today i have updated from W7 to W10 on my Lenovo Z580. Now I can not open settings and Windows10 apps like Calendar, Edge,... (and calculator as well - "Explorer.exe element not found"). Tried Emerging Issue 67758 fix but it didnt find any issue.

New Windows 10 Home Computer, set up using PCMover from Windows 7 Home Premium Computer. A few problems, of course, so far mainly applications that did not transfer properly, and those easily solved.
One problem however I don't understand, and, therefore, cannot fix. I've gone into the settings for default applications, some of which are constantly ignored. I know that they are ignored, as WinPatrol keeps notifying me of attempted changes. One such pop-up is on the screen right now, stating that a change for files with the extension .avi have been changed from the setting to use VLC media player to use Windows Media Player. I clicked on No, to reject the change, whereupon a new one, this time for .cab files popped up. I will reject it, and a series of such changes will appear and be rejected.
I have screwed up my default open folder with.. it all started by trying to set the default console to powershell, I have been messing around with registry settings but in the end I failed to set it up.. then I went and double clicked a folder to open it and discovered that the default double click option was "open with visual code", that is when I started to dig around in registry again.. and removed visual code from being the default but somehow ended up screwing even more my default open, I can now only open my folders by right clicking on them and open in a new window..
if I double click them I get the following error message "windows cannot access the specified device path or file you may not have appropriate permissions"
Is it possible to have the start menu open with all apps as default?
View 5 RepliesI just finished a fresh install after going through several BSOD (which have now been corrected). I'm trying to change the settings and I can't changed date/time nor can I access the settings( Start>Settings). When I try and change the settings or date/time I get "This app can't open. Your trial period for this app has expired. Visit the Windows Store. Visit the Windows Store to purchase the full app." When I try to open Windows Store, same thing happens. Date/time is now an app?
View 2 RepliesMy problem is that I set Media Player Classic for MP4, MPG, AVI, MKV and other formats and Windows Photo Viewer for JPG, PNG etc. The next day for some unknown reason I see these associated with Windows Video and Photo app instead! I right-slick on a MP4 files, select Open with->Choose Default app and set Windows Media Player Classic again for the millionth time. The next day I see the MP4 files associated with build-in Windows Video app!
I usually leave my computer running with the monitor switched off when in work (so I can access it via TeamViewer), rarely restart, if that matters. For other details see my specs.
Every time I reboot, the file associations for images (jpg/png), media (mp3/wav/mp4/mkv) revert back to the default Microsoft apps. I prefer to use VLC for videos, Winamp for audio and Irfanview for images, and it's getting really annoying having to set all my file associations every time I boot up. This never happened on Win7 or 8.

I want Windows Media PLayer to be my default app for all of these multimedia files but at least once a day a pop up informs me that there was a problem with one of my default apps and that it has been reset to default.
Is there anyway to disable Windows from taking this action?
I'm using Win 10 Home and all windows 10 apps like store, xbox app, photos etc everything forecloses.
Have already tried both the methods as mentioned by you a couple of times - but no luck.
Method 1 wsreset.exe returns the following error:
ms-windows-store:PurgeCaches.
Have also tried sfc /scannow error - finding corrupt files but can't repair...
Have also tried DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth error 0x800f0906.
I'm installing Windows 10 on new computer for my organization . I try to configure one with fresh install (package of apps like Libreoffice, VLC, etc. for users) and custom desktop describes in this tutorial:
Default User Profile - Customize in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums It works fine, in audit mode I install apps, drivers, custom desktop and configure default apps like google chrome for internet browser, adobe reader for pdf files etc. then I run the command line to enter oobe mode generalize. Everything is ok, I continue my install. Then I create new user local account. And when windows starts, I have my custom desktop but default apps are removed (Microsoft Edge replace Chrome, Pdf files are read with Edge, etc.) and Apps Windows like "Weather" or "Actualities" crash .
I have 2 accounts on my machine. On my primary account, the Xbox app would not launch - no error given, just click and nothing happens. So I logged into Windows with my second account and the Xbox app launches with no problem. However, the Groove app won't launch under the second account, whereas it will under my primary account. I have tried the Powershell command to remove and reinstall the app and that has been 100% unsuccessful.
It appears to do nothing more than remove it from the start menu as it still says "installed" if I search for it in the Store. If I reboot, then the Store will allow me to reinstall. The same issue persists in not launching and providing no errors.
I am completely baffled as to why some apps work under one account and not the other - both accounts are admins. Is there something else I can do? I had originally upgraded from Windows 7, but after getting all kinds of BSOD errors, I did a complete wipe and fresh install. I've had these default app not launching errors - or lack of errors as none are shown - since then.
I have seen lots of people saying their Store won't launch or the Start menu doesn't work, but I have had no issues with that...

