Updates :: Disable Automatic Reboot?

Aug 17, 2015

Windows 10 seems to like rebooting without my permission - such as when I have a fullscreen game open, and I also miss the notification to postpone. How do I disable this? I don't have windows pro and thus cant use gpedit. The registry keys various pages suggested editing don't seem to exist.

I don't want to turn off windows update, I just want my laptop to never ever restart on its own, its a ridiculous "feature".

I've been using Windows 10 Home since day one and I still haven't figured out a way to disable automatic app updates. When I go to the Store settings all I get is this:

However, I am the administrator. I know that in Windows 10 Home edition you cannot disable the updates that you get with Windows Update. Does this also include the updates that you get through the Store?

Drivers :: How To Disable Automatic Updates

Mar 17, 2016

Microsoft has made it mandatory for Windows 10 users to update their computers. From what I understand, they have set the new operating system to automatically receive new updates by default. I also heard from a colleague that Microsoft recently released a tool that can be used to hide or disable Windows 10 updates selectively.

How To Disable Automatic Updates Install

Oct 16, 2015

If you don't want windows 10 to automatically install updates, open the Services desktop app. Scroll down until you come to the service: Windows update (Enables the detection, download and installation of updates for Windows and other programs.) Double click on it. From the new box select Start up type and change from Automatic to Disabled. Windows will no longer automatically install updates on you computer. When you want to install updates yourself, Go back to the windows update service and change the startup type back to automatic...

How To Disable Automatic Updates For ALL Hardware Drivers

Aug 5, 2015

I know there are plenty of people who for one reason or another, would rather manually manage their driver updates. So for those of you who aren't aware, it is possible to disable Windows 10's automatic driver update feature completely.

First you will need to enter the "System" window. You can get here by right-clicking the start button and selecting "System".Click "Advanced System Settings".Click the "Hardware" tab.Click "Device Installation" settings, and select the "No, let me choose what to do" option, and you'll see the options below.

If you want to manually control it, choose the "Never install drivers from Windows Update" option.

Reboot Loop / Cannot Open Automatic Repair And Can't Run Setup From USB

Jun 13, 2015

I was running the Win 10 build 10074, in the slow ring. I left it unattended for update, which included the newer build 10130. Before leaving, it was at 99% downloaded. When I returned after 30 mins, it was stuck in an endless restart loop.

It restarts within 2 seconds of displaying the Windows logo, when I try to boot from the HDD. If it goes into Automatic Repair, it shows "Starting automatic repair" under the logo and restarts after some time.

But the worst thing is that the same problem occurs, Even if I try to run Windows 10 setup/repair from a USB drive!! (build 10130). It just reboots a few seconds after showing the logo, even when I removed the HDD. I am totally stuck. I am currently running Ubuntu from a USB drive, which is working just fine.

I am not sure what happened in my absence, though it's unlikely that the newer build was installed in just half an hour. The only idea thing that I can think of and have not tried is to try running an earlier build or version from the USB drive.

Updates :: Must Stop Both Automatic Updates And Notifications?

Nov 3, 2015

I have Windows 10 Home Edition, like millions of others. Like millions of others, I prefer to hibernate my computer rather than shut it down outright most nights. And like millions of others, I am getting awakened IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT because Windows 10 is trying to notify me about updates! Repeatedly.

When I want information about updates, I'll ask. I've turned off the Update Service on the Services tab of the Task Manager. After some hours or some days, it turns itself back on. A cat-and-mouse game with Microsoft. I have stopped the automatic updates themselves but I can't stop the stop the aggressive notifications. Should I be happy? At least the computer is no longer shutting down without warning IN THE MIDDLE OF A PROJECT THAT I'M WORKING ON to update. But it stills turns on at various hours of the night, cooking with its lid closed, to provide me unbidden notifications of updates.

I need to stop this NOW, otherwise Microsoft can shove Windows 10 where the sun don't shine. I own this computer, not Microsoft. Can it be done? Or do I go back to Linux?

Disable Automatic Update From The STORE?

