SQL Server 2008 :: How To Recognize And Start A Job If Another Job Step Is Successful

Jun 1, 2015

I have a maintenance job which has many job steps - checkdb, backup, rebuild index, etc...

I was asked to setup a job which will copy all backup files to a central location.

Now I wrote the script and its working good (part of a new job step)

But, I am now thinking to add some more logic in the job step:-

that is, if the previous job (server maintenance) is successfully completed with the backup job (if completed successfully), then only the copy to location job will start, if the other job step is failed, my copy bkp job will not run.

SQL Server 2008 :: SSIS - How To Alert When Step Fails

Jun 12, 2015

I have a simple SSIS package that imports an Excel Spreadsheet into a table. The column heading got changed, so the package failed, as expected, but I would like an alert or some way to make the scheduled job show "failed". I tried putting an event handler on the :Data Flow" step to send an email, but it didn't work.

I would like to figure out the event handler problem, but more important to have the job show as failed.

For some reason the Scheduled job shows "success" even though the SSIS package failed. A better solution is to make the scheduled job itself fail, based on the package failing.

I have installed the November CTP of SQL Server Express 2008 but the service will not start. The error log displays the following error which implies that it is trying to open a file on by CD/DVD drive. I have checked the service properties and all the parameters point to c:

SQL Server Agent Job Step Fails When Creating A SQL Server Integration Serveices Type Of Step

Hi

I posted this on the sql server security forums too. Here is the error that i get when i change the type of the step to ssis

This error pops up right after i change the type of the step to "SQL Server Intergration Services Package"

I have made the following configurations:

The user group (windows group) that the user belongs has the following roles in msdb :

db_dtsadmin
db_dtsltuser
db_dtsoperator
SQLAgentOperatorRole
SQLAgentReaderRole
SQLAgentUserRole

i have made a proxy to sql server agent which has the following subsystems :

"SQL Server Integration Services Provider" the proxy is tied to the same login which has those SQLagent and dts roles in msdb database.

Im using windows authentication and the user that logs into the sql server is in the same group that i have set all of the rights.

Ps. Clearly im missing some role or right somewhere because as soon as i give the group sysadmin role then all the users in that group can create SSIS steps in the agent.

Ps. Ps. I have been living under the impression that i dont have to give sysadmin rights to people that create ssis packages and schedule then with the agent.

SQL Server 2008 :: Cannot Start Analysis Services On Two Instances

May 10, 2012

I have noticed that analysis services has stopped on two instance on my server.For the first instance, I go to configuration manager and try to start the service I get the standard service did not respond in a timely fashion error, if I change the account that runs it from the domain user account to local system it starts up fine, but try changing it back I get the following WMI error: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105], I see this error in google but it always refers to the agent and not analysis services. In the application log, I see the following error...The service cannot be started: Message-Handling subsystem: The message manager for the defaul locale cannot be found. The locale will be changed to US English. File system error: The following error occurred during a file operation: Access is denied. But access denited to what? The services had been up and running for a while and nothing on the server has changed.

As on the second instance gives me the following error in the application log...The file <path>CryptKey.bin' could nor be opened. Please check the file for permissions or see if other applications locked it.

Then further up...The service cannot be started: Message-Handling subsystem: The message manager for the defaul locale cannot be found. The locale will be changed to US English. File system error: The following error occurred while opening the file <path>CryptKey.bin.

I should say the <path> part is me, saving typing not part of the error. And again, if I change the account running the service to local system if all changes and starts fine, but if I try to change it back I get WMI Error: The process terminated unexpectedly [0x8007042b]. If I hit 'apply' a second time I get another WMI Error, except this time it says 'The server threw an exception. [0x80010105].

