Runtime Broker Taking Up 10% Of CPU Constantly

Aug 1, 2015

I've noticed this since installing RTM 10240. With previous Insider Builds this didn't happened. I've cleaned installed twice now and the problem persists. I notice also a "Windows Spotlight Background Taskhost" process relentlessly coming and going and taking resources together with Runtime Broker. Nothing seems to fix this and many other users are experimenting the same. This makes the computer hotter as the CPU gets no throttling rest.

Apps :: Runtime Broker Taking Lot Of CPU?

Aug 15, 2015

I still have problem with the runtime broker, which uses a lot of CPU and so on, even if nothing is running on the computer. Because of it, when I close the laptop, it can't turn of by itself and still uses a lot of CPU, which will cause a problem one day... I know the idea of the application or whatever it is called (runtime broker) and it is supposed to take just a one or maximum two-three percentages of CPU, but it is not like that with me.

I have tried this one: How to disable runtime broker on Windows 8 RTM - YouTube and as well to go in the registry and set some value from 3 to 4, I don't really remember the exact things, I just saw a topic in some forum about it and the people there said, that it works. BUT not really for me.. I will add a screenshot of my task manager to see, what do I mean:

Runtime Broker Consuming Laptop CPU

Aug 23, 2015

Runtime Broker starts-runs and consumes almost all CPU-time. Laptop fan keeps running until I stop the process. Tried different suggestions but it still keeps starting.

E.g. disabling time broker service.

Problem still occurs for some reason.

Can't Get IE To Stop Running In Background

Oct 30, 2015

Again today, when cleaning cookies and trying to find where the pop-ups came from I traced it to IE.. Well I do not use IE nor do I use Edge which is constantly running. I still love Firefox and Chrome.

I went to Microsoft and there is info on there saying to uninstall it. Did that and still. I am very agravated only because it was hacked somhow, I did manage to remove the culprit but I hate the fact that I do not do anything to get into trouble and IE seems to.

When Typing Stop Loosing Focus By Software Running In Background

Mar 7, 2016

I am plagued by software running in the background such as backup that pops up a window over what I am working on. If I am busy typing and fail to notice my typing is wasted! It is extremely irritating. It isn't a particular Win 10 issue I suppose but that is what I am using.

Is there a Windows setting I can configure or is this purely in the hands of the rogue software?

Hard Drive Often Running Constantly?

Aug 24, 2015

since installing windows 10, initially fine now recently my hard drive runs constantly even when idle, it slows everything down and is becoming a real pain especially going online! When it is doing this there seems no obvious reason, i.e. it is not downloading updates, running defrag or disc check.

How To Stop Search Box From Constantly Popping Up

Aug 2, 2015

I've just installed windows 10 on my laptop. Initially a box on the left hand side telling me about cortana kept popping up so I switched cortanat off. Now the box just keeps popping up constantly, asking me to start typing to search the web or for apps etc.

I'm not 100% sure yet but it seems to be connected to scrolling down but also seems to be popping up quite randomly. In the last half hour it has popped up at various intervals from as little as 10-20 seconds to as 'long' as 2-3 minutes. There is no 'close' box and I can't see how to get rid of this really annoying feature.

How To Stop Losing Connection To Internet Constantly

Feb 16, 2016

I just recently bought a new laptop with windows 10 pre installed on it. The issue I'm having is that my connection to internet keeps disappearing even though I'm still connected to my wifi. On my former laptop, I didn't have this issue (windows 7) so I'm quite convinced the problem isn't with my wifi or router.

I've searched on this topic but only finding people with same problem but difference is that they UPDATED TO windows 10 while I had it pre installed.

My drivers are updated to the latest versions and I'm not sure what's causing this problem but it's really getting annoying now.

Can Stop Multiple Programs Running

Dec 14, 2015

Have a windows problem I cannot get around. In windows 7 and 10 I am trying to prevent multiple copies of a program being opened from the desktop.

In XP, there was a Right Click Option. – Allow only one copy of the program to open. This is missing from newer Windows.

I have set up a neighbour’s windows 10, and wife regularly inadvertently runs email program multiple times. Is there any cure for this in windows 10?

Performance :: CPU Not Running At Full Speed Even At High Performance Power Mode

Jan 9, 2016

I've notice that on windows 10 and 8.1, task manager would show the my max cpu core speed is 2.3-2.4 ghz. However, my Core 2 Quad q8400 is rated at 2.66 ghz. I tried changing the power settings in windows and try lowering my cpu temperature, but my speed would never reach 2.66 ghz.

Performance :: CPU Usage Constantly At 100%

Dec 28, 2015

When I was running Windows 8.1, I had this same problem. Upgraded to Windows 10, issue persisted, until I reset the PC (August). After I reset, CPU usage was normal. A few weeks ago, though, CPU usage has jumped right back up to 100% (per Task Manager). I've tried running malware/virus scans, updated SSD firmware, looking for resource-hogging processes, and none of it has been conclusive.

Performance :: PC Constantly Wakes Up From Sleep

Aug 20, 2015

Post W10 Installation - my computer constantly wakes up from sleep. It just will not stay asleep no matter what, I thought it was my mouse so I went into my device manager and changed it so it didn't have the ability to wake up my computer. It stopped for a little while at least that's what it seemed, must have been coincidence because now its happening again. Which is weird because I went into power settings and turned "Wake Timers" off completely, it's now switched to disabled. Yet whenever I runcmd and type "powercfg -waketimers" as it reccomended here [URL] .... to find out which timers are on.

