Tables :: Possible To Have The Field Names In Table Be Set By Values In Another Table?

Jul 27, 2014

Is it possible to have the field names in a table be set by the values in another table? The desire being that for a database used in various locations, the local variations could be changed in one table which would then propagate that change throughout all the forms, reports, tables etc.

Tables :: Make Calculated Field In One Table That Calculates Values From Another Table Linked By Order ID

May 13, 2015

I have what is probably a stupid question but I've been struggling with this one for a while. I have an ordering database which has an Orders table (containing Order ID, Date, Supplier etc) and an Order Line table within which I have a combo box for Product name, supplier, price, VAT rate, Line price etc. At the moment, I have the order line table as a subform within the Order form (run from the Orders table). The problem I'm having is the subtotal and total fields. At the moment these are in the Order Line table as I cannot figure out how to get these in the Orders table. In summary, can I make a calculated field in one table that calculates values from another table (linked by Order ID)?

Query Searching Multiple Tables' Field Names (not Values)

Jan 22, 2007

Hi. Please do not lecture me on database normalization, as this truly is not in my control.

I have 2 dozen tables, each with 13 fields. All of the field names exist in at least 12 of the tables. And all tables share a ssn field where values are common.(Confused yet? Sorry, if you are...)

If I design a query showing all 2 dozen tables and their fields...
Can I set up a query criteria where I enter the requested ssn and then the required field name and have the result show the values of all the fields with that name, among the ones of the 2 dozen tables where that field name exists? (for that specified ssn)

If I am only as clear as mud, please let me know, and I will try again.
Or, by asking if I can search for field values querying by field name, am I any clearer?

Tables :: Auto-Calculate Field From Other Table Values

Aug 10, 2015

How to set up my tables as I'm just starting off with setting my database up.

I'm doing a simple database to track the purchase orders (PO) I am managing. Each PO has a PO Number and an Original Value. POs may have multiple amendments which would change the PO value. I would however like to keep the history of the PO original value and all different amendments.

So I created two tables:

tblPO:
ID
PO Number (Number)
PO Original Value (Currency)
PO Sum of Amendments (???????????)
PO Current Value (Calculated = PO Original - PO Sum of Amendments)

tblPOAmendments:
ID
PO (Lookup from tblPO)
PO Amended Value (Currency)
Amendment Date (Date/Time)
Amendment Desc (Text)

Now the two, million dollar questions are:
1.) Is this the right table structure to use.
2.) How do I go about calculating the Sum of Amendments field?

The visit to customer is done monthly in a year, which means that a customer can have 12 visits in a year. Tables :: Setting Primary Keys To More Than One Field In Table / But They Cannot Have Null Values

Nov 30, 2012

Access 2010..One organization that we work with provides us with a block of numbers for each of the two types of contract products we order from them; we do order non-contract stuff from them also.The block of numbers are the same (i.e. 20000 to 30000 this year) for each of the two products. This means that each product can have the number 20000, for example. We call this the Tracking Number. If it is one of these products, we need to select the Contract Number.

For all other one off orders we have with them, we assign our own Tracking Number starting with 00001. This Tracking Number cannot duplicate unless it is one of the aforementioned two products.Both the Tracking Number and Contract Number are in the same table. The user selects the Contract Number from a form (connected to the Contract Number table that has all the details on the contract) and the Contract Number is populated in the same table that has the Tracking Number.Each order must have a Tracking Number (no null)..Not all orders need a Contract Number (null okay).The Tracking Number and Contract Number combination cannot duplicate.I tried setting the primary keys to more than one field in the table, but they cannot have null values.

If not... I have been working on Plan B.... an AfterUpdate on the form (either the form or a field... don't know yet) that looks at a query that only has results if there are duplicate values.

Tables :: Preventing Names From Being Deleted From Table

Jun 11, 2014

I have an Access 10 DB that includes 299 names and other associated data relevant to these names. I have a need to drop 249 of these names that are no longer needed in the DB, and just keep the 50 names that would remain in the table.

If I am in the table is there any way to somehow "designate" or select the 50 names I want to keep and then just mass delete the other 249 in one fell swoop? If I can somehow sort the 50 names so they would appear as the first 50 names in the table, then I could simply delete all the names below.

But not sure how to make this happen. It would seem to be the simplest solution. Unless I can physically drag and drop each of the 50 names I want to keep to the top of the table, but I don't think this is possible.

Tables :: How To Alphabetize Column Names In A Table

Jul 31, 2014

My employer wants me to update and revise a form with almost a hundred controls. All of the information is stored in a single table.

Is there a way that I can (easily) sort the order of columns in the table to alphabetize them? I know how to sort and filter records, is there a way to sort the columns other than the manual click and drag solution?

Note: I know that the database I'm working on for this project is not normalized. My employer isn't concerned with normalization. I've made as many corrections to the table as possible, already, but some things just won't be fixed.

Tables :: Changing Linked Table Names

Mar 3, 2015

I need to update the names of my ODBC linked tables in my Access database, how can I do this without causing issues with my queries/reports?The current linked tables are to a SQL View on a database called mcsrm_live, and called e.g. vwDamagesReportNew

The new SQL views that I need to link to are identical in structure and content and on the same SQL server but different database - forkdw and are called e.g vw_R_Damages

Is there a straightforward process to do this without affecting the queries and reports in my Access db?