SQL Server 2008 :: Unable To Start Agent Due To Blocked Access

Jun 28, 2015

Had some big problems with my SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 during the last maintenance running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise ( upgraded from Standard). I'm getting the following error,

"SQL Server blocked access to procedure 'dbo.sp_sqlagent_has_server_access' of component 'Agent XPs' because this component is turned off as part of the security configuration for this server. A system administrator can enable the use of 'Agent XPs' by using sp_configure. For more information about enabling 'Agent XPs', see "Surface Area Configuration" in SQL Server Books Online."

I did a google search and found others with the problem but the resolution isn't working for me. I ran the following commands, heck I ran them multiple times. No errors come back running these commands. But the same error keeps happening, I even restart the service and then the server again.

sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1;
GO
RECONFIGURE;
GO
sp_configure 'Agent XPs', 1;
GO
RECONFIGURE
GO

The msdb got too big for the disk it was on. I had maintenance plans to clear out the all of histories but I didn't think of the mail items. When I finally saw this problem I tried clearing them out using the stored procedures only with it finally failing because the transaction log got full. Since we didn't have a lot of jobs scheduled I decided to just recreate the msdb. So I scheduled a maintenance window, download SQL Server Service Pack 3.

my steps are as follows:
->diff backup of msdb
->stopped the service and started it again with: NET START MSSQLSERVER /T3608
->detached msdb with: SQLCMD -E -SP-SRVR-SQL-01 -dmaster -Q"EXEC sp_detach_db msdb"
->moved it off the drive
->restarted the service without any startup flags
->recreated msdb with: SQLCMD -E -SP-SRVR-SQL-01 -i"D:Microsoft SQL ->ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLInstallinstmsdb.sql" -o"D:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLInstallinstmsdb62715.out"

I looked at the log file and there were no actual error messages so I applied service pack 3 and restarted server after it installed, was actually prompted to restart. In my tests I was never prompted to restart the server.Now I never started the agent service after recreating the msdb database since I knew it wasn't on the same version. I just went directly to the latest SP. Our applications are running fine but now I cant do scheduled backups.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Default Start / End Date Parameters To First / Last Day Of Current Month

Feb 12, 2015

I have a SSRS report using 2008 R2. It prompts the user for the start and end dates. This all works. But now I want the start date parm to default to the first day of the current month and the end date parm to default to the last day of the current month.In the new query window in SQL Server Management Studio, I can run this chunk of code to get the first day of current month:

SELECT DATEADD(MONTH, DATEDIFF(MONTH, 0, GETDATE()), 0)

And this code to get the last day of current month:

SELECT DATEADD(DAY, -(DAY(DATEADD(MONTH, 1, GETDATE()))),
DATEADD(MONTH, 1, GETDATE()))

But I don't know how to do this in SSRS 2008. How can I make my start / end parms to get these values.

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Calculate Number Of Days Since Start Of Fiscal Year

Jul 29, 2015

Our fiscal year starts on July 1st. Each month they call a period - so July is period 1, August is period 2, etc.

They are wanting a report that pulls numbers for a given period. There are parameters for them to select the fiscal year and the fiscal period, and then it calculates the numbers for that period. That part works fine.

Now they want me to do some calculations, and one of them is to divide one of the numbers by the # of days since the fiscal year. So if they choose July, it would be 31 days. If they choose August, it would be 61 days, etc. How can I set this up to calculate the number of days when they really aren't entering a start date, it's just a fiscal year and period.

Is there a way to calculate a date field that is 07/01/xxxx where xxxx is the fiscal year they chose? Also a way to calculate a date field that would be the last date of the month for the fiscal period and year they chose?

I suppose I could add 2 other parameters where they enter the start of the current fiscal year, and the last day of the period they're running it for, and use a datediff to calculate that. Just seems kind of redundant.

SQL Server 2008 :: Show Single Placement Dates As Start And End Date For Asset

May 24, 2015

I have a table called 'AssetPlacements' that shows the dates when certain objects (AssID) were placed at certain locations (LocID).