It says something about volume 2 on one of my hdd's, some stuff that doesn't make much sense to me. If you need me to paste the cmd info you're going to have to tell me how. Also when i type "powercfg -devicequery wake_armed" it lists "HID Keyboard Device" and "HID Keyboard Device (001)." Maybe the latter is what's waking my computer? I figured that was just another name for my keyboard or something, all I want is my computer to stay asleep and only my corsair keyboard to be able to wake it up.

Also everytime it wakes up I type "powercfg -lastwake" into the cmd and it doesn't give me any info. It says "wake history count -1" and the other 2 stats are 0, followed by no text or information. Also I forgot to mention but when it wakes up as of now, the display will actually stay off but the computers lights and everything are on. Whereas before when I thought it was the mouse waking it up, the whole computer would turn back on, display and all.

Performance :: Time Is Constantly Out Of Sync

Sep 26, 2015

My time is always out of sync, it makes it increasingly difficult to follow conversations on Skype, for instance. I try to manually update the time and it tells me fairly often that there's an error when trying to update. It doesn't matter if my PC is powered off or if I'm using it, the time is bound to get out of sync, so I doubt it has anything to do w/ the CMOS battery. Should I be using a different time server other than time.windows.com? I'm also using Webroot SecureAnywhere Anti-virus. Not sure if that's causing a conflict or not.

I'm on Windows 10 RTM... I'm not connected to a domain, just a regular Windows Home network...

Timer Keeps Running - Unable To Stop It Or To Close Current Program Or Web Page

Feb 25, 2016

Recently I have had a repeating issue with the (egg) timer running constantly. I have been unable to stop it or to close the current program or web page which appears to be involved. What is happening? I thought it might be due to RAM running too low but that does not seem to be the case --- I can keep a constant check on RAM and use utilities to free it up at will. So if not RAM, what is it and what can i do about it?

Performance :: Constantly Restart To Avoid Crashing?

Jan 14, 2016

Since I upgraded from Win 8 to 10, I find that I need to restart my laptop several times a day or else it begins to blank out and flicker and then crash altogether. I recently installed CCcleaner (the free version) to clean the cache and that seemed to work but the problem still comes back, plus all my saved passwords get deleted. I have an HP Envy dv7 with 8 GB of RAM. This PC runs pretty well most of the time but when it begins to slow down and flicker, etc., then the problem starts. I do notice that this happens most often after I have been on the web for a period of time.

Performance :: System And Compressed Memory Constantly At 35% CPU

Jan 4, 2016

I am having an issue with System and compressed memory constantly using at 35% CPU, resulting in the fans on my laptop running all the time and being very noisy.

I have read:

Solved Is this normal? System and compressed memory process ALWAYS at 20% cpu - Windows 10 Forums

Why is using so much CPU?? SB, th2, all updated and indexing done. : Surface

System and Compressed Memory Service High CPU Usage - Microsoft Community

and i have also tried adjusting the pagefile from system managed to Initial 2Gb and Maximum 8Gb, and disabling sleep.

But nothing i do seems to stop this usage, some people seem to report that it goes away after 30 minutes or so, or rebooting a few times seems to sort it out, but nothing seems to be working in my case!!!

I am running a genuine copy of windows 10 Pro...

Performance :: CPU Fan Running At Full Speed?

Aug 6, 2015

I recently installed Windows 10 on a desktop computer and everything went as smoothly as it could have, with no problems at all. So, motivated by how well everything went with that computer, I decided to upgrade Windows on a laptop as well. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L855, with an Intel Core i3-2370M processor.

The upgrade process on the laptop also completed successfully. Now both computers have Windows 10 and so far it has been running... fine.

The only unusual thing I've noticed with the laptop is that the CPU fan wants to run at full speed all the time, even though the computer is never used for any "processor-intensive" tasks. The normal activity on it is browsing the web, watching videos, playing music, writing text files and really nothing more than that.

I immediately found this odd and I have come to the conclusion that something in Windows 10 is responsible because:

a) This never happened in Windows 7, which was the previous operating system the computer had, and

b) This doesn't happen when I start the computer and go into a different operating system, namely Ubuntu.

Performance :: Applying Backup Without OS Running

Jan 15, 2016

addressing in order to not lose my data. To give a bit of background, my laptop has 2 internal hard drives, 1 is my main/primary drive which I used for day to day operation and the other was just a backup drive which has a system image of my system.

My main drive failed, and after many horrifying clicking, scratching and high pitch squeals coming from the drive, I can only assume it has failed mechanically and isn't some kind of virus. So now I'm currently left with only my internal backup drive with a system image on it.

I was hoping to use this backup drive as my new primary drive, however I want to keep the files on the backup drive. I checked with my Hirens Boot CD and saw that my backup drive contains everything my other hard drive had, including the operating system contained within the Windows backup folder.

Normally for this I would install windows on another hard drive and then restore my files with the system image. However my laptop doesn't have a system restore disc or a copy of windows, it instead came with partitions on the hard drive which requires erasing my backup and consequently losing all my data.

I finally ask the question, is it possible to use the files currently stored on the backup drive without having to resort to buying a new hard drive to copy the files across and then partitioning my backup drive?
