Walk-through Of A Distributed SSRS Environment Installation/configuration?

Apr 30, 2008

I'm using Virtual PC on my WinXP PC, with two W2K3 environments runnings as Virtual PC guests. My goal is to use these virtual servers to emulate a distributed SSRS environment--prior to setting up a similar environment on physical servers.

One of the W2K3 guests is my database server; the other W2K3 guest is my report server. Just like with a physical SSRS environment, there are many choices that need to be made during the installation and configuration--any one of which, it seems, can prevent the environment from working properly.

Currently, I'm struggling with getting my virtual distributed SSRS environment to work. I could go into the details, but I figured I'd ask a basic question first: Is anyone aware of a book, magazine article, blog, etc. that goes through a distributed SSRS installation--listing the requirements, discussing the choices, considering the implications, etc.?

Off the top of my head, such a walk-through would ideally cover networking configuration issues (Virtual PC or otherwise), Active Directory considerations, Windows Firewall settings between the servers, SSRS-related service account selections, authentication between the servers, etc.

If no one has produced such a walk-through (!), I'd be happy to write one so that others don't have to deal with the same struggles I'm currently dealing with....but I'd need your help.

Replication Environment Configuration Help!!

Oct 24, 2007

I have a production server log shipping to a secondary server every 30 minutes (both SQL 2000), which the second server is used for both a warm standby server and for reporting from users. Issue: the log shipping locks the DB so reporting can't be done until the load is finished, the load to the second set of databases has taken up to 15 minutes to finish allowing the users only 15 minutes to run reports, this is not acceptable. The server also needs to be used for DR.

I am looking for another solution, I can't use Transactional Log shipping as not all of the tables in the databases have a primary key identified. So, I am looking for a real-time or near real-time reporting server that is more available to running reports and a warm standby server for Disaster recovery. I am trying to figure out what SQL Server 2000 has to provide (or even 2005 or 2008?) or I am also looking at some third party software, but not sure what is the best for a reasonable price.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks....JB

Package Configuration With Environment Variable

Aug 9, 2007

Hi,

I have issues with the Connection Manager in the SSIS package when using package configs thru environment variable.

Here goes..

SSIS package1:

Connections used: devcon1, devcon2 - Dev Env and testcon1,testcon2 - Test Env. Now using all four. Ideally either devcons or testcons should reside at a time.

Environment variable:

Pckg_config = <location of config file which has testcon1 and testcon2>

I need to use only devcon1 and devcon2 in Dev env. In test i need to use only testcon1 and testcon2
Hence i set the values of devcons in devEnv.dtsconfig and testcons in testEnv.dtsconfig

Now i remove both testcons from ssis package. If i try to run the Test Env and my testcons which are marked in testenv.dtsconfig are not found as connections in ssis package then the ssis gives error wanting for those connections.

SSIS maintains the connections in the Connection Manager per package. Although internally it is a pool of connections.

Ideally i should be able to play around with the connection at run time. My package now works, if it is deployed with all the devcons and testcons together. However, ideally it should be either devcons or testcons. I am trying to be more explicable to reach to the masses here.

Am i doing something wrong? All your efforts in solving this puzzle will be greatly appreciated. Please participate.

Thanx,Tushar

Package Configuration + Environment Variable

Jul 17, 2006

We are using Package configuration with environment variables. The problem we are having that if we try to open project from other PC (PC 2) it gives the error:

Error 1 Error loading F0005.dtsx: Failed to decrypt protected XML node "DTS:Password" with error 0x8009000B "Key not valid for use in specified state.". You may not be authorized to access this information. This error occurs when there is a cryptographic error. Verify that the correct key is available. z:visual studio 2005projectssales data martextract to staging areaF0005.dtsx 1 1

We are using environment variable named DWConfig and have configured correct path in each PC. If we edit package configuration in PC 2 and go thru the same procedures without any amendments the errors is removed for that PC and if, again we OPEN that project in PC 1 it gives same error and if we go thru package configuration wizard again error is removed.

Can any one tell me is there any solution of that problem?

Note: Our project is saved on server (neither PC 1 nor PC 2)

Anas.

