Parameters Approach To Fill Report Header With Source Data Doesn't Work

Jan 19, 2007

It's well known issue, that one can't use any dataset fields in a
report header/footer directly. One of the approach is to create
query-based parameter that basically equals
=First(Fields!@FieldName@.Value, "@DataSetName@") and use that
parameter value instead. But it doesn't work in my case!

My report displays some entity description and is parametrized with
EntityID param. Its header contains entity name that, according to the
approach, is queried from the data source through the EntityName
report parameter. There's important issue: the report is displayed in
ReportViewer control, that is embedded into my application and entity
ID parameter isn't ser by user in ReportViewer parameters area. Its
default value is changed by the application with SetReportParameters()
web method every time a user wants to view the report according to the
entity the user is exploring in the application. But after the report
has been rendered, its header always contains not actual (outdated)
entity name. Nevertheless, the report body contains actual data
(including entity name). If I alter entity ID parameter in ReportViewer
or in web-based Report Manager and refresh report, header displays
correct entity name.

What's wrong in the workflow described?

EM DTS Designer ODBC Source As A File DSN Doesn't Work!

Jul 20, 2005

Hi All there!I am quite new in MS SQL administration so let me explain how it workon Your instances of SQL Servers.We have several DTS packages on our server, all of them managed onsome station which have seriously hardvare problem. So we wolud liketo catch two problems at one time and decided to develop systematicway of DTS manipulation.One of several aspects of this operation would be migration fromsystem ODBC data sources definitions into file ODBC sources ( .dsnfiles) in order to make them easier to manage ( backup for example,and even reusability on other workstations). All .dsn files should belocated on some network resource (\server\directory...) which wouldbe set as default ODBC directory in ODBC administrator on managementstation.When I begin to do so, then it apears that EM DTS Designer does notremember the path to the DSN files ( for example on design panel Ichose file dsn and by browse button point at the certain .dsn file,and then after DTS save the path disapears).Do You use this facility ( file .dsn) in DTS EM Designer, or maybe MShas it treated as usless, and nobody wants to use this?RegardsK

Passing Parameters To DataSet Useb As Report Data Source

May 21, 2007

Hi guys,

How can I pass a parameter used for the DataSet query? I'm using this DataSet file as data source of my .rdlc report for Windows Forms.

I've already done a .rdlc report to Web Forms where I passed the query parameter by ObjectDataSource.SelectParameters, but in Windows Forms this object was not created. I just hava the following created objects:

- despesaTableAdapter (from myDataSetTableAdapter)

- despesaBindingSource (Windows.Forms.BindingSource)

- RelatorioDataSet (from myDataSet)

- relatorioDataSet1 (from myDataSet)

Any help will be very appreciated.

Dynamically Creating The Data Source Of A Report At Run Time Using Parameters

Feb 13, 2008

I have three databases which have the identical data structure. When the user runs a report, he has to select a database.
For example, my report query would look like:

Select * from <theDatabase>.dbo.MyTable

How could I assign the value of <theDatabase> at run time depending on what the user selects from the list?
In my datasource, I have only specified the server name and no value for initial catalog.

ASP And SQL 2005 Passing And Returning Parameters Doesn't Work...help!!!!!

Feb 29, 2008

Ok, I'm a long time reader of this forum and just about everytime I come here looking for an answer its allready been posted and answered. But I can't seem to find this one anywhere. Sorry if its allready been posted...Just point me in the right direction.

Ok, Ive been coding in VB2005 for a while but i'm new to SQL stored procedures. This is prolly going to sound stupid but I don't know where to start. Heres what I need to do.

I have a stored procedure that requires a parameter. I can pass that parameter to the stored procedure and execute it just fine. But I need the result thats returned when the stored procedure is executed. I can't seem to find anyway to return the Result back to me. DataReaders keep blowing up and I have no Idea Why????? Here is how i'm passing the param to the stored proc.

I'm running MS SQL BTW.

Dim myConnection As New SqlClient.SqlConnection("yadayada;Database=BlaBlaBla;Trusted_Connection=True;")

Dim cmd As New SqlClient.SqlCommand("NameOfStoredProc")

cmd.Connection = myConnection

cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

Dim sqlParam As SqlClient.SqlParameter

sqlParam = cmd.Parameters.Add("Variable", SqlDbType.VarChar, 22)

sqlParam.Value = Address 'declared higher up.....its just an int

myConnection.Open()

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery()

myConnection.Close()

Thats all great, but I need to read back the results the stored proc returns. If I execute this in server management studio, it returns a result. But nothing I try in my asp page works. Any help would be Great. Code samples are good too.

