Help Merging Records?

Oct 15, 2005

Hello there. I am Completely new to SQL and this forum, and this problem that I have may appear to be very basic to you guys but still... I was wondering if I could get some help with a database I am trying to make in MS Access.

I have used the Access TransferText function to import data from a text file into a table with an ID attached to each line, eg.

ID Text
1 Hello world
2 This is an example
3 Of my database

I want to merge the data, or copy it into a field in a new table to get:

ID Text
1 Hello World
This is an example
Of my database
2 [more imported text from a different table]

and i have been advised that SQL is the best way to do this. Is it possible to have line breaks in a field within microsoft access, or would it have to be structured as

ID Text
1 Hello World This is an Example Of My Database
2 ...

And how would i make the SQL to do this?

Thanks,

Thom

Looking For Recommended Approach To Merging Records

Aug 16, 2006

I am trying to create a dimension table and I am pulling in data from two tables to create it. I need all records from table A, any records from table B that are not in table A, and I need to use the fields from B for those records that do match. What would be the best way to approach this, merge join + derived columns, union all + aggrigation? Any suggestions?

It seems like it's harder to do this in ssis rather then just doing it in the database.

Merging Field Values From With Inner Join?

Apr 1, 2008

Hello Experts,
Been struggling with this issue all morning and beginning to get a headache.  Essentialy my problem is this.  I have a gridview control that ive bound to datasource where the select statement is using an inner join to retrieve textual info from one table in refernce to an object_id contained within both. i.e
SelectCommand="SELECT 'multiple fields from both tables'FROM ZCRMTAB_ACTIVITY INNER JOIN ZCRMTAB_ACT_LOG ON ZCRMTAB_ACT_LOG.OBJECT_ID = ZCRMTAB_ACTIVITY.OBJECT_ID WHERE (ZCRMTAB_ACTIVITY.REF_CUST_NO = @REF_CUST_NO) ORDER BY ZCRMTAB_ACTIVITY.CREATED_AT DESC">
<SelectParameters><asp:QueryStringParameter Name="fieldName" QueryStringField="value" Type="String" />
My problem is that this returns individual row results and are displayed on individual lines.  Where the object_id is the same i want all the textual info to be displayed within the same row.
Does anyone know how i can accomplish this?
Thanks in advance

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Merging Pseudo Duplicate Records

Apr 21, 2014

We have a data warehouse staging database in which we capture change history for hundreds of tables from a source system. In the source system, records are updated in place, but in our data warehouse we capture these changes by "terminating" the existing record and adding a new record reflecting the changes. In the data warehouse we add two columns to every table -- effective_date and expiration_date -- which indicate the dates the record was in effect in the source system. By convention, an expiration_date of 6/6/2079 means the record is currently still active in the source system. Each day we simply compare yesterday's version of the record (in the data warehouse) against today's version (in the source system). If differences are found in any of the columns, we terminate the record and add a new one, setting those dates appropriately.

In this example, the employee_id column is the natural key in the source system. We add the effective_date and expiration_date in the data warehouse, so those three columns together make up the key in the data warehouse. The employee_name, employee_dept, and last_login_date columns all come from the source system as well.

drop table mytbl
create table mytbl (
effective_date smalldatetime,
expiration_date smalldatetime,
employee_id int,
employee_name varchar(30),

[code]....

In the select output, you can follow the trail of changes for each of these three employees. Bob moved from dept 7 to 8 at some point; Frank didn't change departments at all; Cheryl moved from dept 6 to 9 and later back to 6. However, the last_login_date was updated frequently for all these employees.

We've tracked hundreds of tables this way for years, some with hundreds of columns. For optimization purposes, I'm now interested in trimming the fat a bit. That is, we track changes in many columns that we don't really need in our data warehouse. Some of these columns are rapidly-changing, causing all sorts of unnecessary terminate/inserts in the data warehouse. My goal is to remove these columns, reclaim the disk space and increase the ETL speed. So in this example, let's get rid of the last_login_date column.

alter table mytbl
drop column last_login_date
select *
from mytbl
order by employee_id, effective_date

Now in the select output, you can see we have many "effective duplicate" records. For example, nothing changed for Bob between 1/1/2014 and 1/31/2014 -- those really should be one record, not three. Here's the challenge: I'm looking for an efficient way to merge these "effective duplicates" together, through set-based sql updates/deletes/inserts (hoping to avoid any RBAR operations). Here's what the table ultimately should look like (cheating to get there):

create table mytbl2 (
effective_date smalldatetime,
expiration_date smalldatetime,
employee_id int,
employee_name varchar(30),
employee_dept int

[code]...