ID AssID LocID PlacementDate
1112015-05-01
2122015-05-06
3132015-05-09
4212015-05-03
5222015-05-07
6232015-05-11

I'd like to show the assets with a start date and end date for the placement of the asset.

The start date to be the placement date and the end date to be the next placement date of the asset.

Where there is no next placement date to then show the end date as the current date, so hopefully the table will show as the following.

ID AssID LocID StartDate EndDate
1112015-05-01 2015-05-06
2122015-05-06 2015-05-09
3132015-05-09 [GetDate()]
4212015-05-03 2015-05-07
5222015-05-07 2015-05-11
6232015-05-11 [GetDate()

I'm guessing some sort of recursion is required here to produce this.

SQL 2012 :: Agent Job History Shows Step Still Running But Shows Start And End Times?

Jul 1, 2015

I have a SQL Agent job that runs at 4:15 in the morning. The job has 5 steps, each step only runs if the preceding step succeeds. The second step, which calls an SSIS package that does the main processing, appears to finish as it goes on to the next step; however, when looking in 'View History' there are 2 entries for this step - the first one shows it as still running (Circled Green Arrow) but with a start and end time. The second entry says the job succeeded.

I have been seeing conflicts, such as deadlocks, with later jobs. I suspect this job is causing the conflicts - maybe the package is still running in the background instead of having actually completed?

what conditions a job step my be showing in the job history as both running AND completed successfully?

Reporting Problems W/ MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step By Step To MS

Apr 26, 2007

I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:

select * from vProductProfitability

where year = 2003 and

MonthNumberOfYear = 1

The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.

I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.

This humble grasshopper seeks wisdom.

SQL Server Management Studio Express Doesn't Recognize .mdf File

Feb 25, 2008

Hi,
I just started working with Visual Web Devloper 2005 Express Developer and sql server 2005 Express Edition. My web is hosted with 1and1.com. They have informed me that I can't upload the database generated by the developer software and from what I understand, I will import those files into the mssqlserver database on my site. From my limited understanding, this is done from the backup file that is created from my local sql database. I didn't see a way to do that within VWD 2005 so I downloaded SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I opened it I chose the SQLServer (sqlExpress) located on my computer. The connection seems to work fine. However when I go to open a file and open the database that is in my web I get an error that states that there is no editor and to be sure the aplication for file type .mdf has been installed.

I'm not sure where to go from here or if I'm even on the correct path.

Thanks,
Leesha

Execute Package Results Different To Step By Step Execution - Uses Raw File

Jan 31, 2007

I have a package that has multiple data flow tasks. At the end of a task, key data is written into a raw file (file name stored in a variable) that is used as a data source for the next task. Each task requires a success from the preceding task.

Here's the rub:

If I execute the entire package, the results of the package (number of records of certain tasks) differs significantly from when I execute each step in the package in turn (many more records e.g. 5 vs 350).

I get the feeling that the Raw file is read into memory before it is flushed by the previous task, or that the next task begins preparation tasks too early.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am running on Server 2003 64 (although the same thing happens when deployed on a Server 2003 32 machine)

Thanks

Step-by-step Deployment Of Single-user Database App?

Mar 2, 2008

Hi!

I hope the answer is as simple as the question -- but after reading all the documentation I could find (understand?) and a lot of posts here, I'm no closer to achieving the goal.

I have a Visual C# app, DAYTRACKER, developed in VS2005. It uses a database with several tables constructed using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.

I want to deploy the app plus the database plus SQL Express to another machine, to be used by a single user (the administrator) with no need for network connectivity of any kind.

