Null Error

Aug 2, 2007

Data Source: Oracle 10g R2
Data DestinationQL Server 2000

The date data in Oracle is stored as Number. i.e. yyyymmdd
So I am moving the date data from Number(8,0) to datetime field. I using script component to convert the data to mm/dd/yyyy.
When there is no data at the source I do not want to populate the destination datetime column. I want to keep it as Null.
So ....
My script looks like this....

if SourceData.Length = 8 then
Populate the destination data
end if
I am getting error when I hit the row which does not have date data.
How to solve the above problem.
Thank you,
Smith

Problem With Isnull. Need To Substitute Null If A Var Is Null And Compare It To Null And Return True

Sep 20, 2006

Hey. I need to substitute a value from a table if the input var is null. This is fine if the value coming from table is not null. But, it the table value is also null, it doesn't work. The problem I'm getting is in the isnull line which is in Dark green color because @inFileVersion is set to null explicitly and when the isnull function evaluates, value returned from DR.FileVersion is also null which is correct. I want the null=null to return true which is why i set ansi_nulls off. But it doesn't return anything. And the select statement should return something but in my case it returns null. If I comment the isnull statements in the where clause, everything works fine. Please tell me what am I doing wrong. Is it possible to do this without setting the ansi_nulls to off??? Thank you

set ansi_nulls off

go

declare

@inFileName VARCHAR (100),

@inFileSize INT,

@Id int,

@inlanguageid INT,

@inFileVersion VARCHAR (100),

@ExeState int

set @inFileName = 'A0006337.EXE'

set @inFileSize = 28796

set @Id= 1

set @inlanguageid =null

set @inFileVersion =NULL

set @ExeState =0

select Dr.StateID from table1 dR

where

DR.[FileName] = @inFileName

AND DR.FileSize =@inFileSize

AND DR.FileVersion = isnull(@inFileVersion,DR.FileVersion)

AND DR.languageid = isnull(@inlanguageid,null)

AND DR.[ID]= @ID

)

go

set ansi_nulls on

Newbie Need Help. Export Error, Null Value Error.

Sep 24, 2004

Hey all,

I'm currently using a shopping cart software called .netCart, which is in ASP.NET and VB. I have been trying to import my local "fully working" database to my remote server using Enterprise Manager via the DTS Export/Import Wizard, but then the exported remote database is not working with the software. Unfortunately, I have no prior experiences in MS SQL database at all, nor do I know anything about the scripts they used with the software I purchased.

Error message when attempting to run part of the software (website) with the exported database -

"Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'CustomerID', table 'tablename.dbo.Customers'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails. The statement has been terminated. [Customer Table]"

I simply used the DTS wizard to export the database. All settings are left "default" because I don't know what I should do about them....

1) At Specify Table Copy or Quert, "Copy table(s) and view(s) from the source database is selected.
2) Selected all tables. At the "Column Mappings and Transformations" window for all tables, "Create detination table" is SELECTED and "Enable identify insert" is UNCHECKED.
3) At one of the error table (i.e. Customers), the CustomerID int is NOT NULL.

Sorry, I do not know what's wrong with it, and I don't know how to explain it better technically. The software company do not support this as well.

I believe the problem is with the settings in the DTS wizard when I try to export the database. Something is not set right, but I don't know how to do it.

Can anyone please try to solve this problem for me? Thank you very much.

Null Error In One Place, But Not The Next

Aug 9, 2001

One of our customers has a production and a test database. We are loading tables via a C++ program that works on production, but not on test, which is supposed to be an exact duplicate.

The error we are getting when trying to add columns to one of the table is 80004e21 null That is it.

When we load the exact same records in the production environment we do not get the error. We have spent many hours ensuring that the tables are exactly the same on test as in production.

Does anyone know, is there an environment variable at a database level that says how to handle null values?

Thanks!!!

Error: Value Cannot Be Null When Trying To Deploy

Jun 25, 2007

Hi,

I'm getting "Error: Value cannot be null." when trying to deploy a report. I've read through a few others problems and checked places they suggest but I'm stumped. Maybe I have changed something but I'm actually more distressed at such a vague message. It simply has no context.

I can't find anywhere to look other than randomly checking every thing or anything.

This is a totally unhelpful error message.

Not sure where to start looking. (I'm on SQL 2005 SP2 build 3175).