Configuration File For Porting From One Environment To Another

Hi,

I'm using connection managers for all the connections i have in my packages in one project. However, if i change from one environment to another, i have to go to each connection manager in each package just to set the connection.

Environment Variable Package Configuration

Dec 17, 2007

Okay - this one is driving me batty.

I have a package that uses an environment variable package configuration of value X for a connection string. I close BIDS. I change the value of the environment variable to value Y. I open BIDS and the package, and the value of my connection string is Y. I save my package with the new configuration. if I look at the dtsx file, I see connection string with value Y. All as expected.

I move the package to my server (I've tried Import package from SSMS, using the deployment manifest, and save copy as). On the server, the environment variable is set to value Y. If I run the package or export it; however, the value of my connection string is X!

Does anyone have any suggestions of things to try or some reason that this is not working?

Thanks,
Jessica

Package Configuration Type - Environment Variable

Feb 19, 2008

Hello All -

Have you ever seen the error message below?

Description: The package path referenced an object that cannot be found: "Package.Variables[User::<variable_name>].Properties[Value]". This occurs when an attempt is made to resolve a package path to an object that cannot be found. End Warning Could not load package "<package_name>" because of error 0xC0010014.

Basically, I create a package variable under my User Namespace and this variable will tell what server the SSIS is running at. We first create a system variable locally and the SQL Server will have a variable with exactly the same name so that the server name will be evaluated through the package variable/package configurations when the SSIS is executing from a SQL Server job.

This way we do not hard code the server name... We always succeeded on doing that with DTS as well as SSIS packages but just now my package is running into this issue...

Since I did not change ANYTHING in the package, I am guessing this is not programming related and that something was changed in the server. However, the DBA was helpless over here and I have no clue of what this error means.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Gabriel.

Integration Services :: The Configuration Environment Variable Was Not Found

2.  An XML Configuration File with a setting of configuration location stored in an enviornmental variable.

3. And finally, an Eveniornmental variable with the setting of ProjectFolderAbsolutePath value, where it is the full path of the project folder.

The project functions normally but everytime I open it I get the following error.

This occurs when a package specifies an environment variable for a configuration setting but it cannot be found. Check the configurations collection in the package and verify that the specified environment variable is available and valid."

SSIS Dynamic Configuration - Environment Variable Problem

Aug 24, 2007

Dear all,

I have a problem with SSIS reading an environment variable after deploying the packages to a server. I explain.

I have an Parent Packages ETL_MAIN_PACKAGE.dtsx that reads the child packages from a record set and loops on it to execute them with the Execute Package Task task. The first child package to be executed is called DIM_PERIODIC.dtsx.

On my local machine, the Parent Package is configured to read its database connections from an XML file SSIS_configfile.config located on my C: drive. The path (C:SSIS_configfile.config) to this file is stored in the environment variable BI_ETL.

When I run the Parent Package inside SSIS only machine, the connections are read and the package executes perfectly. Now, I want to deploy the packages on our server.

I copied the XML configuration file to the server C drive, I created the same environment variable BI_ETL and set its value to C:SSIS_configfile.config and I rebooted the machine (in case).

The execution of the Parent package is managed by a stored procedure. I use xp_cmdshell command. The command line generated is :

cmd.exe /c dtexec /file "C:ETL_DeploymentETL_MAIN_PACKAGE.dtsx" /CHECKPOINTING OFF /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /SET Package.Variables["P_PACKAGE_PATH"].Value;"C:ETL_Deployment" /SET Package.Variables["P_LOOKUP_PATH"].Value;"C:ETL_DeploymentETL_LOGS" /SET Package.Variables["P_SCHOOL_CODE"].Value;"007"

This command generates an error telling that the Environment variable is not found and it throws this error:

Error : 2007-08-23 18:59:10.25
Code : 0x80019003
Sourse : The configuration environment variable was not found. The environment variable was: BI_ETL. This occurs when a package specifies an environment variable for a configuration setting but it cannot be found. Check the configurations collection in the package and verify that the specified environment variable is available and valid.
End Error

Error: 2007-08-23 18:59:10.25

Code: 0xC001401E

Source: ETL_MAIN_PACKAGE Connection manager "Package Path Execute"

Description: The file name "C:ETL_Deployment" /SET Package.Variables[P_LOOKUP_PATH].Value;C:ETL_DeploymentETL_LOGSDIM_PERIODIC.dtsx" specified in the connection was not valid.

