SQL DB Access Fails On Vista When UAC On

Oct 9, 2007

We have an application (.Net 2.0) which installs SQL database.
It installs database sucessfully but when I try to connect the databse using other components of the application,
it fails to connect the database.

Everything works fine if I login as username:"Administrator". or UAC off.
I know in vista when UAC on memeber of admin is considered as standard user.

I got solution to add user in sysadmin role.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb326612.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929907

It is per user settings. We want some integrated solution. So our customers wouldn't need to do per user settings.

This is urgent. please help...

Thanks.

SQL Express Uninstall On Vista PC Fails

Jul 9, 2007

I have written a custom executable thats purpose is to find and uninstall a named instance. It works as intended on PC's running XP and Vista with UAC turned off. However when I try to run the exe on a Vista Machine with UAC on, it does not fully remove the named instance.

It leaves behind in the folder path: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQL" three folders: "Data", "LOG", and "Template Data". However it does remove all of the registry entries and all of the services attached to that named instance.

Why oh why does it have permission to remove everything else besides these 3 folders, and how (programmatically) can I give it the proper admin rights?

the code that does all the work from the cmd:

msiexec /x "ProductCode" /passive

The removal of these three folders is important b/c when you try to reinstall the namedinstance it gives an error message saying files already exist inside the "Data" Folder.

SQL Server 2005 Install Fails On Vista

Feb 22, 2007

During the install, I get the following message:

Setup has detected a problem with Microsoft .Net Framework installation and cannot proceed. Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 is either not installed on this system or is corrupt.

I cannot uninstall 2.0, as its part of the Vista. I have tried repairing it.

I tried downloading 2.0 and installing it, but it says that its allready installed.

I was able to install Visual Studio with Sql Server 2005 express.

I am stuck. Is the case that Sql install dosent know about the latest version of 2.0 that came with vista ?

Same Connection String Succeeds From XP, Fails On Vista

Jul 12, 2007

From an XP machine I can get a connection using a Widnows Authentication connection string:

oConnection.ConnectionString="Driver={SQL Server};SERVER=RANDY3PPServer;DATABASE=PPData;UID=;PWD=;"
ret=oConnection.Open

from the Vista machine hosting SQL server express the same connection string fails, but succeeds if the database is changed to master

oConnection.ConnectionString="Driver={SQL Server};SERVER=RANDY3PPServer;DATABASE=master;UID=;PWD=;"

ret=oConnection.Open

How can this be and how do I fix it?

Installation Of SQL Server 2005 + RS Fails On A Vista 64 Bits

Feb 27, 2007

Hello,

I'm trying to install a version of SQL server 2005 with reporting services on a vista 64 bits.

I've a licence for SQL server 2005 standard edition in French, my vista is in French, and I'm using visual studio standard edition in English to develop. I would like to develop reports using SQL server to include these reports in my applications developped with Visual Studio.

Wich version of SQL server should I install ? I've tryed to install SQL server express 2005 with advanced feature SP2 (english version) and then later the standard edition (French version) (each time uninstalling all SQL server components between tries), but I got problems with reporting services each time.

I got first a warming saying than reporting services is 32 bits and IIS is 64 bits, I so allowed IIS to run 32 bits ASP .Net, but after that, I now get a problem of .Net registration in IIS as warming message on the line concerning Reporting services during the install of SQL Server, and it doesn't even offer to install RS on the next window.

I reinstalled the DotnetFX64 to be sure, but still get the same message. If I look in the IIS the application pools are looking me to be normal, with the ASPNET 32 bit code allowed.

SQL Express Installation Fails During Setup, Vista Permission Problem?

Feb 7, 2008

I'll install SQL Server Express SP2 on Vista during my Setup.
But the setup beaks with error 110.
In other articles it sounds like an folder access problem.
On a Custom Action Type 210 i start a application which execute the sqlexpress.exe.
I tried some other codes to impersonate or noImersonate but without success.

But i can not use the unpacked files because size is to large(170MB)

An good Idea would be unpack the setup files during setup to an custom folder with right permissions.
But I dont know how unpack files without GUI (SQLEXPRESS x always show the GUI).

