Windows Won't Boot Or Repair Install

Nov 21, 2015

Windows won't boot, and it also won't repair install, refresh, reinstall (Windows 10), chkdsk, boot repair etc. I have tried all these so unless anyone can think of anything else I will have to do a clean install and upgrade. I suspect the hard drive has failed though.

Installation :: Cannot Install Windows Update And Install DVD Won't Boot (to Repair)

Nov 14, 2015

My computer is trying to install Update to Windows 10 Home, version 1511, 10586, but can't. It claims there is no system reserved partition, but there is. This computer was upgraded from Windows 7 to 10, and immediately after doing that I installed a Samsung SSD and migrated the system to it using the software that came with the SSD. The migration went well and I've been using Windows 10 for months.

All of a sudden, when trying to do some updates it claims it cannot update the system reserved partition. The partition is there, it's 100MB in size. So I tried booting from the install CD, which I burned to do the upgrade (so I know it's a good disc). My computer recognizes there's a disc in the DVD drive, but no matter how I set the bios boot order it will not boot from the DVD, so I can't do a repair on the SSD.

No Boot Up - Windows Repair Loop

Oct 30, 2015

I have a booting problem with my Windows 10, after having it for two months. Few days ago after turning my PC on, I had a message Starting Windows Repair, after some time it shows me the same screen with text - Diagnosing your PC. Then after having a black background, a light blue screen appears with error 'Your PC did not start correctly', it gives me options to restart it again or to open on Advanced options. There are so many of them, I tried all except the one with Restarting PC and deleting files, all the others, including Safe Mode won't work. I am stuck now here and can't use my PC.

Windows Boot Stuck At Repair Loop

Sep 8, 2015

I keep getting the "Automatic repair" at boot time and then it diagnoses and later it says it failed.

I've checked several forums now regarding this error, I've tred the following :

1. I tried setting the recoveryenabled to No in using bcdedit. No use.

2. Tried rebulding bcd, No use.

3. Tried resetting by choosing "keep my files" option{Because they are important and I've several programs installed which i don't want to lose).

4. I did chdsk on all drives.

5. Even though I've restore points, it says no restore points found.

Installation :: How To Repair SSD Install With No Driver For USB Repair

Apr 14, 2016

I have two Windows 10 installations on my PC. Primary and temp. The primary installation cannot boot with error "The boot configuration data file is missing some required information ".

This happened aftter I wiped out another third disk which was the PC's original disk and apparently kept some boot info.

I have a USB boot disk but that does not see my Primary Windows 10 installation because the drive is running a 950 pro m.2 ssd which there is no drivers for when booted in the USB.

So there is no way that I know of, to use the USB and run a boot repair option on Primary installation.

The other Temp installation can boot into windows 10 and it does see my Primary installation's partition ... but how do I repair Primary while booted in Temp ?

It is a UEFI pc.

Install With Windows 7 Using Different SSDs To Dual Boot

May 26, 2015

I want to purchase a copy of Windows 10 Pro. I currently own Windows 7 Ultimate. I do not want to lose Windows 7 Ultimate because I have games and other files that I am concerned will be incompatible with Windows 10 in the same way that they are incompatible with Windows 8.

My system specs:
Intel Core i7-4790K
Asus ROG Maximus VII HERO
Club3D R9 290
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
Western Digital Black 1TB WD1003FZEX
Asus DRW-24B1ST DVD-RW
G.Skill Trident X DDR3-1600 CL7

The 840 EVO has Windows 7 Ultimate installed on it. There are many basic programs installed to this drive, such as Microsoft Office, my Daemon Tools, Fraps, and other "mission-critical" things that I want to access quickly and reliably.

My mass storage drive is the Western Digital Black drive. All my games are stored there, as Steam has a folder it reads most of its games from. A few other large programs are stored there. It only has one partition.

What I've been thinking of doing is when Windows 10 comes out, I want to grab a 256GB Samsung SM951 M.2 drive for my Maximus VII Hero and install Windows 10 onto that. I'm hoping that way, I can access my games via either Windows 7 or Windows 10, so that if there's compatibility issues, I can boot to either Windows 7 or Windows 10 and not have to worry about being able to play my games. I don't really want to do the free upgrade path because I'm concerned that it will replace Windows 7. I don't want that.