End Error

I run the package on the same server with a command line directly in a DOS window:

C:>cmd.exe /c dtexec /file "C:ETL_DeploymentETL_MAIN_PACKAGE.dtsx" /CHECKPOINTING OFF /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /SET Package.Variables["P_PACKAGE_PATH"].Value;"
C:ETL_Deployment" /SET Package.Variables["P_LOOKUP_PATH"].Value;"C:ETL_Deplo
ymentETL_LOGS" /SET Package.Variables["P_SCHOOL_CODE"].Value;"007"

I don't have anymore the error saying that the Environment variable is not found, but I still have the same second error :

Error: 2007-08-23 18:59:10.25

Code: 0xC001401E

Source: ETL_MAIN_PACKAGE Connection manager "Package Path Execute"

Description: The file name "C:ETL_Deployment" /SET Package.Variables[P_LOOKUP_PATH].Value;C:ETL_DeploymentETL_LOGSDIM_PERIODIC.dtsx" specified in the connection was not valid.

End Error

I conclude that the environment variable is not read at all.

Does anybody have an idea on how to solve this problem ?

Many thanks.

Sami

Reporting Services :: Implementing SSRS In A New Environment

Nov 12, 2015

I've been charged with architecting a new SSRS solution for our environment. We're mainly a .NET shop which works with an Oracle Database Server. Our developers want to start using SSRS for report creation and I'm not sure what is the best approach when it comes to this. Normally most of our environments have 3 separate servers, each one is DEV, QA and Prod. With SSRS however, i know that you can create multiple folders each with its own datasource connection, so i wonder if it would be better to just have one server were the developers develop their reports and then move them into a 'production' folder. (Any particular downsides to this approach?)

Also, are there considerations to be taken say, to tune Production SSRS vs a development SSRS or is that not really an issue? Besides that any other resources or tips for implementing SSRS for the first time, we're not going to do much with the actual databases to start we're just going to connect to our main Oracle database.

Configuring SSRS In A SaaS-kind Of Environment

Feb 14, 2008

Hi,

We are developing a windows application (Distributed via ClickOnce) and hosting the
SqlServer 2005 at our company. Now, we need to add reporting services to our application
and I've stumbled upon some problems.

First off, each customer has their own database on the same SqlServer instance. What
I would want, and need guidance for, is the following..

1. I want each customer to be able to use the Report Builder to login and access a
model only targeted against their database (maybe using some sort of sql user account?).

2. I want each customer to be able to login to Report Manager and save/edit their
own reports targeted solely for their database.

3. If possible, is there a way to script this for easy creation when we acquire a new customer.

4. If this is not at all possible, what other solutions are there out there?

Kind Regards,
Robert

Installing SSRS 2005 In Web Server And Cluster Environment.

Dec 8, 2006

Hi,

I am installing SSRS 2005 with the following scenario:

- Report Server and Report Manager will be installed on web server

- The repository databases (ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB) will be hosted in SQL2005 cluster server.

Both servers are running Win2003 SP1, SQL/SSRS 2005 SP1

When I try to browse the ReportServer virtual directory from IIS on the web server, the system keep asking username and password. After 3 times trials and it failed eventhough the username and password is correct.

The error message is:

HTTP Error 401.1 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

I've been searching on the web and found couple of articles talking about this issue. I've tried some of them like: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887993 or even this one: http://groups.google.ca/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.reportingsvcs/browse_frm/thread/991c9178ceab8f58/8f1a447aa60ad837?lnk=st&q=reporting+services+the+server+is+not+responding&rnum=3&hl=en#8f1a447aa60ad837

But this doesn't work.

I've checked both event viewer both web server and SQL server, but I can't see any information that tell me what had happened.

I also look at BOL, but doesn't help much.

Is there anyone can help me or point me to the right direction? Is there any guide document that explains step-by-step how to install SSRS in my scenario or similiar?