Any Idea???????????

The funny thing here is that it works fine when the installer is run from a network share, ie \testserversetupsetup.exe but when the same folder is burned to a CD or copied to a local folder it fails. I have verified that the folders are identical.

I'm not sure what info is required to pinpoint the problem but here are some log files and a screen shot of the message.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Martin

Is there any way to get more information for when IAuthorizationExtension::CheckAccess fails to grant access to a report item for the current user? Specifically, it would be useful to know:

1. URL of attempted report
2. IP address of user agent
3. Identity of current user
4. Date/Time of the failed attempt

MS ACCESS SSIS Fails On Bad Date In ACCESS

May 11, 2007

I am receiving the following errors while trying to import data from an access database.

[Destination 2 - Amc_C_ARRV [400]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Invalid character value for cast specification".

[Destination 2 - Amc_C_ARRV [400]] Error: There was an error with input column "tSympOnsetDate" (494) on input "Destination Input" (413). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".

[Destination 2 - Amc_C_ARRV [400]] Error: The "input "Destination Input" (413)" failed because error code 0xC020907A occurred, and the error row disposition on "input "Destination Input" (413)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.

The source database has "invalid" dates such as "6/4/199" and "12/23/1899". I am unable to change the data in the source database and have been instructed to load the values as nulls in the SQL destination tables. I tried to do a conditional split using a "ISDATE()" function but that is not a valid function for conditional splits.

What are my options for validating the incoming dates are correct or nulling the dates out that aren't

Thank you in advance,

ADO Interop Access Under Vista

Dec 4, 2006

I am trying to load a
project under VS2005 under Windows Vista that references an ADOX
wrapper that is looking for version 2.8.0.0. The reference fails
because the library is not registered.

I thought maybe
installing MDAC 2.8 would solve my problems, but when I run the
installer for that, it briefly puts up a dialog that it is extracting
files, then it disappears.

Anyone have any ideas?

7399 Access Denied On Vista

Jan 16, 2008

I am trying to import an Excel 2007 file into SQL Server 2005 Express using linked servers. My linked server was created without error as follows:

Linked server: XLWorkbook
Provider: Microsoft Office 12.0 Access Database Engine OLE DB Provider
Product Name: Excel
Data source: D:spreadsheet.xlsx (D: is on the same PC as the SQL Server)
Provider string: Excel 12.0

However, when I tried to import using

select * from OPENQUERY(XLWorkbook, 'Select * From [Sheet1$]')

I get:

Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "XLWorkbook" reported an error. Access denied.

Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

Cannot get the column information from OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "XLWorkbook".

I had previously used the same exact query for Excel 2003 on Windows XP and it worked fine without me having to do anything else like doling out access rights.

What do I have to do to get this to work on Windows Vista (and Office 2007)?

Thanks

Cant Access SQL Server (on Vista) From Other Network PC (XP)

Mar 22, 2007

I have just installed Vista on one of my home network pcs. I also installed Outlook 2005 with Business Contact Manager. It installs an instance of SQL Server Express.

I have created another database on this engine that I need to access from other PCs on my network.

The server address is PCNAMEMSSMLBIZ and I can access the data the database using this name from the the Vista PC (PCNAME).

When I try to acess the database using the same credentials (server, database, username (sa) and password) from an XP PC on the network - it times out and returns an error . My guess is that it is not seeing the database service at all.

I have SQL Server Management Studio installed on the Vista PC and have full access to the instance.

Server authentication is set for SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode.

Can anyone help me?. I need to access the SQL Server from the XP PC.

Do I need to re-install and tell the system to allow me to log on via. an ID/PW?

Is there a vista patch?

Should I re-install XP?

Also, not having this issue with the same SQLE version and an XP machine.

SQL Connection In Vista With Trusted Connection Fails Under Local System Account Until Reboot

Mar 4, 2008

Hi All,

We are using the Windows Task Scheduler as a substitute for the SQL Server Agent, which isn't available in the Express edition. The scheduled task just calls a batch file, which in turn, runs a stored procedure using osql with the -E option for a Trusted Connection.