Is there any 'trace' or debugging I can turn on for the build process?

Error Saying I'm Trying To Insert Null When I'm Not (at Least I Don't Think I Am).

Feb 20, 2008

Good Afternoon,

I'm using the personal website starter kit. I would like to add tags to my photos so I've added a Tags table (identity, tagDesc) and an intersection table PhotoTags (PhotoID,TagID). I pass a set of tags as a comma deliminated string such as (Home, Family). The procedure below (sorry I'm not a TSQL programmer) errors out with the message "Cannot insert null into TagDesc" or something like that.

Code Snippet

SET @Tags = RIGHT(@Tags,LEN(@Tags) - @Spot)
END
ELSE
BEGIN
SET @Tag = @Tags
SET @Tags = ''
END

IF (NOT EXISTS(SELECT TagID FROM Tags WHERE LOWER(TagDesc) = LOWER(@Tag)))
BEGIN
INSERT INTO Tags (TagDesc) VALUES (@Tag)
SET @TagID = SCOPE_IDENTITY()
END
ELSE
SELECT @TagID = TagID FROM Tags WHERE LOWER(TagDesc) = LOWER(@Tag)

--finally insert into the intersection table

Error With NULL Using EXECUTE SCALAR

Dec 11, 2007

I keep getting an error message when I try to place the result of an execute scalar command into a text box.  The msg is:"conversion from 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid"
The code I am using is:

Dim con as OLEDBConnection
con =NewOleDB connection("Provider = MIcrosoft.JetOLEDB.4.0, Data Source = "c:caps.mdb")
Dim cmd As OLEDBCommand
cmd= NewOLEDBCommand("Select Product from [Inventory Table] Where [Customer ID] = " & grid View1.SelectdValue
texBox1.Text = cmd.ExecuteScalar

The code works fine as long as there is a value for the Product.  However if the value in the database is NULL I get an error message: :"conversion from 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid". How do I wok around this?

the error is thrown on the following line:

.Parameters.Append .CreateParameter("@State", 3, 1,4,state)

I'm using a table to hold data that I can pass back to the original form page and re-populate the fields that were not validated correctly. The stored procedure either inserts or updates the record in the temp table I've created.

So, currently, as I'm testing, I'm just passing empty values to all the parameters and the @state parameter is failing and throwing the error.

I've double checked that the table has the state column set to integer datatype

The column is set as follows:

Name datatype length Allow Nulls
----------------------------------------------
State int 4 checked

I have tried setting the default value for every column to Null in the table and then also not using a default value. Either way, I still recieve the same error?

Not sure what else to look at?

It seems the problem might be that instead of a null value being passed to the parameter that it is actually empty. Can passing an empty value to a column of datatype integer cause this problem? If so, is there a way to correct it?

Thanks for any help.

Data Source=ORIONOFFICESERVERS;Initial Catalog=CDBDBase;Integrated Security=SSPI;User Id=;Password=;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Auto translate=false"

What is the wrong here-can any body kindly suggest? I have tried with the following too

Data Source=ORIONOFFICESERVERS;Initial Catalog=CDBDBase;Integrated Security=SSPI;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Auto translate=false"

Does SSIS need to have a connection string with SSPI always? is there any way to use a sql authenlication for this purpose? like using sql user name and password in connection string? Please suggest me. I need it badly.

OLE DB Error - Non-NULL Controlling IUnknown Was Specified

Nov 8, 2007

Hi All,

We have an odd OLE DB error here. We can create the connection but only lookup a handfull of tables that are in the database. (Maybe only 10 of 50 - of which I need the ones not being displayed) Even if I choose a table from the incomplete list and try and close the dialog I get the following error. We are trying to pull data from an IBM AS400 if that makes any difference. It did work in SQL2000 - Hope you can help us!!!

Sp_executesql Bug? - @@error = 0 When @statement Is Null

Aug 22, 2007

Example code:

declare @somesql nvarchar(20)
execute sp_executesql @somesql, N'@lnCurrRow int', @lnCurrRow = 1
PRINT @@ERROR

@@Error returns 0, which is seems incorrect since @somesql is null. If you substitute @somesql for the constant NULL then an error is fired. The above also executes successfully with @@error = 0 if you set @somesql = '' (empty string).

EXEC behaves the same way.