I'm also wondering if I can still run the games on the WD Black from Windows 10 using Steam launching from the SM951, as I currently do with Windows 7 on the 840 EVO.

I'm pretty certain that I won't be able to access Microsoft Office, which is on the 840 EVO imbedded into Windows 7's Program files. Or will I?

Unable To Boot At All Or Repair

Feb 7, 2016

I found my laptop was stuck in some loop, it wasn't able to boot up and offered me to automatically repair it, however it doesn't solve anything and I've tried doing a full system reset to it however the same problem occurs still, it just doesn't boot and offers to restart and try to repair again or more options. I have tried different commands such as the SFC, CHKDSK, but got no where.

Laptop is Windows 10, Asus k501-U, i7 6500u, 12gb Ram, HDD 1tb + 16 gb SSD ...

When I do start up repair I got this message a few times: 'Start up repair couldn't repair your PC...

Log file: C:WINDOWSsytem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt

And when you do CHKDSK (I think) end error message is 'Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50'.

Installation :: Windows 7 OEM - Upgrade Then Clean Install Dual Boot

Sep 3, 2015

OK, I have Windows 7 OEM Version and want to upgrade to Windows 10 After I get Windows 10 Activated through the upgrade can I...

Clean install Windows 7 (with Original 7 key) and clean install Windows 10 (should automatically activate) to have a dual boot? Or is Microsoft going to block my activation saying you can't have both 7 and 10?

I have a different computer that has a OEM-Builders edition of Windows 7. I don't want Windows 10 on it right now as the software I need to run will not run on it but...

I want to upgrade to Windows 10 just to get the free upgrade and activate then revert back to Windows 7.

Later on down the road a year or so can I install Windows 10 with no problems activating it?

Automatic Repair Bad Boot Sequence

Aug 27, 2015

Yesterday my computer started up the automatic repair service when i turned it on. It attempts to diagnose the problem and fails. I've run chkdsk on both the boot and regular partitions of my install drive. I tried to repair using an install disk but it says it cant because my install drive is locked. I also tried resetting from within the recovery environment. When I did it got to 8% and then said it couldn't reset the os as it encounter a problem during the reset. I'm running Windows 10 off an SSD.

Repair Error - USB Boot From BIOS?

Oct 25, 2015

I turned on my PC and got a Windows 10 error saying my PC needed to be repaired. I can go into the BIOS menu but I don't know what option to choose to reinstall Windows 10. I have it downloaded from the official website on a memory stick but I am thinking of buying Windows 8.1 from Amazon cause I do not like Windows 10 and want the full version. I would go with Windows 7 but I don't know what is and isn't legit on Amazon. I do not want an OEM version since I may be upgrading my PC and will want to reinstall Windows if I have to once again.

Installation :: Clean Install Caused Repair Loop Error

May 30, 2015

Win 7 user here, wanting to dual boot with Windows 10 preview (on a different partition).

So I made a Win 10 usb boot disc, and it installed it fine. Played around with the new Windows for a few mins, whilst it downloaded an update, and after installing the update, it said it needs to restart, naturally. So I did.

However, since then, the PC keeps restarting, showing a Windows 10 logo, and below that is the text, "preparing automatic repair". Then it just resets, and goes in this endless loop.

Why is this happening, and how do I resolve it?

Indexing Options Vanished (after 10586 In Place Repair Install)

Dec 27, 2015

I don't use Windows search normally, but today had reason to look for Indexing Options in the CP. No sign. Yes, things are being indexed. Yes, the service is running.

So could I invoke Indexing Options some other way?

control.exe srchadmin.dll

- nothing.

Now when I looked for srchadmin.dll, I only found this in Windows.old. Really?

control.exe <path to windows.old...>srchadmin.dll opened indexing options.

is this dll missing a consequence of having done an in place upgrade install?