SQL Server Express has been installed using the defaults, which means the service is running in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account. The scheduled task we create is set to run using the "NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" account.

Now we find that on Windows Vista (tested using Ultimate Edition) that the scheduled task fails to run the stored procedure until the machine is rebooted the first time after installing SQL Server Express. When I say "fail", I mean that the stored procedure isn't executed. The scheduled task however completes and reports no errors. On Windows XP, we do not run into this problem so I suspect it has something to do with the UAC in Vista?

We further found that after installing SQL Server Express and creating the scheduled task in the "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" account, the scheduled task (and stored procedure) runs fine WITHOUT requiring a reboot.

Can anyone explain why a reboot is needed to get SQL Server Express to run the scheduled task correctly under Windows Vista and the SYSTEM account?

Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated.

Setting Up MS Access Data Source In Vista

Apr 26, 2007

I'm trying to set up a user DSN for a MS Access database in Vista. In XP it's usually just a case of going to Admin Tools > Data Sources but I only get the option of SQL Server and SQL Native Client with Vista.
I'm pretty sure I found a way of doing it a while ago by opening another version of Data Sources from the command prompt but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Anyone know how to do this?

ODBC Access Driver Error In Vista

Mar 2, 2007

I am migrating my development environment from XP Pro to Vista, and my website is now serving up the following error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Disk or network error.

The code in question is as follows:

set dbConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
szPath=Server.MapPath("../../../")
szProvider="Driver=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); DBQ=" & szPath
szProvider=szProvider & "database" & szDir & "" & szDB & ".mdb;"
if bDebug then fpDebug.WriteLine("szProvider: " & szProvider)
dbConn.Open szProvider

The error happens on the last line where I try to open the connection. I've tried also using a dbConn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" line, to no avail. The item that is passed to the Open command is

Driver=Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb); DBQ=C:obstuffdatabasedemoHMGA.mdb;

I'm not familiar enough with DNS and IIS to figure this out. Any suggestions -- other than porting over to SQL and .NET? You don't buy a Ferrari when you only drive in a 30 MPH town.

Access 2007 + SQL Server 2005 + Vista X64

Sep 5, 2007

Hello,

I am looking for a solution to the problem named Table was skipped, or export failed. Here's the story:

I have a desktop with Vista Ultimate x64 and Office 2007. I want to export a database from Access MDB (about 2Gb, 110 tables) to SQL Server Express Express (Advanced). The simple solution > upsize wizard.

- create new database
- server name, used trusted connection, some database name
- I select all tables
- I unselect table's attributes
- create new Access server/client application
and every time I have Table was skipped, or export failed. The same thing happens when I create new MDB with one table (some random values)!

The strange thing that on laptop with XP + SQL Sever 2005 Express (Simple) and Access XP upsizing the same database works fine!'

one other issues of a rookie:
I wanted to access a database (randomly created) on Vista with the Access on my laptop. Both PCs are in the same network I can ping both, but when I try to connect to IP_desktopSQLEXPRESS Access posts connection error. Why?

P.S.
When installing SQL Server on Vista I have only a problem with IIS and ASP.NET, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Slow Connection Wirt Access 2003 To SQL Server Under Vista

MS Access Linked Tables To SQL Server 2000 Slow On Vista

Mar 13, 2007

I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.

I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database. The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine. Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.

What gives? I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.

I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.

It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables. Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

DB Access Works In Debug But Fails When Hosted

Mar 28, 2007

I have written a intranet page that writes some info into a sql database, basically following the 'SQL Server 2005 Express for Beginners' video. When I debug the application from within 'Visual Web Develop 2005 express' it works fine entries are entered into the DB and I can then edit the db using the admin page. But when I host the site using IIS I doesn't work, submissions to the database seem to fail I can see the DB in the admin page but if I try to edit them or delete them it fails. What could I doing wrong could I be missing a setting in IIS? Any ideas??Here's my webconfig if that helps at all:  <?xml version="1.0"?><configuration xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/.NetConfiguration/v2.0">    <connectionStrings>        <add name="studentprofilesConnectionString1" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|studentprofiles.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>    </connectionStrings>    <system.web>        <roleManager defaultProvider="AspNetWindowsTokenRoleProvider" />  <compilation debug="true" defaultLanguage="c#" /></system.web></configuration>

Fails When Use MS Access Datasourse And Ran Form SQL Job (Fine In IDE)

Dec 19, 2007

Hi,

I have created a relatively simple SISS package for MS SQL server 2005 SP1, the package runs without issue when started from the development environment, but fails when ran via a SQL Job.

