Need A Quick Hand Using ORDER BY With Two Fields In The Same Table.

Aug 6, 2004

I have a problem with ordering and I am hoping that someone is able to help.

In my table I have two fields, "requestdate" and "sentdate", and when I display the records I would like to sort by BOTH fields. I want to do this so that the full query is in order by date.

I tried:

ORDER BY requestdate, sentdate DESC

But obviously all that does is order by requestdate (which is NULL or a date) and than it will order by sentdate.

Can somebody tell me how to order by both as if they were the same field?

Thanks!

ORDER BY - Very Quick Question

May 16, 2008

I have a view that I want to display in a particular order so I added "ORDER BY <column> DESC" to the end of my view logic. When I run it as a query or even when I execute the view in the modify window, it appears correctly ordered. But, when I just "Open View", it's not ordered how I want it. I don't know why it doesn't order it when you open the view, but how can I resolve this issue?

Thanks!

HOw To Order Fields Of Type Varchar?

Mar 22, 2000

I have a varchar field which holds IDs like (1, 3, 5, 19, 23) when I order it, i get it ordered in ASCII order like (1, 19, 23, 3, 5) rather than (1, 3, 5, 19, 23) Even if I convert it to int, I won't be able to order it.

is there any way I can order a varchar field numerically?

Analysis :: Order Of Rows In Tabular Table Not In Same Order Data Was Retrieved?

May 19, 2015

I never paid much attention to this before but I noticed this today in a new table I was creating.

For tables defined in the tabular model the table properties have something like SELECT Blah FROM TableName ORDER BY Blah Then in the tabular model the table's data is in the same order it was ordered by in the data source for the table.

I have a date table I setup and I noticed it is NOT respecting the sort order.

I have it sorted by DateID which sorts with the oldest date first and newest date as last row. However, the table that is imported and stored in the data model is not in that order.

I can of course manually sort the rows in BIDS/DataTools, but I find this discrepancy odd.

Would this have negative impacts on the EARLIER function for example if the data rows are not in the order specified?

Default Sort Order - Open Table - Select Without Order By

Mar 27, 2008

Hi!

I recently run into a senario when a procedure quiered a table without a order by clause. Luckily it retrived data in the prefered order.

The table returns the data in the same order in SQL Manager "Open Table"

So I started to wonder what deterimins the sort order when there is no order by clause ?

I researched this for a bit but found no straight answers. My table has no PK, but an identiy column.

Peace.

Validation Of Returned Order Of Fields From A Stored Proc

Jul 17, 2006

Hi,
Can we validate the returned order of fields from a stored procedure? Infact, i am taking a query as user input and extracts the results based on the query but for that order of fields specified in a query is important.
Can i check the order after the query is run i.e if this is entered "select field1,field2,field3 from table" then i need to check the order of the resultset generated. I can't check the query before the resultset is generated because a user can enter bunch of queries.
Any way will work, tsql or .net app.
Thanks,

1 A 1 VR
2 B 2 VR
3 A 3 VF
4 A 2 VF
5 B 1 VF

the rules is:
if there are rows with same values of F3 field, then choose the top 1 row order by F1,F2 in the group, and delete other rows.

how can I delete rows with ID in (2 , 3 , 5)?

Data Access :: Order By And Minus In Char Fields

Apr 29, 2015

I have a test query that i have ordered by the expected result order.

select t from (
select cast('1' as nvarchar(20)) as t
union all select '1---qa'
union all select '1q'
union all select '1q1'
union all select '1qz'

[Code] ....

and the question is... why is minus character (at 3rd line in '1---qa' string) ignored by "order by" clause? That row is put after '1q1' and not after '1'.

When you replace '-' with '+' or any other special char it works as expected but not with '-'. It is just ignored no matter if there is one or more of them.

Don't mind local chars like čž, they are for testing purposes with collate (thus commented) and with bin collation that is not doing proper sorting but minus order is ok in that case.

Tested on SQL 2008 R2 and SQL express 2012, database collation is 'Croatian_CI_AS'.

Multiple CASE Statements - Three Fields To Be True In Order To Return Y

Feb 19, 2014

How do I properly write a CASE statement for the following business logic:

I want three of the following fields to be true in order to return 'Y'.