It makes sense that executing an empty string should be fine, but NULL? Is there a SET option available that will cause an error to be raised if sp_executesql attempts to execute a nvarchar variable that's set to NULL?

Thanks.

Error Message For Null At SET Or Aggregate

Jun 2, 2006

The following code works perfectly when run by itself:

DECLARE @DateTransaction smalldatetime
DECLARE @TradeDate smalldatetime

SET @DateTransaction = (SELECT Max(DateTransaction) FROM tblImport)
SET @TradeDate = (SELECT Max(DateTrade) FROM tblSystem)
PRINT 'The Transaction Date is ' + CAST(@DateTransaction as varchar) + '. The Trade Date is ' + CAST(@TradeDate as varchar)

However, it is part of a long stored procedure, and when it runs there, I get the following instead of the line confirming the two dates:

Warning: Null value is eliminated by an aggregate or other SET operation.

What could be interfering with this section of the stored procedure?

INSTEAD OF Trigger - Error Inserting Into NOT NULL Field

Oct 7, 2004

I've just noticed some strange behavior that seems like a bug to me.
It's much easier to follow an example of it that to outright explain it, so here goes.

I have a table defined with a NOT NULL constraint on a column and a default clause:
-- DROP TABLE TestTable
CREATE TABLE TestTable ( TestField0 varchar(10), TestField1 varchar(10) NOT NULL DEFAULT ('a') )

I have a view defined on the table, in this example case, the view just mirrors the table one to one:
-- DROP VIEW TestView
CREATE VIEW TestView as SELECT TestField0, TestField1 FROM TestTable

So far so good, if I run this statement, it works as I would expect and inserts the value and the default goes into the other field:
INSERT INTO TestView (TestField0) SELECT 'test'

Now... If I add an INSTEAD OF trigger to the view, and have it perform the insert for me, I get an error with the same insert stmt:
-- DROP TRIGGER TestTrigger
CREATE TRIGGER TestTrigger ON TestView
INSTEAD OF INSERT AS
BEGIN
INSERT INTO TestTable (TestField0, TestField1)
SELECT TestField0, COALESCE(TestField1, 'X')
FROM inserted
END

Notice the trigger will ensure that a null value cannot be inserted into TestField1. If I run this insert stmt though I get an error:
INSERT INTO TestView (TestField0) SELECT 'test'

Server: Msg 233, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The column 'TestField1' in table 'TestView' cannot be null.

Am I missing something or is this a bug?
Thanks

Need Help With Error: Dimension Level Or It's Parent Is NULL

Apr 23, 2008

Hello,

I am getting this error when trying to open a report created with the cube. We use dundas olap chart to generate the xml for the report from the base cube or default perspective. What we do is change the xml dynamically to a different perspective for security purposes and then load the report. If the report xml accesses a dimension that is hidden the assigned perspective then we get the error shown below. Does anyone know how to handle this error?

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Internal error. Dimension level or it's parent is NULL.

This only happens with some of our dimensions. With the other hidden dimensions we get no data message on the chart which is what we want.

I am comparing our dimensions to the Adventure Works cube dimensions which seem to work (I have not tried all of their dimensions yet). Nothing sticks out to me as being a setting that will make the error go way. Anyone have suggestions?

Other things I tried but didn't help were removing the parent child hierarchies and Role based security that uses one of the dimensions that throws the error. I also did a trace on the cube when the error is thrown. I could not see any errors and I was able to execute all of the MDX queries without any problems (I copied and pasted the mdx into SSMS).

As an aside we tried used the Cube Roles and Dimension security (Hiding measures in the Measures Dimension too) but the error that MS (#Error or #Value) throws causes dundas not to work. We also looked UDFs and Cell Level Security but both are more complex/what we need for now.

Thanks in advance,
Sean

Error Including Null Value In A Numeric Field

Apr 19, 2006

Hi All,

I'm migrating some SQL 2000 DTS to SSIS.

I am transfering data from a DB2 table to a SQL 2005 table using the OLE DB Source, Data Converstion then the OLE DB Destionation.

So, I have a numeric (Precision 3, Scale 2) field with NULL value in the DB2 table.

I'm trying to transfer these data to a SQL2005 table and I am receiving this error message below:

"[Destination Table TFACIL [18]] Error: There was an error with input column "COMB_OPPT_PRCT" (2865) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (31). The column status returned was: "The value violated the integrity constraints for the column.". "

The field must accept null because of the APPLICATION ( i can't change it, im not the owner ).

