Dynamic OLE DB Table Source From Variable Not Seeing Input Columns

Dec 12, 2007

I am building an SSIS package that loops through a table in SQL Server and dynamically builds a select statement that i would like to use as an ole db source. I have been having a difficult time with this as the select statement that i am generating is over 200,000 characters long so using an sql variable is out of the question.

I ended up placing the select statement into a table where each row of the table represents a piece of the select. I then use an execute_sql task that selects the entire rowset from this table into a variable object. I then use a for each loop to shred the variable and concatenate it into on big string variable called user:: sql_statement that is my select.

After setting up the loop and testing to see if the user:: sql_statement variable populates correctly i then added a data flow transfer with an ole db source and destination. I then go into the advanced editor for the source and set it to accept an sql statement from a variable and use my user:: sql_statement variable. I was forced to set validate external metadata option to false to avoid an error since there is no way to validate the columns until the for each loop runs during run time.

Now thats all fine and good but what is causing my problem is that during run time, when the package gets to the data flow task, the select statement doesn't seem to be populating the input columns of the data source. I have been searching to no avail on a way to tell the data source to update the input columns but every time it gets there, the package bombs out telling me the ole db source has no available output columns.

Specifically the error i get is :
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: "output "OLE DB Source Output" (6616)" contains no output columns. An asynchronous output must contain output columns.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

1 SP With Dynamic Input Parameters And Multiple Rows As The Source Of The Query

Dec 4, 2005

How can I run a single SP by asking multiple sales question eitherby using the logical operator AND for all the questions; or usingthe logical operator OR for all the questions. So it's alwayseither AND or OR but never mixed together.We can use Northwind database for my question, it is very similarto the structure of the problem on the database I am working on.IF(SELECT OBJECT_ID('REPORT')) IS NOT NULLDROP TABLE REPORT_SELECTIONGOCREATE TABLE REPORT_SELECTION(AUTOID INT IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL,REPSELNO INT NOT NULL, -- Idenitifies which report query this-- "sales question" is part ofSupplierID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Suppliers tableProductID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Products table, if you choose--a ProductID, SupplierID is selected also by inheritenceCategoryID INT NOT NULL, -- from the Categories tableSOLDDFROM DATETIME NULL, -- Sold from which dateSOLDTO DATETIME NULL, -- Sold to which dateMINSALES INT NOT NULL, -- The minimum amount of salesMAXSALES INT NOT NULL, -- The maximum amount of salesOPERATOR TINYINT NOT NULL -- 1 is logical operator AND, 2 is OR)GOINSERT INTO REPORT_SELECTIONSELECT 1, 1, 2, 1, '1/1/1996', '1/1/2000', 10, 10000, 1 UNION ALLSELECT 1, -1, -1, 1, '1/1/1996', '1/1/2000', 10, 1000, 1You can ask all kinds of sales questions like:1-I want all employees that sold products from supplierID 1(Exotic Liquids), specifically the ProductID 2 (Chang) from theCategoryID 1 (Beverages) between Jan 1 1996 to Jan 1 2000 and soldbetween $10 and $10000 - AND for my 2nd sales question2-I want all employees that sold CategoryID 1 (beverages) betweenJan 1 1996 to Jan 1 2000 and sold between $10 and $1000I want to get the common result of both questions and find outwhich employee(s) are in this list.Here are some of the points:1-I want my query to return the list of employees fitting theresult of my sales question(s).2-If I ask three questions with the logical operator AND, I wantthe list of employees that are common to all three questions.3-If I ask 2-3-4. questions with the logical operator OR, I wantthe list of employees that are in the list of the 1st "successful"sales question (the first question that returns any employee isgood enough)4-You can ask all kind of sales question you want even if theycontradict each other. The SP should still run and returnnothing if that is the case.5-Let's assume you can have the same product name from the samesupplier but under different categories. So entering a ProductIDshould not automatically enter the CategoryID also; whereasentering the ProductID should automatically enter its SupplierID.6-SOLDFROM, SOLDTO, MINSALES, MAXSALES, OPERATOR are mandatoryfields, you can't leave them NULL7-SupplierID, ProductID and CategoryID are the dynamic inputparameters, there can be 5 different combinations to choose from:a-SupplierID onlyb-SupplierID and a ProductID,c-SupplierID and a CategoryIDd-SupplierID, ProductID and a CategoryIDe-CategoryID onlyf-Any time you choose a ProductID, the SupplierID valuewill be filled automatically based on the ProductID'srelationshipg-Any of the three values here that is not chosen by theuser will take a default value of -1 (meaning return ALLfor this Column, in other words don't filter by this column)The major problem I have is I can't use dynamic SQL for choosingthe three dynamic columns as the 2nd row of records would have adifferent selection of dynamic columns (at least I don't know howif the solution is dynamic SQL). The only solution I can think oflooks pretty bad to me. I would use a cursor, run each row at atime, store a TRUE, FALSE value to stop processing or not andstore the result in another detail table. Then if all ANDquestions have ended with TRUE do a union of all the result andreturn the common list of employees. It sounds pretty awful as anapproach. I am hoping there's a simpler method for achieving this.Does anyone know if any SQL book has a topic on this type ofquery? If so I'll definitely buy the book.I appreciate any help you can provide.Thank you