Drivers/Hardware :: Boot Manager Missing And System Repair Not Compatible

Sep 3, 2015

My situation is that after a recent issue with my user profile going "missing" (I think) I thought do, do you know what I'll just reset my system and start over. But windows 10 would not reset. Instead I grabbed the windows 7 disk to reset that later hoping to install windows 10.

I was having problems with my Kingston SSD so I installed it onto my HDD and later on tried to clone the HDD to the SSD and then format the HDD so the OS ran off the SSD. I have clone the 2 drives but haven't formatted the HDD. I tried booting the SSD but it comes up with the BOOTMGR IS MISSING! I find a solution which is to reset the bootmgr using the code "Bootrec.exe /rebuildcd" but I can type the command in due to not being able to access the system repair.

This system repair issue says that the disk is not compatible meaning I cannot enter to the other options to get to the Command Prompt.

After Reset Windows Needs To Repair Drive?

Oct 1, 2015

My friend's 2 day old Toshiba laptop started giving System Thread Exception Not Handled error, and went into a rebooting loop. I researched this on the web, but none of the usual fixes for this issue would work.

I decided to do a Reset, told it not to save any files.

It did the reset, counting up from 1% to 100% over the course of about 30 minutes, then went to a screen that said "scanning and repairing errors". That took about 15 minutes.

After the scanning and repairing, it went to a 3rd screen that only said "Installing Windows Your PC will restart several times". With a large percent counter in the middle that sat at 1% for about 10 minutes, then went to 2% and is sitting there right now, for about 5 minutes. Now it has moved up to 6%, been at that for about 5 minutes now. Below that in small letters it says "installing features and drivers" This seems odd because I thought it was doing that in the first step.

When I've reset computers in the past (those were Win 8) all I remember it doing was the first of these 3 steps, and then it rebooted and was done. Is this behavior normal in Win 10 or is there a problem here that we should consider returning this computer?

Installation :: Convert Dual Boot Install To Normal Boot

Jun 15, 2015

After several weeks of testing I'm ready to go full on Windows 10 and want to get rid of Windows 7 but I have some partitioning issues I want to clean up. I currently have Windows 7 on drive 0 (360 GB) and Windows 10 on drive 1 (500 GB). Both are SATA drives and RAID is enabled in the bios but not active.

What I think I'd like to do is simply swap the drives physically so that Drive 0 has my current Windows 10 install on it and make it primary boot active etc. The drive with Windows 7 on it would become drive 1 and I would delete the Windows 7 partition and re-partition it with a clean empty partition just for extra space.

Second question, any advantage to using this drive configuration in a RAID setup?

Possible To Install Laptop Hard Drive Into Desktop Then Move Windows Install To SSD?

Jan 15, 2016

I'm about to build my first desktop, and I have a laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from 7 which it came with). I don't plan on using the laptop anymore, so is it possible to install the laptop's hard drive into the desktop then move the Windows install to an SSD? If not, should I just buy a Win10 key or would it be possible to contact Microsoft about transferring the OS over?

Installation :: Can't Boot After Install

Oct 14, 2015

Im doing a clean install on a new SSD I just bought. The Samsung 850 EVO. I have a USB flash drive that I use to try to install Win 10 and I cannot get it to work. I get to the install screen and when it says it need to reboot it won't reboot back into the Windows installer. All I get is this when it reboots. (See attached picture) I have tried after the restart to boot into the SSD and the flash drive. I get the same message as mentioned before if I reboot into the SSD, and if I reboot into the Flash drive it just restarts the whole installation process. I also can see in the installation program that the OS has taken space up on the SSD even though I cannot boot from it.

Installation :: Won't Boot After Fresh Install

Feb 10, 2016

PC specs:
Gigabyte F2A88XM-D3H
AMD A8 APU
kingston v300 SSD 120gb
WD HDD 1tb

I recently built this system for a family member as a low budget media/gaming pc. This was originally setup with windows 10 on the 1tb main drive, so I know everything works. Now we decided to put an ssd in as a boot drive, and I cant seem to get it working.I wasn't able to clone the drive due to inconsistent sector sizes between the drives.

I've finally completed the install on the drive after many failed attempts but when I try to boot from it the message reads "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".