Could someone help me?

Thanks in advance.

Thiago

Puzzle: NULL In Conditional Split Error

Oct 14, 2006

A little puzzle with this Error - Status and PropertyType fields do not allow nulls while other columns do ( there are about 20 columns in original expression but left out for simplicity - these are created the same way ). Any ideas how to solve it?

[Conditional Split Filter Changes [813]] Error: The expression

"LOOK_Status != Status || LOOK_PropertyType != PropertyType
|| (LOOK_OfficeName != OfficeName || ISNULL(LOOK_OfficeName) != ISNULL(OfficeName))
|| (LOOK_OfficeID != OfficeID || ISNULL(LOOK_OfficeID) != ISNULL(OfficeID)) "

on "output "Listing Changed" (885)" evaluated to NULL, but the "component "Conditional Split Filter Changes" (813)" requires a Boolean results.
(My wish for next version is to have better expression editor and be able to see the output for those in dataflow transforms with lets say sample 200 rows)

Report Model Wizard Error - Data Is Null

Oct 29, 2007

I am attempting to create a new report model. When I try to update statistics from the data source view I get the following error - Data is Null. This method or property cannot be called on Null values. I tried changing the generation rules so that attributes are only created for non-empty columns but that didn't help. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Receiving System Error When Retrieving Database Record With Null Value

Sep 26, 2007

I have some VB.NET code to retrieve data from an SQL Server database and display it.  The code is as follows: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
sw_calendar = calendarAdapter.GetEventByID(cid)
If sw_calendar.Rows.Count > 0 Then

lblStartDateText.Text = sw_calendar(0).eventStartDate
lblEndDateText.Text = sw_calendar(0).eventEndDate
lblTitleText.Text = sw_calendar(0).title
lblLocationText.Text = sw_calendar(0).location
lblDescriptionText.Text = sw_calendar(0).description
Else

lblStartDateText.Text = "*** Not Found ***"
lblEndDateText.Text = "*** Not Found ***"
lblTitleText.Text = "*** Not Found ***"
lblLocationText.Text = "*** Not Found ***"
lblDescriptionText.Text = "*** Not Found ***"
End If
 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If all of the fields in the database has values, everything works ok.  However, if the title, location or description fields have a null value, I receive the following error message:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.DBNull' to type 'System.String'.
I've tried a bunch of different things such as:

Adding ".ToString" to the database field,
Seeing if the value is null:  If  sw_calendar(0).description = system.DBnull.value...
...but either I get syntax errors in the code, or if the syntax is ok, I still get the above error message.
Can anyone help me with the code required to trap the null within the code example I've provided?  I'm sure there are other, and better, ways to code this, but for now I'd really like to get it working as is, and then optimize the code once the application is working (...can you tell I have a tight deadline )

Thanks,
Brad

Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Opening A SQL Connection

Jan 16, 2005

Hello everyone. I'm very new to asp.net. I've been coding in vb.net for a while now (getting my associates degree in desktop application programming) and my boss wants all of my new applications to be web based now. Well, i decided to take some initiative on this and begin a new project for my department. This is a very small project. So far, everything is coming along alright (i found an eBook that's helped me quite a bit). Everything was cool until yesterday when i tried to connect to our sql server database. I get an error message stating:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

Because i'm testing this on my system as well as the remote system which hosts the application, i can see the error message on the remote system. Here is the error it's giving me:

You can see my SQL Connection string in there as well. Can someone please help me with this? I can post the code to the entire page as well if that would help. Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Trying To Use Windows Authentication

Feb 6, 2006

I'm working on an ASP.NET project, and we're attempting to switch from SQL Server authentication to Windows authentication to connect to the database.
It works fine locally when I debug in Visual Studio, but when it hits the web server, I get the error: "Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
IIS has anonymous access disabled, and Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. The web.config file has:
<authentication mode="Windows"/><identity impersonate="true"/>
The database I'm attempting to access is on a different machine than IIS, and the connection string doesn't contain a username or password, and has "Trusted_Connection=Yes", and "Integrated Security=SSPI".
From what I've been able to find online, I'm guessing the problem is due to IIS and SQL Server residing on different machines, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any ideas?