Weird!! &&< Sign Doesn't Work Within DataReader Source Connecting To Mysql Using ADO.NET ODBC Option

Jul 25, 2007

my package contains

Two connections ==> one is using OLEDB connecting to SQL server 2005 and the other using ADO.NET's ODBC option to connect to mysql;

Two "Execute SQL Task" ==> one gets maximum ID(bigint) from a SQL server table and the other gets the maximum ID(unsigned) from a mysql's table and bind them to two variables ID1(string) and ID2 (int 64). http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1902297&SiteID=17&mode=1 ;

And one DataFlow whose data source is DataReader Source which queries mysql "select * from table where ID > cast(@ID1 as signed) and ID <= cast(@ID2 as signed) ". To debug, I put a DataViewer between Data Flow Source and Data Flow Destination.

Run the package, I found no data coming into DataViewer and no error message as well. However if I remove the "<=" sign and change the DataReader Source query to "select * from table where ID > cast(@ID1 as signed)", It works perfectly. Initially I thought it's variable @ID2's issue. But if I replace "<=" sign with ">=" sign in the query ==> "select * from table where ID >= (cast(@ID2 as signed) -100)", there is no problem. After tried many times, I found that query just doesn't work with "<" sign or "between". Plus the result of running package tells it's successful but just no records got inserted into Data Flow Destination.

Anyone could help? Thanks!

At the moment, it seems that they form in a column of twos, reading from left to right. I see how the ORDER is affected, by changing the order of the parameters in the Report Data window, but can I change the number of columns?

Import Excel Data Doesn't Work.

Dec 7, 2005

Hi there,

I'm having trouble getting an import to work.

Here what i want:

i have created a dsn to extract data from an SQL2000 server into Excel. this all works fine. Now i have edited the data and would like to import the updated fields in my database.

There are no new fields just updated information. I have used the import wizard from SQL Enterprise manager. I have selected to delete the current table and replace is with the one ive created.

This is where the problems begin.

When i finish the wizard i get an error saying there is a conflict "collum reference constraint". wich i think has something to do that there are links to this table wich can not be simply deleted and recreated.

How do i get around this?

Data Mining Add-Ins Doesn't Work With Non-English Regional Settings

Dec 23, 2006

I tried Data Mining Add-Ins for Office 2007 - CTP December 2006.
Test settings: Windows XP SP2 english with Italian regional settings, Office 2007 english (RTM), SQL Server 2005 Developer (with SP2 CTP Dec06) and Data Mining Add-ins for Office 2007 (CTP Dec06).

If I keep regional settings in Italian, I get error like this:

Old format or invalid type library. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80028018 (TYPE_E_INVDATAREAD))

If I change regional settings to English, the Add-in works.

I found this description as the possible cause of the problem: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178780(vs.80).aspx - if this is the issue, it would be necessary to change the ExcelLocale1033Attribute on the component.

Is there another workaround other than to install the Office 2007 MUI?

ODBC Data Source Doesn't Like My SQL Query

Jul 28, 2006

Good morning all,

I have created this query in SQL Server 2005 which uses an MS SQL Server data source - I've tested it and it perfroms as it should:

SELECT DISTINCT
WIP.R0 AS [Job No], WIP_R23.R0 AS [Pack No], PlanningM2.R1 AS [Part No], WIP.R17 AS FKF, WIP2.R17 AS FKF2, SUBSTRING(PlanningM2.R0, 1, 3)
AS Ref, PlanningM2.R5 AS Qty, LTRIM(RTRIM(WIP_R23.R23)) AS Shortages, LEN(PlanningM2.R1) AS StrLen, Stock.R2 AS [Stock Qty],
WIP.R10 AS Status, WIP2.R10 AS [Pack Status], WIP.R15 AS [Qty UC]
FROM C001_UNIDATA_WIP_NF AS WIP INNER JOIN
C001_UNIDATA_PLANNINGM_NF AS PlanningM ON WIP.R0 = PlanningM.ASSY INNER JOIN
C001_UNIDATA_PLANNINGM_NF AS PlanningM2 ON PlanningM.R1 = PlanningM2.ASSY INNER JOIN
C001_UNIDATA_WIP_R23 AS WIP_R23 ON PlanningM.R1 = WIP_R23.R0 INNER JOIN
C001_UNIDATA_WIP_NF AS WIP2 ON WIP_R23.R0 = WIP2.R0 INNER JOIN
C001_UNIDATA_STOCK_NF AS Stock ON PlanningM2.R1 = Stock.R0
WHERE (WIP_R23.R23 IS NULL) AND (WIP.R0 LIKE N'%' + @RP1 + N'%') OR
(WIP.R0 LIKE N'%' + @RP1 + N'%') AND (PlanningM2.R1 = RIGHT(LTRIM(RTRIM(WIP_R23.R23)), LEN(PlanningM2.R1)))
ORDER BY [Job No], [Pack No]

