When I try to upgrade my Dell XPS 15 running Win 8.1 to Win 10 I get a message "we couldn't update the system reserved partition", I only have an EFI system partition, not the 100MB DATA partition I've read about.
I've attached my disk management layout.
I know about increasing the partition size but i dont know where it is on my pre-built pc. I do have a 128mb partition but i cant increase the size on my third party manager

Win 8.1 was installed from retail DVD onto a virgin 500GB mechanical HDD. I upgraded shortly after to a Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD and cloned the mechanical drive over, tested, and then formatted the mechanical drive for data. I got some real strange (to me) drive partitions - 100MB 'Data' drive which is almost full (cannot access) and a 350MB 'System Reserve' drive. The mechanical drive is a separate letter and all seems to work swimmingly. I sort of assumed this was normal.
Upon installing WinX I get the above error...from what i've read, people are having challenges moving from Win7 due to the fact that this reserve drive is only 100MB and it needs to be 300-450...well, mine's 350mb so not sure what gives.
I can't upgrade to windows 10 and it displays the message as in the attached image.

Installed a Samsung SSD on my Asus CM6730-06 desktop running Win7. the Win7 OS was cloned from the Asus Pc to Samsung SSD. Windows 7 runs great off the SSD. Got a Windows 10 upgrade notice and received an automatic download of Win10 but when it tries to install I get the message "Windows 10 couldn't be installed". "We couldn't update the system reserved partition". I would like to upgrade to Win10 on this pc.
View 9 RepliesI have an SSD with WIN7 installed. It has no System Reserved Partition (SRP) and thus no boot files on that nonexistent partition.
I've read here that individuals with a SRP of only 100mb have had issues installing WIN 10 and that those issues were resolved by expanding the SRP from 100mb to 450mb.
Will WIN 10 install if I have no SRP? Will it merely alter the boot files on my C drive?

Although I have been notified that my upgrade is ready to install, every time I try this it fails with an error message code of '80070002'. I've followed MS instructions on how to fix but guess what - it still fails.
View 4 RepliesI created a dual boot system quite some time ago and all was well until.RTM partition was completely up-to-date. I had recently updated to Windows 10 Build 10251 on the Insider partition.I turned the machine off on Sunday January 31, left town, and returned Saturday February 6. All was well with the dual boot when I turned the system off before leaving. When I turned the system on last night, it booted directly into the Insider Partition. There seems to be no option to boot into the RTM partition.
View 9 RepliesI am having Dual Boot PC XP and Windows 10 on different hard disk. Windows 10 have been upgraded from Windows 7 but the System Reserved Partition on Windows 10 remained 100 MB ( 30 MB is free space ), wherein if we clean install the Windows 10 then System Reserved Partition is 350 MB. Now the problem, if I create a backup then the minimum 50 MB free space is required in System Reserved Partition otherwise backup fails. I tried command fsutil usn deletejournal which was advised by someone but it increase the free size from 20 MB to 30 MB only. I am hesitant to use partition manager software because once I have used this on another PC on a simple partition and though it has increased the size of the partition but data of my other partition was deleted.
View 9 RepliesI am trying to make space on an empty partition as a temp backup before I install a fresh copy of 8.1 to upgrade to 10.
I'm using Mini Tools Partition Wizard 9 Free Edition. What I have looking at the partitions are, a C partition (700 gigs capacity), then a System Reserved partition (350 mb's) then a F drive with 100 gigs of unallocated space. Here is an illustration.

I want to shrink my C drive by 100 gigs and then resize my 100 gig F partition so I will have 200 gigs of usable space for the backup - But I can't because somehow my System Reserved Partition is on the right side of the C partition between the C and the F. Normally this system reserved partition is on the left of the C partition.
I do not know how this partition got moved. I did have another partition set up after the C drive that I used to install the Win 10 preview on but I since have deleted that partition and edited the boot menu to reflect this in MsConfig. Perhaps Win 10 moved my System Reserved partition over?

