Ok, hopefully a simple issue with a simple fix. I'm importing data from an Excel spreadsheet with values such as: 10, 20, 20 Tall, 40, 40 Tall. The column imports but is treated as numeric with values 10, 20, 20, 40, 40. I set the cells to be treated as text in Excel. Any suggestions?
I am trying to use the Bulk Insert Task to load from a csv file. My final column is a bit that is nullable. My file is an ID column that is int, a date column that is mm/dd/yyy, then 20 columns that are real, and a final column that is bit. I've tried various combinations of codepage and datafiletype on my task component. When I have RAW with Char, I get the error included below. If I change to RAW/Native or codepage 1252, I don't have an issue with the bit; however, errors start generating on the ID and date columns.
I have tried various data type settings on my flat file connection, too. I have tried DT_BOOL and the integer datatypes. Nothing seems to work.
I hope someone can help me work through this.
Thanks in advance,
SK

l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.
I have an Excel file (complete with headers) that I am wanting to import (append) to an existing SQL tables When I use the file import wizard with my version 8 Microsoft SQL server software,I get the following error: "Destination does not allow NULL on column pair 1 (source column 'CheckRef (DBTYPE_R8), destination column 'CheckRef (DBTYPE_I4)). Obviously, the import fails.
What date type (in Excel) produces the I4 data type needed by the SQL table? I looked at the SQL table properties and that particular field calls for the data type "int" and the size is 4. I assume that is an integer. I have already made the data type in the Excel file cells for that data a number with NO decimal or zeros.
Can someone help me make this work?
Thank you very much. Your help is greatly appreciated. Mike
I'm new to SQL and DTS packages. I am trying to import data from an excel spreadsheet to an SQL server table via DTS package. It seems that the excel task looks at the first few records in a column to determine the datatype for that column. If the first few records are text, the entire column is imported as text. If numeric, the entire column is imported as numeric. There are about 25,000 records. In one field, the most important one, about half of the records begin with letters and the rest are all numbers. It is the subscriber ID field, and some subscriber IDs are all numbers, some are letters and numbers. The entire column should be imported as text. However, when I run the transform data task from the excel connection, none of the records that are all numbers are imported. I end up correctly importing only 13,000 of the 25,000 records. The rest are imported with the subscriberID field as <NULL>. I tried using the CAST or CONVERT function in the SQL query, but get the error message "Undefined Function."
I have a task that uses an Excel connection manager to read in an Excel file. In the file there are 6 date columns. The date columns can have either a date or the letters NA. If I look at the External Column properties from the advanced tab, 4 of the date columns have a datatype of DT_DATE. The other 2 date columns have a datatype of DT_WSTR. The 4 columns with DT_DATE, my data looks okay as when it is read by the connection manager. The issue is that the 2 columns that are DT_WSTR, all dates are turned into NULLS, while the NA's are just fine. I have tried to change the datatypes in the advanced tab to DT_DATE, but it won't work.
I don't have any idea what to do to get this working correctly. Can anyone PLEASE provide some insight and suggestions or a solution?
I have a package that reads a table for a file path of a excel file. This gets passed to a variable and then this file is imported into a staging table for further transformation work. The issue i have is that file 1 may contain data in Column A which is 50 characters long in which case i have to import the excel as a DT_WSTR, do a data conversion to a DT_STR and load to the staging table. However file 2 may contain data in Column which is over 255 characters in which case it would import as a DT_NTEXT which i then transform to a DT_TEXT and then to a DT_STR. I used a fixed file path in the Excel Connection to start with which was for File 1 so the datatype for column 1 is a DT_WSTR. I then changed the excel connection to a filepath variable, put the path of file 2 in my table and called it from my package. It failed as the data exceeding 255 characters in column 1 needed to be a DT_NTEXT. I can change it and it works but if i then run the package using file 1 (less than 255 characters) it fails again as it wants it to be a DT_WSTR.
Is there anyway around this? Am i missing something as i would have thought that by setting it to DT_NTEXT this would cover data under 255 characters as well.