I am now trying to recreate this query using ODBC and am having one helluva problem with it as it doesn't seem to like many of the functions I've used, such as LTRIM, RTRIM, LEN, RIGHT and won't accept the parameter I've included, or any other parameter come to think of it.

Has anyone else had a similar problem at all, and could you direct me to a solution if you have?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

SQL 2005 SP2 Error 29506 Workaround Doesn't Work - Data On LUNs

May 13, 2008

I have had the same Error 29506 that a lot of people are having when installing SP2 for SQL 2005. I've tried the install with myself (a Domain Admin), local Administrator, cascaded full rights down the entire file system structure and still not luck. One thing I'm wondering if it is hanging me up is that all of my databases and logs are not on C:. They are on LUNS on a NetApp SAN (Data is on M: and Logs is on L:). Even the system databases (Master, Model, etc.) are on the LUNs. The error logs referenced permissions to the data directory under the default installation path on C:. Anyone else have this problem? Got a fix? I really don't want to migrate all of my data back to the local machine, apply the patch, them migrate back. Surely this SP should be able to read the data location from the SQL engine. And surely others have their databases on SANs.... I'm at a loss.

Thanks.

Package With File System Task Doesn't Work Without Sensitive Data With User Keys

Dec 14, 2006

This problem is a bit weird but I'm just wondering if anybody else experienced this.

I have a package that has file system tasks (copying dtsx files actually). Basically the package copies other packages to a pre-defined destination. Thing is, it only works if one of the packages it is configured to copy has some sort of sensitive data (e.g., a connectionstring with a password), otherwise it reports a success message on execution but doesn't actually do anything. I've checked the forcedexecutionresult and it is set to None for that matter.

Just wondering if anybody else experienced this problem and of course if there's a way to solve it.

Thanks.

Character String Query Doesn't Fill Dataset

Mar 15, 2007

I'm working in a ASP.NET 2.0 application with a SQL Server 2000 database on the back end.  I have a strongly typed dataset in the application that calls a stored procedure for the select.  I'm having trouble filling the dataset at runtime though.
I am trying to use a character string query because I setup different columns to be pulled from a table each time and in a different order so my T-SQL looks like this:
set @FullQuery = 'Select ' + @FieldsinOrder + ' from tblExample'exec (@FullQuery)
This works fine in query analyzer.  The results return and display correctly.  However, when I run the application, the dataset does not get filled.  It is like the results do not output to the application.
If I change the query to be a normal select it works.  For example:
select * from tblEmample
That works fine.  What is it about a select query setup as a character string and then executed that ASP.NET doesn't like?

Packages And Data Source Views Do Not Work?

Jun 16, 2006

Hi,

doing my first steps in SSIS I wanted to copy data from 2 different SQL 2000 database servers to a SQL 2005 Data warehouse. For not having to deploy additional views and procedures to the individual systems I chose to create a Data Source View to create an abstract view on the different data sources. I found out that I can have named queries pointing to the two different data sources in the same view.

1 Project, 2 Data Sources, 1 Data Source View with 3 Named Queries

When I now add a Data Flow Task to the Control Flow how can I specify my DSV as Source for Transformations? I even added both OLEDB Connections to the Connection Manager but the Named Queries from my DSV do not appear at all. I even tried "SELECT from [myNamedQueryFromDSV]" but without success.

The description available at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/ms403395.aspx is bullshit. There is nothing to expand about the "Connection Manager" in the Data Flow Window. I can add a OLEDB Source as described in the above HOWTO and double click it. But the dropdown field for Connection Manager does offer only the two OLEDB Connections and nothing more. Among the items of the access mode "Tables and Views" the named queries not appear. It does not even work with a homogeneous Data Source View.

How can I make it work? Ain't there a better (working) HOWTO out there on how to enable DSV als Data Flow Task data sources? Do I have to wait for SP2 to solve the problem or is it not possible by intention?

Cheers,
Frank

Variable Parameters - Which Approach.