For example:

If field name 'Accepted' = 1 AND field 'StepNo' = '1' and field 'Visit' = 'V1'

Otherwise, I want it to return 'N'.

I have tried the following code below and it is not working.

, CASE WHEN Accepted = '1' AND StepNo ='1' AND Visit ='V1'
THEN 'Y' ELSE 'N' END AS 'StatusQ (Col N)'

Get Table Date Using Sysobjects And Syscolumns. Quick?

May 22, 2007

All my online research has told me how to get info about a table field's data using the system tables, but I can't find anything that tells how to get that table field's data specifically. Could be that it's difficult to explain so difficult to search on but I know there has to be a way to do this and it can't be that difficult.

How do I use the system tables sysobjects and syscolumns to give me the data from a specific field in a third table?

Basically I don't want to know the field type for a tables field, I want to know that field's value.

Let's say I have a table called tblCompanies and that table has 4 fields. idCompany, companyName, companyState, and companyCountry.

How can I return the value as a command parameter for any one of the 4 fields using sysobjects and syscolumns?

If I were writing dynamic SQL I would do something like this:

set @valueToReturn = exec ('select ' + @fieldNameToReturn + ' from ' + @tableToSearch + ' where ' + @fieldToMatchOn + ' = ' + @valueToMatchOn)

But I don't want to use dynamic SQL, I want to use the existing system tables to write a straightforward query. My nonfunctioning/English version of this would be:

give me the value for the field name I send in as a string (@fieldNameToReturn)
from the table I send in as a string (@tblToSearch)
where (sysobjects.name = @tblToSearch) and (syscolumns.name = @fieldNameToReturn) and (@tblToSearch.@fieldnameToMatchOn = @valueToMatchAgainst)

I'm using sysobjects and syscolumns because that's where I can use my variables for table name and column name to link. I just can't figure out how to get hold of my actual data table and the values in it.

Does that make any sense to anyone? I'm sure someone has had to want something like this.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Using LIKE To Find Any Of Fields In One Table In Fields Of Another

Jul 31, 2013

I have a list of items in one table and a field (pageName) in another table that may contain one of the aforementioned items somewhere within that field. There is no fixed position within the field where the itemNo may be so I can't just use SUBSTRING(pageName,2,5) in(select itemNo from tblItem).

Logically, it's like I need to combine IN and LIKE: select pageName where pageName LIKE IN %select itemNo from tblitemNo%..LIKE can only handle one comparison string.

i've been writing an app for my company that has a front end screen in which the user types in all infos needed (ie. name, address, city, state, etc - 82 fields to be exact) then clicks an "add" button, which i put at the bottom, and have that data dumped into a SQL table... the page is then redirected to another page which reads the record just added and displays all the fields that the user submitted...

Hey.. Two Issues At Hand.

May 15, 2008

Hello !

I came across some interesting issues that solving them will definately help me a lot !

1) Is there a way to insert my database a row, and that it will automatically fill up the datetime column with the local machine time ? (so that I won't have to worry about users local time)

2) I'm trying to synchronize between two data sources - one is my DB and the other is a file. The data in the file should represent the data to be in the DB. However, I don't want to delete all the records and then just insert everything in the file, but to perform Insert, Update or Delete operations according to the file's changes. I managed to do the Insert and Update, but I can't find a solution to a scenario where old data, which is on the DB but not on the file, could be deleted from the DB.

I appreciate the help A LOT !

Need Hand Holding

Oct 7, 2007

Hi -
Is there a resource I can go to that lists people who I pay to talk me through stuff like getting SQL Server Express installed, get some sample data input and then get that data into Excel? I just cannot seem to get any help that works for me to learn SQL Server; the books are obtuse, the online help too indirect. Once I get something working I hope to enhance it on my own, but I have been stuck at the start for a very long time. There is stuff for me to do that is not getting done.

