SQL Server 2008 :: How To Add Locations To Open File Dialog Box In SSMS
Apr 20, 2010
When I go to open a file in SSMS, the Open File dialog box appears. In the left side of that box, there is a panel containing shortcuts to various locations: Desktop, My Projects, and My Computer. I would like to add some shortcuts to folder that I use in this area, but I haven't been able to figure out how. how to do this?
Hi, SQL2K+SP4 When I load up Query Analyzer and click File -> Open to open up a query file, the open file dialog is always sorted by - i don't know alphabetically. How can I set the default to open up with files ordered alphabetically?
I have a SQL Server 2005 database file (a .mdf file) that I am trying to open in SQL Server Management Studio so I can add a field to a table, but I am unable to open the file. I can't say that I really understand how SQL Server handles these databases. I especially don't understand the "attaching" and "detaching" operations.
I am working in VB.Net 2008 now, but my background is with VB6 using the JET engine. It was just so straightforward using the JET engine, but seems so much more complicated with SQL Server. I am trying to use .mdf files the same way I used .mdb files. I want my application to find the database file, "attach to it", and let me manipulate it.
At one time I was able to open my database in Sql Server Management Studio and edit the design of the database. The application still works but I am no longer able to modify the database because I cannot attach to it in Management Studio.
Here is a big clue: the files are no longer in the special folder anymore, which is c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA. I might have deleted the files, stupidly, thinking they were redundant. I still have the .mdf file (and the _log.ldf file) on my hard drive and the application can still open it, but when I try to use Management Studio to attach to the .mdf file, I get this error:
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
An error occurred when attaching the database(s). Click the hyperlink in the Message column for details.
here are the details:
Unable to open the physical file "c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATAHEALSExamsSQL.mdf". Operating system error 2: "2(The system cannot find the file specified.)". (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
Indeed the file is not there, but why is Mgmt Studio looking there? Why doesn't it just open the file where it is? What can I do to get it back? I even copied the files to c:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLDATA? I get the same error.
Here is another clue: In Management Studio, when I right-click Databases, and chose Attach, it brings up a dialog. There I click "Add" to get another dialog in which I will select a database, but before the dialog appears I get this error:
Locate Database Files - KURANT-WIN7SQLEXPRESS C:UsersJason KurantDesktop Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists.
If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box.
I am running sql script inside job.But sql is not saving the results in the file which i specified('Unable to open Step output file'). I tried same thing on different server, it works fine. Both are are 2008 R2.Is there any server level setting that i have to look at.On both servers i logged in as sal. Why is it working on server1 ,but not on server2?

I had SQl Express version installed previously and everything worked. I could connect to one server running SQL Express and a different server running full up SQL 2005 enterprise version.
I uninstalled All SQL express programs and installed tools from SQL 2005 developer.
I have rebooted, started the program directly (not using a link of any kind) and all attempts fail. After dismissing the error msg the tool opens and I can run queries agains the DB but the database engines and related tables do not show.
My work station is Windows XP with SP2 installed.
I have googled the problem extensively and tried solutions found but none have solved the problem.
I have an invoice table with customer, date, sales location, and invoice total. I want to total the invoices by location by customer and see what location sells the most to each customer. My table looks like this.
when i want to open sql it show me error message and when i try again with ctrl+n it works but not complite! i have both .NET2003 and 2005 in my computer under mssql2005 windows2003EP

When adding an SSIS step to a SQL Server Agent job, when selecting the location of a config file, the dialog lets you select from the database server you're working with. If selecting the location of the package itself (when the source is File System), the dialog lets you select from the machine where Management Studio is sitting instead of from the database server. Is that intentional? And if so, why? Should I just use a fully qualified file name for the package location rather than one using a drive letter?
Is there a way to render the PDF report in the same broswer window you just called it from without the Open/Save dialog box coming up. The report is being call directly by URL parameters for PDF format
If you write a query that outputs XML, you'll have a long string in the Results window/tab that is also a link. Clicking on this link opens a new tab in SSMS with the formatted XML string easier to read.
My issue is that clicking on the link opens the "formatted XML string" tab ON THE SAME tab as my code and no way to go back to my code after that ... I need to reload the query from disk, if saved, to erase the "formatted XML" window.
I have to set up log shipping from Prod server "A" to 2 different DR servers ("B" and "C")...What do i have to do differently (or additional) using the GUI (ie not using Tsql Scripts) to accomplish this, in addition to the steps that are done to log ship to just one DR server?
On a windows 2003 server R2 x64, i had the Framework.net 3.5, Sql Server 2005 express (instance s423553 on NT SERVICENetwork) and Visual Web Developper 2008.