Note that Bob only has two records (he changed department), Frank only has one record (no changes), and Cheryl has three records (two department changes).

My inclination would be to drop the unwanted columns, then GROUP BY all the remaining columns from the source system, and taking the MIN effective_date and MAX expiration_date. However, this doesn't work for cases like Cheryl's -- she moved to another department, then back again, so that change history needs to be retained.

As I mentioned, we have hundreds of tables, and I'd like to strip out dozens (maybe hundreds) of unused columns, so ultimately there will be millions of these pseudo-duplicates that need to be merged together. These are huge tables, so I really need to find an efficient set-based approach to this.

SQL Server 2008 :: Comparing / Merging Records In Single Table?

Jun 2, 2015

I'm trying to avoid a large amount of manual data manipulation.

Here's the background: Legacy system that has (well let's call apples apples) pretty much no method of enforcing data integrity, which has caused a fairly decent amount of garbage data to be inserted in some tables. Pulling one of the [Individuals] table from within this Legacy system and inserting it into a production system, into the Table schema currently in place to track [Individuals] in this Production system.

Problem: Inserting the information is easy, how to deduplicate the records that exist within the staging table that the legacy [Individuals] table has been dumped into in production, prior to insertion. (Wanting to do this programmatically with SQL or SSIS preferably, so that I can alter it later to allow for updating existing/inserting new)

Staging Table Schema:

;
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[stage_Individuals](
[SysID] [int] NULL, --Unique, though it's not an index intended to identify the [Individuals]
[JJISID] [nvarchar](10) NULL,
[NameLast] [nvarchar](30) NULL,
[NameFirst] [nvarchar](30) NULL,
[NameMiddle] [nvarchar](30) NULL,

[code]....

Scenario: There are records that duplicate the JJISID, though this value is supposed to be unique for every individual. The SYSID is just a Clustered Index (I'm assuming) within the Legacy system and will be most likely dropped when inserted into the Production [Inviduals] table. There are records that are missing their JJISID, though this isn't supposed to happen either, but have valid information within SSN/DOB/Name/etc that can be merged into the correct record that has a JJISID assigned. There is really no data conformity, some records have NULLS for everything except JJISID, or some records will have all the [Individuals] information excluding the JJISID.

Currently I am running the following SQL just to get a list of the records that have a duplicate JJISID (I have other's that partition by Name/DOB/etc and will adapt whatever I come up with to be used for those as well):

;
select j.*
from (select ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY JJISID ORDER BY JJISID) as RowNum, stage_Individuals.*, COUNT(*) OVER (partition by jjisid) as cnt from stage_Individuals) as j
where cnt > 1 and j.JJISID is not nullNow, with SQL Server 2012 or later I could use LAG and LEAD w/ the RowNum value to do my data manipulation...but that won't work because we are on SQL Server 2008 in this environment.

[URL]

With, the following as a potential solution:

GSquared (3/16/2010)Here's a query that seems to do what you need. Try it, let me know if it works.

Performance on it will be a problem, but I can't fine tune that. You'll need to look at various method for getting this kind of data from the table and work out which variation will be best for your data. Without access to the actual table, I can't do that.

;
WITH CTE
AS (SELECT master_id,
MIN(ID) AS first_id,
MAX(Account_Expiry) AS latest_expiry
FROM #People
GROUP BY master_id)
SELECT P1.master_id,

[code].....

Unfortunately, I don't think that will accomplish what I'm looking for - I have some records that are duplicated 6 times, and I'm wanting to keep the values within these that aren't NULL.

Basically what I'm looking for, is to update any column with a NULL value to the corresponding Duplicate [Individuals] record value for that column.

**EDIT - Example, Record 1 has a JJISID with NULL NameFirst & NameLast BUT Record 2 has the same JJISID and values for NameFirst & NameLast. I'm wanting to propogate the NameFirst & NameLast from Record2 into Record1

SQL Server 2014 :: Selecting And Merging Records For Singular Complete Record

Jan 24, 2015

I have a database full of different types of leads some for company A some for company B and so on, each doing a different service. However the leads from B can be used for A and leads from A can be used for B, so I want to merge the data.