Many Thanks,

Usman Tjiudri

Client Installation &&amp; Configuration Automation

Jul 16, 2007

Hello!

I am looking to automate the rollout of the SQL Native client to our workstations. What I would like to do is use our login script to initiate an unattended install on the workstation. I will create the unattended file using the one that comes with SQL Server 2005 as a guide. This seems pretty straightforward.

More importantly, the other task I want to tackle is adding server aliases to the workstations. I am thinking of creating an alias for each of our applications and pushing the changes out by merging a registry key(maybe WMI? I dont know...). This way, should we need to move application databases to a different instance, we can just push an updated list of aliases to the workstations. The actual storage location remains transparent to the applications and users, (ie no configuration changes).

Has anyone done this or have any ideas? Are there any pros/cons that I have not thought of?

Thanks for any input!

Reporting Services :: Where To Install SSRS SharePoint Mode In A Multi-server Environment

Aug 17, 2015

I am setting up sharepoint and sql server integration environment. I am considering the following topology: PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 and Reporting Services in SharePoint mode Two Server Deployment

[URL]

I am looking to follow the topology example by the letter, which involves installing PowerPivot for SharePoint (aka SSAS in SharePoint mode) in the same server as my SQL, and installing SSRS in SharePoint (SP) integrated mode in the same server as SharePoint.

I understand, however, that if I wanted to install SSRS in SP mode in the same server as SQL, I could but only if the server contains the SP Object Model.

My first question is, what would involve having the SP Object Model in the SQL Server?

Would only installing SP binaries be enough; or Do I need to do a minimal install of SP in the SQL server enough for it to joing the SP farm? And most importantly, what would be the licensing implications for SP in case I want proceed down this route and have SSRS in SharePoint mode installed in the same server as the SQL?

Installation Wizard &&amp; XML Configuration File Location

Jan 15, 2008

Hi,

I am using SQL Server configuration indirectly with the connection to it configured in an XML configuration file with the location of the XML file and the connections all being different between development and production. I deploy to the file system using the SSIS Deployment Manifest/Package Installation Wizard.

It seems that sometimes the path to the XML config file is updated in the deployed packages and sometimes it is not.

When the path is updated, all connection strings (as displayed in the Connection Managers section of the Execute Package Utility) are displaying the new values as well.

When it is not, it looks for the XML file in the development location and since it cannot find it all configurations still point to the development connections.

Does anyone know of any conditions when the location of the XML config does not get updated and when it doesn't?

Thanks,
Sven

In "the old days", we built "boxname_new" and installed SQL with "sqlname_new", took PROD users off-line, and quickly renamed original boxes/SQL and new boxes/SQL to original name, copied data and off we went with upgrade.

NOW, the "renaming" option for SQL tools is not supported, but with re-installation.

Has anyone developed game plan steps for accomplishing hardware upgrade, including SQL environment swap with MINIMAL downtime for PRODUCTION environment? Can you share?

Walk The Log

Sep 20, 1999

This may be a stupid question

I am going to setup "walk the log" replication as shown

1. Server A dumps its log every 10 min
2. Server B loads the log every 12 min

I know how this works and it is fine and dandy, but can anyone do any transactions on Server B? if so what does that do to trying to keep things in sync and rollback?

Thanks
Pat

SQL Server System Configuration Checker - Installation Error

Jan 3, 2007

hello,

I downloaded SQL Server 2005 from Microsoft's website and tried to install.

First I downloaded and installed filename "dotnetfx.exe" according to the install guide. Installed without any issues.

Then i tried to install filename: "SQLEXPR.exe"- the main SQL Server software- which I also downloaded from Microsoft. I get the error below and here is how i got it.