I installed Sql Server Express 2008 Express (install .SQLexpress with the local account sqlserv10). The first time (with the account NTSERVICENetwork), it failed. I uninstalled it and Sql Server Management Studio 2005. The second time, the install end properly. But, can't find SSMS. On a MsSql2008 microsoft page, i've found a link for SSMS 2005. So i installed it.
But, on this server, Sql Server Management Studio Express 2005 does not work with Sql Server 2008. I tried to use the 2008 Instance with Visual Web Developper 2008 but it didn't work (only compatible with sql server 2000, 2005....).
When I execute the following command, I get the output truncated to 79 characters, including three dots (as an ellipsis, I suppose).
EXEC master..xp_cmdshell 'powershell.exe "Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255"'When I execute the core command directly in Powershell, whether the text or ISE version, it works correctly, with or without the out-string -width command.
Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255What does it take to get SSMS to not truncate my output strings?
I have several users with an unusual problem with SSMS 2012. When they attempt to connect to a database using the "Connect to Server" dialog box, the connection just hangs. Sometimes after about 15 minutes the connection will be successful. Other attempts simply spin seemingly endlessly. Users experiencing this issue are both running SSMS 2012 on Win 7 Pro (64 bit). The following troubleshooting steps have been tried:
1. When the user runs SSMS "As Administrator" the connections work almost instantly. (Elevating privileges is not a solution in our environment) 2. Wireshark shows that SSMS does not try to hit the SQL server when the user experiencing this issue clicks connect. 3. I can create a new virgin user on the PC and that login experiences the same problem. 4. A complete rip and re-install of SSMS 2012 does not resolve the issue.
I have a specific requirement. I need to insert the DML statements executed from Management Studio into a SQL table. We have SQL Server 2008 R2 and 2012 instances.
is there a way to see the data of a table variable in the SSMS debugger? For example, if I set a breakpoint in SSMS and look at a populated table variable named @MyTable in the Locals tab at the bottom of the IDE, a value of "(table)" is displayed. There does not appear to be a way to expand or drill into this variable in the debugger to see the data. Do you know if there's a way to do this through the debugger or do you use an alternate approach when using the SSMS debugger?
SQL Server 2012 Replication. The command prompt instance of the replication is being run as the same user as the SSMS "version" using the runas option. With SSMS the error is that the client is missing a privilege. There is no error when it runs from the command prompt. All runs well.
We have reinstalled the replication feature. We have gone through several MSDN articles that indicate exactly what privileges (both within the DB and in Windows) that service account should have. None have worked Incidentally, when I create a new publication and indicate that the SQL Server Agent be used , the publication runs.
Because of a performance problem, somebody has given me a script which came from a SSRS report.
The code as supplied does not work when multivalued parameters are used.
Testing/tuning/building in SSMS is far superiour than in SSRS. So that's why I like to use SSRS for building the code/script/sql-statement. Offcourse parameters have to be set correctly. (That is no problem). Splitting of the multivalued parameter is not a problem either.
I'm trying to quantify the number of times folks use SQL Server Management Studio to change client data in one of our production databases. Does SQL Server keep this statistic? How do I get to this data?
I know I've seen documentation on this but I can't find it at the time. What's the recommended file locations for a SQL install.. System and Data on a RAID drive and logs on a separate drive that's mirrored..? Oh and if anyone has links to this info let me know also.
I am trying to split the log and data files between two drives on a newSQL-Server 2000 installation. I followed the instructions from the MSarticle 224071 (Moving SQL Server databases to a new location withDetach/Attach).Unfortunalty, when I try to move the Master database, as perinstructions, access to SQL-Sever is lost;the service will never startagain. I've tried this twice after re-installing with the same results.Anyone have any ideas as to what is going wrong?Tim
Here is what I am trying to accomplish. I need to move *.pdf files from a local directory into a local staging directory, then from the Staging directory FTP them up to the customers site. Then move the files from the staging directory to an archive directory. I can do this fine as long as all values are static in SSIS, I need help to figure out hoe to do this using variables. The Directories to be used are to be supplied by the DB all that is give in the directory itself all files in the directory need to be moved. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Mike
Hi, I have to create a datebase for an assignment and I am using MSSQL and need a little bit of help for something that I don't think can actually be done. Basically I have an artist table. Now each artist may well have a website of their own where their biography can be found. In my artist table I have an artist_bio field where I want the URL of the artists bio to be placed and only the URL. So for example I would want www.iamanartist.com/mybio to be put into that field. So I was wondering if there was a constraint that could do this? I don't think there is because URLS can be so complicated but if someone could tell me whether it is or isn't possible I would be really grateful. I am also wanting to do something similar with the location of a hardcopy of their work. So I have a digital_images table with a location field where the loaction of their work will be on a harddrive. Is this possible or not as well? Cheers for any help you can give, Liam
I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 and Visual Studio 2008. However, after several installations and un-installations. I could no longer use the SSIS to create New Projects. I cleaned out the registry with a Registry cleaner from Wise. I deleted the SQL Server and Visual Studio folders as well.