Jul 30, 2015

I'm aware that automatic updates via windows update cannot be disabled in windows 10 Home - does that apply to the store also.

In my Surface 3 (updated to win 10) the option to disable store updates automatically is greyed out with a message to contact my administrator (which is me!)

(I also have another win10 VM running pro where the option is not greyed out)

Two Accounts - How To Disable Automatic Login When Turn On PC

Aug 1, 2015

This is a thing that was also on 8.1 (that I hated a lot) and i couldnt remove. I have 2 accounts on my pc (home and my own account) and everytime i turn the pc on, the last account that was used logs in automatically (mine asks password actually, but the home's one doesn't, so it just logs in).

This is a thing i hate, since makes me waste time login out and login with the account i want to use. Is out there any option for disable that? In 8.1 that wasn't possible.

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Disable Automatic Driver / Device Installation

Aug 6, 2015

This is not exactly win 10 specific question, i had same problem in win 7, but now that i'm on win 10, that problem is still there. Here's what's going on:

I have high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 and 4k monitor and 1080p monitor as secondary.

4k Monitor is connected via DisplayPort and other monitor is using HDMI

Both of those monitors have built-in speakers (actually i don't think 1080p monitor has speakers)

But here's the problem, windows 10 keeps automatically installing HDMI audio drivers and 50% of the time when i boot my system, all my software defaults to the stupid HDMI sound.

This is extremely annoying and i'm about to pull my hair out over this. All my media players default to monitor audio, even tho windows does not select it as "default device".

Also even tho other monitor doesn't have speakers, system still thinks that the monitor has speakers and sets it as audio device.

Also when i record gameplays using shadowplay or other recorder, lot of times there's no audio on videos, because screen recorders also default to that dumb hdmi audio. I can't be bothered to check audio every time i do something.

I really need a way to tell windows 10 to STOP doing that. Here's what i've done so far:

1. under playback devices, i have DISABLED both of the monitors as playback devices.
2. I have tried uninstalling + disabling drivers for both monitors in "device manager"
3. i used local group policy to force windows not to install drivers (gpedit.msc > administrative templates > system > device installation), then i grabbed the group ID from device manager and entered it there to prevent windows from installing drivers for any audio groups.

After step 3, drivers were not installed, but windows still shows both monitors in "playback devices", only difference is that in device manager it says that this device does not have drivers installed, but they're still showing up in "playback devices", therefore all my software is STILL able to use them as playback and some of my software, like winamp, still defaults to them.

Forgot to mention, that if I disable both of them in playback devices, windows automatically re-enables them at some point. probably at boot, but i can't be bothered to check every few seconds, i just want windows to STOP trying to tell me what's best, i like my Asus STRIX 7.1 headset + 7.1 Hi-Fi home theater speaker system, i don't need some tiny jurassic stereo speakers lol.

I want to punch whoever made this feature. I mean .. what kind of an caveman would buy high-end gaming PC with GTX 980 + 4k monitor and NOT have a proper sound card + headset? Did those low-brainers in microsoft seriously think that anyone using high-end gaming PC, would like to use HDMI as primary audio? that's just ridiculous!

I think my only option is to force windows to think that i'm not using HDMI so it won't even detect my monitors as audio devices, is that possible.

Drivers/Hardware :: Disable / Remove Automatic Driver Install Via Windows Update?

Nov 10, 2015

Recently I was notified that a driver installation failed. I went and checked it out, and it was a driver for HD 4600 graphics. My old system ran an i7-4790K, and when I upgraded to X99 I did not reimage my SSD.

Is there a way I can remove an update from Windows Update? The CPU I have has no iGPU, let alone HD 4600.

Either Outlook stops working (Outlook not available try again later) or my Favorites bar disappears and has to be redefined, or like now, my Adobe is all sc.... up and I cannot delete adobe files or access my adobe files when I am travelling and off line. This Windows 10 is the worst mess I have ever seen in 61 years of IT/IS/Data Processing. My next PC will definitely be a MAC.