It seems to dislike VLC and Irfanview and resets defaults to Microsoft apps.
I can't open any of these apps when this happened after attempting to fix an issue started with not being able to unpin/pin new apps to the start menu.
View 1 RepliesAfter latest update, Windows keeps reverting my apps to default. For example, my default music app/program is Winamp, and after a while I'll just find that it is Groove music again. It is not a huge problem, but you see how it can be irritating. Also, Windows 10 won't recognize some of my usb devices. Mp3 player, and an USB hub. They work in Linux though, so it is not a computer issue.
View 9 RepliesStore (windows app store) and various apps do not open from the start menu. Store will also not open from search box. It just flashes on the screen, but does not open. Apps- such as 3D builder, Alarms and Clocks, One Note, Sports just indicate this app cannot be opened and go to store. All remedies to fix store listed in forums for windows 8 and such have been tried but have no effect. App trouble shooter for windows 10 is unavailable, but did run it and it just gave message that it is not applicable to this issue. That is reset, get apps, restore, and such. Seems all that is left is to reset computer?
View 7 RepliesI'm having the same issue that has been reported by other member's here in the forum. When I try and open the windows store on my taskbar, it pops on the screen for one second then goes away. Also, when I open my start menu it shows ( ! ) marks on several of my app's, when I go into the settings area under application's..I'm shown that many of my app's are disabled. I've tried a 'fix' that was suggested by going into the registry, but that didn't correct the issue. I've already had to re-install windows 10 pro. at least once. Now when I go into the settings area under recovery, it now longer offers me the choice to go back to my previous o.s. ( Windows 8.1 Pro. ), it just show go back to a previous 'build' instead.
View 3 RepliesI have some issues with the metro apps in Win 10. They don't open, and have unusual names. This actually started a couple days ago when my taskbar and start menu wouldn't open. While browsing the web, I saw exact same issue get told to enter a powershell command and he replied saying it fixed it. The command in particular was:

Long story short, It did anything but fix it, and gave it messed up names. I can click and click, but nothing shows up, even for a split second. I've tried to open an app from the .exe inside System32.
Looks like another annoyance (don't get me wrong, i'm not a 10 hater ) : when i do "open with" and select a portable app, nothing happens :/ Also if in the portable app i tick options such as "show context menu", this won't take effect. All that worked fine on 7.
I dunno for 8.1 but i guess it's same as 10? Anyways, is there a workaround? Can't live without that! Another thing : the great"types.exe" app that we all use(d) on 7 doesn't work here, is there an alternative or not yet? Perhaps it's just not possible at all to have such....
I am having a problem with reinstalling the default apps of Windows 10. When I have uninstalled an app, and then try to reinstall the default package through: Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml}
I get a lot of error messages in red text, and all my default apps from that point on have names that start with @{ and a version number. None of them work any more. The error messages relate to versions, if I remember correctly. Something about my versions being newer than the ones in the package. The only way to fix my problems is with system restore so far. I did this once before, under the first Win 10 build, and it worked fine. I think this stopped working for me since the 1511 build.
The reason I am doing all of this, is because I am having regular problems with the default apps not working. Right now, for instance, my Photos app won't open. But I have had a lot more strange behaviour with my Win 10 upgrade. Unresponsive apps, or unresponsive start menu/taskbar items.
I want to be able to repair things myself, before I have to resort to completely reinstalling Windows 10 again, which I think will ultimately be unavoidable, seeing as how much problems I am having with Win 10.what is going wrong with my default apps installation?
Also, what would happen if I took control of the WindowsApps folder, and manually delete stuff there(if that's even possible)?
I just installed the Windows 10 Preview on my Surface Pro 3 and immediately updated it to the 10130 build. Anytime that I try to open up the Mail and Calendar apps, both will pop up for 1 second and then immediately crash.

View 4 RepliesMy HP Ultrabook was upgraded to Windows 10 in September. I am able to browse internet, send/receive email and use Microsoft Office programs. Computer is rarely used (2 or 3 times per month). Last weekend I noticed that the built-in calculator app would not open (calendar and others behaved similarly). Called both Microsoft and HP support. Both suggested that the installation (upgrade) had corrupted my user account. Several internet search results also indicated creating a new user profile (copying data files from old to new account) might resolve all issues. Created new account yesterday but nothing changed. HP suggested that I must wait for major update in December. It's difficult to believe that Microsoft hasn't resolved these problems between July and now.
View 2 RepliesI am having some trouble getting the default store apps to work. As for the store itself, it used to briefly show the splash then crash. Now it is just an unknown file type that doesn't do anything when clicked. I have tried some of the more common fixes, like the powershell re-register scripts, but none work, all returning errors of one kind or another. At this point, would it just be easier to "Reset this PC", or is there another fix I may not have tried?

View 8 RepliesYou know in it's counter part either Windows 10 or even Windows 8.1... You can select which Apps to use and it's a lack of experience, I have had some problems in WP8.1 because of I use certain Apps and they "read" PDFs however they can't and each time that I open a PDF, I must open it from the App because of if I use a file manager always I need to choose which App I want to use. I hope it's going to be solved! Or at least they could add a tick for remembering our options.
