I installed SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 and have discovered that the ASPNET machine account was not added as a user when going into "Computer Management". I obviously need this to run ASP.net apps. I tried going to the Administrators group to add user ASPNET, but the system can't find this user. How can I install the ASPNET account?
I seem to remember that when using VS2003 to create a website which connected to a MSDE database, I needed to explicitly grant access to the database for ASPNET machine account using the following SQL commands from within a .sql script: EXEC sp_grantlogin '<machine>ASPNET'EXEC sp_grantdbaccess '<machine>ASPNET' With VS2005, it sppears that upon creating an .MDF database in the App_Data folder this is no longer necessary. I'd be interested to know why this is so. Does VS2005 automatically do this when the database is created? If anybody could shed some light on this I'd be interested. Thanks,Wayne.
VS2005Hi If I run the below code (this simply connects to SQL Server and returns the user name the connection is made under): Dim Connection As New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("LocalSqlServer").ToString)
Dim AttCommand As New SqlCommand("SELECT System_USER", Connection)
Connection.Open() Dim AttendanceReader As SqlDataReader = AttCommand.ExecuteReader
AttendanceReader.Read()
Debug.Print(AttendanceReader.Item(0).ToString)I get: MyDomainpootle.flump Which is the account I am running on the dev machine. I expected ASP.Net to run as ASPNET irrespective of the currently logged in account. Am I plain wrong? Do I need to change something in IIS? Do I need to change something in ASP.Net? Any help greatly appreciated Thanks
can anyone give me step by step instructions as to how I would go about correctly granting the aspnet account access to my sql server 2005 database ?? As far as I can see Ive set it up, but im getting execute permissions errors on stored procedures even though Ive gone into properties and permissions and added the aspnet account with execute permissions.
When I try to access my PasswordRecovery.aspx page I get an error. I've also added the Event Warning and the Failure Audit. I've tried deleting the ASPNET user account and recreating it using aspnet_regiis.exe. I still get the same error message. Should I add the ASPNET account to the Administrators group? Currently it is with the Users group. Login failed for user 'PC325862970629ASPNET'.

I'm creating one of my first asp.net pages, and it accesses an MS SQL database. It runs fine locally, but if you go to it remotely through a web browser, you get an exception saying that the database login failed for user ASPNET.My brother told me to do the following in SQL Server Managment studio. It seems I don't have that program installed, so I did it from the SQL command prompt.CREATE LOGIN [bigblueASPNET] FROM WINDOWSuse AdventureWorkscreate user [bigblueASPNET](Where "bigblue" is the computer name and "AdventureWorks" is the database my asp.net web page reads from). This only partially fixed the problem - now when you open the page remotely and try to access the DB I get an error message saying that permission to use the SELECT command is denied.I searched on these forums, and found this:http://forums.asp.net/69166/ShowPost.aspxFor future reference, let's call what my brother told me "Method 1" and what the previous poster did as "Method 2."I haven't tried method 2 because I don't know exactly what I am giving ASPNET permission to do. Does method 2 enable ASPNET to do anything to any database? It seems method 1 is more secure, as from the commands I could already tell it only has permission to access AdventureWorks. So, I'd prefer to use method 1. Can anyone tell me what further commands I can use to give ASPNET permission to do specific actions? If I can't figure out method 1 and have to do method 2, how can I undo what I did in method 1?Thanks!
Ran a trace using profiler and found that the CLR is not using the ASPNET windows account to log into SQL 2005, instead using the admin. Some ado.net code does not work properly as a result. Have had to change the connection string to use SQL logins.Spec: Win XP Pro; IIS 5; 2.0.Is this normal? Where security and permissions are concerned, what changes, if any, are there from SQL 2000?
Hi, I have a test database and need to to include the aspnet.mdf into my database. I have generated a script for the aspnet.mdf, but don't know how to run/include this into my own test database. 1. Is there any magical sql-command that do the job in a clean way for me? 2. How can I change the name of aspnet in that auto generated script, if needed at all? I have: SQL server Express Edition 2005, Visual Web Developer Express Edition 2008
I have my normal SQL 2005 database....and another database (on the same machine) that is the default aspnet database. I use that for authentication of course. Everything is working well except now I need to (for a SP I'm creating) access the UserID field in the Users table (without the customer logged in). I know this isn't the best way to do it but....Can someone tell me how to programatically (from an existing SP) access the aspnet database? So I can just check something against the UserID (providerkey) I already have? The customer isn't logged in at this point. I have their UserID from somewhere else. Here is what I am trying to use now. IT Works in Query Manager but throws an error (...in this security context) when I run it in ASP.NET...SELECT @UserName=(select UserName from [aspnetdb].dbo.aspnet_Users where UserID=@UserID) Thanks.