What I have so far is:
1. The application is successfully deployed from a CD-ROM, having used the Publish process within VS2005, and opens on the new machine -- without database connectivity, however.
2. SQL Express is successfully deployed (it deployed as a 'prerequisite' when I went through the Publish process in VS2005)
3. I manually copied the database's .mdf and .mdl files, using SQL Server Managers 'Copy Database' function, then transferred the copies to the new machine into the ..MSSQL.1MSSQLdata folder (where they appear along with the master.mdg, mastlog.ldf etc files)

Now, the DAYTRACKER application's DAYTRACKERConnectionString under 'Settings' in the VS2005 studio reads 'Data Source=DELL3;Initial Catalog=DayTracker;Integrated Security=True' (which are the appropriate parameters for the machine, DELL3, on which I wrote the program.)

The problem, of course, is that SQL Express on the new machine doesn't connect the application to the database. When I go to the 'SQL Server Configuration Manager' and go to the 'SQL Server 2005 Services' and double-click on the 'SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)' icon (the service is running) and the user is logged on using 'Local System Account'. Under the 'Service' tab the Host Name is 'MUSIC' (which is the name of the new machine I've installed the app onto -- which of course is not the name - DELL3 - that the app's connection string is expecting). Under the 'Advanced' tab, I've tried correcting the name of the Startup Parameters default .mdf and .mdl entries to ..DayTracker.mdf and ..DayTracker_log.mdl, but the server won't start up after I make the changes.

What I'm hoping for: a step-by-step way of doing this type of deployment, preferable getting it all onto one CD-ROM, and installing it on the new machine so that it all works seamlessly from the start, not requiring any 'tweaking' of the SQLServer Express settings by the end-user.

But I'll take pretty much anything that fixes the specific db connectivity problem I've described.

Thank you very much.

John F.

SQL Server 2005 Restore Is Hung After Successful Completion

Feb 5, 2008

Greetings,

I am trying to restore a SQL Server 2005 database from a backup file and experiencing a hanging issue after its "finished"

I am doing this in SQL Server Management Studio, generating the following SQL for Restore:

RESTORE DATABASE [AdventureWorks2]
FROM DISK = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBackupAdventureWorks.bak'
WITH FILE = 1, NORECOVERY, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10
GO

When I run this on the machine i originated the backup with (creating AdvWorks2) it runs fine in no time.

When I run this command on another SQL Sever 2005 instance on another host. It appears to run fine, and I see progress going up to 100% and it says "Restore Completed Successfully"

BUT, for some reason, the database in object explorer is stuck with a "(Restoring...)" label attached to its tree item and I am unable to perform any activities on that database instance. It claims, it's in the middle of a restore operation! again this is after it had reached 100% on progress and declared successfull completion.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

(Note: Both instances are SQL Server 2005 - Service Pack 2)

Thanks,
-ali

query is running well and data is coming correctly if I run this on Query designer.and date format must be YYYY-MM-DD.but when I try to run through on run time then the date control is showing format dd/mm/yyyy.

I change the regional settings of windows and SharePoint site to English(United States). and when I select date control it is also putting date in format like "YYYY-MM-DD'. and in that format report is working well in Query designer view.But on run time still it is not working.

This behavior occurs when executed either in VS 2013 or from within SQL Server. No error messages are thrown in either the debug window or the log output (log is capturing everything). The only thing that occurs differently on this package as compared to another package I am able to execute successfully is that a command line window briefly flashes when the package cancels itselfβ€”but it is gone so fast I cannot read it. The last several lines of the debug output are as follows:

-----------------
Information: 0x40043006 at Merge Info, SSIS.Pipeline: Prepare for Execute phase is beginning.
Information: 0x40043007 at Merge Info, SSIS.Pipeline: Pre-Execute phase is beginning.
Information: 0x402090DC at Merge Info, All Users CSV [2]: The processing of file "C:...AllUsers.csv" has started.
Information: 0x400490F4 at Merge Info, Lookup Org [47]: Lookup Org has cached 957 rows.
Information: 0x400490F5 at Merge Info, Lookup Org [47]: Lookup Org has cached a total of 26719 rows.

[Code] ....

What circumstances an SSIS package would cancel itself without throwing any errors?