I currently have one drive that contains a System Reserved partition (which includes the boot files). The status is System, Active, Primary Partition.I have another drive with the C: partition. The status is Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.I've been told that if I remove the disk (it's a bit flaky) with the System Reserved partition, I won't be able to boot up. If this is true, is it possible to transfer that partition to another drive? If so, does it have to be at the start of the drive? Alternatively, can I make the C: partition include System status?

The first system system went without a single hitch and it was running windows 7 Pro as well.. The download was complete so I was ready for the upgrade. I started the installation and the first thing I got the comment "We couldn't update The System Reserve Partition". I cannot find any documentation on this message.
View 3 RepliesI have googled this issue a lot and I see a lot of things that can be done but I some are not working. My partitions look different so its a little strange. When I try to upgrade to 10, I get the error message "We couldn't update the system partition". I had an older SSD that like 120GB. I filled it up so I put in a bigger one. My computer says it's 465GB. and almost half full. I ended up using Samsung disk magic or something like that which copied everything from the old SSD and put it on the new one. I think when it did this, it created some different partition.
I added an image of my partitions. Both C and D are SSD's. C being my operating system.
I am confused as to which partition windows 10 is trying to install itself on and what exactly is on the data partition. If I right click on the data partition, the only option I have is to shrink the volume.
So I recently formatted my Windows 8.1 system and installed Windows 10. But it seems that the setup decided to set my System parition to a separate HDD (G: ) and put the bootmgr and all the boot files there, instead of using the left-over 350MB System Reserved partition on my primary SSD that Windows 8.1 had used. So of course now if I removed that disk, I wouldn't be able to boot anymore.
So what'll be the best way to move all of the boot files and system partition setting back to my old 350MB System Reserved partition? Will I need to disconnect all the other drives and do a repair install of Windows 10? Or can I manually move the files and partition settings over? The old partition is still marked as Active, so maybe I can just move all the Boot related files from G: to the 350MB partition and it'll just work? Maybe mark G: as INACTIVE too
I'm using win 7 at the moment and I want to upgrade for DX12 but anytime I try to it just says "We couldnt't update the system reserved partition" My reserved partition is 100mb and I know you need something like 350mb or something like that but I cant figure out how to get there. I'd rather not to a clean install if that's at all possible.

Take note here that I cannot merge any of the disks, they all result in error or System lock. I can't make the 35MB system disk larger, but Easeus, Windows disk formatter and some other major ones I've tried just say No. But the problem is windows 10 doesn't give me the choice to overwrite the C or H which is quite large enough.
Take note that i just used the SAME flash drive to boot/install windows 10 to a friends lower spec Intel i3 laptop with 1/2 as much ram from Win 7 BASIC. Don't tell me It's not powerful enough..
I have a Vaio laptop and migrated my factory Windows 7 install to an SSD about a year ago, which apparently left me with no system reserved partition. I used these instructions to create a new system reserved partition, but I'm still getting the same 'Couldn't Update the System Reserved Partition' error when trying to start the Windows 10 upgrade. What else I can do to get the upgrade to work? I really don't want to do a fresh install of Win 7 (assuming that would even work). My diskmgmt screenshot is below.Also found this thread on reddit , but not sure if that really applies to my situation.
View 4 RepliesMy Dell venue pro 11 tablet comes with a 32gb inbuilt space with windows 8.1. Then I got the free windows 10 upgrade which went smoothly.
But now the problem is after the upgrade there was very little space left in my Cdrive. The recovery partition takes up 6.5gb of space. I thought of deleting it using a 3rd party software.
I need to free up that space, currently i have 11 gb free space, adding this would give me 17 gb.
I get the error message: "Windows 10 couldn't be installed - We couldn't update the system reserved partition".

I could not load a disk with OS software and received this error message. "Disk has MBR Partition Table. On EFI Systems, Windows Can Only Be Installed On GPT Disks".
How do I convert the "Partition Table" to GPT?