I have other SISS jobs which run without any problems, the difference with this one is that it doesn€™t just access data the the MS SQL server databases, but it also accesses an external MS Access 2003 database (emptys tables then repopulates based on data in MS SQL)

The database is held on a network share, so I would imagine the issue is that the SQL job is ran under a different security context. Originally it was ran under €œSERVERNAMESYSTEM€?, but I created a new credential on the server giving it my own username and password, I then added a proxy to the server which used the new credietial and was given access to all sub systems.

The SQL job step was setup to run under this proxy, but still failed even though the user name on the credentials had access to the MS Access database on the network share & also matched the package CreatureName, allowing the data to be read as EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey was set in the package.

The SISS package was created by using the wizard, no ODBC connection was setup on the server.
The job history shows €œExecuted as user: ADMINusername. The package execution failed. The step failed.€?
I have also tried this with a protection level of ServerStorage

Any sugestions?

Accessing MS Access When Running On Server Fails

Feb 5, 2008

Hello:

I have a package which runs fine from the client but not the server (see error below). I am logged into the client with my domain account, and the package runs under a proxy using that same domain account (for now). The MS Access db I am trying to pull from is on a non-domain computer, and I have created a Y: mapped drive on both the client and server that access a share on that machine where the Access database lives--I created the mapped drive using the "different user" option, and used a local account on the non-domain computer to create the mapped drives.

On the server, when logged in as my domain account, I can use the y:MyDB.mdb you can see below in Start | Run to hit the Access database. Why can't the package also see this file when running on the server?

MS Access Destination Fails Package When File 'in Use'

Nov 30, 2007

Hello,
For packages where an MS Access database is the destination, what are some ways to detect whether or not the file is 'in use'? I know there is a lock file associated with Access databases. Could it be as simple as using something from the FileSystem Object to discover whether or not there is a lock file with the same name as the destination database? I'd like to stop the package if the file is in use.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your help!

Remote Connection To SSIS Fails With Access Is Denied

May 24, 2007

I'm new to SSIS and I'm having problems getting a remote connection to the SSIS service using Management Studio on my workstation. If I terminal Service onto the Server I have no problems connecting to SSIS, but if I try to connect remotely I get the "Access is denied" error message. I have completed the following steps:

To configure rights for remote users on Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP
1. If the user is not a member of the local Administrators group, add the user to the Distributed COM Users group. You can do this in the Computer Management MMC snap-in accessed from the Administrative Tools menu.
2. Open Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Component Services to start the Component Services MMC snap-in.
3. Expand the Component Services node in the left pane of the console. Expand the Computers node, expand My Computer, and then click the DCOM Config node.
4. Select the DCOM Config node, and then select MsDtsServer in the list of applications that can be configured.
5. Right-click on MsDtsServer and select Properties.
6. In the MsDtsServer Properties dialog box, select the Security tab.
7. Under Launch and Activation Permissions, select Customize, then click Edit to open the Launch Permission dialog box.
8. In the Launch Permission dialog box, add or delete users, and assign the appropriate permissions to the appropriate users and groups. The available permissions are Local Launch, Remote Launch, Local Activation, and Remote Activation. The Launch rights grant or deny permission to start and stop the service; the Activation rights grant or deny permission to connect to the service.
9. Click OK to close the dialog box. Close the MMC snap-in.
10. Restart the Integration Services service.

But I still get the Access is denied error from my workstation??

I have Power User rights on the server and I'm a sysadmin in the database instance. The SSIS packages I am trying to access are stored in the database. If I add myself to the local administrators group on the server I CAN get remote access, but this is not an acceptable solution in our production environment.

Thanks for any help