Jul 20, 2005

ASP.NET / VB.NETSQL Server 7.0Our client has insisted that we change our established practice ofbuilding SQL in-line and move it all to SPROCs. Not a problem for 80%of the app. However, we have a number of Search/Filter forms thatcontain a number of controls to allow more or less focused searchcriteria to be built up.I have a class that does this quite nicely, examining all controls forvalid input and, if found, concatenated onto the end of what becomes a"WHERE" clause. Once all is done the "WHERE" clause is appended to aSQL Statement and passed to an ExecuteReader function. Only atruntime is it known how many, and which, controls will be used in thefilter.I can think of two methods of approaching this variable parameter listwhich will be required if moving to SPROCs.METHOD 1.Create a SPROC where ALL the possible parameters are used. Forexample:CREATE PROC stpSearchContactsUsingContactRef@ContactRef varchar(50),@Status varchar(50),@IgnoreDate int,@Date1 smalldatetime,@Date2 smalldatetimeASSELECTtblContactSources.*FROMtblContactsWHERE(tblContacts.fldContactID LIKE @ContactRef) AND(tblStatuses.fldStatus LIKE @Status) AND((tblContacts.fldDateCreated >= @Date1) AND(tblContacts.fldDateCreated <= @Date2) OR @IgnoreDate = 0)GOIf either of the parameters @ContactRef and @Status is empty, the codethat retrieves the filter values passes in the value '%', otherwise itwill pass in the user's choice. If the user wants not to search on thedate range, then @Date1 and @Date2 are passed in with '' and@IgnoreDate is set to 0.METHOD 2.Create a SPROC which consists of SQL body as a string, with the"WHERE" clause passed in as a string parameter, and both EXEC'd -CREATE PROCEDURE stpTSRGetFilteredTSR@WhereClause as varchar(3999)ASDECLARE @Body as varchar(3999)DECLARE @OrderBy as varchar(3999)SET @Body = 'SET CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL OFFSELECT TOP 100 PERCENTtblTSRs.fldTSRID, tblTSRs.fldFaultDescription,tblTSRs.fldDateEntered, tblTSRPriorities.fldTSRPriority,tblTSRs.fldTSRPriorityID, tblVehicles.fldRegistrationNumber,tblVehicles.fldVIN, tblTSRStatuses.fldTSRStatus,tblTSRs.fldTSRStatusID, tblTSRs.fldDealerID, tblTSRs.fldEmergency,tblCustomers.fldFirstName + '' '' + tblCustomers.fldSurname ASfldCustomerNameFROMtblContactReasonsINNER JOIN tblContacts ON tblContactReasons.fldContactID =tblContacts.fldContactIDINNER JOIN tblCustomers ON tblContactReasons.fldRegardingID =tblCustomers.fldCustomerIDINNER JOIN tblVehicles ON tblContactReasons.fldVehicleID =tblVehicles.fldVehicleIDRIGHT OUTER JOIN tblTSRs WITH (NOLOCK)LEFT OUTER JOIN tblTSRStatuses ON tblTSRs.fldTSRStatusID =tblTSRStatuses.fldTSRStatusIDLEFT OUTER JOIN tblTSRPriorities ON tblTSRs.fldTSRPriorityID =tblTSRPriorities.fldTSRPriorityID ON tblContacts.fldContactID =tblTSRs.fldContactIDWHERE (GETDATE() <= DATEADD(week, 2, tblTSRs.fldDateEntered))'SET @OrderBy = 'ORDER BY tblTSRs.fldDateEntered'SET @Body = @Body + @WhereClause + @OrderByEXEC (@Body)GOIn this example, the @WhereClause parameter might typically be:' AND (fldDealerID = 9) AND (fldTSRStatusID = 1) 'My question is, is there anything to recommend one method over theother?TIAEdward--The reading group's reading group:http://www.bookgroup.org.uk

SSRS 2005: Report Header Does Not Export To Excel As Page Header

Mar 13, 2008

I need some help. I am writing a report in SSRS 2005 that I then need to export to Excel. When I put a report header I would expect the header to not display in the Excel spreadsheet until the Print Preview or the Print. The report footer works just fine I put some text in the footer, and it shows up in the footer. The header though, shows up as a row in the Excel spreadsheet that then causes columns to merge. How do I get the report header to act like a page header?

Reporting Services :: Subreport Header Is Not Showing Inside A Report With A Header On Its Own?

May 13, 2015

I am making a book-like report, I am using a report that has a header and calling a sub-report that has it's own header. However the sub-report header is not showing on the parent report. Parent report header is prevailing over the sub-report. Is it possible to have both headers displaying?