Example:

Phone Number Name Home Owner Credit Insurance
727-555-1234 Dave Thomas Yes B
727-555-1234 Dave Thomas Gieco

I would like the end result to be one record:

Phone Number Name Home Owner Credit Insurance

Since these were imported into SQL they all have a unique ID, here are the current labels

ID,phone_ number,first_ name,last_name,address1, address2, address3,city,state,postal_code,HOME_OWNR,HH_INCOME,CREDIT_RATING,AGE,MATCH,source_id,

How To Delete Records With A Field Containing NULL

Calculating A Field Value Based On Other Records

May 20, 2008

I have two tables and they have a foreign key relationship.  It will be a 1 to Many realationship.
Table1- the primary key table has the following columns
ContentID - int identity field
DateAdded- datetime
Table2 - The foreign key table, has the following relevant fields
FK - int foreign key
version - int
When an initial record is added there is a record added to each table.  The ContentID in Table1 will match the FK field in Table2.  Then a user will be able to "edit" the record in Table2, but instead of writing over the record that is already there, a new record will be added to Table2.  I would like to calculate the version field where each time a record is added for the particular ContentID/FK it adds 1 to the last version that was added to that particular ContentID/FK.
Does that make sense.  I am trying to implement some type of revision tracking for my CMS that I am building and this is the only way I can come up with because my client is worried that somebody will go in and make incorrect changes to their site and  they want to be able to roll it back to a previous version.
I would appreciate any ideas.
Thanks,
laura

Select Records That Do Not Duplicate On A Certain Field.

Mar 15, 2004

I am looking for some help in pulling certain people out of a table

This is the basic setup of my table

PK ID NAME MEETING
1 11111 Joe CLASS98
2 22222 Jane CLASS98
3 33333 Bob CLASS98
4 11111 Joe CLASS04
5 22222 Jane CLASS04
6 44444 Sally CLASS04

What I am wanting to do is Select only the people who attended CLASS98 but didn't attend CLASS04

I could just remove the CLASS04 people by sorting if I could just return the rows that do not duplicate the ID and meeting is either CLASS04 or CLASS98

Either way would get me to my goal.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

ID.....Code...Result
5......33.....33 23
5......23.....33 23

I need the code to get the Result field. I know the code if you were to find the sum, min, max, etc...

(SELECT SUM(CODE)

WHERE ID = Table.ID) AS Result

But I don't know how to write it so it will combine strings.

Select Many Records Into 1 Comma Seperated Field.

Oct 30, 2006

I want to pull out some information for documenting my user accounts.I want to be able to show all of the users and what companies those users have access to.

The table which stores the company information lists it in multiple rows, so there will be many results for each user
user -- companyid
johnd -- 2
johnd -- 5
johnd -- 1

I want to select this into one record so it will show up like this
user -- companies
johnd -- 2,5,1

The only way I know how to do this would be with a sub-query that uses a cursor to loop through & dump it into one string value, and then output the string value to the field. This seems extremely inefficient for such a seemingly simple task.

Can somebody help me out here?

Multiple Records Tied To Foreign Key Field?

Jun 6, 2008

I'm a total newb to SQL so I apologize if I butcher the description of what I'm looking to do :) Hopefully the example makes more sense. Is it possible for a single record in 1 table to contain relationships to several records in a different table?

What I've got so far is 2 tables - Hardware and Software, with ID Specifying primary keys HardwareID and SoftwareID respectively. the hardware records are for computer details and the software obviously are for programs. What I need to be able to do is pull up a hardware record and be able to see what software is installed on it, and vice versa pull up a software record to see which computers it's installed on. The problem I'm running into is that a computer can have multiple programs installed on it and a program can be installed on multiple computers, so I don't know how to create that relationship to account for that.

What I'd like to see is in the Hardware table a column for SoftwareID that has a foreign key relationship to the SoftwareID field in the Software Table, and vice versa....My question though is is that possible to do and have potentially multiple separate records it links to from that same column field? I might have a computer with say Windows XP Pro, Office 2003 Standard, Adobe Acrobat 8 and a proprietary rate calculator program that i need each to be displayed with their details when I open that computer's record. Or on the software side if I need to see which computers a license is already installed on then I want to make sure I can pull up the full list of computers.