During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.
C:>aspnet_regsql.exe -A m -E Start adding the following features:Membership ...............An error has occurred. Details of the exception:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under thedefault settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: NamedPipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
I am having problems connecting to the database. I am trying to use Membership API and for some reason it will no longer connect to the database. I previously had Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and it worked just fine, until I tried to install MS SQL Express. I have tried the aspnet_regsql and sqlcmd InstallCommon.sql and both times I received a named pipe error. I look at the configuration and it said named pipes enabled.
I eventually gave up after trying for two days and removed MS SQL Express, but now I am still getting the same error. I tried to uninstall all of the SQL editions and reinstall the MSDE that comes with VS 2005, but I am getting the same error.
When checking the ASP.NET Web Application and testing the provider I receive the following error: Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.
The security tab gives you the following error: There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
Running the sqlcmd in the command prompt I receive the following error: Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup.
On my VWD 2005 Express, I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express databases in the App_Data folder.I kind of remember these 2 databases were installed from Wrox web site or a zip file. Now we still useSQL Server 2000 databases for our ASP.net applications. I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express. These 2 databases in the App_Data folder seem to work fine although I can not see them from theManagement Studio Express. My question is: How do I 'manually' create a new SQL Server 2005 database into the App_Data folder? TIA,Jeffrey
For MS Press Book, ADO.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition by Rebecco Riordan, installing the code samples created a ConfigDB.exe file under SampleDBs folder. Running this exe file created a AdoStepByStep into the Database folder in SQL Server 2005 Express.
However, for ASP.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition, by George Shepherd, there is no Config.exe to install the ASPNETDB SQL Server 2005 Express database. I right clicked the Database folder to 'Attach' the database. But, the database just showed a 'c: ASPNETDB.MDF filfe path as a name. Further, running the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12 showed a 'Timeout Expired' error msg, indicating something wrong with accessing the SQL Server database.
How can I run the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12? How can I install the ASPNETDB?
set up asp .net user account on sql server 2005Question:
I've read the instructions in this article: http://www.netomatix.com/Development/aspnetuserpermissions.aspxBut do not know how to do this:You can grant 'Network Service' or 'ASPNET' user accounts permissions to connect to database. Please provide example on how to do this, thanks!
I have just finished configuring my first test mirrored environment (High safety mode). I setup the database engine service accounts on each of the servers with domainuser. I inherited a production mirrored environment set up by someone else. On the production servers the database engine service account is NT Authorityuser a local account. I am trying to practice installing Windows updates within a mirrored environment and I not sure how to proceed when the service account is NT Authority user account. should I change the service account to a domainuser?

I have been running a script in SQL Server 2000 as sa also as a Active Directory user who has administrator rights (I tested both approaches SQL Server then Windows Authentication) in Query Analyser which grants execute rights to the stored procedures within the database instance and Query Analyser does not give any errors when I run the script. I have made sure that each transaction has a go after it. I then return to Enterprise Manager, check the rights (I apply them to roles so that when we create another SQL Server user we just grant him/her rights to the role) and discover that the role has not been granted the rights. I seems to be occurring only with 2 of the procedures. Is there a known bug that might be causing this?
I have several DTS jobs that runs well as a job with my nt login account for the SQL agent service startup account, but if I use the System account they fail with this error. " Error opening datafile: Access is denied. Error source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset Provider"
The data has change access to the System account under the NT security.
Basically a dts package has been setup that pulls in data from another companies server, this data requires to be on-demand i.e individual users can pull in updates of the data when they require it.
I am using xp_cmdshell and dtsrun to pull in the data. This obviouly works fine for me as i am a member of sysadmin.
Books online quotes " SQL Server Agent proxy accounts allow SQL Server users who do not belong to the sysadmin fixed server role to execute xp_cmdshell"
So i went to the SQL Server Agent Properties 'Job System' tab and unchecked 'Non-sysadmin job step proxy account' and entered a proxy account.
The proxy account has been setup as a Windows user with local administrator privilages and even a member of the sysadmin server role - just in case.
Now when i log onto the db with my test account - a non-sysadmin - and attempt to run the stored proc to import the data i recieved the message 'EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_cmdshell', database 'master', owner 'dbo' '
hmm... so basically i have either misunderstood BoL or there is something not quite right in my setup.
I have search the net for a few days now and yet i can find no solution.