Variable Number Of Input Columns

May 2, 2007

We are trying to use the Import/export wizard to load a text file to a SQL Server 2005 database. The input file has a variable number of columns per row. For example, the first row has 3 columns, the second has 7, the third has 3, etc. The number of columns varies from 2 to 9 in the input file. The columns are separated by an uptick (`) and the rows are terminated by {CR}{LF}. We are using code page 1252. On processing, the wizard reads the first row (with 3 columns) ok, but then assumes all the other rows have 3 columns and parses the rows accordingly, ignoring the field and row terminators.

The process worked fine with SQL Server 2000. Is there some setting that we are missing, or some configuration on the database that we should be checking?

Thank You

Flat File Data Source With Variable Number Of Delimited Columns

Feb 26, 2007

I am writing a package that will process delimited flat files that will come in one of a few different versions. Within each flat file, the number of delimited columns will be the same, but each version of the file has a different number of columns. I have tried configuring the flat file data source to expect the version with the largest number of columns, but it will then throw away rows that have less than this number of columns (warning: There is a partial row at the end of the file).

Is it possible to use a single flat file data source that will work with all of the different width files?

How To Use A Table Variable With Dynamic SQL

May 8, 2008

Hi,

I've a roblem with table variables in dynamic sql context.

If i use it with normal sql there is of course no problem.
Simplified it looks like this:

-- Standard SQL ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DECLARE @TestTable as TABLE(MyBigInt bigint NOT NULL, Myint int NOT NULL);

INSERT @TestTable SELECT 4711,10

SELECT* FROM @TestTable
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If i do the same thing in dynamic sql, i get errors.

-- Dynamic SQL ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @DynamicTestTable as Table(MyBigInt bigint NOT NULL, Myint int NOT NULL);

DECLARE @SQLString as nvarchar(max), @Parameters as nvarchar(2000);

SET @Parameters = N'@DynamicTestTableOUT as Table(MyBigInt bigint NOT NULL, Myint int NOT NULL) OUTPUT';

SET @SQLString= N'INSERT @DynamicTestTableOUT SELECT 4711,10';

EXECUTE sp_executesql @SQLString, @Parameters, @DynamicTestTableOUT = @DynamicTestTable OUTPUT ;

SELECT* FROM @DynamicTestTable;
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is wrong with tis code? Or are table variables not supported inside dynamic SQL?

Thanks in advance
Raimund

OLE DB Source Using Table Name Variable

Jan 22, 2007

I have a package-level variable [User::viewName], type = string, containing a view name. I want to setup an OLE DB source to use this variable value as the source, so Data access mode = "Table name or view name variable". The Variable name dropdown contains [User:viewName], so I select it. When I click OK to leave the edit dialog I get the error:

The variable User::viewName is required to be of type "VT_BSTR".

Only variables of type String occur in the Variable name dropdown; if I try changing it to a type other than string it doesn't occur in the dropdown. What is VT_BSTR and how can I change the variable type to it?

Dynamic Source Table For SSIS Package

Oct 20, 2007

I have created an SSIS package that is designed to move data from SQL Server 2000 to an Access db. I have set the package up to accept four parameters. They are:

the name of the SQL Server Database, which is used in an expression to provide the source connection manager connection string;

the full path to the Access db destination database which is used like #1 above.

the SELECT statement used in an OLE DB Source object to get the data from the source table

the table name which is used by an OLE DB Destination object.
I know that the source and destination tables have exactly the same structure and do not require a transformation.