This is an easy one , I need to know the way to check programatically for an SQL server 2000 column data type , if the result is a code , which codes are for the diferent datatypes ( varchar , text , smallint , etc ) , if you send me an url is ok.
Hi, I'm trying to figure out the best way to determine the data_type of a column, given the table name and column name. Once I've determined it's a charactor string I can get the length using COL_LENGTH, but I can't fund a command or procedure that will return the data type.
How do I programatically change a column (say username) in a table (say tblusers) from varchar(25) to varchar(100)I am looking for something likealter tblusers set username as varchar(100) I know the above statement in nonsensical but it conveys the idea.

In a stored proc, can you declare a local variable that is an existing column in a table & then based on other criteria, do an order by using the local variable?
Does anyone know how to determine the base datatype of a column? I've tried using sp_columns but if there are user defined datatypes on the column it returns that name instead of the base datatype. I've also tries accessing systypes and syscolumns to determine the base datatypes.

I want to create a table. One of the columns should be in the data type MONEY with two digits on the right side of the decimal point. How is that possible?
How would I best go about changing a published table's column from smallint to int? I could not find anything about it in BOL or MS.com. I do not think EM/Replication Properties allows the change. I suspect I have to run "Alter Table/Column" on the Publisher and each Subscriber the old-fashioned way. Is that true?
I am using SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition fully patched. Database is in Simple Recovery mode.
I need to change a column's data type from "int(4)" to "smallint(2)". I know for sure that there will be no data (precision) lost, because I know the possible values that this column could have.
My problem is that the table I am dealing with has 600,000,000 records in it. I dropped all indexes before I tried to alter the table. But still it is taking forever and filling up my 280GB disk with transaction log file.
I know that in Oracle, if I want I can turn off logging and do these kind of modifications relatively faster.
I was wondering if there is a way of disabling logging before running this alter command.
What is the best practice to handle a situation of this sort?
Hello Everyone,A have a Managed Stored Procedure ([Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlProcedure]). In it I would like to call a UserDefinedFunction:public static SqlInt32 IsGetSqlInt32Null(SqlDataReader dr, Int32 index) { if(dr.GetSqlValue(index) == null) return SqlInt32.Null; else return dr.GetSqlInt32(index) }I than allways get the following ErrorMessage:Column, parameter, or variable #1: Cannot find data type SqlDatareader. Is it not possibel to pass the SqlDatareader to a SqlFunction, do the reading there and return the result. My original Problem is, that datareader.GetSqlInt32(3) throws an error in case there is Null in the DB. I thought SqlInt32 would allow Null.Would appreciate any kind of help! Thanks
Hi, I have a webform with a drop-down listbox, binded to a table and a GridView, binded to another table. My goal is when I select a value (country in my case) in the drop-down listbox to change what is shown in the GridView, based on the ID that I get from the drop-down listbox. Here is the code (the important parts...): Select a Country : <asp:DropDownList ID="CountriesDropDownList" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource2" DataTextField="Name" DataValueField="CountryID" Width="220px" AutoPostBack="True"> </asp:DropDownList> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyConnectionString %>" SelectCommand="SELECT [CountryID], [Name] FROM [DS_Country]"> </asp:SqlDataSource> <asp:GridView ID="ProvincesGridView" runat="server" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="ProvinceID,CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" BackColor="White" BorderColor="#E7E7FF" BorderStyle="None" BorderWidth="1px" CellPadding="3" HorizontalAlign="Left" > <Columns> .............................. </Columns> </asp:GridView> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:DineSelectConnectionString %>" DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM DS_Province WHERE ProvinceID=@ProvinceID" SelectCommand="SELECT ProvinceID,CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description FROM DS_Province WHERE CountryID=@ddlCountryID" UpdateCommand="UPDATE DS_Province SET CountryID=@CountryID,Name=@Name,ShortName=@ShortName,Description=@Description WHERE ProvinceID=@ddlCountryID" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO DS_Province (CountryID,Name,ShortName,Description) VALUES (@CountryID,@Name,@ShortName,@Description)"> <SelectParameters> <asp:ControlParameter Name="ddlCountryID" ControlID="CountriesDropDownList" PropertyName="DataValueField" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource>
When I run it I get this error "Syntax error converting the nvarchar value 'CountryID' to a column of data type int.". If I specify the Type="Int" in <asp:ControlParameter>..</> I get "Input string was not in a correct format. " This is supposed to be easy, but I can't make it work ! Any suggestions will be more than welcome. Thanks.
