the task bar, I have to first select that I want it to search my stuff and not the web. After I do that it will only bring up a limited amount of results. I have to click again to see the whole set of hits--and then if I hit "Folder Explorer" at the bottom of the menu, it brings up the results in "Tile" view.
First, I can't figure out how to set the Folder Explorer default view to "Details".
Also, is there a way I search directly into Folder Explorer via the task bar search box?
Next, I don't mind that the taskbar offers me the option of websearch
Its possible to customize one or more folders to a specific file view like "list" or "details" for example? Whenever I close the folder or go back to the previous folder the default system sets back default view which was adopted by the system or the view that was defined by me for all the folders in: Folder Options -> View -> Apply to Folders.
View 7 RepliesSince installing the November Windows 10 update (11/17/15) none of my favorites are being stored in the default Edge folder. While in Edge the favorites are available but when I go to the default folder they are not listed. Is there another location they may be being saved or has my default location somehow been changed? My AppData folder shows a creation date of 11/17/15 with no modifications being made in favorites since that date.

I have downloaded Windows 10 as an ISO and transferred this to an NTFS formatted memory stick. The installation process works ok but I am having problems getting the SSD setup for UEFI mode and secure boot. what settings I need to apply under CSM to get the SSD running in UEFI mode? View 2 RepliesSo at my work and home I have been setting up Bitlocker. Today at work I was setting up Bitlocker on a PC and we could not get a password for a option to unlock the device. The only option we get is to either use a USB or a pin. As per the compliance officer we have to require an encryption passphrase upon boot and I am not big on pins. How do I get my passphrase ability back?
View 6 RepliesSo I thought I'd give Cortana a try since I can turn it off again if I don't want it, however I get to the point where it makes me login, I enter my email address and password and then it takes me to the next step where it tells me something like you need to enter your current password just one more time.
I enter the same password one last time and it tells me it's wrong.
I go through it all over again and reset my password and try again, go though the first login and get to the second stage where it asks me to enter my password one "last" time, and I do and it tells me it's wrong again.
Try a third time, this time leaving the password blank on the 2nd step and still fails.
Edit: I know the password is correct as I've used it to login to live this morning, so not sure why it's not accepting it in the 2nd stage of the Cortana setup.
I use a VPN and Cortana and the OS thinks I'm somewhere else. Is there anyplace to put a zip code to force the OS to think you're in a specific location?
View 2 RepliesI've been using Windows 10 set up exactly as I wanted it since my original installation. Today I wanted to set up Cortana. It was suggested that I use a PIN instead of a password. I thought this was just for Cortana so I agreed. Now my whole system has been changed. I have to log in with my Microsoft account which I never had to do and don't want to do. How can I get back to my original name with no long-in at startup.