In order to change variables 3 and 4 from above and have it work, I go through the following steps:

I change the variables to appropriate values.

Go to the Advanced Editor for the OLE DB Source object and click on "Refresh". This produces an error in the OLE DB Destination object that is something like "Validation error. Data Flow Task: DTS.Pipeline: input column "strRECTYPESUFFIX" (301) has lineage ID 17 that was not previously used in the Data Flow task.

Go to the Advanced Editor for the OLE DB Destination which brings up the "Restore Invalid Column Reference Editor". I mark all the columns that show up with the option to <Delete invalid column reference> and click OK

I then reopen the Advanced Editor for the OLE DB Destination, go to the 'Column Mappings' tab click 'Refresh', then in the upper pane where the input and output columns list appear I right click and choose "Map Items by Matching Names"
At this point I no longer have the error and the package will execute without any problems.

I am doing this so that I can load the SSIS package in VB.NET (2.0) so that I can then set these variables programmatically and then execute the package. The problem is that this actually performs steps 1 and 4 above. 2 and 3 are left out and the package fails miserably.

I have found some information that would be helpful if I could get my hands on the appropriate object. I realize that the data flow component would return VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA from the Validate method, and that could be repaired with the ReinitializeMetaData method of the data flow component ( I assume that is the object to be using in this case). But I do not know how to grab the "Data Flow Component" as an object based upon the "Package" object I have loaded so that I can check if it is valid and manipulate it if necessary.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Loading Data Using Ole Db Source With Input Source Being A View

Dec 13, 2007

I was trying to load data using SSIS, Data Flow Task, OLE DB Source, source was a view to a OLE DB Destination (SQL Server). This view returns 420,591 rows from Query Analyzer in 21 seconds. Row length is 925. When I try to executed the Data Flow Task from SSIS, I had to stop the process after 30 minutes, because only 2,000 rows had been retrieved. I modified the view to retun top 440, 000 and reran. This time all 420, 591 rows were retrieved and written in 22 seconds. Next, I tried to use a TOP 100 Percent. Again, only 2,000 rows were return after 30 minutes. TempDB is on a separate SAN Raid group with 200 gig free, Databases on a separate drive with 200 gig free. Server has 13 gig of memory and no other processes were executing.

The only way I could populate the table was by using an Execute SQL Task and hard code an Insert into table selecting data from the view (35 seconds) from SSIS.

Have anyone else experience this or a similar issue? Anyone have a solutionexplanation?

Dynamic SQL Return Table Variable

Nov 2, 2007

Is it possible in SQL 2000 to return a table variable from dynamic sql? We need to have some code that looks kind of like this:

declare @qry varchar(8000)
declare @sourcetable varchar(100) -- name of source table
declare @mytable table (ID_Num int identity(1,1), Child_Key varchar(100))

set @sourcetable = (select tablename from tblConfig where app = 1)

set @qry = 'insert into @mytable

select * from @sourcetable'

execute (@qry)

if (select count(*) from @mytable) > 0
begin

'insert into myFinalTable

select * from @mytable where blah blah blah

I can get the first part to work by declaring the table variable (mytable) in the dynamic sql, but I can't figure out how to return the table object.

String / Variable Problem - Dynamic Table Name

Jul 20, 2005

HiI'm grateful for any light you can shed on this!!I've to admit, it's an unusual design but I've multiple contact tables namede.g. i2b_ash_contact or i2b_ted_contact.'i2b_' and '_contact' are static but the middle part is dynamic.Storing all contacts in one table with an identifier of e.g. 'ash' or 'ted'for each record is not possible.Returning the value from the dynamic Query is no problem but I don't knowhow to assign it to a variable.When I try doing this it either runs into problems with evaluating thevariables or doesn't retuen anything at all e.g. if I say at the end 'Print@AddressID'. The variable remains empty.How can I do something like:DECLARE@AddressID int,@ProgClient (varchar(10),@Table varchar(10)Note: @Prog is a string e.g. 'ash' or 'ted'SET @Table = 'i2b_ + @ProgClient + '_contactSET @AddressID = (SELECT AddressID FROM @Table WHERE ContactID = @ContactID)