------------------
ERROR:
The SQL Server system configuration Checker cannot be executed due to WMI configuration on the machine YOUR-07NFK16HDF Error:2147749896(0x80041008)
--------------------

I clicked on the executable file SQLEXPR.exe, then,
after extracting the file,

after the end user license agreement...

the next screen says "installing prerequisites Microsoft SQL server 2005 setup support files, the required components were installed successfully"

then i hit "next", then I see the screen with message (below:

"system configuration check....SQL server setup is scannong your computers configuration".
During this process(system configuration check), this is when I get the error ERROR- above. The pop-up error screen has a help icon.

clicking on help gives me the info below and says i must send it across the internet

Link ID = 20476
Product Name = Microsoft SQL server
Product version = 9.00.2047.00
message source = setup.rll
messageID = 70342

the resulting information says that there is no such information about message source in the knowledge database.

-----
pls what is the problem. Is it with the downloaded file(I got it from Microsoft's SQL Server home page)...and pls what is the WMI configuration on my machine?

Im using a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop, WIn XP with SP2.

thanks
El_N

SSRS Configuration

Sep 5, 2007

I'm trying to set up the Report Manager Virtual Directory. But the little X just wont turn into a tick - even though I click New, then OK, then Apply.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I've managed to get SSRS running before but for the life of me I can't get it going! So annoying! Does anyone have a link to a simple Walkthrough or something for getting SSRS of the ground so that when you navigate to http://localhost/reportserver, you don't get "The Page can not be found".

How Can I Walk Down Two Tables?

Jan 13, 2008

I have to make some quick and dirty changes to some open source code I'm working with.  I need to be able to look in one table for all records that fit a filter like this:"Select ProductID, quantity, attributes From OrderItem WHERE Orderid = " & sOrderIdFor each row, I grab the ProductID and attributes.  Then I need to find the record in another table where the ProductID is the same, and the ListItem field  is a substring of attributes.  To help clarify, Attributes may be "<b>Color</b>: Black<br>".  ListItem would be "Black", a substring of Attributes.Once I find the record I'm looking for, I'll need to update a field in second table.I've been using Strongly Typed Datasets so far.  I don't know how to walk down two tables in .NET.  I'm also very weak on joins.  How do I accomplish this? Diane

How To Walk Through All The Columns Of Two Different Table

May 21, 2012

I am two table. They are backup of each other. I would like to find out what the columns of a row that need to be sync.

For example

Record with ID = 2345, Update Name (From, to) (IreneLee, Irene)
Record with ID = 2345, Update Birthday (From, to) (1975-04-24 , 1975-04-24 )
Record with ID = 4568, Update Name (From, to) (VictorChu, Victor)

I use this statement

with cte1 As
(
Select T1.ID As 'ID',
T1.Name As 'T1Name',
T2.Name As 'T2Name',
T1.Birthday As 'T1Birthday' ,
T2.Birthday As 'T2Birthday'
from T1 inner join T2 on T1.ID = T2.ID
)
Select * from cte1

(eventually I have to programatically generate the above statement)

Below is the result:

ID T1.Name T2.Name T1.Birthday T2.Birthday
--------------------------------------------------------------
1234 Richard Richard 1971-02-09 1971-02-09
2345 IreneLee Irene 1975-04-24 1975-04-24
3456 Danny Danny 1962-09-08 1962-09-08
4568 VictorChu Victor 1962-09-08 1962-09-08

And I use the below script

DECLARE @tableName varchar(max)
Set @tableName= 'T1'
Select column_name From
(
SELECT column_name

[Code] .....

I need to find out what is different between each similar column (e.g. T1.Name and T2.Name) for each row It looks like I need two loop.

This is what the logic I think I need.

For (row in Rows for JoinTable) {
For(column in Columns for ColumnTable) {
if ('T1'.column <> 'T2'.column) {
Insert ('T1.ID' , 'Update T2. ' + column name, 'T1'.column, 'T2'.column)
into #ChangesTable
} } }

As suggested on other threads, I have checked the reportingserviceswmi.dll and it is version 2005.90.1399.0 and the WMI service is running.

Reporting Services :: Why SSRS Is Looking For Using Machine Configuration File

Aug 6, 2014

I am using BIDS 2012.I am getting this error: Unable to load assembly U2.

Data.Client, Version=2.1.0.0, Culture=neutral , PublicKeyToken=9ab9148678f4f448, Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: The report server has encountered a configuration error.

[code]....

I am expecting
C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319configmachine.config

how can I force SSRS to use "C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319configmachine.config".