Tables :: Merging Table Data Fields If Names Are Identical

...TableB: 1 indexed field "Name" and 2 data fields (DataB1 and DataB2) in about
~ 50 records

Tables currently have NO relationship set.

Want to add TableB data fields to TableA if Name are identical.

DataB1 and DataB2 fields are Not currently in TableA but could be added very easily.

Update (or whatever) will be done weekly where all previous data for DataB1 and DataB2 will be cleared from TableA before job is run.

Print A List Of Table Field Names

Dec 20, 2005

Just a quickie- i hope. :rolleyes:

I am in the process of trying to merge two large databases. I have four tables that really should be one to work in the new DB. I just need to be able to print a list of fields in each table so that I can work on the new combined structure before making the changes. I know I can use the documenter but this produces a very comprehensive list which is much more than I need.
Is there anyway of producing a similar list without the detail, just showing the field names.

Thanks

Modules & VBA :: Restrict Value In Lookup Field To Only Include Values From Table B Not In Table A?

Feb 2, 2014

I have a database that has 2 tables. Table A and Table B. Table A is my primary table. On this table I have 2 fields. The first field is a LOOKUP Field that looks up information from Table B and displays my selection in the field on Table A. Then using DLOOKUP I automatically input the information in the Second Field on Table A based upon the selection from the First Field.

This is working mostly correctly. However, the problem is, when I click on the next record in the table, it automatically changes the Second Field on that record to the same value as the record before it and continues this trend each time I click on another record. This occurs without me making a selection in the first field. If I make a selection in the first field it does change the Second Field to the Correct Value, but then the next Record has the same issue.

How do I go about fixing this so it doesn't change the value with the change of the record. Only change if I change that particular field within that 1 record?is there a way to restrict the Value's in my lookup field to only include the Values from Table B that aren't already in Table A?

Using Variables In A Form To Reference Table Field Names

May 24, 2006

I am working on an form (using Access 2000 and VBA) that stores registration information, along with events that were attending, in a table and later retrieves that same information from the table to display the regist. info, events attended, and allows the user to change any current info along with adding new/recently attended events to each record.
I am currently allowing a max of six events, along with event details, to be stored and I am running through six different if statements to match the Event_List (name of the combo box that contains "Event 1 Event 2...Event 6") to the appropreiate information in the table. I have started to simplify the code to remove the redundancy by running a Do While to to find the correct Event by using an integer variable that starts at 1 and is incremented until it matches the 7th character (the number portion) of the Event chosen from the Event_List. After this I want to use that integer variable to say what event information in the table to gather. My problem is this: I have tried many different varieties of the following code and I am unable to make it work. I had never used Access up until a week and a half ago, and a few days ago I went and bought the book "Access VBA Programming for Dummies" but it doesn't help for this problem. Here's part of the code:

Variables (Event_Name, PMT, Receipt, Payment_Type, PIF) refer to Form textboxes while the variables in the [] refer to table field names.

'------Code I'm Currently Working On-------
Dim intX As Integer
Dim EventVal As Integer
Dim strX As String

intX = 1
EventVal = Val(Mid(Event_List, 7, 1))
Do While EventVal <> intX And intX < 6
intX = intX + 1
Loop

strX = str(intX)
Dim E_Name As String
Event_Name = [Event strX ]
PMT = [PMT strX]
Receipt = [Receipt strX]
Payment_Type = [Payment Type strX]
PIF = [Paid In Full strX]

'-----Old Code That I'm trying to simplify-------
If Event_List = "Event 1" Then
Event_Name = [Event 1]
PMT = [PMT 1]
Receipt = [Receipt 1]
Payment_Type = [Payment Type 1]
PIF = [Paid In Full 1]
Camp_Site = [Camp Site 1]
Cabin_Number = [Cabin Number 1]
ElseIf Event_List = "Event 2" Then
Event_Name = [Event 2]
PMT = [PMT 2]
Receipt = [Receipt 2]
Payment_Type = [Payment Type 2]
PIF = [Paid In Full 2]
Camp_Site = [Camp Site 2]
Cabin_Number = [Cabin Number 2]
ElseIf Event_List = "Event 3" Then
Event_Name = [Event 3]
PMT = [PMT 3]
Receipt = [Receipt 3]
Payment_Type = [Payment Type 3]
PIF = [Paid In Full 3]
Camp_Site = [Camp Site 3]
Cabin_Number = [Cabin Number 3]

Queries :: Calculation Based On Values Selected In Table By Looking Up Corresponding Values In Other Tables

Aug 29, 2014

I'm using Access 2010. I need to calculate a score based on values selected in a table by looking up corresponding values in other tables. I have a "Project" form to create new entries into the Project table (see Table 1). When I create a new project record, I will select values for the Payback and Need fields by selecting options from a list. The Payback list is pointed at Table 2 and the Need list is pointed at Table 3. In the below example, I created the "ABC" project and selected "1 year" for the Payback field and "Repair" for the Need field. Pretty simple.

Now that I have the "ABC" project loaded to my Project table, I'd like to create a report that will show a "score" for this project. The score should be calculated as follows: Payback Impact + Need Impact. In this example, the score should be 30 (Payback Impact of 20 + Need Impact of 10).