Lend A Hand With A Query

Aug 23, 2007

I have a question about a query.I have 2 tables:As an example I have the following tables (not my real tables)1) lstParts: Complete list of parts with 2 fields:  partID, partName.2) tblOrders: table of orders with 2 fields:  partID, custIDObviously the partID’s are keys to each other.
What I want is a list of all the records in lstParts that are not in tblOrders for an individual customer.  So it might answer, “what parts has this customer NOT ordered??
What I have so far is close but it is repeating the correct result for each row in tblOrders.
Here is what I have so far
 SELECT
p.partID,
p.partName
FROM
lstParts p
LEFT OUTER JOIN tblOrders o
ON p.partID <> o.partID
WHERE
o.custID = ‘123’
Any help would be appreciated-Thanks

Right-hand Side Of Report Being Cut Off

Jan 18, 2006

Folks,

On matrix reports, when viewed with IE through the ReportServer URL access page, Matrix reports are getting cut off on the right-hand side to the original size of the report.  However, this corrects itself immediately if you toggle any item, or change the zoom level.

What's really confusing is that most of our reports that have expanding functionality work just fine -- there's just a couple that don't.  We have spent a couple days trying to figure out what's different with no luck.

EDITED: navigating away from the page by typing another URL in the address bar, and then hitting back, corrects this.  The problem is also not present with &rc:Toolbar=false, but with the toolbar on, it's there.

Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

HAND SYMBOL ON DATABASE BARREL

Oct 27, 1999

We are running SQL Version 7.0.
I recently set up a simple snapshot replication. After restarting enterprise manager a hand symbol showed up under the database barrel as if a share symbol.
Am I correct in assuming the symbol means replication. Is there a source that explains what the various symbols mean?

Sqldatasource Setting Reset After Page Postback, Could Anyone Give Me A Hand On This

Nov 25, 2005

Hi, I have created a search page which needs to perform different
search function in same page. I have setuped a sqldatasource then
manual
setup the connection string and command inside the codefile. So the
select command can be various depends on the event. The problem is
all of those setting will be reset after I click on the pageindex in
the girdview control to go to next pages. Since this gridview is linked

with this sqldatasource control, I need to restore the connection
string/command when user choose decide to view next page of data inisde
the
gridview.

I think I must have done something wrong in here becuase it will end up
retrieving  the total amount of data when everytime user choose to
view next
or perivous page.

Can someone give me a hand on this ? Thanks

Creating Table Fields Dynamically From Another Table Row

Aug 31, 2006

Hello all:

Is it possible to creates fields of the table dynamically?. I have this situation in my project. This is just a small sample. I have row of length 140. I don't wan't to declare all this fields manually using the create table command.

The description of table is as, in this table all the field are of type varchar only, there are like 140 columns.

create dummy emp (
field1 VARCHAR(100), field2 varchar(200), field3 VARCHAR(100).... )

Table: Dummy
================================================== ==
field1 field2 field3..........
Empid Empname empaage1 sam 23...........
2 rai 22............
.
.
.
n raj 45.............
================================================== ==
Now I want to create another table as "EMP" , with proper data type
fields too..

create table emp (
empid int, empname varchar(100), empage int....)

The table should look like as:

Table: EMP
================================================== ==
Empid Empname empaage............
1 sam 23...............
2 rai 22................
.
.
.
n raj 45.................
================================================== ==

I want to do this dynamically.....
Some how I need to extract those field from table[dummy]; the first row acts as a column header for the table[Emp] and the subsequent row acts as a record for the table[Emp]

A small rough snippet of the code will be appreciated....

Waiting for replies........
saby

HT Insert Table A Record Fields Into Table B

Jun 13, 2008

All- Supposing I have table_a and table_b. Table_a has fields FIRST_A and LAST_A for people's first and last names. Similarly, table_b has FIRST_B and LAST_B for people's first and last names.

How would I create a record in table_b for each record in table_a, such that for each added record, the values of FIRST_A is copied to FIRST_B and LAST_A is copied to LAST_B. (Table_b will have other fields that are left unfilled.)

Thanks!

Possible To Stop SSRS GUI From Destroying Hand Rolled Mdx In Datasets By Silently Reverting To Design Mode?

May 30, 2007

Since as soon as you extend your mdx datasets manually you can no longer switch back into design mode without losing your changes, right?

If that's the case, is there some way to disable design mode completely? i'm finding that the GUI has the tendency to SILENTLY revert the dataset editor back to design mode while I'm busy editing a layout, thereby losing my carefully crafted MDX.
