Deleting Registry Keys With Embedded Nulls

Mar 5, 2016

I am having an issue with a registry key that has a bunch of null values placed in it. Pretty much this piece of malware software, added a bunch of null values to the registry key so it makes it impossible for me to view or delete this value. When double clicking on it I get an error saying "Environment cannot be opened".

Trying to right click on the key and changing permissions gives a similar error. There a bunch of tools out there like RegDelNull that's supposed to delete these type of keys but they seem to no longer work with Windows 10. Need deleting this pesky keys on Win 10?

Drivers/Hardware :: How To Change Registry Keys To Increase USB Power To 500mA

Aug 7, 2015

I ran into this problem while on Win7 & found a fix (YouTube - ‪Apple Keyboard Hack - Fully-powered USB ports on a PC!‬‏) . Unfortunately, the YouTube video has been removed. I use an Apple keyboard that has 2-USB ports, one on each side of the keyboard. The power limits for these USBs was 100mA on Win7 so using a mouse is OK. But, if I plug in a USB drive or better yet my Wacom Tablet I get an error stating the power is too low to support. I believe the ports need to be 500mA.

I don't recall exactly how the YouTube author changed the registry key value but he did & I used these 2 USBs without problems for 4 years. I'm having trouble finding the USB location using run / regedit. Below are two screen grabs I used in my post 4 years ago. Windows 10 looks a lot different. Anyway, the USB I need is port 3 hub 7. How to navigate the registry key to that location & edit from 100mA to 500mA.

Can't Log Into Account After Deleting Registry Files

Nov 19, 2015

I have been having problems with successfully updating Windows 10 for the past months where the updates failed to install. I followed some steps on deleting some registry keys under ProfileList, which according to the article were causing the problem. However, after deleting one named s-1-5-18 and rebooting, I am now not able to login to my account. I also don't have access to safe-mode for some reason. When I do the Shift-restart procedure, it takes the to the system configuration window with only one option, shutdown computer.

Alternatively, I also have Kali Linux installed (which is how I am writing this threat right now), allowing me to have full access to my Windows partition, the export file of my registry key I deleted, and I even have access to my recycle bin folder, where I can see the folder s-1-5-18 I deleted. However, I don't know the right directory of this folder to move it to or I don't know if I could just import the registry file I exported before all went to hell. So basically, I have full access to every file and folder within my Windows partition from my Linux partition, which leads me to believe that I should be able to fix the registry files from here.

Tones When Pressing Keys

Sep 1, 2015

Intermittently, when I press some keys on the keyboard, I would hear a triple-tone from Windows 10. Nothing would happen, but the three tones have progressively lower pitch, immediately followed by a four-tone signal, which have progressively higher pitch. This is the same signal that Windows makes when one unplugs an USB device and plugs it back in.

I cannot figure out which keys trigger this reaction. I know for a fact that arrow keys do it, but I think the enter key does it also, or even the space bar.

This only happens on my son's computer (desktop, home-built). There's no adverse effect on the performance of the computer, but it's a mystery why it happens and what the computer is actually doing.

Disabling The Media Keys?

Mar 8, 2016

I detest them. And on this particular cheapo keyboard, they're in a *particularly* annoying location for me. So what I want to do is to turn them OFF! Preferably permanently, altho in Win 10...this might be impossible. (A hint in DosBox suggested deleting certain junk keyboard devices...but Windows 10 put them back in when I rebooted. NO!! But Windows is the god of the computer, so YES.) Still, as long as I have SOME method to turn these buttons off, that would be a huge improvement.

This is a generic keyboard, using the default Windows 10 driver.

Drivers/Hardware :: Keys Take A While To Initialize

Jan 3, 2016

What I mean is that specifically, my T, Y, Shift, Tab keys take 15 to 20 minutes to register. Before then, I physically have to push down hard on the key to make it work. I tried with a different keyboard. Same problem. That narrows down my issue to a software or internal hardware issue. I am asking this now because my parents have to get work done on the computer and want to use the keyboard completely right after the computer starts up. Is there anything I can do to diagnose the problem?