And finally if what I'd like to do isn't possible as I described it...any recommendations for a better way?

Thanks all for the help!

Conditional Return Of A Value From A Set Of Records As A Field Value In A Query

Hi,

I need to implement some thing like this.

I have a query like

SELECT table1.col1

FROM table1
INNER JOIN table2

This is the query that get the report data for my report. Now I need to replace the second column with an actual response like €˜accepted€™ and €˜rejected€™. And these values should be a result of evaluation of this form

Statusarray[] = ResponseStoredProcedure(table1.col1)

If(Statusarray.count < 1)
Set _response = €˜accepted€™
Else
Get Statusarray[1]
Compare this to Statusarray[0]
Set _response = some result based on comparision.

The _response returned in the query should return the actual response based on this evaluation where ResponseStoredProcedure is sent the current row value for table1.col1.

How can this be done in sql(using SQL Server 2005)

Selecting Records Where Part-field Is Unique

Aug 10, 2015

I have a very large CSV file containing name-and-address information which I am reading in a Visual Basic project using the Microsoft.JetOLEDB.4.0 provider.

The key field on which the CSV file is to be filtered is the PostCode field.  This is a UK-format PostCode "XXnn Nxx" where "XX" is one or more letters denoting a geographical area within the UK and "nn" is one or more characters (starting with at least one numeric digit) which when combined with the area code denotes a specific district within the geographical area.  My aim is to identify all the unique UK postal districts held within my address CSV file.

Because I do not know how to use SQL to filter on the partial contents of a database field I am presently reduced to extracting unique full PostCodes using "SELECT DISTINCT PostCode,City,County FROM [ADDRESSES.csv]" into a DataTable object, then sequentially reading that DataTable using the operation of a dictionary object to identify unique PostCode areas, to finally construct the DataTable I need.

Is it possible in SQL to select records where the value of a varying number of characters before a space character in a given (PostCode) field is unique?

Need Help W/ SELECT From One Table, One Field, Multiple Unique Records

Apr 22, 2006

I'm new to MS SQL and VB. I have a table with one field JOB_NAME containing 20 records. Out of that field I want to retrieve 6 of the 20 records into a pulldown menu. They are all unique text names like so:

Anna Smith
John Doe

etc. I did not see IDs listed for any of the names in the table when I looked.

There is no common denominator to the names that can be filtered in the SELECT statement, and the 6 that I want will need to be pulled out individually.

Is there a way to do this with a SELECT statement? I have not found much information about how to extract unique records out of a single field. Here's the statement I'm using which pulls all of them:

strSQL = "SELECT DISTINCT JOB_NAME AS Names FROM [WORKER_NAMES] WHERE JOB_NAME<>' ' ORDER BY JOB_NAME ASC"

This gives me the total list but I only want to bring back 6 of the 20 for the pulldown.

Is there a way to modify this statement to pull only the records that I want?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Insert Multiple Records Into A Single Field On Another Table

Feb 15, 2012

I have a table JOBCODE which contains a list of codes.

I want to insert these values into table VIEWS as a list separated by spaces.

E.G.

Table Jobcodes looks like this

code
1
2
3
4
5
6

And I want table Views to look like this:

field1
1 2 3 4 5 6

How do I go about this?

WHERE Clause On Nullable Field Not Return Null Records?

Nov 10, 2014

I recently ran into an issue with an issue with a query against our Data Warehouse. When attempting to sum revenue from a table, and using a WHERE clause on a field that contains NULL values, the records with the NULL values are suppressed (in addition to whatever the WHERE clause specified). I believe this is because a NULL value is unknown so SQL doesn't know if it does or doesn't fit the criteria of there WHERE clause so it is suppressed.

That being said, is there a way to avoid this instead of having to add an ISNULL function in the WHERE clause which is going to kill performance?

Code:
create table #nullTest (
name varchar(50)
,revenue int)

INSERT INTO #nullTest
Values ('Tim',100)
,('Andrew', 50)
,(null, 200)

SELECT sum(revenue) as Revenue FROM #nulltest WHERE name <> 'tim'

Ideally, I would want the SELECT statement above to return 250, not 50. The only way I can think to accomplish this is with this query:

Code:
SELECT sum(revenue) as Revenue FROM #nullTest WHERE isnull(name,'') <> 'tim'