I get a strange error message when I try to create a Database Mail account. I know the script is OK because it works fine on another SQL 2005 Server. This script is as follows:
We have a SQL database on a non standard instance. If I open SQL server manager and connect to that database using integrated Windows Authentication I can basically do whatever I want with that database. However, if I try to connect to that database remotely (or even from the sql server) using a test connection UDL it only works if I use Windows integrated security. If I specify my account details specifically (or any other account which has access) it doesn't want to connect.
I am using the MSDE to connect to my ASP.NET application. I get this error after clicking the login button of my login page. Anyone know why this would happen?
Thanks for any help,
Cannot open database requested in login 'DataSQL'. Login fails. Login failed for user 'serverASPNET'.
Hi there,BOL notes that in order for replication agents to run properly, theSQLServerAgent must run as a domain account which has privledges to loginto the other machines involved in replication (under "SecurityConsiderations" and elsewhere). This makes sense; however, I waswondering if there were any repercussions to using duplicate localaccounts to establish replication where a domain was not available.Anotherwords, create a local windows account "johndoe" on both machines(with the same password), grant that account access to SQL Server onboth machines, and then have SQL Server Agent run as "johndoe" on bothmachines. I do not feel this is an ideal solution but I havecircumstances under which I may not have a domain available; mypreliminary tests seem to work. Also, are there any similar considerations regarding the MSSQLSERVERservice, or can I always leave that as local system?Dave
I used a DTS package to import data from one database to a new database (different servers) and it seemed to work fine with the exception that it lost all the passwords. I got one error telling me that for security reasons, it left all passwords NULL. Sure enough - they are now all blank.
Ideas - any good articles with quick fixes ???
Thanks a bunch - I am just getting into a lot of unusual problems this week. Nancy
By the way - what happened to the SQL*Pass message boards ??? Nobody visits there now....
I would like to write code to delete and add a SQL Login to every User database on my development server. Whenever I restore databases to dev using production backups the SQl Server logins are invalid and I need to delete them from the user database and add them again.
I've already hard-coded a sql server job with n steps... a step for each user database to drop and add this sql user to each database. This isn't optimal since I have to add or delete a step everytime a user database is added or deleted.
Does anyone know how to write a loop or cursor that does this dynamically? I am doing something syntactically wrong related to the GO statement.
declare @db varchar(100)
declare @message varchar(3000)
DECLARE user_cursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT top 1 name
FROM master.sys.databases
where name not in
('master','tempdb','model','msdb')
OPEN user_cursor
FETCH NEXT FROM user_cursor INTO @db
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
SELECT @message = 'use '+@db + '
GO'
+'DROP USER [SQLLogin.DataEntry]
CREATE USER [SQLLogin.DataEntry] FOR LOGIN [SQLLogin.DataEntry]
Hi everyone, sorry if this message is not supposed to be posted here. I'm learning asp.net , and would like to know how I can insert data from a excel file into a database on my web account. Pretty much insert/update information in the database using excel file or a access file. Thanks a lot in advance
I'm trying to connect to a database using a service account that we got created. The ID is an AD account and was added to the db as such. When I try to connect to the database using the account with the password I get [login failed for domainid]. The DBA mentioned that its setup to use windows auth, however, I can't connect with this service account using windows Auth, due to I'm using to connect via code.
How can I connect to the database from my code using this ID?
I have the ID and pwd in my code to connect with, does the ID have to be setup differently in the Database?
I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.
Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus
I'm trying to move specific data from three linked tables on a source database to three tables on a destination database by generating dynamic SQL INSERT scripts but am getting stuck on the last set of INSERT statements. I don't think I can use SSIS because the source autonumber fields may already exist on the destination side but I could be wrong.
For simplicity, Table 1 (T1) has one autonumber key of PK1 as well as other fields (A1, B1, etc.).
Table 2 (T2) has one autonumber key of PK2 and a foreign key (FK1) that links back to PK1 as well as other fields (A2, B2, etc.).
Table 3 (T3) has one autonumber key of PK3 and a foreign key (FK2) that links back to PK2 as well as other fields (A3, B3, etc.).
Like this: T1: PK1, A1, B1, etc. T2: PK2, FK1, A2, B2, etc. T3: PK3, FK2, A3, B3, etc.
So, I'm able to query the source database T1 to generate my dynamic SQL INSERT statements that will be run on the destination side. I'm also able to generate my dynamic SQL statements to insert into T2 but when I get to T3 I currently am stuck figuring out how to insert because the destination side is unable to match it's FK2 to the just inserted PK2. It throws the below error.
Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.
Hi When I am trying to connect to MS Sql Server 2000 through Asp.net using C# , I am getting the error : “ Login Failed for HTASPNET . Although I have added permission for this account to access the database . I would be very grateful to you if you could kindly explain to me what is the problem. Thank You.