PC Freezes Mouse Won't Move And Keys Not Registering

Sep 3, 2015

I'm suffering from PC freezes. It freezes when I'm in windows but not in post. When it freezes my mouse wont move and keys won't register.. so it's just really stuck. I've tried waiting for about an hour but it didn't woke up. It happens really random. While loading a game, watching pictures or idle.. the time interval is very random aswell, couple times a day or once every couple of days. All possible with this freeze.. My current solution is holding down the power button so it shuts down, and then rebooting it. I'm not OC-ed and the pc is about 4~5 years old.

Now I'm wondering if there is a list of things that one would do? I don't really mind doing a lot of extra checking, since I normally don't check my system. A full check would be nice actually. I have tried running mdsched.exe and it showed 0 problems. I'm currently checking my hdd from within windows. (Rmb the partition and select run check) I did not upgrade anything on my pc other then my gpu a couple of years back. But it used to run fine even after the upgrade. The os i'm running, comming from vista pro to 8.0 pro to 8.1 pro to 10 pro could be cause aswell I guess, even tough I did preform a nearly clean install for the win 10.

The reason I want a list of testing programs, tips and tricks is that I can't find a solid list. There must be a certain guideline for finding 90% of the common computer problems? Check hardware first then software?

Customization :: How To Change Function / Action Keys Default

Sep 18, 2015

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer has developed a little glitch where every time I turn it on it switches the function keys to default, instead of the special action keys. I've tried switching it in settings but it does nothing. I've tried switching it in the Bios menu. Also nothing. I hate having to press the [Fn] key every time I want to pause a song or change the volume or the screen brightness, but the system seems determined to force me to do so?

Drivers/Hardware :: Getting Special Keys On Apple Bluetooth Keyboard To Work?

Jul 30, 2015

I have Windows 10 (upgraded from Win 7.1) installed on an iMac on a Bootcamp partition. When I was running Windows 7.1, all the function keys (to control brightness, volume, music playing) worked perfectly. Now under Windows 10 none of them work. And yes, I did go into the setup and try turning on and off the check box for whether or not the keys performed as Function keys with and without holding the FN key. If I go into Bluetooth devices, the keyboard is shown properly as an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard.

Drivers/Hardware :: Specific Keyboard Keys Stopped Working After Installation

Aug 25, 2015

After installing windows 10 on my HP laptop PC, some keyboard keys have stopped working. The keys that don't work are: { 'escape' 'g' 'h' 'backspace' }. I am sure it is not a hardware problem because on occasion, all the keys that previously did not work, start working again. In fact, as I am typing this thread, my keys are working correctly. When they stop working, I try to uninstall or update the driver in device manager but that does not work. Keep in mind this started happening after installing Windows 10. I have not had this problem in Windows 8.1.

Why Do Files Keep Deleting

Mar 29, 2016

It seems that Microsoft feels that they need to force me to upgrade to WIN 10 even though I do not need it. My system consistently flashes the WIN 10 upgrade Now box, and again last night while doing updates it decided to update to WIN 10 on its own. Needless to say, all of my files are gone. My back-up copies are no where to be found. Thus I have decided that Microsoft is no better than any other proprietary system that wants you to do what they want not what you want. Even my carbonate files that I have downloaded over and over again have been deleted. Why can I just not say no and Microsoft leave me ALONE!!!

Why Folder Not Deleting

Oct 1, 2015

I purchased a new hard drive yesterday for the use of nothing but TV and movies. Hard drive works fine, no issues with that. However, a weird issue I'm having is when I moved over my TV and movies from my D: drive to my new drive, the TV folder became, for all intents and purposes, locked.

All my TV is on my new drive and I can view it fine, so that's not an issue. However, for whatever reason, I still have a TV folder on my D drive. As far as I can tell, it's completely empty, but it refuses to delete. I've tried standard deleting, as well as running the CMD prompt as administrator and trying a "del" command, to no avail.

If I attempt to open it, it opens a dialogue box with the title Location Not Available, and it reads "D:TV is not available, access is denied."

If I try to delete it normally, it says I need admin access, which I provide, and then it says access denied anyway.

If I view the security properties, it says I don't even have permission to read the properties of the file.