When I create a New SSIS Project, I immediately get an error as follows:
"Microsoft Visual Studio" "An error prevented the view from loading." "Additional information:" "Specified Module cannot be Found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)" "(System.Windows.Forms)"
What this means is that I cannot create any new SSIS Projects.
I've have a simple question. After running the SSIS deployment utility to install a couple of SSIS packages into a SQL Server, is there a way of determining programmatically (at some later stage) where the dependency files (in my case a simple xml configuration file) for the SSIS packages were installed (if the user chose not to install it into the default location).
I'm trying to store the output of my stored procedure into a temp table, which takes Table Type as Input.
CREATE TYPE [dbo].[Employee] AS TABLE( [Field] [varchar](50) NULL, [Criteria] [varchar](50) NULL, [Value] [varchar](50) NULL ) declare @Employee dbo.Employee insert into @Employee values(N'Salary',N'is greater than',N'3520')
DECLARE @sql NVARCHAR(MAX)
SET @sql = 'SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(''SQLNCLI'',''Server=localhost;Trusted_Connection=yes;'',''EXEC dbo.uspGetEmployee ' + @Employee + ')'
I need to create a stored procedure which uses output of the above stored procedure. Hence, I don't want to put declare and insert into OPENROWSET as I get those values as parameter to the new procedure.
I have a package and added a configuration file to it to hold settings such as connection strings etc.
When I open the package up in the designer and check where the configuration file is from, it likes to specify it with a full path like this:
\myserverprojectspackageslah.xml
Where blah.xml is the configuration file and the package file is in the same exact directory.
This creates an issue when I use build and then try to install the package on a server. When installing, the server tries to read the config from \myserverprojectspackageslah.xml which it can not.
Conversely I've tried editing the location in the designer changing it to just be "blah.xml". Then after using the build option I am able to install the package successfully on the server (it can not find the xml file).
However when I then load the package later in the designer to try to edit or chagne it, the designer complains that the "configuration file could not be loaded" and it can't find it even though it is in the same directory that the package definition file is in.
This has been happening to me since I started using Configuration files. I use one XML config file that stores Machine Specific settings and one connection string to my Metadata database. The problem is the database connection.
When I set the conection in the Configuation file, save, close and reopen the package, a dialog box opens with the title "Synchronize Connection Strings".
To reproduce the problem:
1. Ceate New SSIS Project 2. New Data Source Localhost.Adventureworks 3. In Package.dtsx create an New Connection from Data Source... 4. Choose AdventureWorks 5. Save Package 6. Close Package 7. Open Package
There is no problem at this point.
8. Enable Package Configurations 9. Create a new XML Configuration File 10. Give it a name and a location 11. Click Next 12. Under Connection Managers Click Adventure Work 13. Click Next 14. Give it a Name 15. Click Finish
16. Save 17. Close 18. Open
Uh-Oh!
"Synchronize Connection Strings" Dialog Box Hare is what it tells me.
Connection Adventure Works
Data Source Adventure Works
Old Connection String Data Source=.;User ID=;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Integration Security=True;
Old Connection String
Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Integated Security=True
19. Press OK
20. Save Package 21. Close 22. Open
Uh-Oh, still there.
Has anyone else run into this? If so, how can I get around it?
Have installed SQL 2008 on Windows 2008 and have come across a strange issue.
When connecting to the Report Server cvia SSMS to enable "My Reports" (for example) the Report Server Properties are greyed out and we cannot alter them. This occurs when logged on both locally & remotely to the Win 2008 server.
Interestingly, we have another (XP Pro) box with SQL 2008 on it. If we connect to the Win 2008 SQL report server from the XP machine's SSMS, then we have full control and can access and change the report server properties on the Win 2008 server.
The relevant domain accounts are in the Admin group on the Win 2008 server and the XP Server so we are confused as to why we cannot edit the Win 2008 report server properties locally.
If I can select an input flat file via a dialog box, or it is necessary to either hardcode the file name or change the filename everytime to a similar format; &How can a query be run and processed in SQL right after input of a flat file to continue?