Help With A Pivot Table (dynamic Columns)

Feb 15, 2008

I have the following Pivot Table:

Code Snippet
Declare @tblEquipment Table

Declare @tblEquipmentFields Table
(
numFieldNameID INT,

Declare @tblEquipmentDetails Table

Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(23, 'Dell', 'Optiplex 270')
Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(26, 'Dell', '1705FP')
Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(42, 'Dell', 'Optiples 745')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentFields Values(1, 'Monitor Size')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentFields Values(2, 'Processor Type')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1077, 23, 2, 'P4M')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1146, 26, 1, '17')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1026, 42, 2, 'P4 Dual Core')
Select numEquipmentID As EquipmentID, [Monitor Size], [Processor Type]
From
(Select a.numEquipmentID, txtManufacturer, txtModel, txtFieldName, txtFieldValue
From @tblEquipment a JOIN
@tblEquipmentDetails b ON
a.numEquipmentID = b.numEquipmentID
JOIN @tblEquipmentFields c ON
b.numFieldNameID = c.numFieldNameID
) As SourceTable
Pivot
(
Max(txtFieldValue)
For txtFieldName IN ([Monitor Size], [Processor Type])
) As PivotTable

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to have the columns change dynamically. For example:

If lets say I only want the record with numEquipmentID of 23 to show I only want its corresponding information to show

EquipmentID ProcessorType
23 P4M

Now lets say that I want to bring back an additional record, like 23 and 26 I would like the columns to change to the following

EquipmentID ProcessorType Monitor Size
23 P4M NULL
26 NULL 17

So in essence a column will be added based on the equipmentID. Thanks in advanced.

This has to be dynamic, because each FranchiseID can have anywhere from 1 to 12 respective owners and those can be any combination of of Entity and Individual. Please, see the attached example for Franchise Number 129 (that one would have 6 additional columns because there are 3 Individual owners with 1 respective Percentage of ownership).

The question is how do I PIVOT and preserve the percentage of ownership?

XML TASK XSL Variable: Exception 'Property New Source Has No Source Xml Text'

Dec 20, 2005

Hi,
I want to transform an xml flow to an html flow. For this, I create an XmlDataDocument, I add on it, all that I want, and I store it in a file (in a dataflow task).
After that, in an xml task, I set the input properties like that:
Operation type: xslt
SourceType: File connection
Source: ras.xml

All works fine. But now, I want to use a variable to store my xml data. So, instead of storing my data in ras.xml, I store it in a variable like that:

Dim v As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSVariables90
Me.VariableDispenser.LockOneForWrite("RAS", v)
v("RAS").Value = doc.OuterXml
v.Unlock()

and in the xml task, I set configuration like that:

Operation type: xslt
SourceType: Variable
Source: user::RAS

But when I execute, I got this following exception:

Error: 0xC002F304 at Format HTML Mail, XML Task: An error occurred with the following error message: "Root element is missing.".
Error: 0xC002928F at Format HTML Mail, XML Task: Property "New Source" has no source Xml text; Xml Text is either invalid, null or empty string.

Furthermore, when I want to debug it, in replacing the xml task, by a script task, I can see that in my RAS variable, I get the xml data which is well formed.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root> €¦
</root>

(When I store it in a file, I can see it in IE)

Have you got an idea ?

1 server1

2 server2

....

15 server15

I want to display the servernames in a report so that you get 3 columns - eg

server1 | server2 | server3

server4 | server5 | server6

...

server13 | server14 | server15

I have tried using multiple tables and lists and filtering the data on each one but this then makes formating very hard - i either end up with a huge gap between columns or the columns overlap

I have also tried using a matrix control but cant find a way to do this.

Does anybody know an easy way to do this? The data comes from sql 2005 so i can use a pivot clause on the dataset if somebody knows a way to do it this way. The reporting service is also RS2005

Thanks

Anthony

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: How To Add Inline TVF With Dynamic Columns From CRL Dynamic Pivot

Mar 9, 2015

I have tried building an Inline TVF, as I assume this is how it would be used on the DB; however, I am receiving the following error on my code, I must be missing a step somewhere, as I've never done this before. I'm lost on how to implement this clr function on my db?
